Excellent Intro to Playwriting and Creating a Life as a Playwright

I am in the fortunate position to state that I will be attending New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) next month to begin my Masters of Fine Arts in Writing for Stage & Screen. Buzz McLaughlin is not only the author of this book but also the director of that program, and after finishing this book today, I am thrilled to be an incoming student of this program.

Even if I were not about to enter into my MFA program, after reading this book I would feel confident and increasingly competent regarding my ability to create a life for myself as a playwright in the theater.

The first half of the book focuses on the craft of playwriting, and doing the actual work. This is a sticking point for me, and the one I am most concerned with as I turn my life towards that of being a playwright. There are some important aspects of style, form, and consistency that I read and re-read, taking margin notes, knowing that these are aspects of the field that I need to play close attention to. I believe in the Muse and artistic combustion, but I also believe in having the tools necessary to create the art of which you dream. Together, having both the tools/knowledge and the muse/inspiration can create magic.

Having recently (last month) self-produced my first full length comedy, I connected with so many aspects of this book, but rather than feeling repetitive or obvious for me, it was invigorating - and I truly wish I had read this book prior to embarking on my first full-length foray, from beginning to end (first draft to production). I would have altered some of my practices, and certainly implemented them better.

This book balances practical, pragmatic suggestions while also tapping into the emotional saliency and mystery of what we do. Interwoven throughout are fascinating, perfectly placed quotations by some of the best playwrights, most of them personally interviewed by the author. They are carefully chosen and utilized, and certainly inspiring. Rather than being an opportunity for the author to namedrop, these quotes heightened my understanding of the concept(s) at hand, and added to the humanity and human connection of the craft.

Although certain "rules", concepts and suggestions might be strongly asserted and encouraged, McLaughlin carefully treads that balance between best practices and artistic creation, completely aware and encouraging of exceptions to the rule and/or creative license to do what we please, how we please, to create the art that we please. But we are assured that it at least helps to be cognizant and competent in what would be considered the best practices in the field, or at the very least to know the rules before we break them.

I am very impressed with this book, and will be revisiting it repeatedly throughout my time developing this magnificent and fascinating craft. How exciting!

A must for would-be writers

I wish I would have read this book six years ago. McLaughlin's book follows the playwright's process from conception to completion -- offering practical exercises and also advice from leading contemporary playwrights. The true brilliance of this book, other than it's stunningly lucid practicality, is supporting quotes from working playwrights, who expound in keen detail on the playwrighting process. The title of this book is misleading. This book is just as pertinent to screenwriters and fiction writers. It offers practical advice for problems every writer encounters. In particular, the "Playwright's Process" presents helpful exercises on nursing an initial idea into a functional, three-dimensional story. Rather than impress reader's with his knowledge of theatre vocabulary, McLaughlin charts a clear course for readers by focusing on the elements of playwrighting most newcomers struggle with -- particularly structure (character development, plotting, etc.). What makes this book so pragmatic is that McLaughlin, an experienced teacher and playwright, asks relevant questions concerning the mechanics of playwrighting. The playwright's quotes aren't presented in a round table fashion, but rather in response to insightful questions. This book covers all angles. It address the nuts and bolts of story writing, and also touches on issues like writer's block, and more importantly, how to deal with it. I was depressed after reading this book because I felt I had wasted six years, aimlessly throwing ideas and characters onto the page. If you are an aspiring screenwriter and have read Syd Field's "Screenplay," place it on your reference shelf. The "Playwright's Process" should be your writing Bible.

The Playwright's Process

I started college to become a Drama Major, not knowing which part of the industry I would enjoy most but, I knew I would not enjoy being an actor
so after taking theatre appreciation I decided to try my hand at writing, and while my grammar may not be the best on earth if you've been reading this and grading me.
This book helped me understand the process of creating everything about my characters and how to fit them into the world I had created for them. Also what elements to work with first, and how to decide if what I had in my mind was even worth pursuing.

All, in all. this is a awesome book recommended to me by my teacher.

Disclaimers: I did not buy this book, I was given a copy by the publisher to review. I have bought a number of books by Harold Davis in the past and have liked them. I have a several other books on HDR and have attended a number of seminars on HDR. I mostly use HDRsoft's Photomatix Pro for my HDR photos. I have been lucky enough to attend several events run by Harold Davis and I have signed up for more.

The subtitle claims that this book is: "The Complete Guide to High Dynamic Range Photography" and it is certainly covers more different methods to obtain high dynamic range photos than any other book I have seen. No one book can cover everything in a field, but this book covers it better than any of the others I am aware of.

If you consider HDR as a method to avoid over and under-exposing different parts of the image, or to collapse the actual dynamic range of the image to something that can be printed or electronically viewed, then this book covers HDR from 1855(!!), through the Ansel Adams Zone System, dodging and burning prints, and into the modern digital images with RAW, TIFF and JPEG workflows. The main tools are covered with detailed screen shoots. Lesser methods are mentioned. Important is the discussion of which tool might be best under which circumstances. Also covered are problems and solutions before the shoot, during the shoot, and after. Extensions beyond simple HDR include HDR panoramas, multi-HDR processing, what to do with moving objects, etc. Harold also shows that HDR can do much more than create "grunge" photos. Non-grunge HDR examples in the book include flowers, glamour, and more.

Other examples in the book range from highways, machinery, trains, landscapes, canyons, waves, streets with people walking on them, full sun closeups of rocks in a crevice, male models, female models, buildings, furniture in old buildings, etc.

Strengths:
-- Very wide variety of different methods of gaining high dynamic range with film or digital
-- Not dogmatic (I have seen some experts claim certain methods were "Not HDR" even though they achieved the same goals)
-- B&W as well as color images covered
-- Suggestions for post processing after the HDR image has been generated (rare in other books)
-- Suggestions for what kinds of scenes would benefit from HDR
-- Suggestions for what generally wouldn't benefit (women's skin--but then he gives a counterexample)
-- Interesting unexpected uses (for flowers, cloth, models)

Weaknesses:
-- Does not cover all the methods in full detail (though suggestions are made for where to find the additional information, for example PhotoShop tutorials)

Conclusion: I think this is a very useful book for anyone interested in HDR. If you are a beginner it will give a broad overview, ideas on how to start, what types of photos to use HDR on, and what tools might be best for various kinds of starting images and final products. Recommended.

Clear, Thorough, Informative and Easy to Read - An HDR book that delights

I've spent the last weekend reading this new book by Harold Davis and I must say that he taught me a thing or two that I didn't know - and I was an early practictioner of high dynamic range imagery when it first broke on the scene years ago.

In fact, when I lead a photo tour these days - one of the first things that I'm asked is if there is a good book on HDR that I would recommend. Until recently, I didn't have one that I felt hit the mark. Now I do.

This book.

Why?

Because Mr. Davis does so many things "right" in this expertly written text. He explains how HDR works without a lot of technical mumbo jumbo. He talks about all the various ways images can be blended. He gives examples of before and after photos using the various HDR techniques. In fact, his chapter on getting the entire dynamic range and his twelve steps for shooting a full dynamic range are worth the price of the book alone. Too often photographers return home from a trip and are distressed that their images don't have the pop that they saw with their naked eyes. By using the advice in this fine book, they won't have that problem in the future.

He also has embedded several case studies. My favorite is a case study on page 106 that explains a step by step process for utilizing Lightroom to craft a piece of photography that becomes photo art. Each step fully explained and shown visually, and there's no better way to "see" what magic can occur when HDR is done in a similar fashion.

I was also pleased to see that he discusses things like the use of filters within an HDR workflow.

My guess is that this book will become a go to resource for photographers worldwide. If you are interested in exploring how HDR can expand your photographer's toolkit, then this is the book for you.

A Better Version Of Your Intended Vision.

Extending the range of light and dark areas in an image has been a challenge to photographers for ages. Any technique used to accomplish this is considered HDR (high dynamic range) photography. In this book Harold Davis shows us that this task can run the gamut from in camera filtration and manipulation to digital darkroom processing and sometimes both.

Mr. Davis takes us through the myriad of automated workflow software available today such as PhotoMatix, NIK HDR Efex Pro and Photoshop HDR Pro. He also guides us through the selection process as to which methods produce the intended results as well.
Helpful screen shots and entertaining stories of why and how the striking images were made abound.

The case studies: "Jesse" and "Forest Sonata" are particularly useful. These illustrate Multi-RAW processing using ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) and/or Lightroom then finishing in Photoshop. This workflow permits processing three tonal versions of the same image (light-mid-dark) to achieve a HDR image. Photographers will find this extremely valuable since they can either shoot with this workflow in mind or research their RAW files and locate single captures that would benefit from an extension of tonal range. This process facilitates producing a better version of your intended vision. These tutorials alone are worth the price of the book.

I have been a fan of Harold Davis art for many years. His compelling flower and landscape images immediately come to mind, however he is clearly accomplished in all facets of photography as so beautifully revealed here. Equaling his art, is his ability to convey to others, the achievement of those sometimes tedious processes which he successfully communicates in an engaging manner. Whether you are a neophyte or experienced HDR shooter, there is something of value in "Creating HDR Photos" for you. This is a definite 'must have' for your photographic library.

In extended engagements with examples from twentieth-century theater, film, and painting, he focuses on the theatrical theory of Antonin Artaud, a series of American films, and paintings by Anselm Kiefer. These examples all return to the story of Lot's wife as a way to think about modern predicaments of the spectator. On the one hand, the sometimes veiled figure of Lot's wife allows these artists to picture the desire to destroy the spectator; on the other, she stands as a sign of the potential danger to the spectator. These works, that is, enact critiques of the very desire that inspires them.The book closes with an extended meditation on September 11, criticizing the notion that we should have been destroyed by witnessing the events of that day.

About the Author

Born in 1491, St. Ignatius Loyola abandoned the Spanish court for a life in service to Christ. Priest, teacher, and writer, in 1540 he founded the Society of Jesus, along with St. Francis Xavier, the Blessed Peter Faber, and others, establishing Jesuit schools, churches, and communities. He died in 1556 and was canonized in 1622.

"History is the elongated shadow of great men,"

Ignatius Loyola not only was a great man, but a saint. His influence today is greater than during his life. The network of high schools and universities in the United States (and the rest of the world) speaks to his wisdom and greatness.

The Spanish are justly famous for their aphorisms and there a plenty good ones in this book. Including some I didn't know were first articulated by Igantius.

The engravings in the book are just great! A very nice touch indeed.

Outstanding text for new students of Greek

As a 37 year old physician, I decided to learn Ancient Greek on my own without any prior experience in classical languages or grammar. Having reviewed a few other texts, this is absolutely the most useful and easily accessible. That's not to say that it's easy, but everything is explained in a well-organized and complete manner. The drills and exercises are very well done and it was thrilling to be able to tackle such a difficult subject on my own. My only minor issue with this book is that there is no answer key for the exercises, so one has to puzzle them out for oneself--a good experience in itself--but there are periodic self-scoring tests with answers that do keep you on track. Overall a wonderful introduction to Greek for the novice.

Outstanding and currently without rival

I have taught ancient Greek to students from middle school age to graduate students for more than ten years. This book is the best available, hands down. It is not condescending. It contains no serious errors; such infelicities as there are in its Greek sentences are to be excused on the grounds of pedagogical expediency. Its grammatical and morphological sections are the very definition of clarity and succinctness.
It may be guilty of an occasional oversimplification or a venial sin of omission. It leaves certain declensional systems and conditional constructions to the appendix, for example, and it certainly should include the an account of the dual, at least for nouns, somewhere in the body of the text. But those shortcomings are easily outweighed by the advantages of this textbook. It's the only one I have found where a student can actually a) get through the morphology and grammar of the Attic dialect in a realistic amount of time (Athenaze, in contrast, takes FOREVER) and b) leave students actually ready to tackle, say, a Platonic dialogue or a Euripidean tragedy when they're done. (Athenaze takes a distant second on this count, too.)
Other shortcomings: not enough vocabulary to give students a real "working minimum". Relegation of some fairly important morphology and grammar to the appendix. Or, conversely, Other strengths: Doesn't overwhelm students trying to give them a "working minimum vocabulary", I take it because the contents of such a hypothetical working minimum vocabulary vary widely depending on the genre or author the student is going to tackle.

You can learn Ancient Greek

As an avid reader of the classics I wanted to learn Ancient Greek so that I could appreciate the works in the original language. I started out at my local library where I found very few books on the subject. The few that I did find were too advanced or were poorly written.
Hansen's text book is different. It starts out slowly with pronunciation and alphabet lessons. These are very valuble and were the elements that were most lacking in the other texts. The book builds to syntax and vocabulary. The great thing about the book is that they put easy reading and speaking drills early on. This makes you feel like you are learning and builds your confidence. The book also stresses thinking in Greek, since it makes the language easier to learn and since Greek is one of the most expressive languages.
This truly is an intensive course in the language and some devotion to study is required. However, it is fairly simple and fun to learn from the book. At the completion of the lessons, you will have a basic understanding of the Greek language and will be able to express ideas in the language. I am not very good at learning languages. If I can learn ancient greek so can you.
Other good features of this book are its Greek/English English/Greek translation dictionary for many usefuls words and phrases.
