The Rhetoric of Terror: Reflections on 9/11 and the War on Terror, by Marc Redfield

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, did symbolic as well as literal damage. A trace of this cultural shock echoes in the American idiom 9/11: a bare name-date conveying both a trauma (the unspeakable happened then) and a claim on our knowledge. In the first of the two interlinked essays making up The Rhetoric of Terror, Marc Redfield proposes the notion of virtual traumato describe the cultural wound that this name-date both deflects and relays. Virtual trauma describes the shock of an event at once terribly real and utterly mediated. In consequence, a tormented self-reflexivity has tended to characterize representations of 9/11 in texts, discussions, and films, such as World Trade Center and United 93.In the second half of the book, Redfield examines the historical and philosophical infrastructure of the notion of war on terror.Redfield argues that the declaration of war on terror is the exemplary postmodern sovereign speech act: it unleashes war as terror and terror as war, while remaining a crazed, even in a certain sense fictional performative utterance. Only a pseudosovereign-the executive officer of the world's superpower-could have declared this absolute, phantasmatic, yet terribly damaging war. Though politicized terror and absolute war have their roots in the French Revolution and the emergence of the modern nation-state, Redfield suggests that the idea of a war on terror relays the complex, spectral afterlife of sovereignty in an era of biopower, global capital, and telecommunication.A moving, wide-ranging, and rigorous meditation on the cultural tragedy of our era, The Rhetoric of Terror also unfolds as an act of mourning for Jacques Derrida. Derrida's groundbreaking philosophical analysis of iterability-iterability as the exposure to repetition with a difference elsewhere that makes all technics, signification, and psychic life possible-helps us understand why questions of mediation and aesthetics so rapidly become so fraught in our culture; why efforts to repress our essential political, psychic, and ontological vulnerability generate recursive spasms of violence; why ethical living-together involves uninsurable acts of hospitality. The Rhetoric of Terror closes with an affirmation of eirenic cosmopolitanism.

Review

A masterly elaboration of post-structuralist thought on the subject.-Robert Applebaum

Topics include the attacks as a mediated spectacle.

A stimulating tour de force, The Rhetoric of Terror provides a brilliant lexicon of central keywords of our recent political life. Redfield's analysis of '9/11,' 'Ground Zero,' 'the war on terror' and other powerful slogans traces the performative paradoxes that have enabled these phrases to do such terrible work.Martin Harries

America’s fear of ambiguity allowed ambiguity to reign over the ...
By Matthew Armstrong
America’s fear of ambiguity allowed ambiguity to reign over the USA in the costume of its opposite: simplicity. The Bush administration’s “war on terror” introduced a world in which a president could constantly claim he was a war-time president while at the same time argue that his adversaries were not soldiers, and, therefore, entitled, to human rights. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Marc Redfield’s masterpiece exposes the way our relationship to language and consciousness has been altered by the epoch of terror. Redfield is interested in the American media’s aversion to studying the theatrics—the aesthetics—of “the war on terror,” and what that fear tells us about ourselves and our cultural traditions. The Rhetoric of Terror is dense and compact, succinct and complex. In this book, Redfield accomplishes what so many critics of theory insist is lost in the current academy: a balance between the immediate and the mediated, the rigorous and the accessible. This is an important book.

The Cruelest of All Mothers: Marie de l'Incarnation, Motherhood, and Christian Tradition (Catholic Practice in North America (FUP)), by Ma

In 1631, Marie Guyart stepped over the threshold of the Ursuline convent in Tours, leaving behind her eleven-year-old son, Claude, against the wishes of her family and her own misgivings. Marie concluded, "God was dearer to me than all that. Leaving him therefore in His hands, I bid adieu to him joyfully." Claude organized a band of schoolboys to storm the convent, begging for his mother's return. Eight years later, Marie made her way to Quebec, where over the course of the next thirty-three years she opened the first school for Native American girls, translated catechisms into indigenous languages, and served some eighteen years as superior of the first Ursuline convent in the New World. She would also maintain, over this same period, an extensive and intimate correspondence with the son she had abandoned to serve God.The Cruelest of All Mothers is, fundamentally, an explanation of Marie de l'Incarnation's decision to abandon Claude for religious life. Complicating Marie's own explication of the abandonment as a sacrifice carried out in imitation of Christ and in submission to God's will, the book situates the event against the background of early modern French family life, the marginalization of motherhood in the Christian tradition, and seventeenth-century French Catholic spirituality. Deeply grounded in a set of rich primary sources, The Cruelest of All Mothers offers a rich and complex analysis of the abandonment.

Review

"Extraordinary: beautifully written, theoretically daring, and a model of scholarly dedication. The Cruelest of All Mothers takes readers on an incredible journey to understand the relationship between the French mystic, Marie de l'Incarnation and the son she abandons for God, Claude Martin. But more than that, Dunn reads the abandonment as a brilliant scholar of Christianity, and shows how Marie echoes a longstanding (but seldom acknowledged) tradition that tethers female sanctity to the renunciation of their children. She also boldly draws from a contemporary critical theory and from her own personal experience as a mother, and dares to think how we might re-think the place of motherhood today. Taken together, the book is rich with historical and theoretical insight, moving, and deeply compelling. It lingered with me for days, and is sure to enrich our own conversations about gender, religion, and the history of Christianity. A gem!" -- Brenna Moore, Fordham University

"The Cruelest of Mothers is a unique book, unlike anything I have read before. It defies disciplinary or methodological boundaries. On the contrary, like a Russian nesting doll, it contains layers within layers: being at once a deeply personal, confessional work, a historical analysis, a theological work, and a long and profound meditation upon subjectivity and scholarship."--Emma Anderson, University of Ottawa

"A daring project of an unexpected intimacy between two women separated by almost half a millennium. It interlaces Mary Dunn's own moving process of meaning-making of family hardships with a thoughtful historical interpretation of the most painful and intriguing moment of the life of St. Marie Guyart of the Incarnation (1599-1672): when she abandoned her only son to answer the call of her God. Informed by Pierre Bourdieu's understanding of the range of human action as much as by Julia Kristeva's hypothesis on maternal sacrifice, Mary Dunn reflects on Marie Guyart's agency as a mother, a widow and a mystic in a world where religious and devote women were deeply influenced by the French Catholic spirituality of self-surrender."--Dominique Deslandres, Université de Montréal

"A fascinating study of motherhood and the Christian tradition as exemplified by the life of a 17th-century Ursuline nun, Marie de l'Incarnation."--Catholic Herald

About the Author

Mary Dunn is an assistant professor of early modern Christianity at St. Louis University. Her first book, From Mother to Son: Selected Letters from Marie de l'Incarnation to Claude Martin, was published by Oxford University Press in 2014. She has also published articles in the Canadian Historical Review, Quebec Studies, and the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, among other journals.

Warriors into Workers: The Civil War and the Formation of the Urban-Industrial Society in a Northern City (The North's Civil War), by Russ

In this portrait of Dubuque, Iowa, Russell Johnson combines personal narratives with social, political, and economic analysis to shed new light on what the War meant for one city and for the rapidly growing north. Johnson examines the experiences of Dubuque's soldiers and their families to answer crucial questions: What impact did the Civil War have on the economic and social life of Dubuque? How did military service affect the social mobility of veterans? And how did army service, as a form of industrial organization, help create a modern workforce? Warriors into Workers makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the formation of American industrial society, and addresses key issues in labor history, military history, political culture, and gender.

"If we taught children to speak, they'd never learn" - William Hull

Thirty or forty years ago, I read this quote. It stuck with me because i believe we often learn best through imitation. In many of my books I have advised that mimicry is prerequisite to creativity. It's wonderfully effective to imitate, copy, or trace what others have done in order to develop one's own tools for drawing before attempting to produce something original.

The Draw 50 Way
By Amazon Customer
My almost 7 year old expressed an interest in drawing and I thought this book would be useful for her. I am afraid it is still a little too advanced for her and I did not find it very easy either. It looks like it would be very helpful for someone that already has an artistic base; it took me quite a bit of time to do one drawing. I still think it is a good book though.

Latvia in World War II (World War II: The Global, Human, and Ethical Dimension), by Valdis O. Lumans

Valdis Lumans provides an authoritative, balanced, and comprehensive account of one of the most complex, and conflicted, arenas of the Second World War. Struggling against both Germany and the Soviet Union, Latvia emerged as an independent nation state after theFirst World War. In 1940, the Soviets occupied neutral Latvia, deporting or executing more than 30,000 Latvians before the Nazis invaded in 1941 and installed a puppet regime. The Red Army expelled the Germans in 1944 and reincorporated Latvia as a Soviet Republic. By the end of the war, an estimated 180,000 Latvians fled to the West. The Soviets would deport at least another 100,000.Drawing on a wide range of sources-many brought together here for the first time-Lumans synthesizes political, military, social, economic, diplomatic, and cultural history. He moves carefully through traditional sources, many of them partisan, to scholarship emerging since the end of the Cold War, to confront such issues as political loyalties, military collaboration, resistance, capitulation, the Soviet occupation, anti-Semitism, and the Latvian role in the Holocaust.

Barbarians at the door
By Vilnis Neilands
As a histographic document Mr. Lumans' Latvia in World War II has no match that I am aware of. It is so involved and detailed that none would dare challenge it's details.

Yet the author's own introduction/forward opens the door to a sway found throughout that pulls the work towards the author's beliefs often in opposition to other portions of the text. The work seems to lack the homogeneity of a well blended distillation but rather presents itself as an aggregate of disparate and often contravening lumps.

Mr. Lumans' forward aptly describes the dilemma of offspring being raised thousands of miles from their homeland based on parental remembrances rather than reality. My upbringing and Mr. Lumans' are virtually identical. It is not just a matter of distance and lack of reference but also of time, since parental `good old days' are sentimental vignettes of the past. Some offspring succumb to such reveries while others rebel. The romanticized memories are often so euphoric that it is easy for a child living under such to reach beyond neutrality in an attempt to bring balance. This perhaps might be the case in two prominent subjects of Mr. Lumans' book which appear unduly so impacted and mar an otherwise masterful work.

In his interpretations of the Ulmans' years, I am unconvinced that his ubiquitous negativity should be as intense as presented. A reading of scholars from his own bibliography, specifically Dreifelds and Ecksteins, reveal a multi century abuse of Latvian serfdom and underlying ingrained disdain of the overlord class, the extent of which does not appear to be appreciated by this author. Eradicating the vestiges of former ruling overlords was a common theme in Europe. This does not change the Ulmanis' years, but explains to a large extent their popular acceptance. Additionally, to somehow tie the Ulmanis' years as a ramp for the communist annexation, as is attempted in this book, is an assault that simply is a reach too far. Ulmanis' actions might inadvertently have abetted but surely he cannot be blamed for greasing the skids.

In his treatment of the Holocaust issues, Mr. Lumans seems as well to display a desire to habitually hyperextend towards the worst. Even in proffering hard data he seems to want to repeatedly err on the side of excess, often adding his own caveats of exaggeration. If his data interpretation is in order, how much value can be attributed to numbers from unverifiable field missions, the results of which will determine the reporter's military status. Or for that matter, from documents stashed in archives of a nation that as policy rewrote history at full gallop and to it's pleasure. Verifiablity does not necessarily ensure correctness. Nor should such routinely be magnified towards the author's particular penchant. Mr. Lumans readily points out that others do not agree with his presented data, yet rather then striking forth in neutral balance, he colors his views based on his exaggerated beliefs. Realistically there is no way to reach back to the ultimate truth. Yet if there is a truth to be found, I suspect it is somewhere between Mr. Lumans in his second generation distillations and a Mr. Anders in his small but very enlightening first generation account of a Jew, as he describes himself, Living Amidst Latvians in the Holocaust.

The psyche of a people who have routinely come under the sword physically, ethnically, or religiously by barbarian invaders as Genghis Khan, the Teutonic knights, Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler, the Poles and even Sweden, cannot help but be tempered by their ingrained lessons in self survival. Thus when they come under butchery once again by familiar invaders for the continuing and express purpose of extermination or enslavement in WW 2, civility could not have been expected. Because Latvia's culture and history is so tainted by the multi-layered barbarism of it's past and latest waves of genocidal horrors, the actuality of what and why and culpability will remain eluding even to the most scholarly in our midst.

As a histographic tool this book is well written and useful. But as to a deeper understanding of the happenings and causes, it subtly marred by the author's attempt, perhaps, at absolution from the traumatized ethnology he seems to be trying too hard to outrun.

Being-in-Creation: Human Responsibility in an Endangered World (Groundworks (FUP))From Fordham University Press

What is the proper relationship between human beings and the more-than-human world? This philosophical question, which underlies vast environmental crises, forces us to investigate the tension between our extraordinary powers, which seem to set us apart from nature, even above it, and our thoroughgoing ordinariness, as revealed by the evolutionary history we share with all life.

The contributors to this volume ask us to consider whether the anxiety of unheimlichkeit, which in one form or another absorbed so much of twentieth-century philosophy, might reveal not our homelessness in the cosmos but a need for a fundamental belongingness and implacement in it.

A treasure!
By Adrienne Jensen
This came in the mail and was so big and heavy and beautiful, I worried that I had accidentally ordered a $50 book! I checked my account and saw how very little I paid (less than $5), and I am just in awe. The poems are beautiful. They capture the emotions of the Italian emigrants in a way no work of nonfiction can. The English translations are invaluable for a shoddy Italian speaker like myself. I like to go back and forth between both languages. I just can't believe how little I paid for what I'm holding. I would happily pay $50 or more for this collection. What a treasure!

Gilded Lili: Lili St. Cyr and the Striptease Mystique, by Kelly Dinardo

Burlesque. A uniquely American form of entertainment...and one of the most celebrated forms in burlesque was that of the inimitable Lili St. Cyr. Her body of work as a striptease artist–featuring her innovative on-stage bubble baths and reverse stripteases–was on a level with such dazzling performers as Gypsy Rose Lee, Blaze Starr, Tempest Storm, and Ann Corio. And wherever the glamorous Queen of Burlesque appeared, controversy followed. Gilded Lili is the first biography of this pioneering artist, sure to be a smash as burlesque enjoys its own resurgence. Her tempestuous love affairs and troubled life make Lili St. Cyr's story a microcosm of American sexuality in the twentieth century, mirroring social changes in sexual politics and the commercialization of sexuality. A compelling biography and an intriguing take on feminist history, Gilded Lili is golden indeed.

Starred Review. Contemporary "stripper chic" and the "neo-burlesque movement" have spurred new interest in Lili St. Cyr, one of America's best-known postwar striptease artists, and this swift, engaging biography from freelance writer DiNardo is sure to satisfy, offering not only a portrait of the pioneering sex symbol but also a carefully researched history of the burlesque industry from the mid-1800s to its 20th century heyday. Most enthralling, however, is the delicious dossier of St. Cyr's lovers; although her official husband-count is six, her love affairs-with both men and women-may number into the hundreds. Ironically, she battled loneliness all her days, sinking into despair and heroin addiction toward the end of her life. The story of the burlesque queen with the physique of a goddess makes for great reading, and gossip hounds will delight in rumors that "Gilded Lili" taught Marilyn Monroe many of her best-known sexpot affectations. (Even more intriguing, sources claim that St. Cyr had a clandestine love affair with the blonde bombshell.) DiNardo shows admirable skepticism while reporting the salacious morsels long associated with St. Cyr, sorting the stage siren's real life from the legend that grew around her. Despite the rigors of fame, Lili proves strikingly self-aware-"Years of adulation...spoiled me,'" she admitted-making her as tragic and sympathetic a figure as any of the famously troubled stars who followed.

(Oct.) -- Publishers Weekly, November 19, 2007

Recent women's-studies interest in striptease has resuscitated the stars of the form during its mid-twentieth-century heyday, from Bettie Page to Gypsy Rose Lee. One of the biggest star strippers, tall, thin Lili St. Cyr, didn't just dance out of her clothing. She created imaginative variations (e.g., the reverse strip) and settings (bubble baths, Cleopatra and Salome portrayals, etc.) and spiced them with elements of ballet. She realized early that the greatest differences between headliners and chorus dancers were salary and the fact that the stars were usually naked, the chorines usually not. After that, her career path was clear. Although she performed nude for at least part of most appearances, much of her act seems tame today. In the 1940s and 1950s, however, her routines were sufficiently risque to cause legal trouble, and an audience member once sued her for lewdness (one wonders what he thought he was buying a ticket to see). Apparently the first book about St. Cyr since her autobiography, Ma Vie De Stripteaseuse (1982), this is an excellent show-biz study.--Mike Tribby -- Booklist, October 15, 2007

The most popular burlesque star throughout the Forties and Fifties, Lili St. Cyr influenced Marilyn Monroe, performed with Dean Martin, and danced well into her 50s. Author Kelly DiNardo recounts the fascinating life of "the queen of striptease" in the well-researched and superbly written Gilded Lili: Lili St. Cyr and the Striptease Mystique. -- Austin Chronicle, November 15, 20007

job well done
By Kara Mae
I've been waiting for a book about Lili St. Cyr since reading her obituary in Life magazine 8 years ago. When I finally heard it was being written, I was cautiously optimistic. I've read many biographies, and they can be overly fond of their subjects, poorly researched, tabloid-esque, or just plain dry. My fears have been assuaged as Kelly DiNardo proves to be professional, with class. She's pulled out all the stops, and you don't have
to be a researcher yourself to pick up on the laborious amounts of work put into this book.
Fellow burlesque fans may tire of the history of the striptease being detailed once again, but it is necessary in hopes of the story reaching a wider audience. The life story of Lili St Cyr certainly deserves such widespread recognition, for the reasons previously mentioned: her rise to fame, clashes with the press, independence, squandered fortune, troubled personality and ultimately dissappointing final years.
Her story is not an entirely happy one. Her choices were not all admirable. So I guess at worst that places her in good company amongst sex-symbols of the century.
DiNardo has sandwiched Lili's life events and choices within the history of the burlesque and striptease industry, as well as the changing social mores that affected it. The book contains a great deal of historical context, perhaps in an attempt to speculate at the true inner motivations and feelings of Lili St. Cyr. For a woman who was not afraid to shock the press with a sordid opinion or two, her true "intimate secrets" will always remain elusive.
The elaborate research Kelly DiNardo has done is sure to remain the best summation of the story and person that was Lili St. Cyr.

Gilded Lily
By Kirby Harris
I discovered Lili St. Cyr in an old Cabaret magazine back in the 50s and was captivated by her beauty. She has remained a treasured part of my memory since that time and I wanted to know more about her. Gilded Lili has made her come alive again and now I feel that I have been able to see into her world and know who she really was. This book has made her much more real and interesting to me. Thank you, Kelly.

The God Who Deconstructs Himself: Sovereignty and Subjectivity Between Freud, Bataille, and Derrida (Perspectives in Continental Philosophy

No topic has caused more discussion in recent philosophy and political theory than sovereignty. From late Foucault to Agamben, and from Guantanamo Bay to the 'war on terror,' the issue of the extent and the nature of the sovereign has given theoretical debates their currency and urgency. New thinking on sovereignty has always imagined the styles of human selfhood that each regime involves. Each denomination of sovereignty requires a specific mode of subjectivity to explain its meaning and facilitate its operation. The aim of this book is to help outline Jacques Derrida's thinking on sovereignty - a theme which increasingly attracted Derrida towards the end of his career - in its relationship to subjectivity. It investigates the late work Rogues: Two Essays on Reason, as not only Derrida's fullest statement of his thinking on sovereignty, but also as the destination of his career-long interest in questions of politics and self-identity. The book argues that in Derrida's thinking of the relationship between sovereignty and subjectivity - and the related themes of unconditionality and ipseity - we can detect the outline of Bataille's adaptation of Freud. Freud completed his 'metapsychology,' by defining the 'economic' nature of subjectivity. In Bataille's hands, this economic theory became a key to the nature of inter-relationship in general, specifically the complex and shifting relationship between subjectivity and power. In playing with Bataille's legacy, Derrida connects not only with the irrepressibly outrageous thinking of philosophy's most self-consciously transgressive thinker, but with the early twentieth century scientific revolution through which 'energy' became ontology. As with so many of the forebears who influenced him, Derrida echoes and adapts Bataille's thinking while radically de-literalising it. The results are crucial for understanding Derrida's views on power, subjectivity and representation, as well as all of the other key themes in late Derrida: hospitality, justice, otherness and the gift.
