Historical, Practical, and Masterful

Constance Gallagher was a Master Weaver in the Weavers' Guild of Boston in the post-war years. Educated at Vassar and a bacteriologist, it appears that her greatest passion was the collecting, preservation, study, and re-creation of historic textiles.

Most of the linens discussed in this book came out of her personal collection before they were donated to the Smithsonian.

Dustjacket blubL this book "gives directions for reproducing many of the fine linens handwoven in the early 1800's. Chapters are also devoted to the functioning of the 19th century loom, the recognition of the various patterns used in the tablecloths, towels, and pillow cases of that time, the use of those same patterns today, and the proper care of linen. The second part of the book gives treadling directions and has detailed drawings of the designs, threading drafts, and tie-ups used to produce these 19th century patterns."

Love the book!

Very happy with the book. i already have this author's Knitted Wild Animals (see my review) and these farm animals are just as wonderful and very satisfying to complete. the animals are knitted with two needles rather than double pointed needles, but seaming isn't a problem and the rooster that i made came out beautifully. the instructions are easy to follow and very specific. i like that the author quite frequently gives you the number of stitches that should be on the needle as you knit along, so that you don't get too far and then realize you might have forgotten to add a stitch some where.

the photographs are close up and in detail and very helpful when determining the placement of wings, paws, eyes, etc. in the back of the book, the author also gives instructions on how to do the different techniques used in the book so that you don't have to go elsewhere to research a particular stitch if you are unfamiliar with it.

i did come across a slight problem while knitting the rooster and the duck. on the rooster, when shaping the tail, on row 6, it says to "cast off 21 sts at beg of next row"...it doesn't say to "continue to knit to the end". because the author is always so specific, for some reason, i didn't understand what to do next. The same thing happened on shaping the neck of the duck. On row 6...she leaves off "continue to knit to the end of the row". it's probably not an issue with most people, but for some reason, i didn't figure that out right away. Duh! (and I've been knitting for 40 years! Go figure!!)

other than that...i think the animals are adorable. the rooster is amazing...so much detail. i love him! The chicks that go with the hen are much cuter than the susan b. anderson chicks from "spud and chloe at the farm".

the animals take time to knit because of all the detail...but believe me, they are worth the extra effort! (Please also see my review of Spud and Chloe at the Farm if you are thinking of knitting farm animals)

Adorable!

I love to knit and have six grandchildren. I was looking for some patterns farm related and I saw this book and I was so happy! The patterns are so cute and easy directions to follow. There is something for everyone in this book. They make great gifts for children or adults that admire farm animals. You won't be disappointed in this pattern book.

What a collection!

Sarah Keen has done it again. Another collection of beautiful toys each with their own character. There are some favourites in this book, the cat, the cow, and the dog in particular. I love them all! The toys are easy to construct, even a beginner would have little difficulty with most of them. A must have!

FANTASTIC overviews of most of today's musicals

Filichia is certainly a maestro when it comes to knowledge of the musical theatre. His book is both a fun, educational read for anyone with a zest for Broadway and Beyond, but it also serves its true purpose: It can help you choose a musical better than any "how to" guide on the market. Although it is missing a few licensers (WHere's Guilbert and Sullivan) and it hasn't quite caught up to ALL the revivals, it's still an excellent guide to helping your community, school, pr professional theatre find the best possible show.

Do we really need another production of Fiddler on the Roof?

Peter Filichia,the former columnist for the now defunct Theater Weekly,knows musical theater. In his informally written,enthusiastic book,How to Put on a Musical,he offers sage advice for schools that have the ability,determination,and fortune to produce a musical but don't have the unlimited budget of the Schuberts. He casts a roving eye over the 100+ years of musical theater and divides up the riches into categories of the tried and true musicals (Carousel,Annie Get Your Gun), recent moneymakers (Annie,Godspell),musicals with a predominately male cast (The Boys of Syracuse),musicals that demand significant vocal talent (Candide),musicals tha require proficient dancers ( A Chorus Line),and so on.

Filichia also offers brief synopsises of the musicals,which is particularly helpful with the lesser-known shows. He also informs you of the necessary props,costumes,characters,famous songs from the shows (if any),and inventive publicity activities that can be done to promote the show (some are ingenous,while others are strange or dull).

Perhaps the most important thing that Filichia offers are the pros/cons of each musical-this is especially crucial for the schools that need to censor their dramatic presentations. If the storyline is suggestive or if the libretto contains foul language,you are duly notified. In less serious,yet just as important circumstances,Filichia points out unusual props (like an iron lung for City of Angels),difficult dialects (such as the local dialects for Oklahoma!),and if the musical is too familiar with audiences (such as Fiddler on the Roof).

America's grammer school,high school,and college drama departments need all the help they can get. With Filichia's understanding,chatty book,the directors of the aforesaid departments receive a helping hand. For curious,interested devotees of musical theater (such as myself),this is a book suitable for browsing and discovering unknown gems of the musical stage

A priceless resource for directors and producers of theater!

I got a job teaching high school drama despite having zero experience doing it. Worse, the only musicals I knew and had seen were "Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera." So, when the band and choir directors starting throwing ideas for shows at me I was at a total loss. How would I know, without reading, listening to, and/or seeing every show they mentioned if it was a good idea or not?
Then, I found this book. Now, when the choir director tells me she wants to do "Lil Abner" I can reply that it seems dated. Or, if she wants to do "Flower Drum Song," I can tell her that we don't have enough Asians in our pool of talent. I can counter to her that "Into The Woods" is recommended for high schoolers, despite her objections to the contrary. I can recommend that we perform "Little Shop of Horrors" because it is a periennial money-maker and kids love it!
The book is divided into sections like "Shows for a big budget" or "Musicals that rely heavily on costumes". There's "Musicals that feature choreography" and "Musicals with Little Choreography." It's helpful to find the shows grouped together like this.
Then, it breaks down the show, giving a synopsis, assests, liabilities (often the most important information!!!), cast needed, etc. If you're passingly familiar with a show, this is all you would need. If you don't know the show at all, this is enough to warrant further investigation or to rule it out entirely.
I love this book. I would be lost without it. The only bad thing about it is that it doesn't have every single last musical ever created in it! But, it must contain more than two or three hundred shows listed, so that should be enough to get you by. I highly recommend this book.

If you are a stand-up wanting to get a book to help you in the craft - this is not the book for you!

You would be much better off buying Ajaye's "Comic Insights" or Carter's "Comedy Bible" and watching a lot of comedy.

This book is more for comic theatre actors, and then it is not much chop. The end.

An informative and fun read!!!

As an acting teacher, I have suugested my students struggling with understanding comedy, buy this book. It's current, easy, fun, funny and will give you a step by step guide on how to be funny, how to understand funny and how to recognize funny. The exercises are very helpful. A must read if you have any interest in getting into comedy as a performer.

What an Amazing Book....

As an aspiring actor Paul's Book has opened my eyes to so many fun and interesting acting techniques I never knew about. I've been studying acting for years and this is the first of the many books I've read that has made learning comedy fun and simple yet at the same time has stretch my abilities which has forced me to explore many new avenues in my career. I recommend this book to all types of actors. Its always good to explore the various realms of acting, whether you be a comedic or dramatic actor.

Enlightening Collection of Historical Documents

In this book Fordham professor John Olin presents the english translation of certain sermons, council addresses, and other documents from bishops and lay people alike that show that a reformation of the Church was already well under way decades before the 95 theses. You can feel the pain of Christians sounding the alarm, pleading for conversion, and insisting that the reader "stand fast: and hold the traditions, which you have learned" and condemn the laxity that had crept into the clergy. This proved enlightening as I was only aware of one side of the story - that the reformation really began in Wittenburg in 1517. This compilation of documents, for me, gave the eery experience of reading the prophets of the Old Testament. Like those prophets, these did not revolt against the Church, but instead, insisted on reform from the inside out.

Great resource for Catholics and non-Catholics alike

Olin collects together several important documents pertaining to the sixteenth century Reformation of "the old Church" that became the Roman Catholic Church. Too often Catholics are not interested in the Reformation, seeing it as a time when the Church split. But as someone once pointed out to me, the questions that were raised during the sixteenth century in Europe were answered in a specific way by "the old Church" and helped to define what the Catholic Church would become. Olin's collection of works from the period, some of which are newly translated into English, clearly show that "the old Church" was aware of the need for reform and points out the steps taken by Christians to save the blessed Church which they loved and to which they remained faithful.

Jaspers, a life-long liberal, attempted in this book to discuss rationally a problem that had thus far evoked only heat and fury. Neither an evasive apology nor a wholesome condemnation, his book distinguished between types of guilt and degrees of responsibility. He listed four categories of guilt: criminal guilt (the commitment of overt acts), political guilt (the degree of political acquiescence in the Nazi regime), moral guilt (a matter of private judgment among one's friends), and metaphysical guilt (a universally shared responsibility of those who chose to remain alive rather than die in protest against Nazi atrocities). Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) took his degree in medicine but soon became interested in psychiatry. He is the author of a standard work of psychopathology, as well as special studies on Strindberg, Van Gogh and Nietsche. After World War I he became Professor of Philosophy at Heidelberg, where he achieved fame as a brilliant teacher and an early exponent of existentialism. He was among the first to acquaint German readers with the works of Kierkegaard. Jaspers had to resign from his post in 1935. About the Author

Karl Jasper (1883-1969) took his degree in medicine but soon became interested in psychiatry. He is the author of a standard work of psychopathology, as well as special studies on Strindberg, Van Gogh, and Nietzsche. After World War I he became Professor of Philosophy at Heidelberg, where he achieved fame as a brilliant teacher and an early exponent of existentialism. He Was among the first to acquaint German readers with the works of Kierkegaar. Jasper had to resign from his post in 1935. Karl Jaspers Returns to his Homeland

Most philosophy books deal with trying to find the axiom of uniting reality & thought. To Plato the axiom was the "Good" or "Ideal", to Descartes the "Thinking Self", to Kant the "Categories of Thought" etc...this book is completely different. Karl Jaspers started out with a psychiatry degree but after World War I became Professor of Philosophy at Heidelberg, but during the mid 1930's with the raise of Hitler & Nazi Germany, he had to leave his post due to his Jewish wife & anti-Nazi stand. After World war II, he returned to Heidelberg to give a series of lectures dealing with "The Question of German Guilt", this book being a written version of those lectures. Karl Jaspers writes very clean & precise while not using the difficult words like Kant's "Transcendental Manifold" or Heideger's "Dasein" etc...therefore sit back, get a cup of coffee & enjoy another very well written, easy to read philosophy book. Within these lectures Karl Jaspers tries to help his fellow German people to struggle through their current defeat & the Nuremberg trials by giving the reasons behind the raise of Nazi Germany, the dates when certain people either left or were trapped within the new social system, the defeat, & current responsibility of certain individuals or the German people as a whole. Karl Jaspers then lists 4 categories of guilt & degrees of responsibility: Criminal guilt (the commitment of certain acts & judgment by trial), Political guilt (how involved one is within one's government), moral guilt (your own private or circle of friends consciences), & metaphysical guilt (an universally shared responsibility to choose to live rather than protest evil). Each category is then explain in great detail of its pros & cons of legality, & which categories have more of a proof of guilt. I enjoyed the book, I hope you will too.

Collective Liability but No Collective Guilt, According to Jaspers

The following review is based on the original (1947) English-language edition. What Karl Jaspers means by guilt, in all of its types (see pp. 31-32), has already been discussed by another reviewer, and will not be repeated here.

Jaspers has, correctly or incorrectly, been considered an existentialist. In either case, his work includes a considerable emphasis on personal moral reflection.

Oddly enough, Jaspers has been accused of advocating collective German guilt. This is manifestly incorrect. He writes: "It is nonsensical, however, to charge a whole people with a crime. The criminal is always only an individual. It is nonsensical, too, to lay moral guilt to a people as a whole. There is no such thing as a national character extending to every single member of a nation...Morally one can judge the individual only, never a group...A people cannot perish heroically, cannot be a criminal, cannot act morally or immorally; only its individuals can do so. A people as a whole can be neither guilty nor innocent..." (pp. 40-41)

Going further, Jaspers comments: "Lastly, the phrase [You are the guilty] may mean: `You are inferior as a nation, ignoble, criminal, the scum of the earth, different from all other nations.' This is the collective type of thought and appraisal, classifying every individual under these generalizations. It is radically false and itself inhuman, whether done for good or evil ends." (p. 50)

Valid "collective guilt", according to Jaspers, is actually collective liability: "Every German is made to share in the blame for the crimes committed in the name of the Reich. We are collectively liable. The question is in what sense each of us must feel co-responsible." (p. 61) Notions of collective liability also originate from within: "We feel something like a co-responsibility for the acts of members of our family...because of our consanguinity we are inclined to feel concerned whenever something wrong is done by someone in the family...Thus the German--that is, the German speaking individual--feels concerned by everything growing from German roots." (p. 79)

A Must-read for Germanophiles

This book was written not long after the end of WW2, but is still considered a classic among the 100's of books on the German
psyche of the first half of the 20th c. I am a cultural historian, specializing, for nearly 50 yrs, in the art/culture of Nazi Germany.
There are so many 1000's of books on every aspect of that era in Germany (& probably 1000's more to be written) that of course
no-one can possibly read them all. But the really oustanding works on the subject deserve a read by anyone really devoted to
the subject, & I wanted to add Jaspers' contribution. It is not just well-written, but, considering the post-war publication date, a book
that endeavors to deal with German participation (physically or psychologically) in the "Third Reich" quite objectively--not an easy
task back then. Recommended.
