One of Two Great Songwriting Books!

Being a complete novice at songwriting and wanting to start NOW!, I bought this book at the same time as "Tunesmith" by Jimmy Webb. I batted 100%. Both are great! Jason Blume's book is a kickstart to jumping right into the process with specific directions and tips. Quick reading and a great reference for "do's and don't's". If you're curious about any aspect of songwriting, it all seems to be there from how to do it through how to sell it and spend the money. Also, the index is pretty thorough which is very important to me. Webb's book, on the other hand, also seems to cover it all but at more length and more depth. (I say "seems" because I haven't finished either book yet). I'm reading it at my leisure and supplementing the Blume reading... and working at my first song.

Become a pro or improve your craft

As a beginning songwriter, I found Jason's book to be a godsend for me. It's funny, clear and helpful reading. He gave a lot of hope and freedom for those who aren't musicians because he is the living proof of the diference between musicians and songwriters. Everything is OK: the order of the lessons, the examples, the stories and the exercises. You can read the entire book in few days because is so interesting, but you will comeback once and again, to learn more and more.

Having watched Jason's own professional journey since the mid-80s, I'm overjoyed at his success, and the fact that he shares all of the peaks and valleys of his career so honestly in this book! Jason doesn't sugarcoat anything about the music biz - but he keeps the joy and enthusiasm and LOVE for music intact as he tells what worked for him, what DIDN'T work - and why! You won't find a more honest and revealing look at what it takes to be a hit songwriter today.

In "New Yorkers in Love" --which doesn't have to be a frightening concept--she recalls such favorites as "Manhattan Serenade" and "She's Got a Great Big Army of Friends Since She Lives Near the Navy Yard." In "Crime and Punishment," she cites "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue," among others. Top of the heap! A-number one! Now where's the CD?

Nancy did a wonderful job on this! (Caution--some of my research is mentioned in this book.) I've personally listened to hundreds of obscure but very worthwhile NYC songs. My only quibble is this: where's the CD, so people (unlike us, who don't have constant access to the NYPL's Rodgers & Hammerstein Archive of Recorded Sound) can listen to some of these obscure classics? It's really too bad that Groce didn't consult for Ric Burns' documentary on NEW YORK (which has a weak CD that doesn't include even the George M. Cohan and Frank Sinatra standards). C'mon, Nancy, give us the music! "It's up to you..."

About the Author

ERNEST FRANCISCO FENOLLOSA (1853-1908) taught at the Imperial University of Tokyo. In 1890 he became Asian curator at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

EZRA POUND (1884-1972) was a leading Modernist poet and the driving force behind Imagism and Vorticism.

HAUN SAUSSY is Bird White Housum Professor of Comparative Literature at Yale University.His books include The Problem of a Chinese Aesthetic and Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China.

JONATHAN STALLING is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Oklahoma. He is a co-editor of The Chinese Written Character as aMedium for Poetry: A Critical Edition (Fordham).

LUCAS KLEIN is a graduate student in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University.

Presents Pound's own edited version of Fenollosa's essay including notes and plates

Influences on the foundation American poetics have long quoted Ernest Fenollosa's essay on the Chinese written language which was first published in 1919 by the legendary Ezra Pound. "The Chinese Written Character as a Medium for Poetry" newly re-edited by the team of Haun Saussy, Jonathan Stalling and Lucas Klein presents Pound's own edited version of Fenollosa's essay including notes and plates. This edition showcases two obscured but important views: Fenollosa's encounter with Tendai Buddhism and Buddhist ontology, and his concern with the dimension of sound in Chinese poetry. This technical style book, enhanced with the inclusion of photos, explanations, notes and discussion, includes the first full publication of Fenollosa's essay as he wrote it. A scholarly review of Fenollosa's essay as edited and originally presented is a especially recommended to the attention of scholars and poets. Blurry ideograms in Kindle version

Before downloading the kindle version, be sure to try a sample. I found the Chinese characters in the sample to be blurry and difficult to read. This problem needs to be addressed before the kindle version is worth buying.

Chinese characters: meanings or sounds?

Anyone who has studied CJK orthography (Chinese, Japanese, old Korean writing systems) will likely enjoy reading this book. Fenollosa and Pound didn't quite get things right, about a century ago, by overemphasizing the form of the Chinese characters and what meanings were embedded. Well, they look pretty silly (moreso Pound's bombastic commentary) in a lot of what they wrote, but it is understandable: it is hard to not ascribe *meanings* to the characters (if you come from an alphabetical background). However, many of the modern linguists like George Kennedy and more recently Marshall J. Unger have seemingly made it their duty to attack any discussion on the semantic functions of the characters. Though I agree with Kennedy and Unger on the primacy of their phonetic function, I believe they overreact, and it is nice to see contemporary scholars like Saussy et al. revisiting Fenollosa's musings for what they are: a contemplative, incomplete draft on the nature of CJK writing.

The trail forged by this analysis offers a defiant counterpoint to the modern political lexicon, but at the same time a contribution to our understanding of its categories.

The subject of this book is a new "Islam." This Islam began to take shape in 1988 around the Rushdie affair, the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the first Gulf War of 1991. At this discursive site are many metonyms for Islam: the veiled or "pious" Muslim woman, the militant, the minority Muslim injured by Western free speech. Each of these figures functions as a cipher enabling repeated encounters with the question "How do we free ourselves from freedom?" Again and again, freedom is imagined as Western, modern, imperial--a dark imposition of Enlightenment. The pious and injured Muslim who desires his or her own enslavement is imagined as freedom's other.

At Freedom's Limit is an intervention into current debates regarding religion, secularism, and Islam and provides a deep critique of the anthropology and sociology of Islam that have consolidated this formation. It shows that, even as this Islam gains increasing traction in cultural production from television shows to movies to novels, the most intricate contestations of Islam so construed are to be found in the work of Muslim writers and painters.

This book includes extended readings of jihadist proclamations; postcolonial law; responses to law from minorities in Muslim-majority societies; Islamophobic films; the novels of Leila Aboulela, Mohammed Hanif, and Nadeem Aslam; and the paintings of Komail Aijazuddin.

In this creative partnering between the old and the new, Martinet (The Art of Mingling) writes contemporary love stories using the settings and illustrations from DC's romance comics from the 1940s through the 1970s. In Martinet's world, a 1950s story called "Loving the Wrong Man," originally involving an affair with a married man, might be rewritten as "Loving a Gay Man," for example. Others include "My Heart Said Yes, but My Therapist Said No!" and "Too Dumb for Love!" The collection is uneven, as some of the retellings work contemporary social mores into their fabric better than others. Still, this is a book with plenty of appeal for older teens and adults. *Starred Review* Martinet gave a grown-up gander to the romance comic books she devoured when she was a kid. Their artwork still seemed serviceable enough, but their scripts--in which slim, stacked, dewy-eyed ingenues always lassoed the loves of their lives, despite the wiles of bad-girl rivals--struck her as, well, dorky. So she rewrote them. What was "Stolen Dreams" became "I Hate My Hair" (our heroine has a supershort cut). "Love a la Carte" became "The Job from Hell" (the teary working-girl lead, one of a row of typists, moans about her boss: "Typewriters instead of computers! Why doesn't she just shoot us?!"). "Heartbreak," in which the love interest is first seen with his whole head bandaged, became "What Are You Saying?!" ("Mmph, mmph, mmph . . . ," in case you were wondering). In those and seven other stories, Martinet reacts to facial expressions, clothing, objects (like the typewriters), and even unusual colors in the drawings, which date from 1955-71, and creates hilarious, hip scenarios that view romance with the jaundiced eyes of experience and plenty of with-it wit. Mock advice columns, such as "Dee Pressen, Love Counselor," continue the stories' zaniness. It's just highly unlikely that any other book this year will be funnier. Ray Olson

Took me back to the old days

This was a delightful book, especially, if like me, you grew up on Love Comics. I read those probably from around 1958 - 1962. And, like the author said, that's why I'm screwed up about relationships today! Anyway, this book just made me laugh out loud through the whole thing. I especially enjoyed the one where the girl was in secretarial school, but it's been switched to a writing school, and she falls for the teacher. I loved the line of the main female character, "Doesn't she know we're all going to die"? That's what these characters needed to hear 40 years ago! Give up the scholop and get real! LOL I also liked that the author summarized the original plot, to put it into perspective for us. Very, very much fun, and the comics are beautifully copied, especially the men's blue hair, with their floating heads above the women's beds!

Romance and Laughter

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. It actually made me laugh out loud. The author has taken those dopey old romance comics (beautiful color artwork, though) and completely transformed them with her hilarious new dialogue. So you have all this great old artwork from the era of "Leave It To Beaver" and "Gidget" beautifully mixed with dialogue that would be right at home on "Sex And The City." The effect is sort of like that Woody Allen movie "What's Up Tiger Lilly" or maybe "Mystery Science Fiction Theater" where she comments on the old stories and updates them at the same time. Pure genius! The romance columns are a riot too; my favorite columnist is Dee Pressen, who gives VERY pesimistic advice. Please turn this author loose on more romance comic book stories!!

Highly informative and entertaining

After a passing acquaintance with the author Kevin Phinney, I picked up his book, "Souled American". I thought the subject of how black music transformed white culture was intriguing, and was curious to see how Phinney made his argument.

While I began as a casual reader, I quickly became riveted by the scope and detail of the book. It's scholarly style, informative yet stimulating and accessible, managed to beckon the dormant music lover in me. To more fully understand the history of black music, I began to collecting songs from the many eras and genres Phinney chronicles, from gospel, ragtime, and jazz, to swing, blues, rock & roll, rap and hip-hop. I found that this combination made the book roar to life, and made the study of black music completely absorbing.

Phinney, a professional music critic and journalist, reports the history of black music in a concise style and provides impressive detail, yet manages to entertain with pertinent stories and fascinating interviews. Names, dates, and places are plentiful, but so are aspirations, emotions, and hard truths. Black artists, at times withstanding tremendous hardships, at times achieving awesome heights, are afforded great respect by the author. He waxes neither over-sentimental when relating sad stories, nor sycophantic when describing victories.

Phinney, deftly and bravely, dons many hats writing this book. In a country where relations between races is so often that dreaded third rail, he manages to ride that rail for the whole book. He includes distasteful, sometimes horrendous words and images when he must, never taking the easy way out. His reporting, truthful and sincere, tells of the theft of many black artists innovations and creations by a largely corporate, largely white, America. Phinney never dwells on disparities or justices, but illustrates these conditions with the book's most passionate, most fiery prose, and champions fair play.

Phinney also appears to take on roles as historian, sociologist, musicologist, tour-guide, and educator in "Souled American". While presenting an impressive overview of African-American music, of artists and their works, he provides context, tells of an ever-changing America through more than three turbulent centuries. Phinney is a master at setting a scene, introducing the players, and then telling an amazing, moving true story. Sharing center stage with the people is their music. The crafting and evolution of song is paramount in this book.

The songs are the heart of "Souled American", and the author introduces them by the hundreds. Crafted by experts with rare talent and passion, the profusion of black music in America is awe-inspiring, as is the breadth of Phinney's cross-sample. This is wherein the real magic of the book lies. Reading of the history of a musician, and the genesis of a particular song, makes listening to that song a powerful, extraordinary experience. I managed to collect several hundred songs while reading this incredible guide. Always with my ipod or laptop at hand (I heartily recommend Rhapsody`s comprehensive online music service), I would stop to listen to the most important songs. Many I'd nearly forgotten, many were old favorites, and many became new favorites. Some songs I didn't care for but I gave them a fair shot. This made the going slow, but oh so wonderful.

I picked up "Souled American" as a casual reader, with only passing interest in the subject of African-American music. I was delighted to find myself transformed into a student of black music, with a new understanding and a new passion for the art, in it's myriad forms. I now am beginning to understand how much influence black music has had on American culture, and how much influence it has had on my own life. I can further state that this book, this odyssey, has renewed my love for music. For that reason, above all others, I can say that Kevin Phinney's "Souled American", is a truly fine book. I give it my highest recommendation.

I have been listening to Kevin for years. Was sad when he went off to write this book. He was gone way too long but the book was worth the wait. Not only have I learned so much from listening to Kevin and Kevin every morning but now to read the book and all the work and research that went into it. It belongs with my C/D's so I can refer to it when those nagging questions arise. Great work of art and I loved the conversation with Bonnie R.

Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany as an intelligence officer during the Battle of the Bulge, and as a prisoner of war camp administrator. After the war, Korf stayed on as a U.S. government attorney in Berlin and Munich, working to hunt down war criminals, and lent his expertise in the effort to determine the authenticity of Joseph Goebbels's diaries. "I Must Be A Part Of This War" details happenings and occurrences rarely recognized in historical references for World War II on the American homefront, as well as a potentially epic tale of Korf's incredible significance in the great war against Nazism in America. Although the author is a history professor, "I Must Be..." is thoroughly enjoyable historical account that is fascinating, entertaining and educational. WWII and history buffs should not miss this book! Tightly researched but thoroughly readable by the layperson. A broad audience including anyone interested in American or German history, fascinating life stories and complex love stories will treasure this book.

A German Fights to Free Germany

This book is a wonderful history of a German-American who fought in WWII: Kurt Franz Korf, a young attorney from Dusseldorf, fled persecution in Germany in 1937 (his grandmother was Jewish), went to the US and eventually enlisted in the US Army. Because of his fluency in German he was recruited for Military Intelligence and was assigned to the 97th Infantry Division during the last months of the war. His job was to gather and analyze intelligence and to capture and interrogate German soldiers and spies. He later used his legal background to aid in the prosecution of German war criminals at Nuremburg.

Based on extensive interviews with Korf and on mountains of documents that Korf had collected over the years, plus meticulous research by the authors, this is a personal story embedded in a richly portrayed historical context. Kollander and O'Sullivan are interested in what it takes for a man to go to war against his own country, and what conflicts this creates, but Korf is clear on his moral choices and, as a highly-educated German (he had earned a doctorate in law before leaving Germany) he understood very well what he was doing.

The story is fascinating, well-written and informative, so that soon you are invested in Korf's thoughts and feelings, his motives and his drive to fight for German freedom and peace. He is, nonetheless, thoroughly American and proud to call the US his home. Altogether this is a surprising psychological profile wrapped in an account of one of history's fiercest struggles, and it serves as a superb source on the war and its aftermath.

My father served in the 97th CIC Detachment under Lt. Korf and so I was interested in this book from a personal point of view.

About the Author
LEE J. AMES began his career at Walt Disney Studios and taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and at Dowling College on Long Island, New York. He directed his own advertising agency and illustrated over 150 books, ranging from preschool picture books to postgraduate textbooks. A prolific author of more than 30 Draw 50 books, Lee Ames died at the age of 90 in June 2011.
