A Great Book for Arts Managers, Artists and Artist/Managers

Volz' How to Run a Theater should be required reading for anyone working in the field of arts management -- be they artists or managers or artist/managers -- and anyone training to work in this challenging field. Written in the "witty" style that the subtitle suggests, this text offers an extensive overview of the many challenges that theatre managers face today, and more importantly, sound advice on how to succeed in spite of them. Volz offers us in-depth insights into such real managerial dilemnas as: season planning, budgeting, and audience development and such life management issues as: goal setting, networking and surviving in the competitive field of arts management. Using knowledge gained through over three decades of work as a nationally-recognized arts consultant and university professor, Volz not only inspires his readers to make their artistic dreams into reality, but, like any good consultant, teaches them how to do so. Perhaps best of all, this advice is offered with an appropriate blend of humor and perspective, encouraging readers to pursue their artistic goals, and to enjoy the process of reaching them along the way.

Good book for some, not for me building a theater from scratch.

This book tells how to do a traditional board of directors type theater. I am making a more rudimentary theater and needed to know how to create a board that would protect my investment in a building, help me with guidance, some fund raising, some outreach, but not saddle me with its own philosophical pronouncements that might hurt ticket sales in favor of their whim.

I actually, skimmed through every page, searching for the practical knowledge I needed. This book has no nuts and bolts about theaters. It could be about many kinds of non-profit enterprises. Not a word about anything hands-on and maybe I was mistaken to expect that, except the title is "How to Run a Theater" so maybe I did have reason to think it would describe scheduling rehearsals alongside scheduling set building, or how to research building codes, how to build a stage from scratch, what to look for in a building, what certified professionals I would have to hire, or profit vs non-profit theatering.

And the mild humor and Dear Abby suggestions lightened it but got repetitive. I presume most people don't read the whole book but at least 4 times he tells me to be on time and be respectful of other people. Well, who can argue?

Simple, Clear, and Saves Time

Our staff continues to use this book. Jim Volz makes things simple and clear, and he saves us boatloads of time trying to figure out how to do things ourselves from scratch. HOW TO RUN A THEATER is also a great training tool for new staff. We are using various chapters as preparatory reading for our strategic planning meetings. I am proposing that our management classes use this text. I am so happy Jim wrote this book.

That starts with the very fact of the line of separation drawn between the human and the millions of other species that are reduced to a single the animal.Derrida finds that distinction, or versions of it, surfacing in thinkers as far apart as Descartes, Kant, Heidegger, Lacan, and Levinas, and he dedicates extended analyses tothe question in the work of each of them.The book's autobiographical theme intersects with its philosophical analysis through the figures of looking and nakedness, staged in terms of Derrida's experience when his cat follows him into the bathroom in the morning. In a classic deconstructive reversal, Derrida asks what this animal sees and thinks when it sees this naked man. Yet the experiences of nakedness and shame also lead all the way back into the mythologies of man's dominion over the beastsand trace a history of how man has systematically displaced onto the animal his own failings or btises. The Animal That Therefore I Am is at times a militant plea and indictment regarding, especially, the modern industrialized treatment of animals. However, Derrida cannot subscribe to a simplistic version of animal rights that fails to follow through, in all its implications, the questions and definitions of lifeto which he returned in much of his later work.

About the Author

The late JACQUES DERRIDA was the single most influential voice in European philosophy of the last quarter of the twentieth century. His The Animal That Therefore I Am, Sovereignties in Question, and Deconstruction in a Nutshell have been published by Fordham University Press.

MARIE-LOUIS MALLET has been a Program Director at the Collge International de Philosophie and was the organizer of three of the four Derrida Cerisy conferences. She is author of La Musique en respect and is the editor of the special edition of Les Cahiers de l'Herne on Derrida.

DAVID WILLS is Professor of French and English at the University at Albany, SUNY. His most recent book is Dorsality: Thinking Back Through Technology and Politics.

For the philosophical animal lover

This book is among my first experiences with Derrida, and it has forever changed the way I view animal cruelty and the animal- human relationship. Derrida is brilliant. It's easy to feel privileged with the companionship of his thoughts and deconstruction of the philosophies of Descartes, Heidegger, and Lacan among others. We have gone from the traditional image of philosopher with dog at his feet to philosopher stark naked and vulnerable before his cat. It is an illuminating read.

THE ROLE OF “HUPAKOUO” IN AUTO-BIOGRAPHY:
How are we to define the “self” as “subject” if we ignore “spiritual-seeing” and “spiritual-hearing”?
There is more to humanity than the cognitive and the construction of rational propositions. There is a more primitive dimension that also defines us. This dimension speaks to us in an unknown grammar, one that appears to the Hupakouo attribute of the “psyche” who possesses the right perspective or “stance”. Of course, this is the concern of phenomenology in the first place; and the concern of post-modern thought. It is time to re-acquaint ourselves with the “Animot-voice” of the animal-other.
In 10 days at a conference held at the Cerisy Cultural Center in Lasalle, France Derrida did just that. This is his treatise of “awakening”; his plea for a new “auto-biography”, one that will give the animal-monster, that currently exists in the world, a “new name”.

HOW DO WE WRITE THE NEW NAME?

Derrida proposes a triad with regard to his approach. We could call this his “triad-of-Hupakouo”; a new LOGOS. Its parts: 1. the “being-after” of the self as a state of latency with regard to this quest for auto-bio definition. This is the self of shame and impropriety, and under the gaze of the interrogating animal-other. 2. The “being-alongside” marks a transition of the self where self enters the role of “negation” and negating the “monstrous animal”; and positing instead the “theoretical animal-other”. But discernment is still missing here. The self needs dialogue to get past this “lack” with regard to auto-biography. 3. The “being-near” of the self recognizes the role that ”Hupakouo” plays at the level of “presentation” concerning the “other” and “listening” with regard to the transcendentally intuitive “psyche”. Self and animal can co-exist in dialectic.

This is the same Derrida of the “phenomenology-of-writing”; therefore, we should recognize that the “PRAXIS” of all this is the positing of a written “zoo-to-biographical sketch”. This is a sketch of relation between the “I” of the self and the history of the “animal-as-concept”. We will enlist the attestation, argument, and proof of our recalled “auto-bio memory” as the apologetic accompanying proclamation; to help empower this PRAXIS.

The “notion” of this praxis-positing is formed through a process Derrida calls: “Limitophy”; which is a deconstruction of the false-singularity of “animal” currently in existence, coupled with re-interpreting the limit-point of our situation in a way that is “non-linear”. And the “cultivation” of the results of dialogue at the conversation-threshold with other selves involved in the process of forming a new name for animal. Cultivation takes place under the critique of a posited 3rd party called “Universality”.

Give yourself the benefit of reading this manuscript slowly; it is rich in content and addresses Derrida’s fundamental position in a way that centers on ”listening”. We are never so well advanced that we cannot learn new ways to awaken our spiritual listening.

Not really--most of his themes are here, too--but it is a more passionate, more straightforward Derrida than many of his works--he really cares about animals and his anger at the history of Western philosophy for giving the foundations for this "genocide" against animals is palpable--one of my favorite books that I found my students loved, too--and they did not have a strong background in philosophy.

One of Two Great Songwriting Books!

Being a complete novice at songwriting and wanting to start NOW!, I bought this book at the same time as "Tunesmith" by Jimmy Webb. I batted 100%. Both are great! Jason Blume's book is a kickstart to jumping right into the process with specific directions and tips. Quick reading and a great reference for "do's and don't's". If you're curious about any aspect of songwriting, it all seems to be there from how to do it through how to sell it and spend the money. Also, the index is pretty thorough which is very important to me. Webb's book, on the other hand, also seems to cover it all but at more length and more depth. (I say "seems" because I haven't finished either book yet). I'm reading it at my leisure and supplementing the Blume reading... and working at my first song.

Become a pro or improve your craft

As a beginning songwriter, I found Jason's book to be a godsend for me. It's funny, clear and helpful reading. He gave a lot of hope and freedom for those who aren't musicians because he is the living proof of the diference between musicians and songwriters. Everything is OK: the order of the lessons, the examples, the stories and the exercises. You can read the entire book in few days because is so interesting, but you will comeback once and again, to learn more and more.

Having watched Jason's own professional journey since the mid-80s, I'm overjoyed at his success, and the fact that he shares all of the peaks and valleys of his career so honestly in this book! Jason doesn't sugarcoat anything about the music biz - but he keeps the joy and enthusiasm and LOVE for music intact as he tells what worked for him, what DIDN'T work - and why! You won't find a more honest and revealing look at what it takes to be a hit songwriter today.

Abner Small wrote one of the most honest, poignant, and moving memoirs to come out of the Civil War. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the Third Maine Infantry during the summer of 1861, experiencing battle for the first time at First Bull Run. As a recruiting officer, he helped to raise the Sixteenth Maine Infantry and served as its adjutant. The Sixteenth Maine gained fame for its heroic delaying action on July 1 at Gettysburg, where it lost 180 of its 200 men. It went on to serve in Grant's Overland Campaign in Virginia. Small was an articulate observer of all this. He wrote his memoirs with a keen sense of the irony of life during wartime, and with a gift for expression. His descriptions of the dead at Gettysburg, his characterizations of famous men such as Major General Oliver Otis Howard, and his reflections on the emotions of men under fire are outstanding. Small was captured in the battle of Globe Tavern on August 18, 1864. His account of prison life at Libby, Salisbury, and Danville is gripping. Small was exchanged just in time to lead his regiment in the final days of the war. His book reveals more of the inner soldier than almost any other account written by a Union veteran.

Gem of a Memoir

It's rare to find a truly memorable wartime memoir written by an "ordinary" soldier. Most are seriously flawed in one way or another. Perhaps memories are dulled by the passage of time, or subconciously altered by the author's exposure to media hype. All too often it's painfully obvious that most memoirists are not professional writers or even very good story tellers. Every now and then, however, a diamond will emerge from the rough ore that makes up the mass of the genre -- Eugene Sledge's "With The Old Breed" immediately springs to mind -- and we'll be treated to a memoir that combines poignancy, honesty and genuine narrative skill. Abner Small's "The Road to Richmond" is one of those uncommon gems, a wartime memoir that captures the full spectrum of emotions and experiences endured by a common soldier, never falling into the trap of glorification, or pretending to offer glib, easy answers.

Small was an ordinary citizen from a small town in Maine at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was one of the early volunteers, and he managed to survive the entire conflict, experiencing along the way nearly everything a volunteer soldier could experience -- day-to-day boredom in the long periods waiting for operations to commence, routine life in camp and on the march, combat as a skirmisher and in line of battle, and a POW. During his service, he kept a diary, even while in Confederate prisons. Many years after the war, he used his diary and his letters home as the basis for his memoir. The truly amazing thing is that Small, without the benefit of an extensive education, had a natural talent for writing. While he always remained active in GAR veteran's groups, he never became enamored of his service, or combat in general, even when time, society and the media of his day tended glorify and make heros of those who fought. He portrays himself as an ordinary soldier caught up in the whirlpools of events, neither heroic nor cowardly. His ambivalence toward war comes through clearly, yet he just as clearly feels he was part of something much larger and greater than himself. He doesn't pretend to have the answers to the larger questions dissected by historians. He didn't regret his service, but he also didn't buy the concept of "Heroic War". He had the rare ability to portray his ideas and memories in clear, concise, vivid prose. He had the knack of finding wonderful metaphors to convey his points. Even more surprising, his style of writing translates very well to a 21st century audience. Readers today won't find his writing stilted, wordy, or dated, as is so often the case with works from the Victorian era. His writing shows just how similar we still are to our 19th century forebears. It's an example of the kind of concise writing Strunk and White would approve of.

The one weakness in Small's memoir is when tries to convey the larger movements of the armies. When he talks of this regiment, or that brigade moving to the left or right, rather than simply what he or his immediate comrades saw, he tends toward the dull, flat and pedantic. This is in part because his intended audience -- other veterans -- were of course privy to how Civil War armies were organized and moved on the battlefield, whereas this type of esoterica is alien to later generations.

Critics far more knowledgeable than me rate this book very high, and I can see why. I would certainly place "Road to Richmond" among the top 5 best wartime memoirs by ordinary soldiers I have read. Very highly recommended for any Civil War enthusiast, or anyone interested in an honest, poignant look into the hard life of a soldier/sailor.

Classic Guide to Monastic Culture

Back in university in the late 1970's, I took a course at the University of Washington titled "The Bible in Early and Medieval Literature and Culture". This book was one of the main textbooks. Thirty years later, I still open Leclercq's work to gain greater insight into the development of monastic culture. Leclercq died in October 1993, but not before leaving us with a treasure trove of writings on monastic life, lectio divina, and other subjects. "Love of Learning" is not casual reading, but intended for the serious student of history, especially anyone fascinated by monastic life, and the development of various forms of monasticism. As a Benedictine monk, Leclercq's hero of course is St. Benedict to whom he devotes many pages of insight, especially the development of Benedictine spirituality over the centuries after Benedict. That is where he has been of great help for my studies in the spread of Benedictine spirituality, and the influence of Benedictine culture upon western Europe and contemporary life. It is not by accident that Benedict is consider the Patron Saint of Europe. Through the spread of Benedictine abbeys across the landscape of Europe, from Portugul to Poland, from Sweden to Sicily, Benedictine life touched the lives of millions of Europeans in those centuries often known as "the dark ages", with Benedictine monks bringing literacy, health, agriculture, orchards, vineyards, industry, artistry, preservation of ancient manuscripts including the Bible, calligraphy, liturgy, modesty, humility, and stability to villages, towns and cities across a continent. No small feat! More about learning

Learning is one of my passions. Over the years I have seen a number of references to Leclercq's book and then I read it. In the Middle Ages (Eleventh century and beyond) learning happened in two social contexts: monastery and school. Leclercq focuses on the monastery, where the monks learned in order to praise God and live devout lives. To pray they had be be able to read the scriptures and other texts - both Christian and classical. What they read and prayed about prompted them to write their own expositions. The more famous of these are ones by Bernard of Clairvaux, Anselm and a few others. In general, the monks had little interest in abstract or conceptual learning; they left this to those teaching at the schools. Overall, Leclercq clearly and thoughtfully describes the learning at the monasteries, which influence later Western thought. The Middle Ages were not as "dark" as we sometimes think they were.

A classic study

Dom Leclercq's study of Benedictine monastic spirituality remains a classic. In fact Pope Benedict XVI has quoted from it extensively in his various addresses on monasticism and European culture.

Originally written as a series of conferences for young monks, the book starts by exploring the two foundational documents of Benedictine spirituality - the Rule of St Benedict and the Life of the saint by St Gregory the Great. From there it traces the development of the monastic commitment to learning and prayer through the middle ages, with particular emphasis on St Bernard.

It is beautifully written, and full of spiritual gems.

A must read for any serious student of monasticism.

Butler's best book.

At the heart of Judith Butler’s complex and pathbreaking reflections on gender has always been a concern with simply making the world a better place. A place at once more hospitable and more challenging than it has been, less exclusionary and less indifferent than it is. A concern, in other words, with ethics. In Giving an Account of Oneself, Butler opens the question of the very possibility of ethics; what kind of subject could be an ethical subject? What are the sorts of conditions by which we can act ethically in the world? In what manner can one be held to be accountable, and to give an account of oneself?

Against conceptions of subjectivity which hold that only subjects in full control of their wills and destinies can be responsible - and hence ethical - Butler argues, following in the footsteps of Emmanuel Levinas and Jean Laplanche, that responsibility flows only from the implication of the self in an order that rather dispossess the self of mastery; that our entwinement with forces and powers not (entirely) of our own making is in fact the very condition of our being responsible.

Liberal ears will no doubt bleed at the very idea, but Butler’s arguments are both immaculately conceived and powerfully conveyed. Central to Butler’s project is the concern with the very ‘appropriability’ of ethics to living beings. How can we, as human beings, cultivate a living relation to the ethical ideals we hold so dear? What sorts of violence follows when we fail to attend to the social conditions which enable and constitute ethical relations in the first place? Following from her work on speech-act theory in her previous writings, Butler goes on to to elaborate the need to take into account just these relations, relations which exceed the ability of a self to give a full and comprehensive account of itself.

As the spiritual follow up to her excellent The Psychic Life of Power, Giving an Account of Oneself is perhaps Butler’s best book to date. For all it’s theoretical perspicacity and complexity, it is a deeply humane book, a book written by an author with a passionate concern for the human condition and it’s contemporary travails. While it’s not the last word on ethics - does outlining the possibility of ethics constitute an ethics proper? And where, given the importance of the theme of ‘life’ and ’the human' in the book, are the reflections on biopolitics? - that ethics is about more than just about words means that at the very least, Butler’s book holds out a hope that is needed now more than ever.

General guidelines from one of the best

Stan Lee is not trying to show you how to duplicate his characters. What he does is guide you through roughing out your drawing and then adding details based on personality, body type, costume, powers, expressions, and if this is a sidekick. It would be better titled "How to think before you draw".

The commentary is quite entertaining as he discusses the wide range of superheroes. For instance, those with a love interest are influenced to act slightly differently. The back stories of his superheroes give you some insights you probably did not pick up in the comics or movies.

Segments also detail robots, villains, animals, spaceships, hideaways, and cars to name a few.

Great, fun book to read....and you might even draw something!

I purchased this book for my girlfriend's 10-year old son who's very interested in drawing comics and creating all sorts of super heroes. It's pretty funny to look at the types of super heroes he comes up with because they all have a list of super powers as long as your arm and the first power is always "cannot die".

Anyway, he's a big fan of Stan Lee so when I saw this book, it was a no-brainer to buy it. There's not a whole lot of instruction on how to actually draw super heroes given how many pages this book has, but it does give a lot of history of the heroes described in the book and speaks a lot to the types of heroes that a good comic book should have. He absolutely loves this book.

It's really good book to sit down and read even if your first priority isn't to learn how to draw.

Pick up a copy, I think you'll enjoy it.
