Essential Reference for Every Producer
By William Lampe
I have known Peter Filichia for more than ten years. He is an encyclopedia of knowledge on musical theatre. There are few people who have as vast an understanding of the art form as he does. I picked up this book for my friend, who at the time was an Artistic Director of a regional theatre. He and I both found it to be a thorough, well-written reference that anyone interested in producing musicals should read from cover to cover.

Essential for Directors
By Elizabeth
I found this handbook to be exceptionally helpful when selecting the musicals I want to direct at my high school. It's pretty accurate about the pitfalls and plusses of each show and it offers some helpful solutions to common problems. It is, however, missing a few shows that hopefully a future edition will cover. Highly recommended.

Loyalty to Loyalty: Josiah Royce and the Genuine Moral Life (American Philosophy (FUP)), by Mathew A. Foust

As a virtue, loyalty has an ambiguous place in our thinking about moral judgments. We lauded the loyalty of firefighters who risked their lives to save others on 9/11 while condemning the loyalty of those who perpetrated the catastrophe. Responding to such uneasiness and confusion, Loyalty to Loyalty contributes to ongoing conversation about how we should respond to conflicts in loyalty in a pluralistic world.

The lone philosopher to base an ethical theory on the virtue of loyalty is Josiah Royce. Loyalty to Loyalty engages Royce's moral theory, revealing how loyalty, rather than being just one virtue among others, is central to living a genuinely moral and meaningful life. Mathew A. Foust shows how the theory of loyalty Royce advances can be brought to bear on issues such as the partiality/impartiality debate in ethical theory, the role of loyalty in liberatory struggle, and the ethics of whistleblowing and disaster response.

Loyalty in American Philosophy
By Robin Friedman
Many American philosophers have thought about the nature and importance of loyalty, especially the great American thinker Josiah Royce (1855 -- 1916). In 1908, Royce made loyalty tne centerpiece of his thought in a book titled "The Philosophy of Loyalty". He addressed the nature of loyalty further in other publications. Royce was part of the "golden age of American philosophy" togther with other turn of the century figures including William James, Charles Peirce, and John Dewey, but his idealistically-influenced thought has fallen out of favor. Thus, relatively few readers today know Royce. Yet, some contemporary philosophers find much of value in his work, particularly in his ethical thought and in his discussion of loyalty.

A young American philosopher, Mathew Foust, is probably the most recent writer to engage with Royce in his new study: "Loyalty to Loyalty: Josiah Royce and the Genuine Moral Life". (2012) Foust is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Lander University, South Carolina, and this is his first book. Foust writes that his approach is "to recognize loyalty as problematic while at the same time holding that life has sense and meaning only when it is characterized by loyalty." Foust offers an exposition of Royce's thought, with consideration of others who have discussed loyalty. His approach is, on the whole, highly sympathetic to this great American thinker.

Foust emphasizes that Royce's thought is best approached in the context of his life. Royce grew up during the Civil War. His work throughout was heavily influenced by the need to combat disunity and its perils. Furthermore, Royce spent his youth in the rough-and-tumble mining camps of California, and the apparent lawlessness of the camps and need for community also weighed heavily upon him. The early 20th Century, when Royce wrote, was also a time of great social ferment. Thus, Royce wrote, in an important passage that Foust quotes: "The problem of the training of our American people as a whole to a larger and richer social loyalty is the problem of educating the self-estranged spirit of our nation to know itself better." In critically important ways, Royce's philosophy of loyalty is a philosophy of community and of realizing what he described in a phrase Martin Luther King Jr. would adopt as the "beloved community."

No philosopher made stronger claims for the centrality of loyalty than did Royce. As Foust recognizes, this centrality is puzzling. Many people can be loyal to bad causes and devote their lives to them. In the face of this difficulty, Royce and Foust try to explain the importance of loyalty.

Foust begins by placing Royce's thoughts on loyalty in the context of current ethical thought influenced by Aristotle's theory of virtues. He proceeds to explain Royce's own rather ambiguous definitions of "loyalty". Royce offered a "preliminary" definition of "loyalty" as "the willing and practical and thoroughgoing devotion of a person to a cause." After a lengthy explanation of this definition and its consequences Royce offered the following "completed" definition, which indicates its metaphysical underpinnings: "Loyalty is the will to manifest, so far as is possible, the Eternal, that is, the conscious and superhuman unity of life, in the form of the acts of an individual Self." Together with the need of a person to develop his or own life plan and adhere to it, Royce used his "completed" definition of loyalty to enjoin the need of "loyalty to loyalty". Loyalty to individual causes are good only to the extent that they promote the overall wellbeing of community and humanity.

Foust develops Royce's thinking and explores the comments and criticism of others who have considered it. In the process, he explores some fascinating, little-known byways, including Annie Sears' 1915 book, "The Drama of the Spiritual Life: A Study of Religious Experience and Ideals" and Griffin Trotter's 1997 study, ""The Loyal Physician: Roycean Ethics and the Practice of Medicine." There is a great deal to be learned about Royce and his insights from his book.

Foust tries to explain parallels between Royce's concept of loyalty and various competing contemporary ethical systems, including consequentialism, deontology, and virtue theory. Foust discusses Royce's views about how people learn to be loyal, taking issue in the process with another good recent book on Royce by Dwayne Tunstall,Yes, But Not Quite: Encountering Josiah Royce's Ethico-Religious Insight (American Philosophy Series). Foust devotes two chapters to pivotal questions of loyalty and its relationship to the community and to public life. The discussion is nuanced and offers much to think about in reflecting on the fractured situation faced in the United States today. A final chapter offers brief thoughts on loyalty and applied ethics, including problems about the role of the whistleblower and loyalty in the face of disaster, both natural and manmade.

Throughout this study, the concept of loyalty becomes both too thin and too heavily freighted. It many not bear the burdens that Royce, and Foust, wish to place upon it. Foust quotes and discusses the objections that have been raised against Royce by other writers. In places, I thought he underestimated the force of the objections. But Foust shows that there is a great deal to be learned from Royce about the nature of living a purposeful life, about the need to understand that a valuable life is not lived solipsistically in isolation but requires community and common purpose to achieve meaning.

The Synagogues of New York's Lower East Side: A Retrospective and Contemporary View, by Gerard R. Wolfe

Includes 100 illustrations of magnificent and historic synagogues on New York's Lower East Side.
It has often been said that nowhere in the United States can one find a greater collection of magnificent and historic synagogues than on New York's Lower East Side. As the ultimate destination for millions of immigrant eastern European Jews during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became the new homeland and hoped-for goldene medinah (promised land) for immigrants fleeing persecution, poverty, and oppression, while struggling to live a new and productive life. Yet to many visitors and students today these synagogues are shrouded in mystery, as documentary information on them tends to be dispersed and difficult to find.

With The Synagogues of New York's Lower East Side, Gerard R. Wolfe fills that void, giving readers unparalleled access to the story of how the Jewish community took root on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Using archival photographs taken by Jo Renee Fine and contemporary shots taken by Norman Borden alongside his text, Wolfe focuses on the synagogues built or acquired by eastern European Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants during the great era of mass immigration, painting vivid portraits of the individual congregations and the new and vital culture that was emerging. For many, the Lower East Side became the portal to America and the stepping-stone to a new and better life. Today, the synagogues in which these immigrants worshiped remain as a poignant visual reminder of what had become the largest Jewish community in the world.

Originally published in 1978, The Synagogues of New York's Lower East Side became the authoritative study of the subject. Now completely revised and updated with new text, photographs, and maps, along with an invaluable glossary, Wolfe's book is an essential and accessible source for those who want to understand the varied and rich history of New York's Lower East Side and its Jewish population. Its readable and illuminating view into the diversity of synagogues--large and small, past and present--and their people makes this book ideal for teachers, students, museum educators, and general readers alike.

Synagogues then and now on the Jewish Lower East Side
By Joyce Mendelsohn
This is an important book and a valuable historic document -- meticulously researched and expertly written by Prof. Gerard Wolfe. He describes in intricate detail the religious heritage of the iconic immigrant neighborhood that formed the heart of the American Jewish experience. It is fascinating to read Prof. Wolfe's narrative tracing the history of Jewish houses of worship in NYC and focusing on 12 active synagogues, 24 "lost" or endangered synagogeues and a handful of other significant buildings in the neighborhood. The text is accompanied by fine contemporary photographs by Norman Borden and beautiful ones by Jo Renee Fine from the first edition of the book (1978). This is a book that you will be proud to own and to pass on to future generations. It is an excellent gift for Jewish holidays and other occasions.

History Comes Alive
By Lydia Glick
I've been a fan of Dr. Gerard Wolfe for many years, since the publication of the first edition of this book. I am thrilled with the format, the photos and the updated information. As a NYC resident and frequent visitor to the LES, I think Dr.Wolfe did a wonderful job capturing the changes to the the community, and the sacred sites which they support. I might have liked a little bit more input from the local community, but that's a quibble.

Extraordinary modern Photographs
By Susan Weinstein
As a former resident of the Lower East Side, I found this book illuminating. Over the years, I would walk the neighborhood, turn a corner and find unexpected gems of beauty.
Synagogues of New York's Lower East Side by Gerard R. Wolfe, explains who built these wonder places of worship and the fascinating communities they served. I have also mourned, as wrecking balls and construction meant the destruction of these places of spirituality. So it was a happy discovery to see Norman Borden's photos, documenting, which places were still around, and how they had been preserved. This book is a monument to the vitality of Jewish community and a visit to the architectural beauty that we city-dwellers can take for granted. How great to turn a corner and see them there!

The Normative Thought of Charles S. Peirce (American Philosophy (FUP))From Brand: Fordham University Press

This volume explores the three normative sciences that Peirce distinguished (aesthetics, ethics, and logic) and their relation to phenomenology and metaphysics. The essays approach this topic from a variety of angles, ranging from questions concerning the normativity of logic to an application of Peirce's semiotics to John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme."

A recurrent question throughout is whether a moral theory can be grounded in Peirce's work, despite his rather vehement denial that this can be done. Some essays ask whether a dichotomy exists between theoretical and practical ethics. Other essays show that Peirce's philosophy embraces meliorism, examine the role played by self-control, seek to ground communication theory in Peirce's speculative rhetoric, or examine the normative aspect of the notion of truth.

Charles Peirce's Normative Philosophy
By Robin Friedman
Charles Peirce (1839 -- 1914) never held a permanent chair in philosophy, but he is widely regarded as one of the great American thinkers. Together with William James, Josiah Royce, and John Dewey, Peirce was part of an extraordinary group of American philosophers and of the "golden age of American philosophy" at the turn of the 20th Century. Peirce is usually regarded as the founder of American pragmatism, although he took care to distance his "pragmaticism" from the pragmatism of his friend, William James. Peirce conceived of philosophy in a grand, systematic manner with heavy influences from scholastic realism and from Kant. His thought is highly idiosyncratic and difficult as it is scattered in innumerable disorganized papers, articles and lectures which scholars have been trying to sort through since his death.

For all his difficulty, Peirce remains highly influential. This new collection of essays, "The Normative Thought of Charles S. Peirce" (2012), edited by Cornelis de Wall and Krzysztof Piotr Skowronski demonstrates the continued and creative influence of Peirce on a wide range of philosophical issues. In a series of conferences devoted to American and European values, 28 scholars participated in a conference, "Charles S. Peirce's Normative Thought" held at the Institute of Philosophy of Opole University, Poland in June, 2007. There were 28 essays read at this conference, 11 of which were selected for inclusion in the book. The authors of these essays are from the United States, Finland, Germany, Poland, and Spain, showing the cosmopolitan character of interest in Peirce.

"Normative" thought is thought of what ought to be. Many of the essays in the book sort out and explain Peirce's understanding of "normative" thought from various classification schemes he developed over the years. Peirce spent most of his time developing pragmatism and what he called semiotics -- a theory of signs and signifiers rather than on "normative" thought. This also makes the subject matter of this volume challenging. He came to conclude that practical thought rested on "normative" thought. Broadly speaking human experience begins, for Peirce, with phenomenology or the every day. They are followed by the three "normative" studies. The first, aesthetics (esthetics), forms the basis for the second, ethics, which in turn forms the basis for the third, logic. This is an unusual and provocative view which has echoes in some contemporary philosophy. Peirce spent a great deal of time with logic, much less with esthetics and ethics. The theoretical, normative studies constitute the basis for science. Remember again, although hard-headed, rigorous, and deeply knowledgeable about science and mathematics, Peirce philosophized on a grand scale.

The 11 essays in the book discuss Peirce's thoughts on esthetics, ethics, and logic. They range widely in breadth and in accessibility. The opening two essays are about esthetics and both draw parallells between Peirce's thought and the improvisatory quality of American jazz. Vincent Colapietro's essay, "Trsditions of Innovation and Improvisation" analogizes Peirce's thought to the "Imaginative, playful, reverential, innovative, and of course fallible spirit" that he finds exemplified in jazz. Kelly Parker's essay "Normative Judgment in Jazz" uses John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" as the starting point to explain Peirce's esthetics. Although both essays are interesting, they cast more light on jazz, for me,than they do on Peirce.

The next five essays constitute the heart of the book as they examine Peirce's thoughts about ethics. These thoughts are scattered among various writings and are difficult to synthesize. Some themes emerge from this group of essays. First is Peirce's committment to an ethical realism -- in the broad sense of a rejection of subjectivism. Second is the communal, shared character of ethics as opposed to individualism. Third is the differerence between theoretical ethics and practical morality which different writers in this volume interpret in various ways. The sense that emerges is that Peirce counselled against free innovations in morality and advocated instead behavior in accordance with received wisdom -- while allowing for the broadest range of theoretical discussion in ethics. With qualifications, Peirce offers a basically conservative approach to moral issues. Each of these five essays are worth reading for their discussions of Peirce and their thoughts on ethics. Of the five essays, James Liszka's "Charles Peirce on Ethics" and Cornelis de Wall's "Who's Afraid of Charles Sanders Peirce? Knocking some Critical Common Sense into Moral Philosophy" are both the most comprehensive and the most accessible.

The final four essays discuss Peirce on logic. As might be expected, these essays are difficult. They are also the closest to Peirce's own philosophical preoccupations. Ahti- Veikko Pietarinen's essay "Why is the Normativity of Logic based on Rules" is a hard but rewarding study of Peirce's views on the relationship between ethics and logic. An essay by a young philosopher, Mateusz Oleksky, "Unassailable Belief and Ideal-Limit Opinion: Is Agreement Important for Truth?" discusses issues central to Peirce's thought about the nature of consensus and truth. Oleksky tragically died shortly after the conference. The remaining two essays in this part discuss Peirce and communications theory and Peirce and current philosophical studies of what is known as modal logic and questions about possible worlds. While it is fascinating, this essay will primarily interest specialists.

This is a difficult, worthwhile volume that explores Peirce's contributions to seminal, lively philosophical issues in ways, especially where ethics is concerned, that are somewhat apart for the mainstream of philosophy in the United States. The book requires sustained attention together with a substantial philosophical background. It will appeal to advanced students and to readers with a serious interest in Peirce, American pragmatism, and in traditional philosophical questions as well.

Insurgent Testimonies: Witnessing Colonial Trauma in Modern and Anglophone Literature, by Nicole M. Rizzuto

During the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, insurgencies erupted in imperial states and colonies around the world, including Britain's. As Nicole Rizzuto shows, the writings of Ukrainian-born Joseph Conrad, Anglo-Irish Rebecca West, Jamaicans H. G. de Lisser and V. S. Reid, and Kenyan Ng gi wa Thiong'o testify to contested events in colonial modernity in ways that question premises underlying approaches in trauma and memory studies and invite us to reassess divisions and classifications in literary studies that generate such categories as modernist, colonial, postcolonial, national, and world literatures.

Departing from tenets of modernist studies and from methods in the field of trauma and memory studies, Rizzuto contends that acute as well as chronic disruptions to imperial and national power and the legal and extra-legal responses they inspired shape the formal practices of literatures from the modernist, colonial, and postcolonial periods.

Review

"Insurgent Testimonies is a tremendously engaging, exciting, and innovative book. It is a timely intervention into postcolonial, trauma, and modernist literary studies that brings them together in unprecedented ways, while never glossing over the disciplinary and epistemological tensions between them. Rizzuto's dazzling readings of Conrad, West, de Lisser, Reid, and Ngugi are exemplary."-Ben Baer, Princeton University

"A brilliant, committed reading of literary form as testimonial force produced by the historical damage of colonial violence and by the utopian horizons of anti-imperial insurgency. Rizzuto rescues the unstable mode of confessional writing from its associations with romantic self-expression and contemporary therapy culture, and even from the desire for moral clarity that we associate with commissions of truth, reconciliation, and reparation. Methodologically agile and interpretively nuanced, this book gives us a new geopolitics of intimate literary forms, redraws the map of twentieth-century periodization, and vindicates close reading as a vital tool for humanities research today."--Jed Esty, University of Pennsylvania

"Insurgent Testimonies wrenches Modernism out of its fixed description as an offshoot of the "World" wars in their European definition. It wrenches postcolonial theory from its current focus on migration and deterritorialization. It redoes our thinking on testimony. Stunning readings of non-canonical texts by canonical authors, and significant texts away from the mainstream. Attention to historical detail combined with creative command of theory. An indispensable book."--Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak , Columbia University

Recent discussions in the various circles of feminism, postmodernism, and environmentalism have begun to make clear that ontology and epistemology without ethics is deadly - oppressive to women, oppressive to men, oppressive to the earth. In response to this crisis of reason in modernity, this collection of essays suggests the importance of knowing other-wise, non-rational ways of knowing which are wise to the other- a spiritual knowing of the heart with the passionate eye of love. Knowing Otherwise calls into question the Western philosophical tradition of giving pride of place to reason in the acquisition of knowledge. Reasoning is only one of many ways in which we engage, i.e. know, the world. We know more than we think. We know by touch, by feel, by taste, by sight, by sounds, by smell, by symbols, by sex, by trust - by means of every modality of human experience. Philosophy becomes, in the fashion of Levinas, the wisdom of love at the service of love. Tracing connections between epistemology, ethics, and spirituality - between knowing and the other, between an other and the Other - all the essays serve as points of convergence between postmodern discussions and the Calvinian spirituality which is the home for writers in this collection. In particular, this collection explores the contributions of feminist thought and thinkers such as Emmanuel Levinas, Richard Rorty, Jacqes Derrida, and John D. Caputo to a spiritually and ethically sensitive knowing. . . . remarkably accessible . . . indispensable for Christians who perceive a second, more positive postmodernism.-Third Way . . . remarkably accessible . . . indispensable for Christians who perceive a second, more positive postmodernism. A remarkable work of religious philosophy
By Robert Knetsch
The Institute of Christian Studies is housed in a small, nondescript historical building in downtown Toronto. Small as its structure appears to be, it feeds and fosters great minds, minds which can develop deep and applicable Christian philosophy. This compendium tackles philosophy in the post-modern world, unashamedly proclaiming faith as the centre of philosophy.
Coming from a generally a Reformed, and particularly, a Dooyweerdian perspective, these essays delve into areas that traditional philosophy often hesitates to tread. In doing so, however, by grasping at the advantages of proclaiming truth within a community that postmoderity allows, Olthius has brought together great minds for a great read.
This is not an easy work, especially for those who are not at least somewhat familiar with philosophy. And those who do not subscribe to Christianity may find this attempt brazenly subjective. I think that this is the point. For once, THESE philosophers admit to subjectivity as such. There is no such thing as objectivity.
Read, think and Enjoy!

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4 While Adler's biography does not alter the facts concerning Dr. King's life, it does present them in a way which makes complex issues seem overly simplified. Trying to detail the tremendous accomplishments of Dr. King in 48 pages dominated by illustrations leaves many important issues and events subject to cursory coverage. Injustice/reaction/change seems to occur on each page, which could give young readers the wrong impression of the actual magnitude of the sacrifice and turmoil involved in the civil rights movement. The illustrations are undistinguished charcoal sketches, some full page, often limiting the text to a paragraph or two. A list of important dates in Dr. King's life precedes the text. Mention is also made of the celebration of the anniversary of his birth, a fact lacking in a number of previous King biographies. While neither are of outstanding quality, both Bains' Martin Luther King (Troll, 1985) and Hunter's Martin Luther King, Jr. (Bookwright Pr, 1985) present a more complete treatment of Martin Luther King. About the Author
David Abraham Adler (born April 10, 1947) is the author of nearly 200 books for children and young adults, most notably the Cam Jansen mystery series, the "Picture Book of..." series, and several acclaimed works about the Holocaust for young readers. Adler was born in New York City, New York. He graduated from Queens College in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and education. For the next nine years, he worked as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Board of Education, while taking classes towards a master's degree in marketing, a degree he was awarded by New York University in 1971. Adler's next project, a series of math books, drew on his experience as a math teacher. In 1977, he created his most famous character, Cam Jansen, originally featured in Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds, which was published that year. Adler married psychologist Renee Hamada in 1973, and their first child, Michael, was born in 1977. By that time Adler had taken a break from teaching and, while his wife continued her work, he stayed home, took care of Michael, and began a full-time writing career. Adler has three children and one grandson. He lives in Woodmere, New York.

Robert Casilla, whose work has appeared in Black Enterprises magazine, The New York Times, and a number of other publications, received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He and his wife live in Yonkers, New York.

The Lincoln Assassination: Crime and Punishment, Myth and Memory A Lincoln Forum Book (The North's Civil War), by Craig L. Symonds, Frank

The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln remains one of the most prominent events in U.S. history. It continues to attract enormous and intense interest from scholars, writers, and armchair historians alike, ranging from painstaking new research to wild-eyed speculation. At the end of the Lincoln bicentennial year, and the onset of the Civil War sesquicentennial, the leading scholars of Lincoln and his murder offer in one volume their latest studies and arguments about the assassination, its aftermath, the extraordinary public reaction (which was more complex than has been previously believed), and the iconography that Lincoln's murder and deification inspired. Contributors also offer the most up-to-date accounts of the parallel legal event of the summer of 1865-the relentless pursuit, prosecution, and punishment of the conspirators. Everything from graphic tributes to religious sermons, to spontaneous outbursts on the streets of the nation's cities, to emotional mass-mourning at carefully organized funerals, as well as the imposition of military jurisprudence to try theconspirators, is examined in the light of fresh evidence and insightful analysis. The contributors are among the finest scholars who are studying Lincoln's assassination. All have earned well-deserved reputations for the quality of their research, their thoroughness, their originality, and their writing. In addition to the editors, contributors include Thomas R. Turner, Edward Steers Jr., Michael W. Kauffman, Thomas P. Lowry, Richard E. Sloan, Elizabeth D. Leonard, and Richard Nelson Current.

From Publishers Weekly
In the fourth volume from scholarly collective the Lincoln Forum (following Lincoln Revisited), 10 contributors turn their attention to the 16th president's assassination. Editors Holzer and Williams collaborate on an interesting (and well-illustrated) look at popular engravings and prints portraying Lincoln's final hours, some of which put a crowd of 50 at Lincoln's deathbed, in a room large enough for no more than a half-dozen. Richard Sloan looks at Lincoln's funeral procession and his time lying in state in New York City, with interesting insight for amateur urban historians. Thomas Lowry's "Not Everybody Mourned Lincoln's Death" is vivid but narrow, focusing on the easily-grasped point that many Americans, on the heels of the Civil War, were glad to see Lincoln dead. Multiple articles look at the trial of John Wilkes Booth's conspirators, often disagreeing about which of the accused, convicted and hanged were actually guilty. Thomas R. Turner notes that as early as the 1860s, "historians were agonizing that... there was little left to be said" about Lincoln; while this collection does reinforce that idea, it also turns up enough unanswered or undecided questions to hold readers' interest and promise more scholarship to come. Review

The nine essays in The Lincoln Assassination--all of them excellent--explore, in the words of the introduction, 'the legal, cultural, political, and even emotional consequences of the assassination.'-Henry Cohen

Unlike other scholars who couch assassin John Wilkes Booth's motivations in the politics of the time (his romanticization of the South and anguish at its perceived oppression), Holzer locates Booth's disenchantment within the bosom of the idiosyncratic, theatrical Booth clan.-Georgette Gouveia

Can there possibly be anything new to add to the millions of words already written about Abraham Lincoln's assassination and its aftermath? The answer is a resounding yes, and much of it is contained in this slim but enormously informative and thought-provoking volume. Exploring topics such as the identity of those who kept vigil at the President's deathbed, the joy that some Americans felt when they learned what Booth had done, and the character of the judge who presided over the conspirators' trial, this collection of essays offers welcome - and yes, new - insight into a tragedy whose history-shaping impact remains undiminished after 145 years.-Richard Moe, President

"The volume serves as an introductory sampling of those unfamiliar with the work of these scholars." -The Journal of Southern History

"The appearance of these thoughtful essays is thus useful for no other reason than to separate myth from history." -H-CivWar

Dead On
By Christian Schlect
The public memorialization of the death of Abraham Lincoln along with the trial of those who were accused of helping Booth carry out his infamous deed are at the core of this anthology.

As with almost any collection of this sort, some authors are better than others in terms of writing style. But all here are noted experts, and from each of these one can learn bits, at least, of interesting new information or different ways of evaluating the well-trod historical record.

For those who would like to learn more about John Surratt (the one who got away), I recommend "The Last Lincoln Conspirator" by Andrew C.A. Jampoler (2008).
