Ghost-Watching American Modernity: Haunting, Landscape, and the Hemispheric Imagination, by Maria del Pilar Blanco

In Ghost-Watching American Modernity, María del Pilar Blanco revisits nineteenth- and twentieth-century texts from Spanish America and the United States to ask how different landscapes are represented as haunted sites. Moving from foundational fictions to Westerns, Blanco explores the diverse ways in which ghosts and haunting emerge across the American hemisphere for authors who are preoccupied with evoking the experience of geographical transformations during a period of unprecedented development.

The book offers an innovative approach that seeks to understand ghosts in their local specificity, rather than as products of generic conventions or as allegories of hidden desires. Its chapters pursue formally attentive readings of texts by Domingo Sarmiento, Henry James, José Martí, W. E. B. Du Bois, Juan Rulfo, Felisberto Hernández, and Clint Eastwood. In an intervention that will reconfigure the critical uses of spectrality for scholars in U.S./Latin American Studies, narrative theory, and comparative literature, Blanco advances ghost-watching as a method for rediscovering haunting on its own terms.

Lincoln Revisited: New Insights from the Lincoln Forum (Lincoln Forum Books), by Harold Holzer, Dawn Vogel

From his cabinet's politics to his own struggles with depression, Lincoln remains the most written-about story in our history. And each year historians find something new and important to say about the greatest of our Presidents.

Lincoln Revisited is a masterly guide to what's new and what's noteworthy in this unfolding story-a brilliant gathering of fresh scholarship by the leading Lincoln historians of our time. Brought together by The Lincoln Forum, they tackle uncharted territory and emerging questions; they also take a new look at established debates-including those about their own landmark works.

Here, these well-known historians revisit key chapters in Lincoln's legacy-from Matthew Pinsker on Lincoln's private life and Jean Baker on religion and the Lincoln marriage to Geoffrey Perret on Lincoln as leader and Frank J. Williams on Lincoln and civil liberties in wartime.

The eighteen original essays explore every corner of Lincoln's world-religion and politics, slavery and sovereignty, presidential leadership and the rule of law, the Second Inaugural Address and the assassination.

In his 1947 classic, Lincoln Reconsidered, David Herbert Donald confronted the Lincoln myth. Today, the scholars in Lincoln Revisited give a new generation of students, scholars, and citizens the perspectives vital for understanding the constantly reinterpreted genius of Abraham Lincoln.

From Booklist
The career and character of Abraham Lincoln never ceases to intrigue and fascinate both historians and laymen. As the bicentennial of his birth approaches, we can expect an acceleration of examination of all aspects of his life. This series of essays by noted Lincoln scholars, originally presented as lectures at the Lincoln Forum, an annual meeting held each November in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is a superb collection that covers a wide variety of topics and offers fresh perspectives on Lincoln's political views, religious impulses, and some of his more controversial actions as president. Joseph Fornieri examines the basis of Lincoln's moral opposition to slavery as expressed in a speech delivered in Peoria, Illinois, in 1854. Lucas E. Moral describes the intersection between Lincoln's political and religious views as expressed in the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Craig Symons offers an interesting analysis of the often-contentious relationship between Lincoln and his naval commanders. These and the other essays make a valuable contribution. Freeman, Jay

"Leslie can draw a Rolls-Royce better than anybody else!" Such peer acclaim and encouragement generate incentive. Contemporary methods of art instruction (freedom of expression, experimentation, self-evaluation of competence and growth) provide a vigorous, fresh-air approach for which we must all be grateful.
New ideas need not, however, totally exclude the old. One such is the "follow me, step-by-step" approach. In my young learning days this method was so common, and frequently so exclusive, that the student became nothing more than a pantographic extension of the teacher. In those days it was excessively overworked.
This does not mean that the young hand is never to be guided. Rather, specific guiding is fundamental. Step-by-step guiding that produces satisfactory results is valuable even when the means of accomplishment are not fully understood by the student.

Bought this for my grandsons. They are ages 6 thru 9. Even the youngest can learn to draw from these books. Could not believe how fast they learned to draw. The step by step instructions are very easy and the children do not get discouraged when learning to draw.

bHonorable Mention for the 2014 Harry Levin Prizer

Interrogating how Alexandria became enshrined as the exemplary cosmopolitan space in the Middle East, this book mounts a radical critique of Eurocentric conceptions of cosmopolitanism. The dominant account of Alexandrian cosmopolitanism elevates things European in the city's culture and simultaneously places things Egyptian under the sign of decline. The book goes beyond this civilization/barbarism binary to trace other modes of intercultural solidarity.

Halim presents a comparative study of literary representations, addressing poetry, fiction, guidebooks, and operettas, among other genres. She reappraises three writers--C. P. Cavafy, E. M. Forster, and Lawrence Durrell--whom she maintains have been cast as the canon of Alexandria. Attending to issues of genre, gender, ethnicity, and class, she refutes the view that these writers' representations are largely congruent and uncovers a variety of positions ranging from Orientalist to anti-colonial. The book then turns to Bernard de Zogheb, a virtually unpublished writer, and elicits his Camp parodies of elite Levantine mores in operettas one of which centers on Cavafy. Drawing on Arabic critical and historical texts, as well as contemporary writers' and filmmakers' engagement with the canonical triumvirate, Halim orchestrates an Egyptian dialogue with the European representations.

Review

This book is firmly in the postcolonial mode, and on a topic that is both timely and important. As Egypt and other countries in the Middle East begin a political journey that takes them further and further out of the control of Western political institutions, it is essential to have nuanced studies that allow us to begin to understand how we (as Western writers and thinkers) have created comfortable spaces for certain non-western elites while excluding others.- Susan Stephens, Standford University

An excellent exercise in rigorous comparative literature scholarship.-Roger Allen, University of Pennsylvania

"The masterful culmination of years of research by a world expert on Alexandria. Halim introduces Egyptian writers, such as Edwar Al-Kharrat and Ibrahim Abdel Meguid, into the previously predominantly European dialogue."--Banipal

"This is a labour of love, written by no other than a native Alexandrian, Hala Halim, and bound up by a profound love for the coastal city." -Ahram Online

"Hala Halim, who was born and bred in Alexandria and teaches at New York University, has a unique perspective from which to view the four male writers whose work she studies in her book." -Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies Vol. 38 No. 2

"In her 'Alexandrian Cosmopolitanism; An Archive,' Hala Halim explores enduring and critical literary constructs of Alexandria and its long touted "cosmopolitanism. " Halim's Text will be of great interest to students of comparative literature, cosmopolitanism, postcolonial writing and Mediterranean studies." -Al Jadid

"The strength of this work lies in Halim's ability to offer a much-needed postcolonial critique on the ubiquitous literary trope of Alexandrians, as a cosmopolitan city." -Mara Naaman, International Journal of Middle East Studies

"Alexandrian Cosmopolitanism is a treasure trove of information and original, groundbreaking critical insights not only on four important authors of world literature, but also on a city which is as versatile and inspiring as Venice, for instance, with its uniqueness, literary aspect, and history."-Comparative Literature Studies

"Hala Halim's book is a provocative and erudite study of the modern European literary discourses that have constructed Alexandria as the exemplary site of what we might call cosmopolitan desire."-Arab Studies Journal

Life Behind Barbed Wire: The Secret World War II Photographs of Angelo M. Spinelli (World War II: The Global, Human, and Ethical Dimension)

Sergeant Angelo Spinelli was captured in North Africa by the Germans on Valentine's Day, 1943, and shipped to Stalag IIIB near Furstenburg, Germany. Using cigarettes obtained from the Red Cross, Spinelli bribed a camp guard to procure a Voitlander camera and film. Life behind Barbed Wire features photographs Spinelli took during his time in prison camp. Of the more than one thousand photographs Spinelli risked his life to take, more than one hundred appear in this book. The remarkable photographs, enhanced by Lewis H. Carlson's explanatory text, feature prisoners trading with the guards' combating ticks, lice, and other vermin, preparing meager rations on ingenious cooking contraptions, fighting off boredom by playing baseball, soccer, and football, putting on musical and dramatic theatre presentations, and worshiping in a chapel the prisoners themselves built. These snapshots give us a window on camp life, where catastrophe was normal and normalcy was often catastrophic. In addition, there are dramatic shots of liberation from Stalag IIIA, where Spinelli and some thirty-eight thousand other Allied prisoners had been moved during the final months of the war. Mounted as a traveling exhibit by the National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville, Georgia, 92 of these photographs are currently on display at the Italian American Museum in New York City.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Spinelli fell in love with photography in high school, he says, and, when drafted for World War II, was trained to make documentary movies as well as stills. He was a sergeant when captured in North Africa in 1943--ironically, while escorting German prisoners--and spent 22 months in Stalag IIIB, a camp for noncoms near Berlin. He quickly became an ace barterer with the guards and obtained the camera with which he surreptitiously took some 1,000 photos--400 of them of excellent quality, says POW historian Carlson, who, besides helping Spinelli shape his recollections into an absorbing, fluent memoir, contributes a fine, context-setting introduction. Of course, the pictures constitute the book's big initial draw. They show everything from the costumed casts of shows the theatrically inclined put on, baseball games, and other athletics; to bartering, queuing for chow, distributing mail and packages from home (the best food arrived that way); to makeshift amenities the men built, such as small cookstoves and a library that is near-reverently photographed; to the grim scene of a Russian prisoner shot dead while trying to retrieve cigarettes Americans threw over the wire between U.S and Russian sectors of the camp. Yet the text invaluably fleshes out this unique document, verifying that, if there are plenty of smiles in the pictures, there were more often frowns, sadness, and suicidal despair. Ray Olson

POW's Life in Germany
By James G. Wyman
My dad was in the same camp as Spinelli so I was interested to see his book. The photos are really, really good. It's amazing Spinelli was able to get away with taking so many. I never thought that there were that many prisoners in the camp. I really enjoyed the text too. It is sparse, but it is well-written and contains lots of details of life in a German prison camp. It's amazing how inventive the soldiers were at creating plays, musical performances, and a camp newspaper. All this, with the drama of World War II raging in the background. My dad used to say that the Germans told the Americans they would be in Germany the rest of their lives re-building the country. So it had to be devastating to be a POW with that uncertainty hanging over you. Spinelli's book is well worth the price. It's something I'll treasure as a memento of my father's 26 months as a POW in Germany.

Not Even Past: Race, Historical Trauma, and Subjectivity in Faulkner, Larsen, and Van Vechten (American Literatures Initiative), by Doroth

Not Even Past highlights references to nineteenth-century U.S. slavery and anti-Black racism in literary and photographic projects begun during the late 1920s and early 1930s, including novels by William Faulkner and Nella Larsen, and portraits by Carl Van Vechten. These texts share a representational crisis, in which distinctions between present, quotidian racism and a massive, fully racialized historical trauma disappear. All identify persistent historical traumatization with intense subjective states (including madness, religious ecstasy, narcissism, and fetishistic enjoyment), and each explores the conservative, even coercive social character of such links between psyche and history. When the past of enslavement is not even past, narration freezes, black and white women lose their capacity to question or resist social and domestic violence, and racial politics fail.Anticipating contemporary trauma studies by decades, these disparate modernists' works constitute not an expounded or avowed but an interstitial trauma theory, which finds its shape in the spaces left by conventional public discourse. Their works parallel important essays by psychoanalytic thinkers of the same era, including Joan Riviere, Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, and Walter Benjamin, and their joint explication of relationships among psyche, history, and race offers important resources for psychoanalytic approaches to racial difference today. Despite their analytic acuity, however, Faulkner, Larsen, and Van Vechten also themselves carry the traumatic past forward into the future. Indeed, the two novelists' tragic depictions of a triumphant color line and the photographer's insistence on an idiom of black primitivism lent support to white supremacy in the twentieth century. Yet even in their very failure, three U.S. modernists tell us that it is not enough simply to exercise critical acuity on the marks of past violence. Reading, however masterly, cannot interrupt a history in the midst of repeating itself; it can only itself reiterate the disaster.

Intriguing and valuable reading
By Midwest Book Review
Prejudice of the past leads to intolerance of the future. "Not Even Past: Race, Historical Trauma, and Subjectivity in Faulkner, Larsen, and Van Vechten" discusses race in early twentieth century literature, focusing on the writers of distinguished writers William Faulkner, Nella Larsen, and the art of Carl Van Vechten. Their work, under the scrutinous eyes of their contemporaries and more modern philosophy, has lead to much of the influence in modern white supremacy movements says author Dorothy Singer. Intriguing and valuable reading, "Not Even Past" is a must for any literary collection focusing on issues of race.

South Bronx Rising: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of an American City, by Jill Jonnes

Jill Jonnes's recounting of the rise, fall, and resurrection of the Bronx has become a classic of urban history. In this new edition, she describes in a new final chapter the extraordinary and monumental rebuilding of the borough by the grass-roots groups that was just getting underway in 1984. The original book was hailed as a vivid history of the Bronx from its origins as colonial farmlands to the borough's 1980s status as one of the nation's foremost urban disasters. The book tells the colorful story of the Bronx, starting with its development as a New York suburb and boomtown when hundreds of thousands of German, Irish, Italians, and above all, Jewish immigrants flowed into the borough to raise their families. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, assisted by his powerful lieutenant, Boss Ed Flynn, built vast Democratic majorities in the polyglot Bronx into political domination of New York and the nation. After World War II, the Bronx underwent its second boom, beginning with emigrants from Puerto Rico and blacks displaced from Manhattan. On their heels came the camp followers of modern urban poverty: drug dealers, real estate pirates, arsonists. By the mid-1970s the Bronx was burning. Block after block, once given over to working- and middle-class family life, was now utterly destroyed, abandoned, given up on. The teeming, populous Bronx had turned into an American urban desert. This borough, which in its heyday had produced such notable Americans as Clifford Odets, Paddy Cheyefsky, Lauren Bacall, Herman Wouk, Jules Feiffer, Jake LaMotta, Stanley Kubrick, E.L. Doctorow, Neil Simon, and Tony Curtis, now lay in ashes, visible to us mainly as a dreadful object lesson. Yet change was in sight. Even while the worst destruction was taking place, new forces were rising to set aside or remake the tired machinery of government, allying such institutions as the Catholic Church, insurance companies, and dedicated non-profits to rally the Bronx and turn the tide of urban thinking. In her new final chapter, Dr. Jonnes describes the triumph of the grass-roots groups as they fulfilled their great dream of rebuilding these devastated neighborhoods.

Missing the Important stuff
By Casual Reader
A chronicle of the rise, fall, and rise again of the Bronx heavily focused on the citizens initiatives to fight housing, drug, etc issues; there must have been a hundred of them in intimate detail, almost to the point of boredom. I did not come away with a strong feeling of what the citizens lives were really like - the intimate details of how they lived and why - and I think that the author made little commentary on the effectiveness of the citizen and political solutions focused on versus other alternatives e.g. job growth rather than available safe housing. EASY READING, POOR AS A LEARNING TOOL

A Bronx Tear
By A Customer
'South Bronx Rising' pulls no punches and painstankingly charts the penultimate urban destruction of the South Bronx. In someone else's hands, this story that charts the downfall of what was once a bountiful hinterland north of Manhatten, could have got bogged down in accusations and boring political meanderings. Instead, the story of the utter deveastation of what was at one time the playground of the princes of Manhatten, comes alive with a depth of feeling and poignancy, only someone who got into the blood and guts of the people of the Bronx could have written.
Kudos to Jonnes for evoking the 'neighborhood.' For that is what permeates this story of the downslide of a dream.
The Bronx started out as an oasis for countless immigrants who clawed there way out of the lower Eastside tenemants of NYC. First the Irish and the Germans, then the Jews and Italians.
The Bronx, with its verdant parks, luxurious apartment buildings and vibrant neighbrhoods offered a safe haven for aspiring immigrants to do good by their children and offer them a better way of life. As these immigrants 'moved on up' to the middle class and further north, the next wave moved on in. As it had always done.
But by the early sixties, existing housing was growing old, plumbing and heating systems needed to be replaced, but the culture of rent control saw landlords not able to afford the renovations.Welfare housing was a temporary boon to the coiffers, but in the end, was the end of the South Bronx.
The destruction starts, and it is as harrowing in the descriptions as it is in the photos. Acres of housing are abandonned by landlords. Heat, hotwater, electricity become things of the past. Junkies rule the streets and begin literaaly tearing buildings apart as they scavange for whatever copper and piping they can find to sell to suport their habits. The landlords realise they can make more money by burning their properties than by selling them. And the South Bronx begins to burn. And Burn. Until it is no more than worthless acres of rubble.
Jonnes chronicles the steady downfall of the Bronx in many compassionate stories, but her hard hitting investigative jouranlistic traits shine through as well. You are left in no doubt that the politicos of the South Bronx definitly were fiddling as the Bronx was burning.
I was there. I grew up in the South Bronx. This book is as real as it gets.
The final chapters deal with the rise of the South Bronx, but one wonders, at what cost? --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

"Rain Makes Applesauce" Words by Julian Scheer, Picture by Marvin Bileck The stars are made of lemon juice... ...and rain makes applesauce. And This Book Makes Great Joy - Forever!
By A Customer
Oh JOY! Indeed what an absolute joy to type in the title 'Rain Makes Applesauce', and find out that this glorious book is in print again!
I've read every other Amazon Customer Review of this book, & I agree with every single person: this is a Must-Have book for children AND adults. I have not seen it since my 4 years in college where I spent 4 years purchasing copies & either giving them as presents to my friends, or simply never getting them back when loaned. Hence when other reviewers right here tell you such things as 'my children had to take it out every other week from the library for YEARS because they adored it so much' - & that another actually went on to become an artist because of 'Rain' - & that Christmas simply STOPPED for yet another family while 2 excited daughters, now adult, put everything else aside until they'd re-read 'Rain' from end to end: BELIEVE THEM!
'Rain Makes Applesauce' is an infinitely memorable book with exquisite illustrations. It speaks to all whose hearts are young. Here is that rare, one-in-a million book suffused with an ineffable joy & replete with that exquisite silliness found only in the observations of those gifted with Innocence no matter what their chronological age. Children fall in love with this book the moment it begins. Adults do, too. Even if you don't have children: buy it for yourself. Or find a family to give it to, for the that singular pleasure found only in hearing the unstudied laughter of children welling up unstoppably and spilling out like - Yes! - like the most delicious of rains.

A VERY VERY POPULAR WORK FOR THE LITTLE ONES
By D. Blankenship
This strange, weird and fascinating work, Rain Makes Applesauce by Julian Scheer and Marvin Bileck dates back to 1964. Fortunately it is still with us today, but is getting more difficult to find. This work consists of very strange and nonsensical sentences. Examples of these are "Salmon slide down a Hippo's hide, and rain makes applesauce," and "Monkeys mumble in a jelly bean jungle, and rain makes applesauce." These silly words cover two pages in a scroll type script, across and through some of the most interesting illustrations I have ever seen in a children's book.

The illustrations are well; I can only call them mind boggling. They first appear to be quite cluttered and are extremely complicated and detailed. Now this is important....the adult mind will quite often glance at these pictures, become instantly overloaded, and then move on to the next page. Big, big, big mistake here! I did this myself when I first opened this book, but then I started watching children reading it. I mean reading it over and over and over again! I stopped, took a second look, and now I find myself reading it over and over and over again! There is something new to see each and ever time you go through this work! Each illustration covers two pages, is detailed in the extreme and lightly colored so as not to be completely overwhelming.

As to the text; it is a string of very silly statements, which by the way, is pointed out by a number of little pixie type kids hidden in the corner of many of the illustrations. You are reminded several times throughout the entire book that "Oh, you're just talking silly talk." If you read the text very closely and study the pictures very closely, you will find a common theme running throughout the book...Rain does indeed make applesauce!

This book was written for kids from age four to eight. The reading level is not very high, but in this case reading levels really are not the point, but imagination and stimulation is. About the only people I have found that do not like this particular work are adults, and I am sorry to say that those that did not like it sort of fell into the category of "big people with little or no imagination who forgot what it was like to be a kid again." PLEASE TAKE NOTE: The title of this book is "Rain Makes Applesauce," and not "Rain Makes Apple Sauce." This makes a big difference when you go to buy the book. This book is out of print, sadly, and it is noted that on the various sites that sell used books, the price of the misspelled title is almost double that of the correctly spelled one...same book, different price.

It is a childhood favorite of mine, one I have shared with numerous students. "Oh you're just talking silly talk," was a favorite saying from my childhood. Once I read this book to my students, they used the phrase too.

Yes, But Not Quite: Encountering Josiah Royce's Ethico-Religious Insight (American Philosophy Series), by Dwayne A. Tunstall

This book contends that Josiah Royce bequeathed to philosophy a novel idealism based on an ethico-religious insight. This insight became the basis for an idealistic personalism, wherein the Real is the personal and a metaphysics of community is the most appropriate approach to metaphysics for personal beings, especially in an often impersonal and technological intellectual climate. The first part of the book traces how Royce constructed his idealistic personalism in response to criticisms made by George Holmes Howison. That personalism is interpreted as an ethical and panentheistic one, somewhat akin to Charles Hartshorne's process philosophy. The second part investigates Royce's idealistic metaphysics in general and his ethico-religious insight in particular. In the course of these investigations, the author examines how Royce's ethico-religious insight could be strengthened by incorporating the philosophical theology of Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and Emmanuel Levinas's ethical metaphysics. The author concludes by briefly exploring the possibility that Royce's progressive racial anti-essentialism is, in fact, a form of cultural, antiblack racism and asks whether his cultural, antiblack racism taints his ethico-religious insight.

A Young Scholar Interprets Josiah Royce
By Robin Friedman
Josiah Royce (1855 -- 1916) was a leading figure in the "Golden Age of American philosophy" early in the Twentieth Century. This "Golden Age" is best remembered for its development of the philosophy of pragmatism; and Royce was for many years a colleague at Harvard of William James. Royce's thought went into eclipse after his death as it was found dated. His absolutistic idealism, rationalism, and religious approach to philosophy were not in the mainstream of American thought. Although Royce remains on the philosophical sidelines, a growing number of scholars and readers continue to study his books and find insights for their own thoughts.

Dwayne Tunstall is among the recent philosophers who have seriously engaged with Royce. Tunstall (b. 1979) received his graduate education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and currently is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Grand Valley State University, Michigan. Tunstall's "Yes, But not Quite: Encountering Josiah Royce's Ethico-Religious Insight" (2009) is his first book, and it is based on interests he developed and pursued during his graduate education. The book is published by Fordham University Press.

Together with other scholars, Tunstall has reread and rethought Royce to downplay the rationalism and absolutism for which his work has been marginalized. To simplify, Royce has often been seen as an Absolute Idealist who posits a single abstract idea, the Absolute, as including everthing that exists. Most philosophers have found no reason for thinking that there is such a thing as the Absolute. They have found the concept sterile and unhelpful and have concluded that it denies individuality to people and to particular things. Absolutistic philosophers typically do not rely on experience or observation to support their thought but instead rely on what they regard as logic and the force of argumentation. This form of extreme rationalism is also a difficult doctrine for most current philosophers to maintain.

Tunstall moves Royce away from absolute idealism and from rationalism by juxtaposing his work with that of an earlier American philosopher, George Howison (1834 -- 1916). Howison began as an early American follower of Hegel and Hegel's Absolute but soon moved away from this position to espouse another idealistic philosophical postion called personalism. Personalism is a philosophy difficult to pin down in Tunstall's account. Howison seems to think reality is spiritual, together with his fellow idealists. However, Howison is a pluralist, finding that each person is an irreducible entity, and that reality may be understood only through an understanding of a community of persons. Subsequent schools of personalism developed among theologians in Boston in the mid-20th Century and deeply influenced Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tunstall argues that Royce's idealism moved from absolutism and rationalism relatively early in his career as a result of a debate between Howison and Royce on the "conception of God" in 1895 in Berkeley. Howison severly attacked Royce for his absolutist monism and, for Tunstall, the criticism told. Royce, over the years, rethought the basis for his position. Instead of the alleged requirements of reason and logic, Royce located the source of his idealism in the human situation of finitude -- in the felt need for meaning, purpose, shared human experience, and transcendence, which could not be understood either through absolutistic idealism or through a hard-headed naturalistic philosophy. As modified, Royce's philosophy has strong ties to experiential philosophy (existentialism) or to American process philosophy, among other possibilities. For Tunstall, then Royce responded to Howison's criticisms by adopting much of Howison's position and reformulating and restating it with his own insights.

Tunstall's short book is in two parts. In the first part, Tunstall describes the Royce-Howison 1895 debate in the context of the works Royce had published before that time and then published thereafter. He finds that Royce's thought remains idealistic and religious, but that it becomes experientially based. In his latter works, Royce comes to emphasize the nature of human community, to counter an excessive view of the nature of individualism. Royce posits as an ideal the "Beloved Community", a concept which was later adopted by Dr. King. Royce also tended to see God as an ongoing growth of love and sympathy among people rather than as the all-powerful, omniscient being of traditional theology.

In the second part of the book, Tunstall compares his interpretation of Royce with other recent scholars. The question would be whether Royce saw his philosophy as more akin to pragmatism -- looking at consequences -- or to realism, with Tunstall opting for the latter interpretation. The book includes brief comparisons of Royce's thinking with that of Dr. King and of the Jewish philosopher Emanuel Levinas, with Tunstall concluding that Levinas' philosophy of interpersonality can be used to clarify and deepen Royce's insights. The book ends with a short, inconclusive consideration of Royce's attitudes towards race.

In its short compass, this book attempts to cover too much. On a personal level, the writing is often engaging. But the issues, arguments, and concepts need substantially more development. This is a good first book by a promising, enthusiastic young scholar on an important but neglected figure in American thought. I hope Tunstall may enjoy a productive career. I have enjoyed getting to know Royce's thought over the past several years, and Tunstall helped me understand the reasons for my interest in this philosopher.
