Hidden Intercourse: Eros and Sexuality in the History of Western Esotericism, by Wouter J. Hanegraaff, Jeffrey J. Kripal

From rumors about gnostic orgies in antiquity to the explicit erotic symbolism of alchemical texts, from the subtly coded eroticism of medieval kabbalah to the sexual magic practiced by contemporary occultists and countercultural translations of Asian Tantra, the history of Western esotericism is rich in references to the domains of eros and sexuality. This volume, which brings together an impressive array of top-level specialists, is the first to analyze the eroticism of the esoteric without sensationalism or cheap generalizations, but on the basis of expert scholarship and attention to textual and historical detail. While there are few domains where the imagination may so easily run wild, the various contributions seek to distinguish fact from fiction-only to find that historical realities are sometimes even stranger than the fantasies. In doing so, they reveal the outlines of a largely unknown history spanning more than twenty centuries.

Review

Hidden Intercourse is a book that turns people's heads around, so thatthey can never think of sex the same way again.-Joscelyn Godwin

A collection of essays addressing a doubly fascinating topic, namely, theintersection of the erotic and the esoteric in western culture from ancient Greece to contemporary California--where west meets east, as the American counterculture supplements its already eclectic garb with the mantle of a refashioned Asian Tantra.-Virginia Burrus

A thoughtful, well-written, and extremely wide-ranging text that examines the crucial role of eros/sexuality in the western esoteric tradition.-G. William Barnard

A smorgasbord of sexually occult revelations
By P. Nagy
Excerpt: In recent years, the academic study of Western esotericism has been developing rapidly from a somewhat obscure specialty pursued by a few dedicated researchers into a burgeoning professional field of scholarly activity and international organization. Once a domain restricted to the relatively secluded circles of specialists and hence hidden from the sight of most academic and non-academic readers, it is now becoming an increasingly popular topic of public and critical discussion in the context of journals, monographs, conferences, and scholarly organizations. The book you now hold in your hands is the fruit, one of many, of this growing branch of knowledge.
That there are connections between Western esotericism and the domains of eros and sexuality (which extend far beyond what we nor¬mally mean by "sex") has, of course, been recognized before, not least by practitioners, and the various contributions to this volume provide abundant illustration of that fundamental and indubitable fact. But scholarly analyses of how and why the two domains of esotericism and eroticism are so intimately interwoven are difficult to find. Moreover, the closely related problem (or is it a promise?) of how the history of sexuality in the West might be related to the history of Western eso-tericism implies a range of further questions that still remains virtually untouched. In the absence of any such developed analysis, only a few tentative suggestions will be made here. In a historical field this new, this rich, and this provocative, all we can reasonably do is point to the heavy fruit hanging low on the branches, and then hope a sufficient number of readers will choose to begin plucking it. Our own general sense is that such fruit contains its own important truths, but these are, at best, difficult to grasp for a whole host of intellectual, linguistic, political, historical, and social reasons...
The essayists ask and advance their own specific questions and proffer their own answers. Among their numerous illuminations, we might briefly mention the following figures and themes, not to summarize the content of Hidden Intercourse, much less to offer any premature closure, but simply in a spirit of temptation:
A common esoteric reading of the fruit of the garden of Eden as a patent sexual metaphor, with sexual differentiation understood either as a sign of the "Fall" and a subsequent mortality (hence the ascetic components of these traditions), or as the bipolar basis for a sexual technique of reunion and restoration of the primordial Adamic androgyne (hence the erotic practices of these traditions);
An ancient Christian mystery involving sacramental sexual union in the "bridal chamber";
The Levites of ancient Christian heresiology as a homosexual "priestly" trope;
Hermeneutical techniques that out-Freud Freud through readings like that of Psalm 1 and its flowing water as symbolic of seminal emission, or the Christian eucharist as a kind of secret spermatophagy or sperm-eating (with examples from the fourth century to the twentieth); Sufi saints coupled spiritually with jinniya or feminine spiritual beings in order to increase and transmit their baraka or supernatural power; The erotic nature of secrecy itself as a simultaneous revealing and concealing, that is, as a kind of linguistic strip-tease;
God as the delight of all delights, erotic and otherwise;
Mary as both the virgin mother and bride-lover of Christ; Marsilio Ficino as a conflicted homoerotic scholar who turned to an interpretation of Plato's Symposium at the instigation of his younger male friend in order to work through his sexual melancholy; Sulphur as paternal seed, mercury as menstrual blood;
Two-headed hermaphrodites;
Male sex with a (male) bull hide;
A popular sixteenth-century artist who drew things like women rub¬bing (psychotropic?) ointment on their genitals in order to "fly" to the Witches' Sabbath, a naked witch looking backwards through her vagina to see the Devil (on a Christmas card no less), and a dragon performing cunnilingus on a witch;
The Platonic model of the brain as producer of semen, with the spinal cord as the transmitter of this cerebral substance to the penis;
A Christian, goddess-like Sophia, who marries herself to a German theosopher on Christmas day, sensually "plays" with him for years, finds an appropriate house for him in Amsterdam, and then helps edit her departed lover's letters through a disciple;
The forward-looking social liberalism of the nineteenth-century American Spiritualists, which included such marvels as Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president of the United States, who also happened to be a famous spokesperson for free love, which she believed would help implement a kind of millennial utopia in which young women would date the dead;
Thomas Lake Harris married to his divine faerie, the Lily Queen, and living in celibate chastity with his second wife;
The "internal respiration" of Harris and his community, experienced as a kind of bodily electricity flowing from the reproductive organs, particularly the vagina;
Hashish, magic mirrors, and a cosmic domain of scintilla-like souls or monads, each a reflection of God as Light accessible through the secrets of sexual magic;
The father of psychoanalysis in Italy involved in occult traditions;
The "practice of separation" of the solar Self and the alchemical creation, through sexual magic, of a second subtle "glorious body" to survive the physical death of the mortal frame;
A fictional Tantric town in the American Midwest called "Paradox," where the Wizard of Oz meets the human potential movement, Asian Tantra meets Western sexual magic, and the counterculture comes to the heartland...

One of the best and most authoritative overviews available.
By The Mysterious Mr. E.
Not unlike The Dictionary of Gnosis and Western Esotericism, this book contains among the best writing currently available in English on a number of lesser known currents of sexual magick in the West: such as the Fraternitas Saturni. Academics are starting to 'get it,' at least on an intellectual level and what they related are typically well sourced and authoritative insights into relatively arcane matters, which have here to fore suffered under a cloud of obscurantist and obfuscating occultnik sensationalist blather. This quote from the Introduction indicates the approach taken to this subject:
... what is so striking about so many of the figures treated in these essays is their conviction that in the depths of human sexuality lies hidden _the_ secret of religion, occultism, magical power; spirituality, transcendence, life, God, Being itself. This astonishing connection, such figures would insist, is not metaphorical, or rhetorical, or symbolic, as some would prefer to have it. It is fundamental, cosmic, ontological, religious. We are dealing here, then, with a metaphysics of sex, itself intimately entwined with the destiny of the soul."

Loquacious Disappointment
By Innocence Branch
Loved the cover art but the book was entirely too tedious to get beyond the initial chapter..... I wanted to love it or even like it (and I am a full time graduate student reading dense material all of the time). Couldn't get any pleasure from it. Very disappointed

His Song: The Musical Journey of Elton John, by Elizabeth Rosenthal

Few artists in the music world have achieved the awesome success of Elton John. From his self-titled debut album in 1970 to his Academy Award for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to his music for the hit Broadway musical Aida, he has been lauded both for his recordings and his extravagant live performances.

His Song is destined to become the definitive critical volume about this remarkable artist. More comprehensive and in-depth than other biographies, this authoritative reference reveals the full story behind all Elton’s recordings; offers a complete chronicle of the artist’s concert tours, including his 1979 tour of the Soviet Union and his 1994–1995 tour with fellow piano superstar Billy Joel; divulges how he grew from a meek, unassuming man into a personality powerhouse and major superstar; and uncovers the untold story behind his flamboyant costumes and why he wore them.

This enlightening biography also examines the ebb and flow of this outstanding artist's career. It discloses the real reason for Elton’s commercial downturn and his difficult business relationship with David Geffen; his “coming out,” first as a bisexual and finally as a gay man; his problems with drugs, alcohol, bulimia, and sexual addictions; his relationship with AIDS sufferer Ryan White; and much more. It also tells the true story regarding his performance at Princess Diana’s funeral and his rewriting of “Candle in the Wind,” which went on to become the biggest-selling single in music history. Plus, over 40 photographs and a complete discography chronicle the breadth of this legend’s celebrated career.

From Library Journal
Rosenthal, a freelance writer, here attempts only the second serious biography of the bespectacled pianist (after Philip Norman's Elton John, LJ 2/1/92) and the first to include significant critical analysis of the star's music. As a biographer, Rosenthal relies exclusively on secondary sources to cobble together John's story, risking the perpetuation of inaccuracies. She also presents an assembly line of factoids but fails to give the reader a broader understanding of the man. As a critical analysis of John's music, the book is more successful, but here, too, are puzzling inconsistencies. Rosenthal takes pains to discuss every album track John has recorded in his 30-plus-year career, yet she ignores the plethora of nonalbum B-sides that he has released on singles a significant oversight. Oddly, the author devotes considerable space to lesser-known songs and only two sentences to "Your Song," arguably John's most beloved composition. Still, as a secondary selection, Rosenthal's well-meaning work is vastly superior to Susan Crimp and Patricia Burstein's The Many Lives of Elton John (Birch Lane Pr., 1992). Despite being dated, Norman's book remains the most definitive account. Lloyd Jansen, Stockton-San Joaquin Cty. P.L., CA

From Booklist
Documentation rather than biography is the raison d'etre of new books on aging rock superstars.Rosenthal on Elton John details all one could ever want to know about the intricacies of, say, "The Bitch Is Back." Copiously annotated, the dense recording-by-recording study comprises a full discography with some lamentable limitations; all songs and composers are listed, but none of the sidemen who played with John on recordings. Entertaining yet meaningful, disposable yet probably significant, John's continued popularity seems to guarantee readers for this good source of information on the working aspects of a career so voluminous that people will be serious about it, even if most of the songs are little more than Paul McCartney's "silly love songs." A Supurb Biography of the Songs
By LEONARD HERMAN
While Philip Norman's semi-authorized Sir Elton remains the definitive biography of Elton John, His Song is a good look at the songs themselves. The two books complement one another, not compete.
While some biography is included in His Song, the major emphasis is on the songs. Rosenthal presents the songs in chronological order and she explains what each song means, an event in itself especially when Bernie Taupin's lyrics are concerned.
The book is excellent but there are some unfortunate downsides. In many cases we have to read about songs twice. First, when they are recorded, and again when the album was released. Sometimes it's hard to remember what year I'm reading about because I know a song was released in, say 1984, but i'm reading about when it was recorded in 1983.
While the book is complete with album songs and singles, some obscure releases and b-sides are missing. Nothing is mentioned about From Denver To LA, The Goaldigger's Song, and Sick City, to name a few. When were they recorded and what was the circumstances behind each one? I'd like to know.
One thing that bothered me throughout the book was the font. For some reason, the numeral '1' was presented as an upper-case 'I', through-out. I found this distracting.
The book did present a game though. Each chapter is named after a song and most of the sections are culled from song lyrics. The game was to figure out what song the lyrics were taken from!
All in all, His Song is a wonderful tribute to the songs of Elton John, which no Elton John fan should be without.

A Fantastic Biography of a Phenomenal Career
By Erik M. Williams
I thoroughly enjoyed this deep dive into the inspiration behind Elton John's immense catalog of work. It was meticulously researched and extremely readable without being biased - no mean feat for an author who is clearly also a fan. While my desire for a Volume 2, picking up where His Song left off prior to the recording of "Songs From the West Coast, may never be realized, I will still hold out hope for a follow-up offering from this talented author.

E.J. biography centers around the music
By Gary Gardner
Seeing as Elton John's career in popular music has been going strong for well over thirty years, it is easy to see why there are so many biographies about him. And why not? After all, John has always been an artist of unusual candor, not to mention unusual stage uniforms running from the trashy to the just-plain garish. But the music has always been the main thing, the reason his fans throughout the years still pay good money to see him, even at the ripe old age of 54.
Elizabeth Rosenthal's take on Elton revolves predominantly on the music in this lastest John biography. Those looking for fresh perspectives behind the man, rather than the performer, will be disappointed; certainly those more interested in the recording and performing parts of Elton's life will be most thrilled.
In fact, some of the more interesting items about E.J.'s off-stage life are given short shrift, indeed. Rosenthal hardly mentions the musician's public and private tiffs with his father, his early struggle with his dubious sexuality, or even his renowned drinking/drugging binges...and subsequent recovery in the early 1990's. Only scant mention is made of these life stories, which for better or worse have molded the man into what he is today. Many of the quotes you see (and they are few and far between) are ones given many years ago to other publications. Apparently, Rosenthal had the pleasure of meeting the singer in Atlanta, GA, where he makes his American home, but was apparently not able to interview him. Perhaps it's because John was still managed by the imposing John Reid, who has since been canned by Elton after some financial treachery done by the one person the megastar trusted for almost twenty-five years; Reid had been known to stand in the way of independent biographers who wanted fresher quotes from the star.
It's obvious to anyone who reads the book that Rosenthal is a big fan; she even runs a website devoted to her subject. She does an admirable job, however, of noting many of Elton's career missteps, if not all of them. She is less critical, however, of some of his missteps in his personal life, choosing instead to merely recount these unfortunate events.
Where Rosenthal eventually fails is in neglecting certain events in John's career that proved noteworthy. For instance, she doesn't elucidate in even one sentence why Elton split with lyricist Bernie Taupin after the recording of 1976's "Blue Moves." The motives behind the separation of the two in work collaboration is explained only briefly later on in the book. Other biographies had done a better job with this issue. After all, Taupin was as instrumental to the Elton John hits machine of the early-mid 1970's as the pianist himself. Without Taupin's entrancing lyrics, Elton's music had little outreach beyond some nice melodies constructed here and there.
Still, I enjoyed the copious background on the music. Rosenthal examines each album track, one by one, dissecting them and explaining why each one succeeded or failed. Her prose is definitely unique, and it provides an upbeat style that makes it an absolute joy to read. Those looking for more personal stories about the singer's extremely interesting life will only thirst for more, and are urged to seek out the various other E.J. biographies available.

Political Magic: British Fictions of Savagery and Sovereignty, 1650-1750, by Christopher F. Loar

Political Magic examines early modern British fictions of exploration and colonialism, arguing that narratives of intercultural contact reimagine ideas of sovereignty and popular power. These fictions reveal aspects of political thought in this period that official discourse typically shunted aside, particularly the political status of the commoner, whose "liberty" was often proclaimed even as it was undermined both in theory and in practice. Like the Hobbesian sovereign, the colonist appears to the colonized as a giver of rules who remains unruly.

At the heart of many texts are moments of savage wonder, provoked by European displays of technological prowess. In particular, the trope of the first gunshot articulates an origin of consent and political legitimacy in colonial showmanship. Yet as manifestations of force held in abeyance, these technologies also signal the ultimate reliance of sovereigns on extreme violence as the lessthan-mystical foundation of their authority.

By examining works by Cavendish, Defoe, Behn, Swift, and Haywood in conjunction with contemporary political writing and travelogues, Political Magic locates a subterranean discourse of sovereignty in the century after Hobbes, finding surprising affinities between the government of "savages" and of Britons.

Review

"Political Magic finds an intriguing and persuasive through-line in these texts that has not been noticed before and that raises some interesting new points about way these writers were negotiating the idea of civilization"-Laura Rosenthal, University of Maryland

"Christopher F. Loar has written an important study of the relationship between technology and power in fiction of the long eighteenth century, shedding light on the connection between authority and violence in both English politics and colonial conquest. Political Magic will be of special interest to scholars of Cavendish, Behn, Defoe, Swift and Haywood."-Nicholas Hudson, University of British Columbia

"Any one interested in the tradition of the modern novel not indebted to realism or how to artfully combine theory, politics, and literature will find much to admire in Loar's Political Magic. Exploring the way that magic, deceit, and sovereignty were habitually yoked in writers whose politics were as various as Cavendish, Behn, Defoe, Swift, and Haywood, Loar's book examines the way that their fictions repeatedly stage a foundational political moment that inaugurates a modern although ambiguous civilizing project, one fraught with technologically-enhanced violence, deferred violence, and magical instruments rather than reason or rhetoric as techniques of government. Loar shows through a series of persuasive close readings of political theory and fiction that liberalism, at its inception, registers pessimism about the tendency of sovereignty to exceed the law and turn subjects into enemies."-Roxann Wheeler, The Ohio State University

"As pyrotechnic as it is closely reasoned, this bold and convincing new book looks at the unlikely role that spectacular technologies of domination and enchantment played in the making of "modern" political community. Christopher Loar punctures the myth of modernity by reversing two standard narratives about the decline of magic and the rise of the
liberal subject. That subject's story, disturbingly beholden to technologies of violence and enchantment, is told through insightful new readings of Swift, Defoe, Behn, and Haywood. "Political Magic" reunites these writers and their fictions with the political philosophy and
savagely wondrous colonial practices of the seventeenth century."-Jayne Lewis, University of California, Irvine

Mielziner: Master of Modern Stage Design, by Mary Henderson

Jo Mielziner (1901-1976) was an acclaimed scenic designer of the American theatre. Over five decades his career spanned the flowering of the modern theatre in the USA, and he designed many of its most famous productions, including "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Death of a Salesman", "Guys and Dolls" and "Carousel". He worked with a roster of great playwrights, directors and producers on a staggering total of 260 shows, many of them theatrical premieres, but also including ballets, operas and motion pictures. He pioneered many concepts of design - such as the capturing of a visual metaphor for the production -that are taken for granted today. His influence for succeeding generations has been enormous. This study covers his life and work and is illustrated with sketches and fully-rendered designs.

From Library Journal
Every once in a while a book comes along that is both beautiful and informative, and this gorgeous book on the great stage designer, Jo Mielziner, is one of them. Mielziner is considered one of the greatest (perhaps the greatest) set designers of all time. He designed the original sets for A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, and Carousel and operas such as Don Giovanni. This book covers his entire career, bringing the reader into the golden world of Broadway at a time when it really was a place of magic and divine inspiration. The 140 color photos are marvelous, though one wishes for more of the larger pictures (economics, surely; the $45 price tag is a bargain). Henderson, a journalist and theater historian of international reputation, has written a fascinating text, with background details that offer insights into this crazy world. Highly recommended for all academic art and theater collections and public libraries with patron interest. Susan L. Peters, Univ. of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston

From Booklist
For more than 50 years, from 1925 to 1976, stage designer Jo Mielziner was a force to be reckoned with on Broadway and beyond. Part of a generation that took the radical design and lighting ideas of Gordon Craig and Adolph Appia and made them their own, Mielziner designed sets for the premier productions of many of the plays we now consider modern American classics, including A Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire , and Death of a Salesman. An amazingly prolific designer, Mielziner also made his mark on American musical theater, designing shows as different as South Pacific , Guys and Dolls , and Gypsy. This glossy, lavishly illustrated, oversize book presents hundreds of Mielziner's designs and drawings, many in color, documenting the full arc of his career, from '20s work with the Theatre Guild to his final projects, assisting the design of new theaters throughout America. The fine illustrations are accompanied by Henderson's exhaustively researched, somewhat dry biography of the designer. Jack Helbig

A must, must, must have!!!
By Amazon Customer
Wow!!! Ms. Henderson has written an amazing book. Not only does it have the most beautiful color reproductions of Mielziner's work I've ever seen and in profusion, but she has also written a rich and detailed biography of Jo Mielziner.
I had been waiting for this book, but it exceeded all expectations. It is a invaluable history of modern American Stage Design, covering all the important personalities in fascinating detail, tracing the artistic progression and growth of American theater.
Anyone with an interest in American Theater in the 20th Century will benefit and be informed by this book. Her breadth of knowledge is astonishing and her digressions into side alleys are always informative and fascinating. She uses facts and figures to illuminate the shifting perspectives of the "business" of Broadway. And her analysis of design trends are intelligent and enlightening. (I would only quibble with her overly positive view of Mielziner's Architectural consulting.)
As a picture book it's great! As a biography it is marvelous! As a history of 20th Century Broadway Theater it is a must have.

Jo Mielziner - a forgotten genius
By Pauline Rulf
Mary Henderson has given us an invaluable insight in the world of Jo Mielziner. So often the names of creative people who ensure that a production "works" are never known or easily forgotten by the viewing audience. The set and lighting designs of Mielziner for plays and shows like A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, South Pacific, etc. were considered brilliant and groundbreaking by the theatre world of his time. Mielziner also greatly influenced modern stage design (the East Room stage in the White House and the Denver Center Theatre, for example) and with his art and creative insight put his unique stamp on the world of modern theatre until this day. An overview of his work was long overdue. But Mary Henderson has given us far more than that. She has given us Jo Mielziner, the person, by providing fascination facts and photographs of Jo's private life. The many colorful prints of his designs and the enjoyable flow of the text make this book a "must have" and a wonderful gift for anyone interested in the history of 20th century theatre.

Comprehensive but not critical
By Amazon Customer
Mary Henderson has done a great job of cataloging Mielziner's life and work, but in the end that's all she has done. The book lacks a critical bite, at times seeming a little too biased towards its subject. Mielziner comes off as having flawless work, with any bad results being caused by narrow-minded or misguided collaborators.
The book also disappoints in that while it has many renderings, it lacks any ground plans, or sections, or other working drawings. It's very difficult to get a true sense of someone's design without seeing a ground plan. Perhaps they are not available, or maybe they didn't seem pretty enough to include.
To be fair, Henderson has done a great service to the theater community in writing this book, and while she doesn't give herself freedom to do close readings of Mielziner's designs, the comprehensiveness of her work does have its own value. It's too bad - in the end she has successfully argued her case of Mielziner as a seminal figure in theatrical design, but she doesn't follow through and give his work the critical assessment deserving of a true master artist.

An infant's first cry is one of the many potent images that leap out of this collection of poems recorded from the oral traditions of several American Indian tribes. "Tble," the title of a poem and a baby girl, is "named for the cold star / appearing after the blizzard ceased its wail." "Sun, Moon, Stars," a poem from an Omaha ceremony for the newborn cries, "Hear this mother! / A new life has come among you. / Make its life smooth." A Pauite cradle song evokes familiar lullaby refrains: "Coo . . . ah . . . Coo! / Little Dove, / The wind is rocking / Thy nest in the pine bough, / My arms are rocking / Thy nest, little Dove. / Coo . . . ah . . . coo!" An Osage chant prepares a young man for his first buffalo hunt; the Mescalero Apache contribute "The Four Corners of the Universe," which declares to girls, "Be strong. For you are the mother of a people." Gammell works in an earthy vein unlike anything he has attempted before. Giving himself over to the patterns and themes suggested by each snippet or riddle-like verse, he scratches out strong woven symbols in colored pencil, or paints watercolor scenes on dappled pages resembling animal skins. Many artistic styles are represented, as if he gathered his sources from as many tribes as Sneve did her poems. Like a trail of stepping stones, this exquisite collection may lead readers to other sources, such as the works of Paul Goble. Together, poet/compiler and artist offer small but satisfying glimpses of some of the rich and varied Indian lore which--if abundant--has been mostly overlooked. Ages 6-9.

College student's review
By Paula J. Johnson
This book is a collection of thirteen poems. The poems are all about Native American Indians. Sioux, Navajo, Mescalero Apache tribe members wrote some of the poetry in this collection. Four poems were written by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve. The collection offers a small glimpse of the Native American traditions. It shows the life of Native Americans by sharing a newborn ceremony, a Hopi lullabye, a Paiute cradle song, Zuni corn ceremony, a song for young girls, a Dakota elk song, a prayer before a young man's first buffalo hunt, and a myth of the Wintu.

I would recommend this book. It is important to discuss different cultures with children, and this book shows a few Native American tribes. This book could be used to introduce a unit on Native Americans, and most of the poems in this collection are short and easy to read.

Beyond the Mother Tongue examines distinct forms of multilingualism, such as writing in one socially unsanctioned "mother tongue" about another language (Franz Kafka); mobilizing words of foreign derivation as part of a multilingual constellation within one language (Theodor W. Adorno); producing an oeuvre in two separate languages simultaneously (Yoko Tawada); and mixing different languages, codes, and registers within one text (Feridun Zaimoglu).

Honorable Mention, 2014 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies
By Monica Caro
The $10,000 Laura Shannon Prize awarded an honorable mention to Yasemin Yildiz for this book, which the jury commended, stating "No problem is more crucial for European identity than that of the relationship of the monolingual to the multilingual and the relationship of each to the concept of the nation-state. Yasemin Yildiz’s Beyond the Mother Tongue is a finely-crafted exploration of a group of 20th-century German writers which excitingly recasts how these authors are defined or define themselves in terms of German as a language, revealing how the powerfully affective notion of the 'mother tongue' functions for writers as different as Kafka (and Yiddish), Adorno (and the Fremdwort), Takada (and Japanese), and Zaimoglu (and Turkish). Her studies disrupt a 'monolingual paradigm,' showing how multiple our relations with languages can be. Yildiz brilliantly highlights what is at stake, ethically and politically, in the monolingual paradigm and in resistance to it, even where—perhaps especially where—the resistance might simply appear as linguistic playfulness. At stake is whether national identities can come to terms with multilingual realities. All future work will have to take account of her innovative work.." The final jury included eminent scholars Russell A. Berman (Walter A. Haas Professor in the Humanities, Stanford University), Thomas Elsaesser (Professor of Film and Television Studies Emeritus, University of Amsterdam), Jennifer Herdt (Gilbert L. Stark Professor of Christian Ethics, Yale Divinity School), Peter Holland (McMeel Family Chair in Shakespeare Studies, University of Notre Dame), Alasdair MacIntyre, (Professor of Philosophy Emeritus, University of Notre Dame).

Between the Bylines: A Father's Legacy (World War II: The Global, Human, and Ethical Dimension), by Susan E. Wiant

Thoburn H. Toby Wiant was a fighter from an early age, and words were his weapons of choice. During World War II, he fought to scoop stories from rival reporters on the front lines as an Associated Press war correspondent. In chronicling the war from the China-Burma-India and European theaters of operation, he skillfully reported the battles of an all-too-real war while often in personal peril. In letters to his parents he revealed his personal reactions to the war. In this remarkable book, his daughter brings together Wiant's printed articles and his private letters. With her aid, we view the war through his eyes as we watch a scrappy boy grow into manhood and an eager cub reporter develop into a seasoned war correspondent.

The real life of a war correspondent
By Bill Sonsin
Fiction is full of glamorous stories of wars and the people who fought them and those who observed them. As usual, these fictional tales rarely come close to reality.

In "Between the Bylines", the author tells the story of her father, a real life observer and writer of World War II. A born writer and newsman, Toby Wiant went to Egypt, then to India and China and onto Europe before returning to the Pacific theater at the end of the war. Exciting? Not always; he got to fly along on numerous bombing missions over enemy territory and see the action firsthand, but there were long stretches where he had to look for something to report. Trying? Yes; living conditions could be elegant and sometimes were downright primitive. Rewarding? Absolutely. Wiant got to experience firsthand aspects of many events that were changing the world while getting to meet and know many of the famous people of his time, such as Chiang Kai Shek, General "Vinegar" Joe Stilwell, and Eisenhower.

The book is not just a war story. It also answers the questions of how a kid from Indiana got to do this and what he did after the war was over. Highly recommended for those interested in a behind the scenes account of the Second World War and those who lived it.

A Must Read
By Melinda
I am not a history buff nor have ever been interested in war stories. But "Between the Bylines" captivated me from start to finish. It not only gives the reader a look at WWII from a very different perspective but it reveals the amazing qualitites of Toby Wiant, war correspondent, business professional and devoted husband and father. He was a man of principles and work ethics so often forgotten in today's society. He had incredible courage by putting his life on the line, time and again, to be with the soldiers, in action, to experience what they were experiencing in order to accurately report what was taking place. This is a true adventure story written by his daughter with honesty, love and admiration.

Fascinating. Educational. Compelling.
By Adele B. Meffley
"Between the Bylines" pairs WWII war correspondent Toby Wiant's expansive and harrowing experiences with his daughter Susan's comprehensive narration. Susan chronicles her father's professional struggles and soaring triumphs. She guides us further into the depths of Wiant's personal life as he returns exhausted from war to then battle alcoholism, overwork, and to take on his toughest assignment, his own life-threatening illnesses. This book pays tribute to a heroic father from a devoted daughter who shares with us his many accomplishments and afflictions with honesty and compassion. It is a FASCINATING, COMPELLING read.
