Please do not let the topic scare you away.
By Landon Harris
A gritty but loving story about a young man torn between wanting to please his dog fighting father and his love for his bull terrier Grip. The boy's father having seen Grip fail to be the fighting dog that his ferocious sire Madman is wants nothing to do with Grip seeing him as a stain upon his gladiatorial bloodlines. In the end there is only one way for the boy to keep Grip and put a stop to his families blood sporting traditions.

This may not be a story you want young children to read but it is a good one with a good morale. It contains dog fighting, badger and dog baiting. If you liked White Fang or Call of the Wild it is quite reminiscent of Jack Londons beautiful yet fierce description of dogs and their behavior. It tells of a fiercely loving and loyal bull terrier and a lonely boy that has to make some choices between pleasing his father or losing his best friend. While it may not be the politically correct style of writing preferred by today's parents it is honestly not much more violent than Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, or the previously mentioned Jack London novels.

I would give this ZERO stars if I could. ...
By Mary Laiuppa
I would give this ZERO stars if I could.

This is about raising pit bulls for dog fighting. If that weren't inappropriate enough, the book concludes with Grip in a dog fight with the Dad's dog he wins to the extent that he is the only dog to survive, if you get my drift. And the Dad is OK with that, congratulating his son for training the dog so well.

Hardly an appropriate book, even for adults.

Old fashioned and charming
By E. Strickenburg
As soon as December rolled around, I knew I had to find a good illustrated copy of "The Night Before Christmas" to share with my 15-month-old son. I've always loved the lilt and old fashioned charm of this poem, and the way it adds to the aura of the season.

This was just what I was looking for. Tomie de Paola's illustrations match the tone of the poem perfectly: old fashioned and charming. The setting is New England during the 1840s. Each illustration is rich with quaint details, and each page is bordered with patterns from old timey quilts. It's a beautiful book and a holiday favorite.

The Body of Property: Antebellum American Fiction and the Phenomenology of Possession (American Literatures Initiative), by Chad Luck

What does it mean to own something? How does a thing become mine? Liberal philosophy since John Locke has championed the salutary effects of private property but has avoided the more difficult questions of property's ontology. Chad Luck argues that antebellum American literature is obsessed with precisely these questions.

Reading slave narratives, gothic romances, city-mystery novels, and a range of other property narratives, Luck unearths a wide-ranging literary effort to understand the nature of ownership, the phenomenology of possession. In these antebellum texts, ownership is not an abstract legal form but a lived relation, a dynamic of embodiment emerging within specific cultural spaces a disputed frontier, a city agitated by class conflict.

Luck challenges accounts that map property practice along a trajectory of abstraction and "virtualization." The book also reorients recent Americanist work in emotion and affect by detailing a broader phenomenology of ownership, one extending beyond emotion to such sensory experiences as touch, taste, and vision. This productive blend of phenomenology and history uncovers deep-seated anxieties and enthusiasms about property across antebellum culture.

Review

"Written with force and grace, The Body of Property shows how antebellum literature stepped in to address questions that legal thought largely evaded: how do we come to own a thing? Why does property require bodies? Offering us a 'phenomenology of possession' in authors ranging from Brown to Stoddard, from J. P. Kennedy to George Lippard, Chad Luck provides a genuinely new account of the cultural work undertaken by antebellum fiction, as it thinks through embodiment and possession in a range of social locations: frontier, parlor, plantation, cityscape. This is a terrific book, well-researched, theoretically nimble, and full of interpretive insight."--Jonathan Elmer, Indiana University

"Luck's focus on the phenomenological experience of ownership in the early nineteenth century is new and revealing. Whether looking at the frontier romance, the urban gothic, the domestic novel, or the plantation narrative, Luck convincingly shows how changing notions of property were intimately linked to evolving notions of embodiment and selfhood."--David Anthony, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

"Luck combines a truly impressive archive of antebellum writing, legal and cultural history, Enlightenment philosophy, and phenomenology with an innovative methodology to tell a new history of property in American literature and culture--the history of what property feels like, from the body to the spaces of the home, the plantation, and the city."--Jennifer Greiman, University at Albany, SUNY

Worthwhile Places: Correspondence of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Horace Albright, by J.W. Ernst

Worthwhile Places is a fascinating inside look at the history of some of our most treasured national parks. The book illuminates a remarkable public-private partnership that helped to shape our national park system. The close association and warm and lasting friendship between John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Horace M. Albright is documented through 211 letters covering a 36-year period. The letters portray a common concern for and love of our nation's natural heritage and efforts which preserved countless scenic wonders for future generations. Horace Albright joined the National Park Service at its inception in 1916. He was superintendent of Yellowstone National Park and later director of the National Park Service. After he left government service, he remained active in the conservation movement until his death in 1987. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., a generous supporter of the national park system and other conservation and preservation activities, was one of the earliest proponents of private sector cooperation with the national government's preservation efforts. The letters provide insights into the plannings and problem solving which led to the creation of Acadia, Grand Teton, Grand Smoky Mountains, and Virgin Islands national parks as well as other conservation/preservation efforts for the California Big Trees, Florida's Bald Cypress Swamp, and Colonial Williamsburg. Dr. Joseph Ernst's Overview and Elilogue place the letters in their historical perspective and provide glimpses into the lives of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Horace M. Albright. This selection of letters highlights the sweep of their vision for America's outdoors, which literally stretched from coast to coast.

A Basic Read
By David Jans
I read this book thinking I would walk away with the know how to start my own label as the title suggests, but that wasn't the case at all. The author explains some of the basics behind the business based on her own experience, but doesn't get into the details behind the A - B start up. I would recommend this book to someone interested in running a record label. It will help kick-start an interest and promote new ideas you wouldn't normally think of. She covers different types of deals and suggestions on running a business, however, I would move to a more informative book if you are truly serious.

ok if you are a beginner
By Howard Jones
I think this one is ok if you are a beginner, but feel that most people with experience will find it a little boring. If you have no idea about the music business, I think this is a bargain for (). However, if you're out there playing in clubs and looking for something a little more focused on helping you make that happen. I really like "How I Make $100,000 in Music" by David Hooper to help you with understanding how music business people think, the Indie Bible by David Wimble to help you with contacts, and the Jeri Goldstein book about booking to put it all together.

Definitely worth the money!
By A Customer
I've been in the industry for a few years now, have my own label, and I still loved this book! I bought it out of curiosity and couldn't put it down! She really knows what she is talking about, as it comes from her own personal experience of owning and operating a label from start-up. I really reccomend this book to anyone who is even thinking about starting a record company, or anyone who is fairly new at it (less than 5 years). Great job Daylle!!

Fordham: A History and Memoir, Revised Edition, by S.J. Raymond A. Schroth

Fordham University is the quintessential American-Catholic institution-and one now looked upon as among the best Catholic universities in the country. Its story is also the story of New York, especially the Bronx, and Fordham's commitment to the city during its rise, fall, and rebirth. It's a story of Jesuits, soldiers, alumni who fought in World Wars, chaplains, teachers, and administrators who made bold moves and big mistakes, ofpresidents who thought small and those who had vision. And of the first women, students and faculty, who helped bring Fordham into the 20th century. Finally it's the story of an institution's attempt to keep its Jesuitand Catholic identity as it strives for leadership in a competitive world. Combining authoritative history and fascinating anecdotes, Schroth offers an engaging account of Fordham's one hundred thirrty-seven years-here, updated, revised, and expanded to cover the new presidency of Joseph M. McShane, S.J., and the challenges Fordham faces in the new century.

Review
"A colorful tapestry that informs, delights, and compels admiration for the author and for Fordham itself."

About the Author

Raymond A. Schroth, S.J., is editor of Conversations, the magazine for American Jesuit colleges and universities. His own path crossed with Drinan's at several junctures, making his an ideal voice for investigating both the circumstances that made Drinan an important figure in American politics and his role as Jesuit priest within the Catholic Church. Schroth, previously Professor of Humanities at St. Peter's College, has been affiliated with five Jesuit colleges and universities; is the author of eight other books, including Fordham: A History and Memoir, Revised Edition (Fordham); and has been an editor and columnist for America, Commonweal, and The National Catholic Reporter.

The School and the City
By S. Mahon
Father Ray Schroth has captured not only the history of Fordham, but the spirit of New York City during a very trying time in the 60s and 70s. As a Fordham student from 1976-80, I can say he has captured the school, the Bronx and the era with a high degree of literary grace. Very readable, pick any page and you will come away with one or more vignette of the world's most interesting city and the University that is woven into its fabric.

A Coat of Many Colors: Immigration, Globalization, and Reform in New York City's Garment IndustryFrom Brand: Fordham University Press

For more than a century and a half-from the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 20th-the garment industry was the largest manufacturing industry in New York City, and New York made more clothes than anywhere else. For generations, the industry employed more New Yorkers than any other and was central to the city's history, culture, and identity. Today, although no longer the big heart of industrial New York, the needle trades are still an important part of the city's economy-especially for the new waves of immigrants who cut, sew, and assemble clothing in shops around the five boroughs. In this valuable book, historians, sociologists, and economists explore the rise and fall of the garment industry and its impact on New York and its people, as part of a global process of economic change. Essays trace the rise of the industry, from the creation of a Manhattan garment district employing immigrants from nearby enements to the contemporary spread of Chinese-owned shops in cheaper neighborhoods. The tumultuoushistory of workers and their bosses is the focus of chapters on contractors and labor militants and on the experiences of Italian, Chinese, Jewish, Dominican, and other ethnic workers. The final chapter looks at air labor, social responsibility, and the political economy of the offshore garment industry.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4 Good storytelling and an attention to historical background make this book superior to the usual biographical fare for this age group. Adler breathes life into the complex character of Washington and uses simple quotes from diaries and letters. It is refreshing to see that facts concerning smallpox, slavery, and war are not whitewashed or ignored. Instead they are dealt with directly and without condescension. Although it is impossible for a book of this scope to give a complete synopsis of the historical setting, young readers not familiar with American history may be confused to see Washington begin his military career as a British soldier. The situation with the colonies is not explained until later in the book. This is a quibble, however, for the text is accurate and interesting. Unfortunately the illustrationslackluster black-and-white sketchesdo little to invite readers or enhance the book. Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, Tex.

From Publishers Weekly
The major strength of this accessible biography of the great stage and film dancer, choreographer, actor and director is Yudkoff's detailed treatment of Kelly's early years and his struggle to achieve professional success, although Kelly's later years devolve into something of a muddle. Kelly's mother enrolled her five children in dancing school and enjoined them to use their talent to supplement the blue-collar Irish Catholic family's income. Young Gene (1912-1996) complied by teaching children to dance at the local synagogue in Pittsburgh, before working his way through college by dancing in clubs. Later, he jettisoned law school to establish a family business, the Gene Kelly Studio of Dance. Kelly's big break came with the title role in the 1940 musical Pal Joey; he caught the eye of David O. Selznick, who brought him to Hollywood and gave him a part in For Me and My Gal (1942) with Judy Garland. Yudkoff vividly re-creates the famous Hollywood parties that Kelly and his first wife, Betsy Blair, hosted, featuring cutthroat charades and all night political discussions. His treatment of Kelly's personal life is less compelling, however: too much of it is based on speculation. Yudkoff touches on Kelly's left-wing politics during the red scare, but never really explains why Kelly was able to continue working while Blair was blacklisted. Unfortunately, he compresses into one chapter the last 45 years of Kelly's life, in which he remarried twice after a divorce from Blair, raised two children and undertook many creative projects. From Library Journal
Gene Kelly fans will relish this absorbing biography. Yudkoff (a writer and film producer) deftly narrates Kelly's journey from Pittsburgh to Broadway to Hollywood, sensitively telling behind-the-scenes stories and relating the details of Kelly's personal life--from his troubled first marriage, to the highly competitive game parties he held at his house, to his experiences during the McCarthy era. But it is the enormously fascinating material Yudkoff discovered about Kelly's early life that's most impressive. It was, we learn, the determination and intense work ethic he got from his mother as a child that carried him far from poverty in Pittsburgh. He and his siblings spent their youth performing at an impossible number of gigs to fulfill their mother's dreams and, later, to help make ends meet during the Depression. This is the real heart of the story--one of guts and triumph--that sets the stage for Kelly's creative achievements and lasting fame. A well-researched, honest, and respectful work, this is essential for fans and students of film history.

Shamefully shoddy......
By CroonerDude
I have my own personal barometer to indicate whether or not a book is second-rate (or worse). I start counting the typos, and when I hit "five," I officially distrust the author/editors. I hit five by the third chapter and knew I was in for a bumpy ride. This author should have concentrated on spell-checking and fact-checking, rather than obsessing with his thinly veiled, homophobic assertions (as mentioned by another reader, his repeated reference to "Leo McCrary" nearly made me hurl the book across the room!). This really was a maddening read, and it is hardly the biography that the great Gene Kelly deserves. Makes one even sadder to ponder that Kelly's own autobiography was lost when his house burned down in the 80's. That would have been a helluva read.

A mixed bag
By A Customer
I don't know why I'm writing a review since I agree with most everybody's comments, but perhaps I can help you decide if this book is for you. First off, this book is both good and bad. Good because it is the first book to be written about Gene Kelly in quite a while, but bad because the author uses techniques and makes little mistakes that weaken his work. Many readers complain that Yudkoff pretends to know what Gene was thinking during certain points. Indeed, Yudkoff does use a technique that makes the book more of a novel than a strict biography. For instance, he doesn't use the "In 1940, this happened. Later that same year, this happened. In early 1941 he did this." Yudkoff creates conversations that he has no knowledge of actually occuring but I believe he did this to make the biography more readable and enjoyable. Some parts I disagreed with, but I can see why he uses this approach. One thing that hurts Yudkoff's work is his fact checking. For instance, Gene Kelly was quoted as saying that Fred Astaire retired after his wife's death. This was not true, Astaire retired years before his wife passed away. What is true is that Gene Kelly was wrong when he said this. However, if the author had done any research and doublechecked sources, he could have added a note something like "although Gene said this, it was not true that Fred retired because of his wife's death" or something along those lines. Its not a major mistake but I think it shows that Yudkoff may not have researched his topic thoroughly. In another instance, Yudkoff states that Frank Sinatra, a friend and costar of Gene's, almost intentionally angered studio head Louis B. Mayer so he would be fired and able to make "From Here To Eternity". The truth is that Sinatra was fired and didn't make "Eternity" until a year or two later, the film hadn't even been mentioned at the time he was released from MGM. I'm sure that Gene Kelly knew this and its another example of the author not knowing his subject well enough. Good biographers are able to tell you about the lives of people close to their subject, as both Fred Astaire and Frank Sinatra were to Gene Kelly. Like I said, the fact that Yudkoff doesn't know these things shows a lack of research. Yudkoff also doesn't provide notes, which I always appreciate in a biography. It lets the reader know what sources were checked, who said what, etc. For instance, if unsure about a quote you can check the notes and see if it came from a close friend, acquaintance, or a different biographer. The good side, as mentioned earlier, is that this is the first biography of legendary song and dance man Gene Kelly to come out in a long time. Kelly's life is interesting not only for films but also for his time in history. He was a committed liberal and during the times of McCarthy this could prove a liability. Though this was an interesting period, it was only one part of Kelly's life. Unfortunately, Yudkoff barely talks about his later life. There is not even a mention of Gene's third child being born. I would have appreciated more detail on Kelly's very happy second marriage, but Yudkoff barely gives any.
In conclusion, this biography does leave a lot to be desired. It is by no means a definitive book. However, its a decent introduction to Kelly and is the most commercially available bio on him. I recommend that you read it with an open mind, try to corroborate with other books, and if you can find Clive Hirschhorn's excellent biography of Gene Kelly. Its hard to find, but its more fulfilling and accurate than this.

Nothing New on Kelly Here
By Nora L. Mayers
The author tries, but fails, to adequately tell Gene Kelly's life story. There are so few materials on the life and career of Kelly that this book was eagerly anticipated by his fans. Unfortnately, this one doesn't make the grade. In his "novel" approach, the author attempts to crawl inside Kelly's mind as he sits watching the American Film Institute Awards in the 1980s. He thinks Kelly's thoughts and presents them to readers, as though he inhabits a secret corner of the choreographer/dancer's mind and is literally giving us "the inside scoop" on how Kelly felt about his life, career, and relationships. He also invites himself into closed door sessions (where he couldn't possibly have known what was being said between Kelly and Mayer, Kelly and Betsy Blair, Kelly and Jeanne Coyne, Kelly and Donen, etc.). The result is half novel/half biography, all failure. When the author finally does climb out of Kelly's mind back into the reality of the dancer's life, he doesn't get all of his facts straight. In one instance he reports that Vera Ellen saluted Kelly at the American Film Institute Awards. If so, she did it from the netherworld. Ellen had been dead for several years by the time of the AFI awards.
For some odd reason writers have a hard time writing about Kelly and doing it well. Perhaps it is because Kelly's life is devoid of serious scandel; there is nothing scurrilous on which to hang juicy rumors. Let's hope, then, that Kelly's widow, Pat Ward, will soon release the biography that Kelly, himself, was working on the last few years of his life. Then we'll REALLY know what Kelly was thinking, and not have to rely upon second-hand Kelly-think.

Questioning the Human: Toward a Theological Anthropology for the Twenty-First CenturyFrom Fordham University Press

Theological anthropology is being put to the test: in the face of contemporary developments in the spheres of culture, politics, and science, traditional perspectives on the human person are no longer adequate. Yet can theological anthropology move beyond its previously established categories and renew itself in relation to contemporary insights? The present collection of essays sets out to answer this question. Uniting Roman Catholic theologians from across the globe, it tackles from a theological perspective challenges related to the classical natural law tradition (part 1), to the modern conception of the subject (part 2), and to the postmodern awareness of diversity in a globalizing context (part 3). Its contributors share a fundamental methodological choice of a critical-constructive dialogue with contemporary culture, science, and philosophy.

This collection integrates a wider range of approaches than one usually finds in theological volumes, bringing together experts in systematic theology and in theological ethics. Authors come from different American contexts, including Black and Latino, and from a European context that include both French and German. Moreover, the interdisciplinary insights upon which the different contributions draw stem from both the natural sciences (such as neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and ethology) and the humanities (such as cultural studies, philosophy, and hermeneutics).

This volume will be essential reading for anyone seeking a state-of-the-art account of theological anthropology, of the uncertainties it is facing, and of the responses it is in the process of formulating. The shared Roman Catholic background of the authors of this collection makes this volume a helpful complement to recent publications that predominantly represent views from other theological traditions.

Review
Theological anthropology, the project of articulating what it is and what it means to be human in relation to the transcendent God, stands at a crossroads in the second decade of the 21st century. Powerful forces shaping contemporary lifeGCoscience and technology, the workings of the global economy, re-configurations of social and political power, regionally, locally, and globallyGCoseem to render that project deeply problematic in terms of both its substance and its methods. The discourse of theological inquiry, moreover, has itself been pluralized, nor only in consequence of these encompassing cultural challenges, but also as a result of a renewed self-critical awareness of theologyGCOs own deep embedding in socio-cultural and historical particularity. The essays in this volume offer incisive diagnoses of these challenges and promising strategies to address them. They provide a solid basis for confidence in the continuing importance of a renewed theological anthropology for the living faith of the Catholic Church in its concrete engagements with the full range of the workings of the world.
