For Derrida, by J. Hillis Miller

This book-the culmination of forty years of friendship between J. Hillis Miller and Jacques Derrida, during which Miller also closely followed all Derrida's writings and seminars-is for Derridain two senses. It is for him, dedicated to his memory. The chapters also speak, in acts of reading, as advocates for Derrida's work. They focus especially on Derrida's late work, including passages from the last, as yet unpublished, seminars. The chapters are partial to Derrida,on his side, taking his part, gratefully submitting themselves to the demand made by Derrida's writings to be read-slowly, carefully, faithfully, with close attention to semantic detail. The chapters do not progress forward to tell a sequential story. They are, rather, a series of perspectives on the heterogeneity of Derrida's work, or forays into that heterogeneity. The chief goal has been, to borrow a phrase from Wallace Stevens, plainly to propoundwhat Derrida says. The book aims, above all, to render Derrida's writings justice. It should be remembered, however, that, according to Derrida himself, every rendering of justice is also a transformative interpretation. A book like this one is not a substitute for reading Derrida for oneself. It is to be hoped that it will encourage readers to do just that.

The Pain of Reformation: Spenser, Vulnerability, and the Ethics of Masculinity, by Joseph Campana

The Pain of Reformation argues that Edmund Spenser's 1590 Faerie Queene represents an extended meditation on emerging notions of physical, social, and affective vulnerability in Renaissance England. Histories of violence, trauma, and injury have dominated literary studies, often obscuring vulnerability, or an openness to sensation, affect, and aesthetics that includes a wide range of pleasures and pains. This book approaches early modern sensations through the rubric of the vulnerable body, explores the emergence of notions of shared vulnerability, and illuminates a larger constellation of masculinity and ethics in post-Reformation England.

Spenser's era grappled with England's precarious political position in a world tense with religious strife and fundamentally transformed by the doctrinal and cultural sea changes of the Reformation, which had serious implications for how masculinity, affect, and corporeality would be experienced and represented. Intimations of vulnerability often collided with the tropes of heroic poetry, producing a combination of defensiveness, anxiety, and shame. It has been easy to identify predictably violent formations of early modern masculinity but more difficult to see Renaissance literature as an exploration of vulnerability.

The underside of representations of violence in Spenser's poetry was a contemplation of the precarious lives of subjects in post-Reformation England. Spenser's adoption of the allegory of Venus disarming Mars, understood in Renaissance Europe as an allegory of peace, indicates that The Faerie Queene is a heroic poem that militates against forms of violence and war that threatened to engulf Europe and devastate an England eager to militarize in response to perceived threats from within and without. In pursuing an analysis, disarmament, and redefinition of masculinity in response to a sense of shared vulnerability, Spenser's poem reveals itself to be a vital archive of the way gender, violence, pleasure, and pain were understood.

On the Commerce of Thinking: Of Books and Bookstores, by Jean-Luc Nancy

Jean-Luc Nancy's On the Commerce of Thinking concerns the particular communication of thoughts that takes place by means of the business of writing, producing, and selling books. His reflection is born out of his relation to the bookstore, in the first place his neighborhood one, but beyond that any such perfumery, rotisserie, patisserie,as he calls them, dispensaries of scents and flavors through which something like a fragrance or bouquet of the book is divined, presumed, sensed. On the Commerce of Thinking is thus not only something of a semiology of the specific cultural practice that begins with the unique character of the writer's voice and culminates in a customer crossing the bookstore threshold, package under arm, on the way home to a comfortable chair, but also an understated yet persuasive plea in favor of an endangered species. In evoking the peddler who, in times past, plied the streets with books and pamphlets literally hanging off him, Nancy emphasizes the sensuality of this commerce and reminds us that this form of consumerism is like no other, one that ends in an experience-reading-that is the beginning of a limitless dispersion, metamorphosis, and dissemination of ideas. Making, selling, and buying books has all the elements of the exchange economy that Marx analyzed--from commodification to fetishism--yet each book retains throughout an absolute and unique value, that of its subject. With reading, it gets repeatedly reprinted and rebound. For Nancy, the book thus functions only if it remains at the same time open and shut, like some Moebius strip. Closed, it represents the Idea and takes its place in a canon by means of its monumental form and the title and author's name displayed on its spine. But it also opens itself to us, indeed consents to being shaken to its core, in being read each time anew.

Review

Opening this little 'Aleph' of a book is a most extraordinary adventure; the universe and how we know it unfolds in startling profundity. I thought I knew what a book was until I read this, but Nancy has set me off again in search of the million things a book can be.-Lewis Buzbee

More than an loge to books and bookstores, or to the book or the bookstore, Jean-Luc Nancy's evocative essay reminds us of the crucial link between reading and politics that keeps open the possibility of enlightenment. Nancy touches suggestively on the book as what Stphane Mallarm called 'a spiritual instrument,' illuminating the epochal philosophical and religious developments for which books have been the indispensable material support. Nancy's book contains the philosophical weight and literary flair that has made him one of the most important thinkers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. As David Wills helpfully points out in the preface to his excellent translation, Nancy's thoughts on books and bookstores extend his reflection on the possibility of the truly singular plurality of community.-Kevin McLaughlin

Delights the mind with its turns of phrase, its creative reinterpretations of ordinary concepts, and its remarkable rigor.-Sander van Maas

au contraire

O cantankerous, for the other review. This is a charming and provocative little essay on what it is that is a book, its impact on thinking and what commerce might mean to it. It is a bit ahead of its time as it pre-dates ereaders, but, alas for my colleague, it was never meant to be about a bookstore or the mundane elemants of merchandising. Not to worry, dear fellow, surely Walmart will come up with an e-reader for you.

Outstanding
By Andrew Martino
This is an outstanding smaller work by one of the leading theorists today. Although more of an extended essay than a book, Nancy's exploration into the world of books and bookstores will resonate with anyone who visits bookstores, especially used ones, on a regular basis. I disagree with the reviewer who states that this is unreadable; this is one of Nancy's most readable works. The subject matter is quite relevant today given the state of bookstores in the digital world. Nancy is most thought-provoking when he takes us down a path we hadn't noticed before. This is one of those paths. This is a book that demands to be re-read multiple times, and the fact that the reader can finish it in an hour or so only enhances his or her reading experience here.

Very disappointing
By Amazon Customer
Indecipherable. If you can wade through French critical theory texts, then *maybe* you will appreciate this book. It has little to say, however, about the actual mechanisms of bookselling and bookstores, or about, as the title promises, the "commerce of thinking." It is written in the most convoluted language imaginable, not helped by what is surely a poor translation from the French. A big disappointment.

Freud and the Scene of Trauma, by John Fletcher

This book argues that Freud's mapping of trauma as a scene is central to both his clinical interpretation of his patients' symptoms and his construction of successive theoretical models and concepts to explain the power of such scenes in his patients' lives. This attention to the scenic form of trauma and its power in determining symptoms leads to Freud's break from the neurological model of trauma he inherited from Charcot. It also helps to explain the affinity that Freud and many since him have felt between psychoanalysis and literature (and artistic production more generally), and the privileged role of literature at certain turning points in the development of his thought. It is Freud's scenography of trauma and fantasy that speaks to the student of literature and painting.

Overall, the book develops the thesis of Jean Laplanche that in Freud's shift from a traumatic to a developmental model, along with the undoubted gains embodied in the theory of infantile sexuality, there were crucial losses: specifically, the recognition of the role of the adult other and the traumatic encounter with adult sexuality that is entailed in the ordinary nurture and formation of the infantile subject.

Review

"There can be no doubt that this book will reward scholars across a number of disciplines: literary studies, trauma studies, psychoanalysis and psychology, and philosophy"--Choice Magazine

"Fletcher offers a distinctly original reformulation of a psychoanalytic account of fantasy and memory, focusing on its belated and non-mimetic dimensions. This account has far-reaching consequences for the status and ethical value of psychoanalysis within contemporary intellectual life. . . . The chapters of this book are distinguished not only by their enormous theoretical power and precision, but by Fletcher's nearly uncanny ability to read both literary and theoretical texts with great powers of illumination and nuance. It is rare to find someone who combines his capacity for sustained and lucid abstract discussion with such a fine capacity for close textual reading."--Judith Butler

"This book is a gem. It is written on a number of levels: Freud's scholarship, literary scholarship, psychoanalytic scholarship, and psychology. It has depth and subtlety at the same time as providing a good read for a wide range of audiences. I recommend it wholeheartedly to students at all levels of seniority, including the most serious of scholars."--Peter Fonagy

A Front-Row Guide to Broadway
By Robert S
If you are planning a trip to New York City and would like to see a Broadway show but are looking for the best way to pick a show and obtain discounted tickets to overpriced productions, I can't think of a more helpful guide to the process than The Back Stage Guide to Broadway, by Robert Viagas.

Even for the native New Yorker and longtime theatregoer, there is much useful information in this practical primer, which also includes tidbits of Broadway lore and New York trivia as well as tips for the tourist eating in, staying in and getting around Manhattan's theatre district -- a black-and-white foldout map of which is in the back of the book.

If the undue policing isn't too much of a drag on the theatre experience, the prospective visitor to the Times Square area looking to save time and money can only hope that, despite some factual, grammatical and typographical errors, this handy pocket guide will be around and revised for years to come.

The Essential Guide To Broadway
By Robert S. Robbins
Although this book is a little out-of-date, especially the restaurant section, it is still the only decent guide to Broadway and New York theaters I've found. I especially like the fact that it includes plenty of information for the tourist who may be unfamiliar with New York City. There are a few details that could have been more precise. For example, if you are looking for the Eugene ONeill birthplace plaque, it is located on the outside wall of a Starbucks at 1500 Broadway.

Although Broadway and Times Square seems like a small area that is easy to get to know, there are actually many interesting establishments hidden on side streets and obscured by giant billboards. I just wish there was a comprehensive guide to New York City theaters because there are many Off Broadway theaters that are hard to find.

By Midwest Book Review
The Back Stage Guide To Broadway is a no-nonsense guide packed with basic etiquette considerations, questions-and- answers, and general advice specifically for New York City theatre-goers, whether they are residents or tourists. From when and how much to tip, how to dress for the theatre and what to expect when there, famous and important personages to be aware of, how to get a refund if one's trip is cancelled, reviews of more than 60 theatre-related restaurants and 20 hotels close to theatres, and much more, The Back Stage Guide To Broadway has everything a theatre patron needs to know. A highly specialized travel guide that is nonetheless outstanding and a "must-read" for first-time Broadway visitors.

Reading the Allegorical Intertext: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, by Judith H. Anderson

Judith H. Anderson conceives the intertext as a relation between or among texts that encompasses both Kristevan intertextuality and traditional relationships of influence, imitation, allusion, and citation. Like the Internet, the intertext is a state, or place, of potential expressed in ways ranging from deliberate emulation to linguistic free play. Relatedly, the intertext is also a convenient fiction that enables examination of individual agency and sociocultural determinism. Anderson's intertext is allegorical because Spenser's Faerie Queene is pivotal to her study and because allegory, understood as continued or moving metaphor, encapsulates, even as it magnifies, the process of signification. Her title signals the variousness of an intertext extending from Chaucer through Shakespeare to Milton and the breadth of allegory itself. Literary allegory, in Anderson's view, is at once a mimetic form and a psychic one-a process thinking that combines mind with matter, emblem with narrative, abstraction with history. Anderson's first section focuses on relations between Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Spenser's The Faerie Queene, including the role of the narrator, the nature of the textual source, the dynamics of influence, and the bearing of allegorical narrative on lyric vision. The second centers on agency and cultural influence in a variety of Spenserian and medieval texts. Allegorical form, a recurrent concern throughout, becomes the pressing issue of section three. This section treats plays and poems of Shakespeare and Milton and includes two intertextually relevant essays on Spenser. How Paradise Lost or Shakespeare's plays participate in allegorical form is controversial. Spenser's experiments with allegory revise its form, and this intervention is largely what Shakespeare and Milton find in his poetry and develop. Anderson's book, the result of decades of teaching and writing about allegory, especially Spenserian allegory, will reorient thinking about fundamental critical issues and the landmark texts in which they play themselves out.

Review

Reading the Allegorical Intertext gives rich attention to its four authors-Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton-although Spenser, who plays a major part in seventeen of the nineteen chapters, remains at the heart of the book.

A collection of essays written over a distinguished critic's career. . .

...an impressive collection of seventeen of Judith Anderson's previously published articles...-Melanie Ord

With a history that stretches back to the hauntingly beautiful mummy portraits of Greco-Roman Egypt, encaustic art is now enjoying a renewal of popularity among artists and art lovers alike. Today, museums are staging exhibitions of encaustic art, workshops in the technique are thriving, and art collectors and dealers are assimilating encaustic art into their collections and galleries.

The word encaustic is taken from the Greek and means “to burn in.” In the encaustic process, pigmented wax is applied and then fused to a surface with heat. The result is a broad range of surface effects and a luminous translucency that is unique to the encaustic medium. Encaustic Art is a complete resource for artists who wish to learn to create fine art with wax. It features step-by-step techniques with easy-to-understand instructions and detailed illustrations, stunning examples of encaustic works of art (including sculpture), along with practical advice and thoughtful aesthetic observations from more than 60 professional artists working in the encaustic medium.

My favorite Encaustic Book
By SUMMER
A 5 star plus. Although the other encaustic books I've read have also been wonderful, none compare to the information found in Encautic Art by Lissa Rankin. Because I spent my $$$ on paint and supplies instead of the $600. plus travel costs to take a good encaustic class, I had to become very informed before starting. (I wouldn't recommend this unless you are the kind that knows you can pull it off.) I still had many questions that remained unanswered until I read Encaustic Art. It's beneficial to have an array of encaustic books and info., but this will be the book you will go back to review the most.
It's been hard holding off the inspirations with having to learn a new medium but after much study I feel secure and excited to begin to paint; my first project being on 30" x 30" encausticbord. My industrial fan is being installed in my art room and the electrical checked to make sure it can handle the output of all the heating appliances; fire extingusher in place. A word on safety: I had my own stained glass business for 18 years and cannot stress the importance of re-reading the safety section of this book. I got a lot of toxins from my last job so always remember nothing is more important than your health. Thank you Lissa for sharing your encaustic knowledge. I appreciate your hard work. You have put together an excellent book!

Great book!
By Dianne Erickson
This book has it all, beautiful photos, great basic information, and the usual encaustic techniques but it goes much further. Using wax for sculpture, printmaking and much more. The quality of the book is really good too, nice paper and lots of great color photos. If you want to learn the basics, or expand your work in wax, I totally recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.

Fantastic Encaustic Book
By C. Klich
This book is for the beginner as well as the professional encaustic artist. It offers so many ideas and great photos. Many techniques are covered along with a wealth of ideas that I haven't even thought of yet. I am a professional artist and instructor and will definitely recommend this book to my students. There are gallery shots as well as close-up details photos and artists working in their studio. I would love to see a companion book to this one that goes into even more detail on the techniques. Great work Lissa!

Kierkegaard and the Staging of Desire: Rhetoric and Performance in a Theology of Eros, by Carl S. Hughes

Theology in the modern era often assumes that the consummate form of theological discourse is objective prose--ignoring or condemning apophatic traditions and the spiritual eros that drives them. For too long, Kierkegaard has been read along these lines as a progenitor of twentieth-century neo-orthodoxy and a stern critic of the erotic in all its forms. In contrast, Hughes argues that Kierkegaard envisions faith fundamentally as a form of infinite, insatiable eros. He depicts the essential purpose of Kierkegaard's writing as to elicit ever-greater spiritual desire, not to provide the satisfactions of doctrine or knowledge.

Hughes's argument revolves around close readings of provocative, disparate, and (in many cases) little-known Kierkegaardian texts. The thread connecting all of these texts is that they each conjure up some sort of performative "stage setting," which they invite readers to enter. By analyzing the theological function of these texts, the book sheds new light on the role of the aesthetic in Kierkegaard's authorship, his surprising affinity for liturgy and sacrament, and his overarching effort to conjoin eros for God with this-worldly love.

Review

"Hughes' attention to historical details is impressive. Few scholars have recognized the importance of vaudeville and farce for Kierkegaard, and few have researched the Danish appropriation of these French and German genres in the way that Hughes has done."-Lee C. Barrett, Lancaster Theological Seminary

"This suggestive and insightful book argues that Kierkegaard's authorship can fruitfully be read as 'stagings of Christian desire,' elaborating both the connection between the notion of infinite desire and the notion of theatricality in Kierkegaard's work and the connection between the notion of infinite desire and 'theology.' The author explores the relation between aesthetics (the art, the ritual, the liturgy) and the architecture of the church in Kierkegaard's Communion discourses, but suggests that the theatrical qualities and the relation to infinite desire inform the whole authorship. The book, moreover, has ramifications for more than Christian theology because it reveals a broader notion of what theology can be (as exploration of unsatisfied desire for what can never be represented)."-M. Jamie Ferreira, University of Virginia

"The curtain rises-again and again-in Kierkegaard's writing. Helped by Carl Hughes, readers can now become viewers. They will recognize the overlooked stagecraft; they will appreciate the nuanced performances. Teaching us to read by watching, Hughes is as astute, as witty, as passionate as any great critic. Still his higher art, like Kierkegaard's own, it to show how fully this dramaturgy is theology. The drama here is always an invitation to redemption. "--Mark D. Jordan, Harvard University

Miracle on High Street: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., by Thomas A. McCabe

Just outside downtown Newark, New Jersey, sits an abbey and school. For more than 150 years Benedictine monks have lived, worked, and prayed on High Street, a once-grand thoroughfare that became Newark's Skid Row and a focal point of the 1967 riots.St. Benedict's today has become a model of a successful inner-city school, with 95 percent of its graduates-mainly African American and Latino boys-going on to college. Miracle on High Street is the story of how the monks of St. Benedict's transformed their venerable yet outdated school to become a thriving part of the community that helped save a faltering city.In the 1960s, after a trinity of woes-massive deindustrialization, high-speed suburbanization, and racial violence-caused an exodus from Newark, St. Benedict's struggled to remain open. Enrollment in general dwindled, and fewer students enrolled from the surrounding community. The monks watched the violence of the 1967 riots from the school's rooftop along High Street. In the riot's aftermath more families fled what some called the worst city in America. The school closed in 1972, in what seemed to be just another funeral for an urban Catholic school. A few monks, inspired by the Benedictine virtues of stability and adaptability, reopened St. Benedict's only one year later with a bare-bones staff . Their new mission was to bring to young African American and Latino males the same opportunities that German and Irish immigrants had had 150 years before.More than thirty years later, St. Benedict's is one of the most unusual schools in the country. Its remarkable success shows that American education can bridge the achievement gap between white and black, as well as that between rich and poor. The story of St. Benedict's is about an institution's rise and fall, resurrection andrenaissance. It also provides valuable insights into American religious, immigration, educational, and metropolitan history. By staying true to their historical values amid a continually changing city, the downtown monks, in resurrecting its prep school, helped save an American city. Some have even called it the miracle on High Street.

Review

"This wondrous story of faith in the power of education, spiritual tenacity in an old American city, and redemption for generations of hardscrabble boys along Newark's High Street is important and timely. Tom McCabe's Miracle. captures the complicated history of the Benedictines on old American ground, shedding a brilliant light on why they have mattered, and still do, to the survival of inner city parochial education in the United States. It also persuasively argues that the decision, in retrospect an extraordinary one, to reopen the school was yet another symbol of Newark's Renaissance and the Benedictine challenge to racism. A triumph!" - Clement Alexander Price

"A dramatic, riveting account of a school and a city that rose and fell together, and the community of monks who dared to wed hopes for a revived St. Benedict's with Newark's precarious dreams of rebirth. Thomas A. McCabe is a gifted historian; he has crafted this highly lucid narrative with an insider's passion and a scholar's balance and grace." - James T. Fisher

"The inner-city school's remarkable revival shows that American education can bridge achievement gaps between white and black as well as rich and poor." - Publishers Weekly

"The captivating true story of a Catholic prep school that helped turn around a community falling prey to urban blight."--Midwest Book Review

"McCabe's lively history of St. Benedict's Miracle on High Street, may be a local story, but it's also a microcosm of the ebb and flow of the Catholic presence in many American cities."-Teresa Malcom, National Catholic Reporter

Superb and highly recommended!
By Richard de Triquet
Thomas McCabe's Miracle on High Street, tracing the history of Newark's Saint Benedict's Prep, is a truly superb and carefully researched historical work. Eloquent and genuinely heartfelt, McCabe's solid scholarship, nevertheless, ensures that his portrait is carefully presented in the context of shifting historical currents be they social, political or demographic. The essence of Saint Benedict's through the years, the character building and the sense of community that was and remains its core function, is superbly captured. The profiles of the Benedictine monks, the visionary leaders, the teachers and the athletic coaches are likewise noteworthy. McCabe's depiction of Newark's rapid decline leading to the school's eventual closure in 1972 made me revisit not only all of the deep sadness I felt as a freshman that year but also pride in having had the Bendict's "experience", albeit abbreviated. Finally, McCabe's depiction of Benedict's rebirth, true to its Benedictine values, is captivating and rightly credits the inspired leadership, organizational skill and relentless energy of a handful of remaining monks and the corporate benefactors and alumni leveraged in support.

Miracle on High Street is a seminal work that provides insight into an important Catholic educational institution that has over the years quietly and effectively taught and mentored generations of young men. It should be of keen interest not only to alumni and friends of Saint Benedict's, but also to those interested in American urban history, Catholic education in America and the history of Newark. Highly recommended!

Invaluable lessons for turning around the difficult problems of inner city decay
By Midwest Book Review
Miracle on High Street: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J. is the captivating true story of a Catholic prep school that helped turn around a community falling prey to urban blight. In the 1960s, deindustrialization, suburbanization, and racial violence caused an exodus from Newark. Benedictine monks that lived, worked, and prayed on High Street observed its decay into Newark's notorious Skid Row. Enrollment in St. Benedict's Prep School declined, and it closed in 1972. But a few monks drew inspiration from the Benedictine values of stability and adaptability to reopen it one year later, determined to offer young African American and Latino males opportunities for education and a better future. Thirty years later, St. Benedict's is an outstanding success story and an inspirational model; 95 percent of its graduates go on to college. St Benedict's has even been termed the "Miracle on High Street", and its contributions to the community offer invaluable lessons for turning around the difficult problems of inner city decay. Highly recommended.

Great insight into Newark and the legacy of St. Benedict's
By Jessica Robinson
Tom McCabe's comprehensive history of St. Benedict's Prep School--one of the most successful urban schools in the nation--is not just an inspiring story, but also a primer on Newark's complicated past. The first chapter is a brillant and incredibly detailed description of an American, 19th-century, religious-inspired, ethnically-divided, urban riot. Protestants battled Catholics in one of America's largest cities. The outcome was the birth of one of the most successful Benedictine abbeys in the world. Anyone with an interest in urban education or the history of Newark will benefit greatly from McCabe's book.

aUtley argues that the path to war was laid in the years before 1940, when American foreign policy amanagersa could not see that their apparently moderate actions condemning Japanafrom verbal protests to amorala embargoesaessentially precluded accommodation with Tokyo. . . . The result was an almost classical tragedy . . .succinct and compelling.a
