From Publishers Weekly
Over the years, the legend of Saint Nicholas, a bishop who lived in Asia Minor over 1500 years ago, has evolved into an image of the white-bearded, red-suited Santa Claus. But Timmermans's original story, St. Nicholas in Nood , written in the first part of this century, told of a loving, generous bishop who cared deeply for his people. When Saint Nicholas and his assistant are delivering presents, they run out of gifts before they have given something to the child Cecile. Cecile, who overhears them discussing the dilemma, tells the bishop exactly what she wants and where they can get it: a beautiful chocolate ship, the "Congo," at the candy shop. But the miserly Trinchen Mutser, who owns the candy shop, doesn't believe the bishop is who he claims to be, and refuses to give him the costly ship. After they leave her store, Trinchen Mutser has a change of heart and gives Cecile the gift she so longs for. As in Babushka , Mikolaycak's dramatic old-world style illustrations have brought a historic tale vividly to life. The format of the book, that of an illustrated tale rather than a picture book, adds to the legendary quality of Kismaric's poetic adaptation and rekindles the true spirit of Christmas. Ages 4-8.

Suspicion and Faith: The Religious Uses of Modern Atheism, by Merold Westphal

Marx, Nietzche, and Freud are among the most influential of modern atheists. The distinctive feature of their challenge to theistic and specifically Christian belief is expressed by Paul Ricoeur when he calls them the masters of suspicion. While skepticism directs its critique to the truth or evidential basis of belief, suspicion asks two different, intimately intertwined questions: what are the motives that lead to this belief? and what function does it play, what work does it do for the individuals and communities that adopt it. What suspicion suspects is that the survival value of religious beliefs depends on satisfying desires and interests that the believing soul and the believing community are not eager to acknowledge because they violate the values they profess, as when, for example, talk about justice is a mask for deep-seated resentment and the desire for revenge. For this reason, the hermeneutics of suspicion is a theory, or group of theories, of self-deception: ideology critique in Marx, genealogy in Nietzsche, and psychoanalysis in Freud.Suspicion and Faith argues that the appropriate religious response (the religious uses of modern atheism) to these critiques is not to try to refute or deflect them, but rather to acknowledge their force in a process of self-examination--and this for two reasons. First, while these critiques are not, as Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud tend to suppose.

Excellent Book on Atheism's use of Religion
By D.P.
Merold Westphal is an excellent philosopher, and this book shows that. He does a terrific job to show that Singmund Freud's, Karl Marx's and Friedrich Nietzsche's critique of religion are all a very biblical critique.

Westphal rightly notes the failures of any forms of Positivism to critique religion, and although Freud was a thorough-going positivist, his critique or religion did not rest on those assumptions. His critique of religion was that it was a wish-fulfillment. And in many ways, we Christians do make God into what we "wish" for Him to be. He had the most chapters on Freud, because his thinking is very complex and he had to go over all the facets of his thought.

The section on Karl Marx was very good, too. Marx (and Nietzsche for that matter) rested their critique of religion on ideologies. Marx relied heavily on Feuerbach's critique of religion for his crituqe, although he said Feuerbach didn't go far enough. Marx critisized religion because of the so-called German state being "Christian". The state was being oppresive. What Christians need to realize is that the Gospel does have political consequences and that God does care for the poor, and Marx definitely shows this. He compared Marx to the prophet Amos.

The section on Nietzsche is very good, also. Nietzsche was a terrific Philosopher, even though I definitely do not agree with him on everything. He has many good things to say. He bascially said that we use religion to get revenge on others. That is often the case, too. He said that we used religion to use our own "will to power". He compared Nietzsche's critique to Jesus' critique of the pharisees.

This was a terrific book on describing how these men's critique of religion is much like the biblical critique of religion, and is a very powerful look at human nature.

A good prophetic witness via good old fashioned philosophy
By E. M. Dale
Back in 1992 I attended a lecture entitled "Nietzsche as Christian Philosopher." I was curious, and so went and heard a brilliant talk about the deep understanding Nietzsche had of the Christianity of his day, and why he found it necessary to reject it. The lecturer did not try to make Nietzsche into a Christian, of course, for Nietzsche was not one. Still, he pointed out that Nietzsche's critique grew out of his view, in part, of Christianity as a religion with a "slave mentality," one utterly lacking in a will-to-power. Apparently, Nietzsche had been reading Paul.

Westphal has also been reading Paul, and Augustine, and Luther, and Kierkegaard, in addition to the three founders of the "school of suspicion" as Ricoeur calls them: Frued, Marx, and Nietzsche. Westphal has brought back from his travels with these men a powerful and critical message for the church today; and when criticized, the church should pay close attention to the criticism. All three of these philosophers raise valid and very important concerns about not only the praxis of Christianity, but Christianity qua Christianity, as belief system and structure.

Nietzsche is indeed a Christian philosopher insofar as he shows us the will-to-power implicit in belief. He is correct that the Christ-idea of Christianity is antithetical to a will-to-power or a triumphalistic worldview, and that it would never and could never produce der Übermensch (that, in part, is why he hated it so). When Christianity weds itself to power, any power at all, it needs to read Nietzsche. It also needs to read Freud, badly, if it hopes to confront its wish-fulfillments in this-worldly "Kingdom of God"-speech, and its death-wishes in indulging apocalyptic orgies (note to Tim LaHaye: read more Freud). Christianity should also read Freud if it wants to really get an insight into Paul's "what I want to do, I do not, and what I do not want to do, I do," as well as a lot of Luther. Finally, a good re-reading of Marx (Marx has never really been given a good try, not since Lenin got him first and ruined him) might just show us why, after all, we not only cannot simply render unto Caesar, but why we constantly confuse Caesar and God. Great book by an important thinker.

Valid critiques of Christianity from atheism's pillars
By Timotheos Josephus
This book is unique in that it is written by a Christian who uses the arguments of Nietzsche, Freud, and Marx to critique some of the shortcomings Christianity has shown over the last 2000 years. Its important to know that the author (Westphal) is strongly committed to the truthfulness of Christianity, but he wants other believers to know that we can learn something by listening to the words of these men. While many may ignore such advice when considering the source, I believe Westphal makes a lot of valid points in this book. He likens the critiques of Nietzsche, Freud, and Marx to those of the Old Testament prophets and Jesus. However, Westphal is careful not to blindly accept every criticism which comes from these men. He listens to what they have to say and then acknowledges when they're on the mark. Christians today could learn much by doing likewise.

For more than forty-five years, Kevin Cahill has been helping to heal the world: as a leading specialist in tropical medicine and as a driving force in humanitarian assistance and relief efforts across the globe.Physician, teacher, activist, diplomat, and advocate, Cahill has touched many lives and helped right many wrongs. In this book, he chronicles extraordinary achievements of compassion and commitment. Bringing together a rich selection of writings-essays, op-ed pieces, speeches, and other works, many out of print or hard to find-he crafts a fascinating self-portrait of a life devoted to others. The writings reflect fully the range of Cahill's passions. Reporting from places under siege-Lebanon, Somalia, Nicaragua, Libya, and Ireland-Cahill writes as a physician and activist working to restore lives wounded by land mines or threatened by violence and disease. Closer to home, there are his visionary statements from the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, powerful critiques of the politics of famine and public health, and programs for new forms of humanitarian assistance to transform health and human rights.Looking back as the Bronx-born son of an Irish physician, he also touches on more personal-but no less passionate-concerns and on the impact on his life of the worlds of pain and suffering in which he has traveled. Kevin M. Cahill, M.D., is Director of the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University and President of the Center for International Health and Cooperation in New York City. He is the author and editor of many books, including Human Security for All: A Tribute to Sergio Vieira de Mello and Technology for Humanitarian Action, both in the Fordham series International Humanitarian Affairs.

Review
"It would be difficult for a biographer to weave together the many strands in the remarkable life of Kevin Cahill.... [He] has practiced as a physician in the most impoverished, strife-torn, disease-ravaged parts of the world, and devoted much of his life (and considerable powers of persuasion) to humanitarian causes all over the globe. These essays, by turns elegiac, lyrical, funny, tender, nostalgic, and vehemently impassioned, come together in an ongoing tapestry, a portrait of a dedicated physician who has dared to make a difference."

"Dr. Cahill has brought to bear a broad vision and profound concern for the troubled areas of our troublous times."

aKevin Cahill writes . . . as a physician who has been tending patients on the front line of misery for over half a century. . . . "To Bear Witness" is an important contribution to the search for a less violent 21st century.a - Michael J. OaNeill, Past President, American Society of Newspaper Editors

The Noetics of Nature: Environmental Philosophy and the Holy Beauty of the Visible (Groundworks (FUP)), by Bruce V. Foltz

Contemplative or "noetic" knowledge has traditionally been seen as the highest mode of understanding, a view that persists both in many non-Western cultures and in Eastern Christianity, where "theoria physike," or the illumined understanding of creation that follows the purification of the heart, is seen to provide deeper insights into nature than the discursive rationality modernity has used to dominate and conquer it.

Working from texts in Eastern Orthodox philosophy and theology not widely known in the West, as well as a variety of sources including mystics such as the Sufi Ibn 'Arabi, poets such as Basho, Traherne, Blake, Hölderlin, and Hopkins, and nature writers such as Muir, Thoreau, and Dillard, The Noetics of Nature challenges both the primacy of the natural sciences in environmental thought and the conventional view, first advanced by Lynn White, Jr., that Christian theology is somehow responsible for the environmental crisis.

Instead, Foltz concludes that the ancient Christian view of creation as iconic its "holy beauty" manifesting the divine energies and constituting a primal mode of divine revelation offers the best prospect for the radical reversal that is needed in our relation to the natural environment.

Review

"This splendid book makes an original and important contribution to environmental philosophy. It develops an argument the seeds for which were sown by the author's earlier work: that a fruitful approach to environmental ethics, or a proper understanding of 'the Good' with respect to nature, requires a deeper grounding in environmental aesthetics, or a clearer vision of 'the Beautiful,' which is itself ultimately rooted in an 'environmental theology.' With grace and conviction, Foltz shows that it is only by cultivating a sense of 'the Holy' that we can hope to restore a right relation to nature and to ourselves."-Christopher Dustin, College of the Holy Cross

"Bruce Foltz's book The Noetics of Nature: Environmental Philosophy and the Holy Beauty of the Visible is a tour de force, an intellectual and cultural history of nature in the West. Its original and in-depth scholarship re-centers environmental philosophy on the marginalized but crucial intersection of Hebrew and Greek thought in the West, viewed with continuity through the patristic and Byzantine eras and beyond into modern Russian philosophy, as an alternative to modern Western materialism."-Alfred Siewers, Bucknell University

"Bruce Foltz has written an original and compelling book that deserves wide attention. Drawing on Greek Patristic thought, recent environmental writers, Orthodox theology and aesthetics, and the wide sweep of philosophy from the ancient Greeks to today's phenomenology, Foltz opens multiple, fresh lines of insight and inquiry. The Noetics of Nature is an impressive achievement and a much-needed, new voice in current conversations on the healing of earth."-Norman Wirzba, Duke Divinity School

An integral work for building a better world
By Nil Nellis
Professor Foltz in his recent book ‘The Noetics of Nature’ deftly performs the task of reversing the currents of our social imagination. Reuniting our language of possibilities to lost antiphonies between Nature and our deepest affective identities, the author guides us through a corrective history based on his long philosophical journey of ‘Sailing to Byzantium’. Professor Foltz provides us with an opening to further fields of inquiry which already knows it’s fruit - a crucial resetting of our desire, done in such a way as to save us from ourselves.
By kindling our ontological depths with the beauty of ‘Theoria Physike’ the author opens the window for new personal fulfillment through our own hermeneutical readings and dialogues with what is most hauntingly real, Nature herself.
Professor Foltz and his Patristic references point to Nature as the source which returns to us our own noetic capacities. His argument does not ring shallow but illumines a much needed alternative to Lynn White Jr.’s view of Christianity as a blight on the physical world.
The author has given us a future based on renewing our mind and heart through a schooling with Nature. All things lead to a phenomenology of beauty. A beauty that grows as our noetic capacities are activated, thus leaving behind promethean materialism as a pale shadow below the reflective surface of our new adventure of ‘being’.
I am blessed to have read this work and to be launched onto the waves of an actual lake in an actual pristine wilderness. Professor Foltz’s Noetics of Nature promises to be a wonderful guide.

a thoughtful discussion of our relationship to nature
By ancientphilosopher
This is an outstanding book. It brings Eastern Orthodox thought to bear on one of the most pressing issues of modern philosophy, that of how to properly understand humanity's relationship to nature. Foltz sees modern thought as plagued by the tendency to regard nature as simply a resource for satisfying our desires, rather than a reality that exists in its own right. He argues that to overcome this tendency requires purifying the heart from the passions that corrupt our perception of ourselves and the world around us. He develops this theme by drawing widely on both Orthodox authors (the Philokalia, Maximus, Florensky, Bulgakov) and modern nature authors such as John Muir and Annie Dillard. He also critiques one-sided views of the relationship between Christianity and the natural environment, pointing out how they have overlooked the distinctive standpoint of Eastern Orthodoxy. Whether you're interested in environmental philosophy, Orthodox thought, or both, this is a book not to be missed.

Intelligent, erudite
By Fr. Cassian
This is a remarkable and sustained work of ecological ethics, informed and sustained by the Eastern Orthodox Christian theological tradition. Intelligent, erudite, thoughtful, and numinous, it is one of the best works to be written on the subject of ecology since Erazim Kohak's under-appreciated _The Embers and the Stars_.

Time Travel: The Popular Philosophy of Narrative, by David Wittenberg

This book argues that time travel fiction is a narrative "laboratory," a setting for thought experiments in which essential theoretical questions about storytelling--and by extension, about the philosophy of temporality, history, and subjectivity--are represented in the form of literal devices and plots.

Drawing on physics, philosophy, narrative theory, psychoanalysis, and film theory, the book links innovations in time travel fiction to specific shifts in the popularization of science, from evolutionary biology in the late 1800s, through relativity and quantum physics in the mid-twentieth century, to more recent multiverse cosmologies. Wittenberg shows how increasing awareness of new scientific models leads to surprising innovations in the literary "time machine," which evolves from a "vehicle" used chiefly for sociopolitical commentary into a psychological and narratological device capable of exploring with great sophistication the temporal structure and significance of subjects, viewpoints, and historical events.

The book covers work by well-known time travel writers such as H. G. Wells, Edward Bellamy, Robert Heinlein, Samuel Delany, and Harlan Ellison, as well as pulp fiction writers of the 1920s through the 1940s, popular and avant-garde postwar science fiction, television shows such as The Twilight Zone and Star Trek, and current cinema. Literature, film and TV are read alongside theoretical work ranging from Einstein, Schrödinger, and Hawking to Gérard Genette, David Lewis, and Gilles Deleuze. Wittenberg argues that even the most mainstream audiences of popular time travel fiction and cinema are vigorously engaged with many of the same questions about temporality, identity, and history that concern literary theorists, media and film scholars, and philosophers.

Review
"In this provocative book, Wittenberg moves deftly among the fields of narratology, evolutionary science, psychoanalysis, and physics (in particular quantum theory and relativity theory) as he mounts the argument that 'time travel fiction . . . [may] be regarded as a philosophical literature par excellence.'"  -KronoScope

"This is an important book, a major study of the time-travel genre which synthesises a dazzling range of references from the history of sf, cultural studies, film theory, narratology and the philosophy, physics and psychology of time." -Science Fiction Film and Television

"A fruitful cross-pollination of theory and popular fiction, this is at once a careful genre study and a wide-ranging disquisition on narratology."-Rob Latham, University of California, Riverside

"An ambitious, synthetic book. Wittenberg's brilliance lies in the comprehensive clarity with which he maps different discursive territories, and grasps how he can use time travel fiction to invent and practice, simultaneously, 'a popular philosophy of narrative.'"-Paul A. Harris, Loyola Marymount University

"This is one of the rare academic books that are worth reading all the way through." -Pro Rege

"David Wittenberg's remarkable book seeks to account for our enduring fascination with the paradoxes of time-travel stories." -Science Fiction Studies

"Time Travel is extremely well research and has a lively style, which is a pleasure to read. Academically, this book is a vital source for anyone researching or studying time-travel literature; for those with a general interest in the theme will enjoy learning about how time travel literature has evolved and how, most importantly, it has engaged us as readers."-Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction

The Symbolic Imagination: Coleridge and the Romantic Tradition (Studies in Religion and Literature), by J Robert Barth

The original edition of this book studied the nature of symbol in Coleridge's work, showing that it is central to Coleridge's intellectual endeavor in poetry and criticism as well as in philosophy and theology. Symbol was for Coleridge essentially a religious reality, that participates in the nature of a sacrament as an encounter between material and spiritual reality. The author shows how Wordsworth and Coleridge developed a poetry, unlike that of the eighteenth century, based on symbolic imagination. He then related this symbolic poetry to the tradition of romanticism itself Richard Harter Fogle wrote of the original edition: This is a just, graceful, and penetrating book. Considering the complexity of the material, it is lucid and often eloquent. Father Barth's interpretation of Coleridge's doctrine of symbol is essentially original, as are his illustrative readings from the poems. His substantial essay moves harmoniously from Coleridge's particular insights to their wider implications for romanticism. In this new edition, the author has enlarged the scope of his study, first reviewing in an introductory chapter the important scholarship of the past twenty years on symbol and imagination. He then goes on to give his work a deeper theological foundation, and to extend his argument to embrace what he calls Coleridge's scriptural imagination. As in the original edition, he concludes that symbol is a phenomenon profoundly linked with the experience of romanticism itself and with a fundamental change in religious sensibility that has echoes even in our own time.

Romanticism, Imagination and Samuel Taylor Coleridge
By David Bennett
Catholic priest Robert Barth outlines Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Romantic thought in a concise and easy to read manner. No, Coleridge was not just a poet; he was also a learned theologian and classicist. His Romantic thought consists of elevating the Imagination above mechanical reason, especially in theology. The Imagination is where we perceive symbol, and where we create symbols, such as in art, poetry, or music. When we create symbols, we participate in the creative action of God, the great "I Am." Thus for Coleridge, a worship service is a much better way to meet God than say, compiling a systematic theology. This is because the worship service appeals to the imagination through the symbols: bread, wine, stained glass, liturgy, music, etc.
Symbols are not "mere" representations. Symbols participate in the reality they symbolize, so that a handshake actually participates in brotherhood. A symbol, such as a handshake, is translucent and reveals eternal truth in the temporal. A symbol is almost synonymous with "sacrament," in that speaking a word of forgiveness, or breaking bread and wine, are symbols that point to actions and realities outside of themselves. While allegory fades and may be deconstructed, symbols are lasting and enduring, and are all somehow united with one another and God. Thus Coleridge owes much to neo-Platonism and the early Christian writers.
As an example of the differences between mechanical and imaginative perception, Coleridge believes that the mechanical mind only sees juxtapositions and order. A doctrine such as the Trinity seems absurd when perceived rationally, but in the imagination, the three and the one may "interpenetrate." This has implications for interpretation of the Bible. Chapter 6 of Barth deals primarily with this. Coleridge believes that literalists and anti-Christian scoffers all err, because they interpret the Bible in a mechanical way. They miss truths for words. Coleridge does not deny the historicity of the Bible per se, but believes that literal interpretation asks the wrong questions. Rather Biblical symbols, such as Jesus as both priest and sacrifice, while absurd to the literal mind, enrich the Bible's testimony when perceived by the Imagination.
This book is a great primer on Coleridge's thought. I seem to have been a kind of Romantic/Platonist since birth, so what Coleridge says resonates. Barth offers a clear summary of Coleridge's thought and current implications. If you have ever thought that mechanical "rational" thought misses meanings in life that you experience, Coleridge's philosophy might be for you. If not, buy it for historical study. The chapters are:
1. Theological Foundations of Coleridge on Imagination
2. Symbol as Sacrament
3. The Poetry of Reference
4. Poetry of Encounter: Wordsworth
5. Poetry of Encounter: Coleridge
6. The Scriptural Imagination
7. Symbol and Romanticism
8. Symbol and Religion: Past and Future

Speaking the Truth in Love: Theological and Spiritual Exhortations of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (Orthodox Christianity and Contempor

The second of three volumes of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's writings, this book includes a selection of major addresses and significant statements by the first among equalsand spiritual leader of the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians. Whereas the first volume covered global and interfaith issues, this volume represents the inter-Christian initiatives and theological outreach of the Patriarch, covering a range of topics, such as ecumenism and theology. It also contains various ecclesiastical declarations, such as occasional pastoral encyclicals and extraordinary patriarchal exhortations. His All Holiness was trained and experienced in inter-Christian relations, having pursued studies in Roman Catholic theology at the Gregorian University of Rome, Protestant thought at the University of Munich, and the ecumenical movement beside the World Council of Churches in Geneva. Moreover, he has lectured widely on the significance and role of Orthodox theology in contemporary society, having received honorary doctoral degrees from esteemed academic institutions throughout the world. Unafraid to address sensitive, and even controversial issues - such as papal primacy, divisions within Christianity, and inter-Orthodox unity - His All Holiness balances Orthodox doctrine and canon law with open-mindedness and open-heartedness.His official visits to Rome as the personal guest of Pope John Paul II marked the first occasions in history that an Ecumenical Patriarch met with the Roman Catholic Pope in Rome. His invitation to Pope Benedict XVI marked the opening of the Pontiff's ministry and his first visit to a Christian minority within a Muslim nation.Over the last two decades, he is also the first Ecumenical Patriarch to have traveled throughout the world and to have convened meetings of all Orthodox primates of autocephalous Churches as well as of all bishops directly within the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This book reveals the spiritual depth and profound doctrine of the Orthodox Church from the unique perspective of a Christian leader speaking the truth in love.

Review

Once again, the Ecumenical Patriarch has let us catch a glimpse of the breadth and depth of his ecumenical vision in this insightful volume of his teachings, which also includes many of his more recent addresses and homilies. In his tireless journeys across the globe, Patriarch Bartholomew has been a constant and courageous champion of Jesus' call to Unity. That call is echoed constantly and with great eloquence in this collection, which I wholeheartedly recommend to all Christians seeking to know and to follow the message of the Lord.-Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick

A deep source of knowledge and spiritual guidance, making the rich and precious gifts of Orthodox theology, church life, and experience in relationships with other churches available to the wider public! This is a real ecumenical treasure, patiently and passionately constituted by a distinguished, world-renowned, and deeply respected church leader who has received well-deserved attention for his contributions to theological and ethical reflection far beyond his own constituency. We owe our gratitude to His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for sharing these fruits of his leadership, theological wisdom, love for God's creation, and spiritual depth.-Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit

Words are not cheap in this book
By Edward M. Freeman
The present text is the second of three volumes to be published by Fordham University Press of addresses, encyclicals, sermons, and other writings by His All Holiness Bartholomew I who is the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The first volume, 'In the World, Yet Not of the World,' appeared in 2009 and contained various essays and speeches by the Ecumenical Patriarch concerning religious tolerance, human rights and international peace. Whereas there were more than a few entries about environmental awareness in the first volume, the third and forthcoming volume will contain writings by His All Holiness about the natural environment.

The editor for this series is John Chryssavgis, a theologian and deacon of the Orthodox Church, who provides a 21-page Introduction to complement a detailed biography of the Ecumenical Patriarch, which he authored for the first volume. In particular, Chryssavgis provides a timeline of significant events that shaped the Patriarch's "ecumenical conscience and theological principles" [2].

Beginning with the year 1957 when the future Patriarch entered studies in the Halki at the age of 17 [born February 1940], it is clear from the timeline that he was formed in Orthodoxy in one of the Church's more prominent schools before a three-year sojourn in Rome at the Oriental Institute. There he defended his dissertation three years later at the age of 26. By the end of his studies at the Oriental Institute, he had already mastered Italian, Latin and French to add to his native bilingual fluency in Greek and Turkish. English is his third language, but he acquired fluency in English before he studied in Rome.

In seven detailed pages [3-9], the editor traces the Ecumenical Patriarch's formative events in life from 1957 until his appointment in 1972 to the Private Patriarchal Office of Patriarch Dimitrios, who preceded him on the chair of St. Andrew. Serving in this capacity led the future Patriarch Bartholomew I to accompany his predecessor in all international travels. Therefore, it came as no surprise that the Holy Synod elected him to succeed his spiritual father and mentor, +Dimitrios, in October 1991 as the 270th Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch.

Subsequent to the timeline in the Introduction, the editor provides three diverse impressions of the current Patriarch, whose writings begin on page 22. The first impressions come from the pen of the late Olivier Clément in his 1997 monograph, 'Conversations with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I' [St. Vladimir Orthodox Seminary Press]. These pages shine with his recollections of conversations shared, interspersed between historical and current events in the Church that shed light on the character of Bartholomew. The other two biographers of Bartholomew are Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, who is well acquainted with the vision and leadership of Bartholomew, and Dr. Samuel Kobia, the immediate past Secretary General of the World Council of Churches, who as a Methodist clergyman from Kenya attests to Bartholomew's support of international peace and ecumenical dialogue.

The Foreword to this second volume is by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. Williams explores two principal themes that he identifies in the text: (1) an orientation toward a global identity by the Orthodox Church as opposed to prisons of local or ethnic make-up; and (2) a pervasive and penetrating engagement of Church in the world and for the world as an extension of Christ, the Church's Head, and His kenosis.

Five chapters provide a framework for the Patriarch's writings: (1) Encyclicals for the major Christian seasons and feasts [22-105]; (2) Addresses to members of the Orthodox Church [106-92]; (3) Presentations at ecumenical gatherings [193-313]; (4) Academic lectures and discourses [314-81]; and (5) Assorted messages and declarations [382-426]. Relative equality of apportionment is evident in pages assigned to each of five chapters, but the third chapter that provides Bartholomew's presentations at ecumenical gatherings holds the largest number of pages in comparison with the others.

Excerpted passages from chapter three include:

(1) "Today, Orthodoxy is called to continue this dialogue with the outside world in order to provide witness and the life-giving breath of its faith. However, this dialogue cannot reach the outside world unless it first passes through all those who bear the Christian name" [194].

(2) "Today's world experiences great stress stemming from insufficient human communication. Uncertainty and suspicion prevail with respect to the sincerity, intentions, and aspirations of various human societies that rally against each other" [200].

(3) In welcoming His Holiness Benedict XVI, who visited the Phanar in 2009, Bartholomew wrote: "This journey toward achieving full communion, as enjoyed by our churches in common during the first millennium, has already commenced with the dialogue of love and truth, and it continues by God's grace despite occasional difficulties" [231].

(4) Speaking in a homily delivered at St. Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the World Council of Churches, Bartholomew was courageous to recall a crisis in ecumenical solidarity that had befallen the WCC ten years prior. "That crisis was initially attributed to differences between Orthodox and Protestant members of the council, but it was in fact a crisis between those representing different theological and ecclesiological traditions as well as between the various churches, each of which had its own distinctive interpretation of holy scripture, and a different perception of moral, social and political issues. It was nonetheless a healthy crisis that enabled us to engage in sincere and humble dialogue, with no ulterior motives" [238].

These are courageous and conciliatory messages of hope. Each selection demonstrates sound Orthodox Theology and Christology while engaging an ecumenical mission that has been tested by fire over the past two decades. Readers will appreciate the author's vision, such as we should "...never grow tired of conversing with those of good faith who ask the reason of the hope that we have within us" [220].

Desperate Clarity: Chronicles of Intellectual Life, 1942, by Maurice Blanchot

These articles gradually outline a practical project that both looks back to the radical artistic doctrines of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and anticipates the most original developments in the postwar era, among writers such as Robbe-Grillet, Butor, Sarraute, and Duras, not to mention Blanchot himself. In addition, Blanchot is receptive in his weekly column to the extraordinarily wide range of original writing and thinking that was produced during the dark years of occupation, in areas such as psychology, anthropology, ancient history, linguistics, and philosophy. A highly original doctrine of writing can be seen to develop in which, thanks to the desperate clarity with which Blanchot's mind accepts and advances into what he sees as absolute and irrevocable disaster, thought is carefully and systematically deflected away from any sort of nihilism, thanks to a new relationship between reason with its unitary subject and the otherness to which imagination offers access.

Review

"Maurice Blanchot became the greatest literary critic in Europe in the second half of the twentieth century. Here, though, in these early pieces, we find him as a reviewer. And what a reviewer he is! "Things emerge in what is always a strange light," he writes. This is the light that literature casts, he comes to think. We read these reviews with admiration: their like could never appear in today's papers. And, when we look at them with political lenses, we learn a great deal about mid-century French political culture. Michael Holland has translated them beautifully, and his introduction is superb."-Kevin Hart, The University of Virginia

Orthodox Christianity and Nationalism in Nineteenth-Century Southeastern Europe (Orthodox Christianity and Contemporary Thought (FUP))Fr

Nation-building processes in the Orthodox commonwealth brought together political institutions and religious communities in their shared aims of achieving national sovereignty. Chronicling how the churches of Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, and Serbia acquired independence from the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the wake of the Ottoman Empire's decline, Orthodox Christianity and Nationalism in Nineteenth-Century Southeastern Europe examines the role of Orthodox churches in the construction of national identities.

Drawing on archival material available after the fall of communism in southeastern Europe and Russia, as well as material published in Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian, Romanian, and Russian, Orthodox Christianity and Nationalism in Nineteenth-Century Southeastern Europe analyzes the challenges posed by nationalism to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the ways in which Orthodox churches engaged in the nationalist ideology.

Review

"For too long, the scholarly literature on Eastern Orthodoxy has been accessible only to polyglots. Here, however, a first-rate team of contributors not only brings the subject within reach of an English-speaking readership, but also relates it to current debates about the development of nations and nationalism. Empirically grounded and theoretically informed, this important new book will speak to historians and political scientists alike."--Simon Dixon, Sir Bernard Pares Professor of Russian History, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London

"This is an excellent collection. It provides the first overview showing how Orthodox Churches helped form nation-states in Southeastern European. The editor assembles a first rate cast of scholars and in his introduction effectively situates the topic within the broader field of nationalism. It will be of interest to students of nationalism , of religion, and of area studies."--John Hutchinson, Reader in Nationalism and Ethnicity, London School of Economics and Political Science

"The Orthodox nations of South-Eastern Europe all emerged in the nineteenth (and early twentieth) century from the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. Nationhood and Orthodoxy were entwined. However, as the studies in this book demonstrate, the process of emergence as a nation differed very significantly in each case, whether Greece, Serbia, Romania or Bulgaria. Their relationships to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, their conceptions of their (often mythicized) past, the relationship between church and state: all these differed and interacted with each other in varying ways. This complex history is illuminated in the contributions to this fascinating book, which lays bare concerns that belong not just to the nineteenth century, but to Europe today to which all these nations belong, or aspire to belong."--Andrew Louth , Professor Emeritus of Patristic and Byzantine Studies, Durham University

"Unlike the Roman Catholic Church, which has adopted a centralized perspective in both its teachings and organization, during the last two centuries Eastern Orthodox churches have maintained centralization of teachings, but encouraged the organization of churches along ethnic lines and with separate hierarchical structures. While successful in overcoming centralism and clericalism, the Orthodox churches have encountered another danger, namely nationalism, whose influence rendered them vulnerable to factionalism and unable to speak with a unified voice in today's ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue. This volume on the relationship between nationalism and Orthodoxy in the 19th and early 20th century represents a major breakthrough in the scholarship on religion and nationalism because it provides for the first time in-depth analyses of the complex interplay between the nascent national Orthodox churches and the emergence of the Balkan nation-states."--Lucian Turcescu, Concordia University

"This book provides an excellent essay on each of the countries under consideration. With fifty pages of notes any student of Balkan church history should have enough source material to provide a fair evaluation of the steps that occurred in this century of rapid change."-Charles A. Frazee, Church History

"In the great family of Christian denominations, few are more mysterious to the western mind than Orthodoxy. Its liturgies are deemed exotic, its theology dimly understood, and its ecclesiastical organisation the subject of befuddled conjecture [...] there can be no hesitation in recommending this volume to as wide an audience as possible; scholars of modern European Christianity in particular will find much that is useful in its pages. It is only to be hoped that the book will encourage further scholarship in this vein."-James White, Europe-Asia Studies

Eventually the Patriarchate in Constantinople used or better to say abused the situation in which those Churches ...
By I. V.
This is ONLY a warning for prior reading this book: it seems that a common mistake of the Greek theologians and historians is the belief that Slavic nations of the Southeastern Europe with their respectful autocephalous Churches acquired a sense of national identity only in the 19th century as a product of the Enlightenment etc. Every serious student of Church history should know some basic facts, namely that Cyril and Methodoius preached Christianity in native language, coined the Slavic alphabet, translated books from Greek into Slavonic, organized Churches with their indigenous clergy, etc. This being said, this was a kernel for national identity of the respectful Churches. Serbian Orthodox Church gained it's independence or autocephaly from Constantinople, at that time its see was in Nicea because the Capital was conquered by the Crusades, in 1219. Its first Archbishop was St. Sava. The respectful Church was raised to a status of Patriarchate in 1346, which caused a breach with Constantinople for some 30 years. Similar national self-awakening was with Bulgarians. When Ottomans came all of those nations were conquered for several centuries, which hampered their national and ecclesiastical flourishing. Eventually the Patriarch of Constantinople used or better to say abused the situation in which those Churches found themselves, and acting in a real "pastoral" and "sisterly" way unilaterally abolished their independence (in 1766) and simply subjugated the nations and their Churches under his staff deploying Greek-speaking hierarchy and clergy. With all of this in mind, the 19th century is not reawakening of identity (Serbian or Bulgarian for example) which, as the authors or editors of the volume believe, never existed before BUT only a final liberation from the yokes (political - Ottoman - and ecclesiastical - Constantinople -), which allowed those nations to continue their national and ecclesiastical burgeoning that had begun several centuries, or better to say, almost a millennium years ago.

Amazing detail and balance by multiple authors on a rarely covered subject. Especially good for Balkan studies and Orthodox Christians everywhere.
