Not For Beginners

This book is definitely not for a beginning watercolorist and I don't think the author and publishers intended it to be. If you are just beginning to paint in watercolor in a realistic style I recommend starting with books aimed for beginners first. That said, for high-intermediate to advanced watercolorists who want to learn new ways to add life to their paintings this is one of the best books out there using the pouring process as the primary means vs. painting with a brush. That doesn't mean Ms. Engle doesn't use brushes, it's just that they are only one of several techniques at her disposal.
I got this book after having read Creative Discoveries in Watermedia. So I understand why the title says 'Experimental Techniques for Achieving Realistic Effects'. Many of the same techniques from the Creative Discoveries book are used here as well. Everything from squirt bottles to pouring the paints and tipping the board to let the paint run where it will to textural techniqes for added interest. All the chapters introduce fun methods for paiting but I'm glad design (aka composition) has a chapter of its own. All the techniques in the world won't save a painting with a poor design (that's when you just crop it and make it a mixed media experimental painting!) :)
My favorite chapter is the last one. It discusses experimental techiques, mediums, methods, etc. This is the only watercolor book I've ever seen that mentions W&N's Aquapasto medium, a product I love for adding texture elements to some of my more experimental paintings. If you're an intermediate to advanced watercolorist looking for new ideas you'll find plenty of them here.

Experimental Techniques in watercolor by Nita Engle

This is a must have book for the library of any watercolor artist! Nita Engle has been in the business for years and has the added advantage of being a very popular workshop teacher. If you can't attend her workshop, buy this book! I am a professional portrait artist whose husband is also an artist specializing in watercolors. Don't look for portraits in this book-look for some of the most amazing watercolor landscapes to be found in any book! This lady explains with no holds barred! Everything is detailed with a wonderful carefree banter. She is comfortable in her medium and her attitude. The many photos are outstanding! We were captivated by this book as there are too many wishy washy watercolor books out there with no real subject matter. We are quite critical of "how to" books that don't have any "how to" in them. If you are serious about watercolor and are ready for some major changes, then realize that this book won't sit on your shelf. You will be immediately rewarded with that artistic excitement that comes with the discovery of a new method or skill in which to energize your work! This is a gem and we speak from our experiences of years of making a living as artists!

excellant book for experienced watercolor painters

No matter what anybody says, watercolor painting is difficult. There are many instructional books out on the market that says they can help you become an excellant painter in ??? easy lessons. It just doesn't work that way. You can become a profecient painter by learning the basic techniques and,most important,paint, paint, and paint some more. Nita Engle has written a book that allows you to add some fun and spice to the time you paint,paint,and paint some more. Nita is a very respected teacher and painter and if you can't arrange to go to one of her workshops, buy this book! The effects Nita has evolved is amazing and she clearly explains how to get these effects. This book won't turn you into a wonderful painter in ?? easy lessons, but if you are a watercolor painter this is one book you'll use for years. Don't miss it!

Invaluable guide for filmmakers thinking of entering festivals

I am a 66-year-old filmmaker who teaches filmmaking at the Delphi Center of the University of Louisville. I work with a group of younger folks who are considering making a short film to enter in film festivals and I read Chris Gore's book to find out how to do this effectively and what to expect. The book was entertaining and highly informative. The interviews with other filmmakers about their experiences on the film festival circuit are invaluable. After reading this book, I feel like I have attended 100 film festivals just like Chris has. The documentary "Official Rejection" available from Netflix, is also a wonderful resource and well worth the hour and 47 minutes it takes to view it--you get to see, hear, and feel what life on the film festival circuit is like.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK USED

Unlike the other editions of this book, this edition's guides to the individual festivals is only available online -- using the serial number printed in the book. If someone else has used your serial number, you will not be able to access the most valuable information the book has to offer. I've owned a previous edition, and was expecting to be able to access the same information, only updated. Now I'm out of luck. I wish the book description had included this caveat.

By taking the antagonism of culture and civilization to be fundamental for Nietzsche's conception of humanity and its becoming, Lemm gives a new entry point into the political significance of Nietzsche's thought. The opposition between civilization and culture allows for the possibility that politics is more than a set of civilizational techniques that seek to manipulate, dominate, and exclude the animality of the human animal. By seeing the deep-seated connections of politics with culture, Nietzsche orients politics beyond the domination over life and, instead, offers the animality of the human being a positive, creative role in the organization of life. Lemm's book presents Nietzsche as the thinker of an emancipatory and affirmative biopolitics.This book will appeal not only to readers interested in Nietzsche, but also to anyone interested in the theme of the animal in philosophy, literature, cultural studies and the arts, as well as those interested in the relation between biological life and politics.

Of the many books being produced to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration of the river named after him, this may be the best, a series of essays by top scholars on the Dutch influence on the development of New York State LONG after the English conquered the Dutch in 1674. Fascinating. Accompanies a show at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers this summer but also stands alone perfectly.

Since the mid-1980s, attempts to think history and literature together have produced much exciting work in the humanities. Indeed, some form of historicism can be said to inform most of the current scholarship in literary studies, including work in poetics, yet much of this scholarship remains undertheorized.Envisioning a revitalized and more expansive historicism, this volume builds on the tradition of Historical Poetics, pioneered by Alexander Veselovsky (1838-1906) and developed in various fruitful directions by the Russian Formalists, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Olga Freidenberg. The volume includes previously untranslated texts of some of the major scholars in this critical tradition, as well as original contributions which place that tradition in dialogue with other thinkers who have approached literature in a globally comparatist and evolutionary-historical spirit. The contributors seek to challenge and complement a historicism that stresses proximate sociopolitical contexts through an engagement with the longue durée of literary forms and institutions. In particular, Historical Poetics aims to uncover deep-historical stratifications and asynchronicities, in which formal solutions may display elective affinities with other, chronologically distant solutions to analogous social and political problems.By recovering the traditional nexus of philology and history, Persistent Forms seeks to reinvigorate poetics as a theoretical discipline that would respond to such critical and intellectual developments as Marxism, New Historicism, the study of world literature, practices of distant reading, and a renewed attention to ritual, oral poetics, and genre.

Along with Majorie O'Rourke Boyle's LOYOLA'S ACTS: THE RHETORIC OF THE SELF this is a wonderful study of Loyola by a Jesuit using Loyola's own self examination on himself in the process shows the real structure and point of the ACTA. As scholarship, it challenges all standard run of the mill scholarly techniques, and, in itself, makes a strong philosophical statement worked out in Loyola's life, the great work of scholars like Boyle & John W. O'Malley, and the author's own experience both of scholarly discipline and in existential commitment. As such IT IS A PRIME TEXT for anyone whatsoever that studies philosophy and theology seriously, and anyone who has any real interest in the psychology of a real thinking human being.

It's no wonder that New York has always been a magnet city for writers. Manhattan is one of the most walkable cities in the world. While many novelists, poets, and essayists have enjoyed long walks in New York, not all of them have had favorable impressions. Returning to New York after an absence of two decades, Henry James loathed many things about "bristling" New York, while native New Yorker Walt Whitman both celebrated and criticized "Mannahatta" in his writings.

About the Author

Stephen Miller is a freelance writer and the author of five books. His articles on literary, political, and cultural questions have appeared in many journals in the United States and Great Britain, including the American Scholar, the Times Literary Supplement, Partisan Review, and Sewanee Review, among others. He has an M.A. in English from Yale and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Rutgers.

A wonderful literary stroll through history ! The author provides background and historical context to the literati's accounts of their meanderings about their favorite (and not so favorite) environs. It is both interesting and enlightening

Writers and walking

Both literary guidebook and a work of literary scholarship, Stephen Miller introduces us to the writers who have not only walked in New York but to all those who have enjoyed or commented on the act of walking throughout history. The first chapter looks right back to Plato and Socrates and covers all parts of the world. Then Miller goes on to talk about 12 writers in particular who have walked the streets of New York and written down their thoughts and impressions. From Charles Dickens to Walt Whitman, from Henry James to Teju Cole, all have been inspired in some way by the city and all have reacted to it in different ways. With an excellent introductory chapter about walking itself, the book is an intriguing and thought-provoking study of the writers Miller has chosen and is an original approach to their writings. As much a general history of the city as a literary history, there’s something for everyone here, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s certainly a book I would take with me were I too to be walking New York’s streets to take myself back in time to see what others have discovered.
