While both provocatively challenged whether we can study the world in ways that do not duplicate the prejudices that sustain its inequalities, Fanon, she argues, outlined a vision of how to bring into being the democratically legitimate alternatives that Rousseau mainly imagined.

Discussing in fresh ways topics as diverse as immigrant women's fashion, critiques of consumerism in Italian immigrant radicalism, the Italian American influence in early rock 'n' roll, ethnic tourism in Little Italy, and Guido subculture, Making Italian America recasts Italian immigrants and their children as active consumers who, since the turn of the twentieth century, have creatively managed to articulate relations of race, gender, and class and create distinctive lifestyles out of materials the marketplace offered to them. The success of these mostly working-class people in making their everyday culture meaningful to them as well as in shaping an ethnic identity that appealed to a wider public of shoppers and spectators looms large in the political history of consumption. Making Italian America appraises how immigrants and their children redesigned the market to suit their tastes and in the process made Italian American identities a lure for millions of consumers.

Tomie De Paola is internationally recognized for having written and illustrated many children's books, including "The Lady of Guadalupe", "The Clown of God", "Cat on the Doverfell", "Big Anthony and the Magic Ring", and "Strega Nona", a Caldecott Honor book. Using watercolours and inks in this book to create full-colour illustrations, Mr. de Paola is faithful to the text. Since St. Nicholas is described in the poem as "a right jolly old elf," the artist has made him elflike, and shows him driving a miniature sleigh with eight tiny reindeer. Mr. de Paola has set the poem in a mid-nineteenth century New England town, using quilt designs from his own collection for the borders. This is the 100th book he has illustrated.

Any book by Tomie dePaola is a hit. He is an excellent illustrator. It is an educational book that provides nicknames of clouds and explains the various types of clouds and what they do. My children enjoyed this book and read it many times over and used it to identify different types of clouds they saw in the sky. The illustrations help them identify the clouds they see too.

Essential For Any Sculptor Looking To Break-In

I spent about ten years of my life writing and helping to promote popular collectibles from action figures to resin busts. It's very easy for an outsider to be dismissive of the art of such things - who didn't own a Princess Leia action figure that made her look more simian than human. But the truth is, the mass manufacturing process means that sometimes a lot of detail gets lost. Certainly in my time I saw the standards of sculpting rise from the barely acceptable to the truly stunning. I dare anyone to walk into the Four Horsemen's studios and look at the Masters of the Universe 2-Ups (basically a prototype at twice the finished size) and not have their breath taken away.

Tim Bruckner is one, if not the best, in the business. He's a pro's pro - a sculptor other sculptors look up to. If you've ever seen DC Direct's Alex Ross-inspired Justice Line you can see a lot of his best work. In fact he's worked on a lot of DC Direct's properties bringing various comic artists' drawings into the 3D realm.

So now Tim has teamed up with Zach Oat of Toyfare fame and Rubén Procopio (Electric Tiki amongst other things) to bring us the definitive book on creating action figures and statues.

You'd think with the number of customizers and people wanting to break into the industry there would be a wealth of books on the subject, but this is the first one I've ever seen, and frankly, after being amazed by how comprehensive it is, I don't think another one is ever going to be needed.

What's stunning about this book is the level of detail. It goes into everything, filled not just with information, but tips as well. It starts with looking at the art reference, goes through the sculpting and casting to painting and ends with tips on going pro. Gorgeous photography detailing the various processes sit alongside little cartoon asides that not only raise a smile but raise pertinent points.

If you've ever marvelled at the level of art in an action figure or bust, then this is a fascinating book even if you have no intention of ever sculpting yourself. You can just dip into it and always come back with some new piece of knowledge you never had before. But if you're into customizing and hoping one day to turn it into a full-time job then this book is a god-send. Seriously, in ten years' time I reckon this will be THE textbook every sculptor learns from.

As someone who worked on the fringes of the industry for ten years, it's an incredible book. For anyone looking to get into the industry I'd say it's pretty much damn well essential.

Incredible book that could use a bit more editing

Wow, I have spent countless hours trying to learn as much as possible about this industry and trying to complete some good works. This book blows all of my knowledge out of the water. It should be noted that in order to really "follow along" with the project presented in the book you will need A LOT of supplies. pressure pot, compressor, wax pen, camping stove, rubber mold materials, resins, the list goes on but all of it is required to get the job done. A very daunting task indeed.
The book is very well written with lots of witty comments and animations. I have only had it for 2 days and am nearly done with it because I love to read it so much. It makes the process seem much easier than it is and encourages me to spend more time in the studio.
My only gripe would be that their is a lot of editing issues, missing words, odd image references est but its no biggy. The pictures are as a whole very good with only a few blurry spots here and there. It is certainly a must buy for anyone interested in the industry of Toys.

I enjoy drawing and wanted to try something new. I never really got into Manga prior to this but I must say after just flipping through the book I fell in love with the simplistic yet adorable animals offered in this book! This book offers the basic steps for creating the applicable faces/bodies of Manga and Chibis and even has steps for tweaking your art in photoshop programs and info on creating your own page full of creatures for the use in comics! Good book with lots of information (and not just for young people, I am 23 and a female and love it)! Before you know it, you will be drawing cute creatures too!

Step by step, easy to follow directions

Ever wondered just how the mangakas draw those cute little
sidekicks, animals, and chibis? Drawing Manga Animals
shows you how to create those little creatures in a step-
by-step process. It tells all; everything from heads and
bodies to coloring your creations in on the computer using
photoshop.

I enjoyed looking through this book and
seeing all the pictures. Everything was very simple and
in an easy to follow format. The author used both
pictures and words to describe how to draw the animals,
which was beneficial for me. I'm not very good with
drawing, so the fact that there were words and pictures
telling me how to draw them helped a lot. I really like
the assortment of lessons and animals that it gave. There
were real life animals like squirrels and rabbits, but
there were also mythical creatures like dragons and
kitsune, fox people. Also, the instructions on how to use
the computer to color in the drawings were very detailed
and showed screenshots to show exactly what should be on
the computer screen. I will definitely share this with my
friends who love to draw!

Has the points you need... If you're already an artist.

Illustrations for all sorts of animals? Yes. Fantasy, normal, even full-size despite being a book on chibis. You cannot, on any platform, fault this book for lack of illustration. The only things to really complain about are probably incredibly common complaints--lack of instruction. The diagrams are simple to follow and understand, but diagrams alone can't tell you all you need to know (unless you fly that way, in which case I would be jealous.) The written instructions are lacking enough to leave a bit of a roadblock, so if you're not confident in your ability to "Look, copy, draw", then I don't really recommend this. Winning the Peace

America's Japan was first published in Japanese in Japan in 1986. Although Grant Goodman is American, he wrote the book in Japanese for a Japanese audience. Now that the Bush administration has compared the attempt to democratize Iraq with the post-World War II efforts to democratize Germany and Japan, America's Japan has a new relevance and has been translated into English for an American audience.

The language in America's Japan is deceptively simple. Goodman describes his life in Cleveland. He is in high school when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. He is still seventeen when he begins his studies at Princeton, then volunteers to participate in an intensive Japanese language training course for Army officers. He does well, joins the Army, gets his lieutenant's bars, and is on the way to the Philippines in June, 1945.

As an interrogator, he doesn't see combat. There aren't many prisoners to question, because "the American soldiers usually preferred to shoot Japanese soldiers rather than take them prisoners. And really, it was probably unreasonable to ask the U.S. soldiers to take live prisoners under the extremely harsh conditions of jungle warfare."

The few prisoners they do see are pretty beaten down and don't put up much resistance. The interrogation room was "a dark room with almost no windows. The Japanese prisoners were brought into this dark room stark naked, then they would suddenly have a spotlight shone on them and interrogation would begin from a place high above them. The interrogation desk must have been elevated some ten feet above the floor."

Goodman arrives in Tokyo in October, 1945, after the surrender. One of his first assignments is to procure a desk chair for General MacArthur. He finds one in the office of the president of a Japanese company. The president is still sitting in the chair, so Goodman requisitions it from the astonished businessman by order of General MacArthur. Goodman explains that under the terms of the Occupation, the Japanese were obliged to supply the Army with whatever it needed.

Goodmans views of MacArthur, the Japanese Constitution, and the occupied Japanese are straightforward and honest. He was barely twenty-one when this took place, and there is an odd air of innocence in the narrative. But every so often, the older Goodman surfaces with an observation made with the perspective of time. He says that the American-style constitution was vital for the Japanese government to re-emerge on the world stage. He also mentions that the Japanese were not convinced of the importance of a constitution at the time, and that the Americans, who felt that time was of the essence, wrote the first draft on their own, although the Americans insisted that the Japanese had done most of the work.

America's Japan is a very short book, 147 pages, but Goodman touches on a number of subjects, serious and not so serious. On the lighter side, he talks about how the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta The Mikado was received in Japan. More serious is his description of translating the diary of a Japanese civilian who participated in beheading the pilots of an American bomber that was shot down over their village.

It's interesting that America's Japan is finally available for Americans to read. It will be even more interesting to see if it is translated into Arabic for Iraqis to read.
