A Dancer in the Revolution: Stretch Johnson, Harlem Communist at the Cotton Club (Empire State Editions), by Howard Eugene Johnson

This candid, at times searingly honest, memoir offers a captivating insider's view of life, culture, and politics in 1930s0070s Harlem and delivers the keen insights of a truly inspirational Black American who fought all his life for freedom.

The life of Howard Johnson, nicknamed "Stretch" because of his height (6'5"), epitomizes the cultural and political odyssey of a generation of African Americans who transformed the United States from a closed society to a multiracial democracy. Johnson's long-awaited memoir traces his path from firstborn of a multiclass/multiethnic" family in New Jersey to dancer in Harlem's Cotton Club to communist youth leader and, later, professor of Black studies. A Dancer in the Revolution is a powerful statement about Black resilience and triumph amid subtle and explicit racism in the United States.

Johnson's engaging, beautifully written memoir provides a window into everyday life in Harlem--neighborhood life, arts and culture, and politics--from the 1930s to the 1970s, when the contemporary Black community was being formed. A Dancer in the Revolution explores Johnson's twenty-plus years in the Communist Party and
illuminates in compelling detail how the Harlem branch functioned and flourished in the 1930s and '40s. Johnson thrived as a charismatic leader, using the connections he built up as an athlete and dancer to create alliances between communist organizations and a cross-section of the Black community. In his memoir, Johnson also exposes the homoerotic tourism that was a feature of Harlem's nightlife in the 1930s. Some of America's leading white literary, musical, and artistic figures were attracted to Harlem not only for the community's artistic creativity but to engage in illicit sex--gay and straight--with their Black counterparts.

A Dancer in the Revolution is an invaluable contribution to the literature on Black political thought and pragmatism. It reveals the unique place that Black dancers and artists hold in civil rights pursuits and anti-racism campaigns in the United States and beyond. Moreover, the life of "Stretch" Johnson illustrates how political activism engenders not only social change but also personal fulfillment, a realization of dreams not deferred but rather pursued and achieved. Johnson's journey bears witness to critical periods and events that shaped the Black condition and American society in the process.

Review

"Howard "Stretch" Johnson's life story, ably edited by Wendy Johnson, is a compelling drama of race, dance, and radical politics of the 1930s to 1960s. No other book offers so much deep personal insight in these areas, and this book deserves as many readers as Claude McKay's Home to Harlem."--Paul Buhle, authorized biographer of C.L.R. James and retired Senior Lecturer, Brown University

"This is an excellent publication that provides an insider's view of everyday life and culture in Harlem during the period in which the contemporary black community is being formed."--Henry Louis Taylor Jr., University at Buffalo, SUNY

"Although this book touches on issues of race and class endlessly discussed by the US left for decades, it is primarily the story of one man's experience living in a nation whose history is defined by those issues. that life explains more than a thousand debates."--Counterpunch

“Dancer in the Revolution”: Memoir of Stretch Johnson, Harlem communist
By Barbara Russum
“Dancer in the Revolution”: Memoir of Stretch Johnson, Harlem communist
Tony Pecinovsky, Peoplesworld.org
History is a curious thing, full of drama, intrigue, plot twists and misadventures. Howard “Stretch” Johnson’s posthumously published memoir is similarly curious.
A Dancer in the Revolution: Stretch Johnson, Harlem Communist at the Cotton Club is a quick-paced, fascinating glimpse into the life a one-time Communist Party USA leader. Part anecdotal, part history - though all entertaining - I breezed through A Dancer over a weekend.
I especially enjoyed the matter-of-fact tone of Johnson’s story. His narrative jumps from Depression-era dancer to international communist, from youthful drugs and debauchery to isolation, loneliness and alcoholism during the McCarthy era, when he and other communists went underground, separated from his wife and family.
While working in the mob-run, world-famous jazz scene that was the 1930s Cotton Club, “Stretch” Johnson received “a postgraduate course in the complexities of class relationships in America.” According to him, the Cotton Club was “the laboratory”: The “arrogance of the mob toward society in general was exponentially multiplied when it was mixed with white racist attitudes.”
It was Johnson’s first-hand experiences with racism, as an entertainer, that would shape his political outlook and lead him to eventually join the Communist Party USA. “It was a perfectly logical step in my development,” he wrote, “to join the American Communist Party. Being Black and beginning to look for some solution to the problem of survival, there seemed to be nothing else to do. American society had excluded us.”
It was through the Harlem Young Communist League and American Youth Congress - a party-led, broad-based youth organization - that Johnson gained valuable early experience as an organizer and learned that “Blacks, generally, were not as easily hoodwinked about the advantages of capitalism.” The “disadvantages and penalties the system imposed” through “institutionalized processes and norms that maintain the racist infrastructure,” served to weaken African American loyalty to an economy and ideology that had had quite literally sold them down the river.
In 1941, Johnson attended the Southern Negro Youth Congress convention. SNYC, “a model communist-led youth organization,” challenged racism and Jim Crow head-on in the South. According to Johnson, “The cadre brought forward [by the SNYC and its communist leadership] in the South became the shock troops of the later developing civil rights movement.” James Jackson, Esther Cooper-Jackson, “Stretch” Johnson and many other young communists undoubtedly laid the groundwork and paved the way for the tremendous changes soon to come. They are only now beginning to be recognized for their outstanding, selfless commitment and leadership.
By 1946 Johnson had returned home from war, having spent part of that time with communist partisans in Italy. Now a veteran, he helped to found and organize the communist-led United Negro and Allied Veterans of America (UNAVA), an organizational illustration of “our practical activity,” which “develop[ed] a nationwide campaign on the terminal leave pay issue.” By some estimates, upwards of $300 million - a staggering sum, especially during this time - “was being denied veterans in the South through the control of the distribution of application forms by the [racist] plantation owners.”
Additionally, when African American veterans did receive their terminal leave pay, “white plantation bosses would charge from 50 percent to 75 percent of the value of the checks to cash it.” Terminal leave pay was usually around $300, or about one year’s pay. Undoubtedly, racist plantation owners did not like the idea of a “labor shortage” or of financially independent African Americans.
Eventually, Johnson and the rest of the UNAVA leadership secured an agreement with the War Department “to distribute the terminal leave pay application forms nationally,” which they did with “big fanfare and send-off from our New York headquarters,” where “1 million terminal leave pay blanks had been delivered quite dramatically.” Johnson estimates that “close to $30 million reached the veterans, a sum they would not have obtained without our efforts.”
Johnson’s telling of the UNAVA campaign (an amazing piece of history!), as well as his other adventures, has energy, direction, and propulsive drive. His stories whet the appetite and provide just enough of a hint to lead the curious, like myself, down the rabbit hole, searching for ever more clues to this intriguing phenomenon called history. Johnson is at his best when recounting these stories.
After Khrushchev’s 1956 revelations of Stalin’s crimes, Johnson “quietly” left the Party, “discontinuing my eighteen-year association” without red-baiting or repudiating “my whole past activism in the labor and civil rights struggles.”
While no longer a party member, Johnson continued as an academic and activist until his passing on May 25, 2000.
A Dancer in the Revolution: Stretch Johnson, Harlem Communist at the Cotton Club is honest, maybe sometimes too honest. The events described in Johnson’s memoir paint a flawed, often contradictory, always humanizing picture. “Stretch” Johnson was a dancer and a communist, but he was also so much more. His memoir is well worth the read.

Dynamic Judaism: The Essential Writings of Mordecai M. Kaplan, by Emanuel Goldsmith, Mel Scult

Kaplan's concept of Judaism as an evolving religious civilization was widely influential in 20th-century American Jewish life, and his founding of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College created a new denomination. This book contains a biographical essay and excerpts from all his major works.

From Library Journal
The late Mordecai M. Kaplan was the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, the fourth branch of contemporary American Judaism. Reconstructionism eschews belief in a supernatural deity but stresses the ethnicity, folkways, and cultural aspects of the Jewish faith. This intelligently organized anthology contains excerpts from Kaplan's basic writings which elucidate his theology, teachings, and suggestions for the con tinuance and survival of the Jewish reli gion. An excellent introduction to Re constructionism for general readers and should be in most Judaica collec tions. Robert A. Silver, Shaker Heights P.L., Ohio

From the Back Cover
Mordecai M. Kaplan began his life's journey with the confines of a small Lithuanian town on the outskirts of Vilna. He was born on a Friday evening in June of 1881. Kaplan's submergence in a total Jewish atmosphere is illustrated by the fact that he knew his day of birth only by the Jewish calendar until he went to the New York Public Library as a young man to look up the corresponding date. Kaplan's family was a traditional one in every aspect, and his father, Israel Kaplan, was a learned man.

A very tough slog
By calmaniac
I am very interested in Kaplan's teachings and hoped this book would give me a better sense of that. I found it to be very tough reading. I am a scientist with years of graduate training and have a very high tolerance for technical reading, yet found Kaplan's writing a very tough slog. This is not easily accessible for the average reader and will be a challenge for most.

Valuable to grasp the revolutionary stance taken by Kaplan and then to assess how far new generations have progressed and expanded on his premises.

Knowledge
By Stark
Kaplan was an Orthodox rabbi of immense knowledge, his contribution to the Orthodox Union and Conservative Judaism is rarely mentioned now. His philosophy is a great way forward for the Jewish people as the Orthodox is trying to swim against the stream while Reform flows right with the stream. Kaplanian philosophy presents a naturalistic metaphysical stance, where tradition may still have a role while totally embracing modernity and the scientific values it has. I highly recommend the read for all Jews. I read Reform, Conservative and Orthodox writings, but rarely do people mention reconstructionism as an option for Modern American Jews, and as such this read was enlightening and educational.

More than a Monologue: Sexual Diversity and the Catholic Church: Voices of Our Times (Catholic Practice in North America (FUP))From Ford

This powerful new collection gives voice to the lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons with and within the Catholic Church, and promotes much-needed dialogue about faith and sexuality.

The Second Vatican Council's landmark document Gaudium et spes called Catholics to cultivate robust, mutually enriching dialogue with the modern world by attentively and discerningly listening to the "voices of our times." This distinctive new publication, the first of two volumes that explore sexual diversity and the Catholic Church, gathers an important set of these voices: the testimonies and reflections of Catholic and former Catholic LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) persons, their friends, family members, and those who teach and accompany them.

Drawn from a series of conferences held in autumn 2011 and offering a spectrum of professional, generational, and personal perspectives, the essays in Voices of Our Times suggest the breadth and complexity of Catholic experiences of and engagements with sexual diversity. Each writer locates her or his reflections in careful attention to how ways of experiencing sexuality and speaking about sexual diversity are embodied in and shaped by particular practices--familial, interpersonal, professional, ecclesial, cultural, and political.

Part I, "Practicing Love," introduces the voices of singles, families, couples, parents, and children who reflect on their experiences of sexual diversity in light of their experiences of Catholicism and of Catholics. Part II, "Practicing Church," offers the perspectives of clergy and lay ministers, casting light on what pastoral workers, Catholic and otherwise, encounter as they walk with people who are grappling with issues of faith and sexuality. In Part III, "Practicing Education," writers discuss their experiences with sexual diversity in Catholic educational settings as teachers, as students, and as witnesses to the lives, loves, and struggles of LGBTQ young adults. Finally, Part IV, "Practicing Belonging," spotlights contributions by authors who have struggled with their identities and place within and around the Catholic community.

Striving to acknowledge, honor, and respect the truth and value embodied in both LGBTQ persons' lives and in the Catholic tradition, this book provides a close-to-the-ground look at the state of the conversation about sexual diversity among contemporary Roman Catholics in the United States. Along with its companion volume, Inquiry, Thought, and Expression, Voices of Our Times represents a unique opportunity for readers inside and outside the Catholic community to engage in a conversation that is at once vibrant and complex, difficult and needed.

Review

"More than a Monologue is a powerful, long overdue, scandalous account of the fact that many GLBTQ persons are persons of faith, even intense Christian faith, who have been and continue to be rejected by officials of the Catholic church, causing great suffering to themselves and all those who love and respect them. We may hope that ending the silence on this issue will help priests, bishops and cardinals find the courage to end this persecution and acknowledge what many know from personal experience: that sexual identity and orientation were not among the instructions that Jesus the Christ left his followers, and do not predict personal righteousness."-Christine E. Gudorf, Florida International University

"The More Than in the title of these volumes indicates a commitment to move beyond the Monologue of ecclesiastical teaching on sexual diversity, and those who defend that teaching, and engage the voices and lived experiences of people."-Theological Studies

I've Met Him... And I like Him.
By Roy H. Williams
William O'Shaughnessy is everything we love about the Irish. He's irreverent, colorful, warm, and kind. This collection of radio editorials would be worth far more than its price if you were to receive only pages 61-64 for your money. (Think of the other 387 excellent pages as coming "at no extra charge.")
I was conducting a seminar in Manhattan for the great Joe Riley when I was introduced to Bill. I gave him a copy of my latest book and he gave me a copy of his, this (just released) Airwaves. I wasn't expecting much... but then I'm an idiot.
William O'Shaughnessy beggared America by limiting his radio commentary to Westchester County, New York. He should have been a network anchor.
Even though the book has a somewhat regional "New York" flavor, (I'm from Texas,) I liked it.
Bill! Write us another one!

A delightful "Who's who" in New York Radio and politics
By Dext Collins
Airwaves is O'Shaughnessy at hist best! From Mario Cuomo to Nelson Rockefeller, Airwaves gives a unique insight into some of the most fascinating figures of the Empire State and beyond. The candid conversations shed new light on the personal aspects of these rich characters who have helped shaped the state. O'Shaughnessy puts his guests at ease with a flair born from years of interviews and radio editorials that made the legendary broadcaster who he is today.

On the Anarchy of Poetry and Philosophy: A Guide for the Unruly (Perspectives in Continental Philosophy), by Gerald L. Bruns

Marcel Duchamp once asked whether it is possible to make something that is not a work of art. This question returns over and over in modernist culture, where there are no longer any authoritative criteria for what can be identified (or excluded) as a work of art. As William Carlos Williams says, A poem can be made of anything, even newspaper clippings. At this point, art turns into philosophy, all art is now conceptual art, and the manifesto becomes the distinctive genre of modernism. This book takes seriously this transformation of art into philosophy, focusing upon the systematic interest that so many European philosophers take in modernism. Among the philosophers Gerald Bruns discusses are Theodor W. Adorno, Maurice Blanchot, Arthur Danto, Stanley Cavell, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Franois Lyotard, Jean-Luc Nancy, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, and Emmanuel Levinas. As Bruns demonstrates, the difficulty of much modern and contemporary poetry can be summarized in the idea that a poem is made of words, not of any of the things that we use words to produce: meanings, concepts, propositions, narratives, or expressions of feeling. Many modernist poets have argued that in poetry language is no longer a form of mediation but a reality to be explored and experienced in its own right. But what sort of experience, philosophically, might this be? The problem of the materiality or hermetic character of poetic language inevitably leads to questions of how philosophy itself is to be written and what sort of communitydefines the work of art-or, for that matter, the work of philosophy. In this provocative study, Bruns answers that the culture of modernism is a kind of anarchist community, where the work of art is apt to be as much an event or experience-or, indeed, an alternative form of life-as a formal object. In modern writing, philosophy and poetry fold into one another. In this book, Bruns helps us to see how.

Miles Beyond : Electric Explorations of Miles Davis, 1967-1991, by Paul Tingen

"I was put here to play music, and interpret music. I might do a lot of other things, but the main thing that I love, that comes before everything, even breathing, is music." —Miles Davis to Ben Sidran in 1986 (The Miles Davis Companion, page 196)

A "must have" for every Miles Davis fan! Miles Beyond dares to venture where not other biographer has gone before. It offers the first in-depth exploration and analysis of Miles Davis's controversial electric period and the violent split of sentiment it produced within the jazz community.

One of the twentieth century's genuine musical geniuses, Miles Davis was a pioneer of such jazz styles as cool, hardbop, and the fusion of orchestral music and jazz in his work with arranger Gil Evans. Yet, when he boldly experimented with rock and African music in the late '60s, giving birth to "fusion" or "jazz-rock," Davis alienated many of his jazz fans. However, his electric explorations endured—and its impact on the music world is still being felt today.

Based on new research, as well as exclusive, first-hand recollections by over 50 musicians, partners, producers, and artists, Miles Beyond offers hundreds of never- before-revealed facts, insights, and revelations about Miles's remarkable artistic and personal life. Readers will discover a new perspective on Miles's working methods, as well as in in-depth, chronological understanding and analysis of the music produced from 1967 to 1991—a period that's been both neglected and misunderstood.

From Publishers Weekly
Easily one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz, Miles Davis is the archetypal jazz artist: a brilliant, elusive and enigmatic virtuoso. Since he arrived in New York in the late 1940s to work with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Davis has transformed the jazz idiom, initiating a series of new jazz movements beginning with the cool jazz period in the early 1950s and continuing with the release of the groundbreaking album Kind of Blue at the end of the decade. But the accolades from jazz critics and fans usually end with his late 1960s work; around that time, Miles abandoned conventional jazz practices to experiment with avant-garde improvisation, rock music and electric instruments, using elaborate, electronic postproduction techniques to hone his studio recordings. Those explorations became what is now known as "fusion." Music journalist Tingen meticulously dissects Miles's bands, sidemen and musical techniques, offering a wealth of candid firsthand commentary on Miles and his music from former sidemen like pianist Herbie Hancock, guitarist John McLaughlin, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and other musicians, as well as Miles's friends, lovers and ex-wives. Most importantly, Tingen examines Miles's always turbulent but wildly creative relationship with Teo Macero, his producer at Columbia Records. Tingen can sometimes be at once presumptuous and contradictory, summarily declaring, for instance, that a recording should have been radically trimmed even after repeatedly praising Miles's knack for minimalist masterpieces. Nevertheless, Tingen has written a lucid, detailed and illuminating study of a generally misunderstood, often critically dismissed period in the creative life of one of this country's greatest musical innovators. The book also contains an extensive musician list, discography, bibliography and sessionology. 10 b&w photos, not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Several fine Davis biographies have appeared over the past few years, mostly ignoring or downplaying much of the music discussed here by Tingen, a music journalist based in Scotland and California. Arguing that Davis succumbed to rock influences to the detriment of his jazz stylings, many critics and listeners have denigrated the trumpeter's electric recordings. Tingen traces these experiments using examples from 1967 onward, culminating in Davis's 1969 masterpiece, Bitches Brew. That recording opened floodgates of criticism, but it also attracted a number of new listeners who welcomed the later music of 1969-75, as well as the work following his 1981 return from retirement until his death in 1991. Tingen recognizes that Davis recorded some duds, but he convincingly shows that his subject was entirely serious about developing this style. Featuring firsthand accounts from more than 50 musicians, producers, and colleagues, including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter, this proves an invaluable work on an oft-neglected aspect of Davis's career. From Booklist
For the first 20 years of Miles Davis' prolific career in jazz, few critics could find anything negative to say about his music at all. But when Miles went electric in the late 1960s, the traditionalists turned on him with charges of "selling out" to commercial interests, record company politics, and worse. "The greatest example of self-violation in the history of art," wrote Stanley Crouch, quoting Nietzsche's assessment of Wagner. Tingen dismisses such critics and in this book explores the great musician's electric music on its own terms. Tingen's research is exhaustive. He interviews more than 50 of Miles' sidemen, producers, friends, and lovers from the period to convincingly make the case that Davis' recordings from this era are serious music. Not only did Miles discover and nurture a generation of musicians now at the forefront of jazz, Tingen argues, he took jazz improvisation to even more challenging, if sublime, levels. Above all, Tingen paints a sensitive portrait of a musician struggling with age and ill health and the demands of art and fame and desperate to return jazz to the center of African American youth culture. A must read for all true jazz fans. Ted Leventhal

Despite some flaws, this book raises the bar re: Davis bios!
By J. Lund
Much of MILES BEYOND contains perhaps the best explanations for Davis' artistry--as well as the contradictions and controversy surrounding Miles the human being--as anything I've ever read about him (and that covers a LOT of territory). Tingen effectively discusses Davis' Zen-like ability to maximize his sidepersons' potential, takes a praiseworthy stab at a psychological analysis (e.g., Miles' self-destructive streaks, his voilent tendencies), and does a heroic job of placing the 1973-75 group among Davis' best-ever units. Davis' music in general stands the test of time because he built on the past, not forgot it. Also, Miles' aesthetic successes came despite physical and psychological problems that seemingly left him devoid of inner peace when not creating music.
A key aspect of this book is that Tingen conducted fresh interviews with most of Davis' sidemen from his electric period. Thus there are a lot of fresh anecdotes and explanations particularly regarding the music itself. For instance, I've rarely read interviews with Davis' 1973-75 sidemen. Tingen talked in depth to all but one of them. Overall, Tingen explains with unique clarity Davis' gift for bringing his musical concepts to fruition, as well as Miles' ability to inspire his sidepersons to play "above what they know." Interviews with significant non-musical associates--specifically girlfriends--also help to provide as complete a picture as possible of Davis.
If the book has a flaw, it is the degree to which the author's views of Davis' recordings tend to move out of sync with his outstanding analysis of Davis' artistry in general--he leaves the impression that the "electric era" only sporadically lived up to what is in effect the author's own hype. Arguably he clings to some of the paradigms that he praises Davis for breaking (e.g., the overlength of many tracks). I even cringed when Tingen labeled the aesthetically-groundbreaking, politically-charged SUN CITY track "Let Me See Your I.D." (with a brilliant Gil Scott-Heron rap) as "boring funk-disco." And is DOO-BOP really "bubblegum teenage music?" I couldn't resist wondering if the overwrought electric-Miles hater Stanley Crouch hijacked the text in instances such as these.
Tingen claims that that his musical upbringing was on the avant edge of rock. I'm pondering whether or not that background is any more sufficient than that of a mainstream jazz fan to evaluate Davis' 1967-91 recordings. In my mind, to understand this era requires the ability to get swept away--intrinsically and extrinsically--by the deep grooves of the likes of funk legends James Brown, Sly Stone, and George Clinton. Furthermore, I think it requires open ears for such pop superstars like Madonna, Prince, and Michael Jackson (all of whom have drawn positive critical notices), such eclectic visionaries as Joni Mitchell, and also to have a discerning ear for styles that critics abhor (e.g., top-40 pop) as well as favor (reggae, alternative rock). I believe that Davis listened to and had an affinity for most or all of the above...and I am left with the impression that most or all of the above may be relatively alien to Tingen.
Despite these concerns, the bottom line is that the book's benefits FAR outweigh any problematic aspects. Tingen has done a remarkable job at getting "inside" Miles' musical mind. Most of the occasional shortcomings to Tingen's musical analysis are minimized by his often letting the musicians explain what is happening. No matter how well you think you know Miles, you'll know him better after reading this book, even if you find yourself having differences of opinion regarding some of the particulars.

Detailed overview of electric Miles
By A Customer
Tingen's great contribution is that he portrays Miles' early electric period as a continuation of the experimentation he was doing with the mid-60s quintet, along with pressure from his record company and his own desire to reach out to a broader audience. However, what he came up with was certainly not "commercial" or a "sellout" as some critics have asserted. Instead it was some of the most beautiful and challenging music of his career. But Tingen is also honest enough to point out that a lot of what Davis recorded after his "return" in 1981 was garbage. By 1985 Davis was just a showman resting on past laurels.
The sessionography and discography are excellent, especially Tingen's analysis of Teo Macero's groundbreaking use of editing. Through interviews with people like Lenny White and Billy Cobham, we get a great glimpse into the way Miles thought about music, the way he ran sessions, how he recorded, and how he interacted with his band - often they were downright afraid of him!
Some minor gripes: I just disagreed with some of his assessments of some Miles tracks over others, but that is a personal thing. The other drawback is Tingen's analysis of Miles' music through Buddhism and other exotic philosophies. Thankfully these are brief, but probably would have drawn some chuckles from the Man himself.

It's About That Time
By E. Cuddy
Paul Tingen's excellent new book is an in-depth treatment of Miles's "electric" period from 1967 to 1991. The timing of this publication couldn't have been better as Columbia/Legacy continues to issue/reissue important recordings from this era, including the recent "Live At Fillmore (It's About That Time)" and "The Complete In A Silent Way" box set.
The strength of the book lies in the fact that Tingen evaluates the electric Miles period on its own terms: an approach this much misunderstood and often maligned music truly deserves. Tingen backs up his thorough analysis with new interviews and first-person accounts from band members and other colleagues.
Tingen's book has set a new benchmark in writing on Miles Davis and jazz fusion. "Miles Beyond" offers both the casual listener and the fanatic fan much to learn about the electric years. And like all good music criticism, this book made me return to the source. I've been listening to albums like "Jack Johnson" and "Agharta" with fresh ears. An essential read!
