Thinking in Dark Times: Hannah Arendt on Ethics and Politics, by Jeffrey Katz, Thomas Keenan

Hannah Arendt is one of the most important political theorists of the twentieth century. In her works, she grappled with the dark events of that century, probing the nature of power, authority, and evil, and seeking to confront totalitarian horrors on their own terms. This book focuses on how, against the professionalized discourses of theory, Arendt insists on the greater political importance of the ordinary activity of thinking. Indeed, she argues that the activity of thinking is the only reliable protection against the horrors that buffeted the last century. Its essays explore and enact that activity, which Arendt calls the habit of erecting obstacles to oversimplifications, compromises, and conventions. Most of the essays were written for a conference at Bard College celebrating the 100th anniversary of Arendt's birth. Arendt left her personal library and literary effects to Bard, and she is buried in the Bard College cemetery. Material from the Bard archive-such as a postcard to Arendt from Walter Benjamin or her annotation in her copy of Machiavelli's The Prince-and images from her life are interspersed with the essays in this volume. The volume will offer provocations and insights to Arendt scholars, students discovering Arendt's work, and general readers attracted to Arendt's vision of the importance of thinking in our own dark times.

From Publishers Weekly
Artfully balancing conceptual precision and editorial care with a deep sense of urgency, this volume of essays on one of the 20th century's great theorists of totalitarianism and anti-Semitism offers a stimulating examination of Arendt's political and philosophical writings. The pieces analyze the sociopolitical ramifications of her life as well as more focused discussions of key topics in the social and the political realms. Cathy Caruth offers an exemplary reading of the relationship between the Pentagon Papers and Arendt's notion of the modern political lie that attempts not simply to cover over mistakes but to replace reality entirely by fabricating new histories. Uday Mehta gives a fascinating outline of Arendt's views on politics and terror, while Christopher Hitchens offers some brief, idiosyncratic reflections on anti-Semitism. Contributors return repeatedly to Arendt's 1963 coverage of the trial of Nazi official Adolf Eichmann. The essays lack a consensus on Arendt's notion of the banality of evil, but it is precisely the rich variety of interpretations together with a wonderful selection of images from her personal library that make the collection so compelling. Thinking Brings Light to Dark Times
By Angel Arias
The very title of this book summarizes its essence. Thinking in the spirit of Hannah Arendt is the task of this collection of essays, which confront the darkness that clouds ethics and politics in our times. Darkness for Arendt, as Roger Berkowitz explains in the introduction, does not refer to the atrocities, horrors, and challenges that the world has faced during the 20th Century, but the way in which these urgent and viral problems have been trivialized in the public sphere, how mere chatting obscures and hides their threat to our humanity. This darkness that clouds the public sphere is evident today, when economic and environmental disasters, and the calamities of war are concealed rather than revealed in vapid public debates in the mass media.

The book also discusses thinking, which is vital to understanding Arendt's philosophy. Thinking for Arendt is a particular activity -- one that she places on the highest pedestal. As Berkowitz notes, for Arendt "the only reliable source of light in these dark times is found in the activity of thinking" (p.5). While many philosophers and political thinkers encourage us to reason, Arendt draws on Heidegger, who in the What is Called Thinking (Was Heisst Denken), insightfully notes that in every epoch there are always thought provoking matters that provoke our thinking. However, he also insisted that the most thought provoking fact of his time was that people were not thinking. This reality of people thinking less and less still haunts us today. Arendt praises thinking above all, and not reason, because she argues that some of the most horrific crimes against humanity are done in the name of reason. In contrast, as the introduction elucidates, for Arendt, thinking enables us to hold a dialogue with oneself, that Socratic imperative, where instead of merely reasoning and understanding, one creates "the habit of erecting obstacles to oversimplifications, compromises and conventions" (8). Thinking for Arendt is what creates what she calls a space for judgment. This space for judgment is what enables us to evaluate and protest the infamous decisions of tyrannical regimes, irresponsible politicians and the more subtle but equally insidious and evil practices of "democratic" governments.

This collection of essays under the name Thinking in Dark Times not only vividly explores the power of Arendt's thinking and her judgments of ethical and political matters, but also demonstrates how her philosophy speaks to us today. For example, one of the most provocative arguments is formulated by Peg Birmingham, who points out that one of the major problems of politics today is the lack of clear boundaries between truth and lying (76). Lying to defend and preserve particular interests in politics is not just an act that leads to totalitarianism for Arendt, but also one that distorts and threatens reality itself.

These reflections teach us why the increasing lies and deceptions used by politicians today do not only pose a threat to our democratic state, but also why these deceptive acts by politicians drive citizens to withdraw from politics, to solitude and even to despair. However, as Arendt writes in The Human Condition, the withdrawal from politics and the public sphere is impossible because, "no human life, not even the life of the hermit in nature's wilderness, is possible without a world in which directly or indirectly testifies to the presence of other human beings." Politics requires the active participation of us all because our existence is inevitably conditioned by those around us. For Arendt, as the essays in this book repeatedly emphasize, it is specifically thinking that can bring light to the political sphere and make us less vulnerable to tyranny, lies, and political atrocities.

Important reading for understanding our world today
By Amanda Fitton
This remarkable volume of essays on a theme developed by Arendt is important reading today in our dark times. I also recommend Eichmann in Jerusalem, the book that identified "the banality of evil".

The Right to Narcissism: A Case for an Im-possible Self-love, by Pleshette DeArmitt

This book aims to wrest the concept of narcissism from its common and pejorative meanings egoism and vanity by revealing its complexity and importance. DeArmitt undertakes the work of rehabilitating "narcissism" by patiently reexamining the terms and figures that have been associated with it, especially in the writings of Rousseau, Kristeva, and Derrida.

These thinkers are known for incisively exposing a certain (traditional) narcissism that has been operative in Western thought and culture and for revealing the violence it has wrought from the dangers of amour-propre and the pathology of a collective "one's own" to the phantasm of the sovereign One. Nonetheless, each of these thinkers denounces the naive denunciation of "narcissism," as the dangers of a non-negotiation with narcissism are more perilous. By rethinking "narcissism" as a complex structure of self-relation through the Other, the book reveals the necessity of an im-possible self-love.

The arguments of each philosopher are beautifully laid out and interpreted richly and with brilliant insight ...
By Cynthia J. Willett
The book is an original, lucid, and powerful analysis of several layers of meaning in the major works of some of the central Francophone philosophers on the topic of self-love, or narcissism. The book examines the critique of narcissism that Rousseau, Derrida, and Kristeva leveled against conventional conceptions of the individual and group identity. They charge that national identity, social identity, and autonomy are all invested in narcissistic conceptions of the self. The book draws together the three views in a larger narrative arc that lends historical perspective and philosophical and scholarly depth. The arguments of each philosopher are beautifully laid out and interpreted richly and with brilliant insight into layers of meaning and implication. Most interesting, in an unexpected twist, the book demonstrates how each of these three thinkers lays the grounds for re-introducing narcissism as a “right to regard,” i.e., as what liberalism theorizes in terms of self-esteem and insists that we each merit as human beings. Part 1 culminates in a discussion of Rousseau’s notion of pity, or sympathy, which transfers beyond the limits of one’s natural self-love to care for the suffering of others who are similar to oneself, and then in turn values self-love as a virtue. This historical background to contemporary debates is valuable for the overall project of the book, bit also for a constant but neglected theme of the contemporary thinkers that was central in Rousseau’s time. Part 2 continues the argument now focused on Kristeva’s attempt to develop the parameters for a discourse on love. This discourse, it is argued, requires that the individual learn first self-love and the ideals that this self-love sustains. This part of the book takes up and expands significantly beyond existing scholarship on Kristeva, focusing on childhood development and the role of identification, language, and images play in this process. The child emerges only after separation that leaves a feeling of emptiness even as love of others also gives the child a sense of identity. The loved one always reflects some narcissistic identification with an ideal that is projected outward beyond the self. There are no postmodern maps or ideals for the self, but only therapies that encourage identification and love for self and others. Part 3 shifts to Derrida, who teases out the aporias of narcissism and love. This shift too is unexpected and surprisingly rich, bringing the book to a final consideration of the limits of ideals, and the importance of disruptive gestures but also some strong sense of self-worth as a key to love and self. This is an important book for philosophical psychology and ethics.

brilliantly engaging with Kristeva’s writing on nationalism
By Kelly Oliver
Deftly working at the intersection of philosophy, psychoanalysis, and literature, in her new book, The Right to Narcissism: A Case for an Im-possible Self-Love (Fordham 2013), DeArmitt makes a case for self-love, or narcissism. With subtle and attentive readings of Rousseau, Kristeva and Derrida, DeArmitt shows the necessity for rethinking narcissism as an ethics of otherness. She suggests that in order to think through self-other relations—or any human relations—we need a robust theory of self-relation. Narcissism has a “bad rap”; but DeArmitt powerfully reclaims it for a positive theory of subjectivity and for ethics. Each chapter presents an original and provocative interpretation of the place and theory of narcissism in the writings of a French philosopher. Starting with Rousseau, DeArmitt shows how the question of man’s self regard or self-love is at the heart of Rousseau’s philosophy, particularly his remarks about the history of civilization, man’s relation to animals, and the relationship between nature and culture. But, even in Rousseau’ writings, this seemingly arrogant self-regard is haunted by otherness and others. In chapter two, brilliantly engaging with Kristeva’s writing on nationalism, narcissism, and difference, again DeArmitt shows how Kristeva cannot think self-love without otherness and difference. In the final chapter, DeArmitt skillfully elaborates Derrida’s claim that we must rehabilitate narcissism if we are to have any hope of regard for others. Here, DeArmitt makes her most significant contribution to an ethics of difference with its profound political implications by proposing a positive self-love as the first step towards loving others.

Italoamericana: The Literature of the Great Migration, 1880-1943From Fordham University Press

The highly-anticipated first English-language edition of the monumental critical anthology of writings from the golden age of the Italian disapora in America is now available.

To appreciate the life of the Italian immigrant enclave from the great heart of the Italian migration to its settlement in America requires that one come to know how these immigrants saw their communities as colonies of the mother country. Edited with extraordinary skill, Italoamericana: The Literature of the Great Migration, 1880-1943 brings to an English-speaking audience a definitive collection of classic writings on, about, and from the formative years of the Italian-American experience.

Originally published in Italian, this landmark collection of translated writings establishes a rich, diverse, and mature sense of Italian-American life by allowing readers to see American society through the eyes of Italian-speaking immigrants. Filled with the voices from the first generation of Italian-American life, the book presents a unique treasury of long-inaccessible writing that embodies a literary canon for Italian-American culture--poetry, drama, journalism, political advocacy, history, memoir, biography, and story--the greater part of which has never before been translated.

Italoamericana introduces a new generation of readers to the "Black Hand" and the organized crime of the 1920s, the incredible "pulp" novels by Bernardino Ciambelli, Paolo Pallavicini, Italo Stanco, Corrado Altavilla, the exhilarating "macchiette" by Eduardo Migliaccio (Farfariello) and Tony Ferrazzano, the comedies by Giovanni De Rosalia, Riccardo Cordiferro's dramas and poems, the poetry of Fanny Vanzi-Mussini and Eduardo Migliaccio.

Edited by a leading journalist and scholar, Italoamericana introduces an important but little-known, largely inaccessible Italian-language literary heritage that defined the Italian-American experience. Organized into five sections--"Annals of the Great Exodus," "Colonial Chronicles," "On Stage (and Off-Stage)," "Anarchists, Socialist, Fascists, Anti-Fascists," and "Apocalyptic Integrated / Integrated Apocalyptic Intellectuals"--the volume distinguishes a literary, cultural, and intellectual history that engages the reader in all sorts of archaeological and genealogical work.

Review

"Robert Viscusi's American edition of Francesco Durante's anthology fills an enormous gap in Italian and Italian American studies. This is the first English-language edition of a collection of journalistic, literary and critical texts to offer deep and sweeping insight into the social lives and psychology of Italian immigrants up to the watershed years of World War II."-George Guida, New York City College of Technology, The City University of New York and President of the Italian American Studies Association

"Italoamericana is a supreme work of scholarship-an archive unto itself in the form of a meticulously researched and scrupulously glossed and documented historical anthology of the literary creation of the Italian migration."-Pellegrino D'Acierno, Hofstra University

"A sophisticated, critical look at the writings of Italian immigrants to America across all genres. . . This volume is a major work and forms an invaluable testament to a forgotten era of Italian literary history in the new world. . . A massive work of extraordinary power, that while scholarly and comprehensive, will have wide appeal."--Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

" . . . [A] kaleidoscopic, thousand-page anthology of memoirs, poetry, political commentary and newspaper excerpts . . ."--Sam Roberts, The New York Times

"This volume is a comprehensive compilation of writings by Italian American authors. First published in Italy, edited by journalist and literary scholar Durante, the anthology covers the mass migration of Italians to the United States up to World War II. . . VERDICT Highly recommended for anyone interested in immigrant literature and an essential purchase for any collection of Italian American literature and culture."--Morris Hounion, New York City College of Technology, Brooklyn, Library Journal

"This massive anthology rings out with the voices of legions of Italians and Italian Americans over six decades. From it flows their poetry, drama, stories, memories, novels, speeches, oral histories and more."--Doce Italiana

"In its girth, the volume is a metaphorical feast, suggesting both the collective heft of the rediscovered output and the unique works still waiting to be discovered. . . highly recommended." -Choice

"It is not an exaggeration to characterize this work as monumental, not only for the large number of original sources it includes in its nearly one thousand pages but also for its variety and organization." -Italian American Review

"Italoamericana spotlights, through a broad variety of literary work, the distinct culture and history of Italian Americans, while showing the universality of the immigrant story. It should find a place in every Italian American household, as a touchstone to a reality few of us know anything about."-Feile-Festa

Italoamericana Vol. II - Finally in English: the Italian migration in the words of those who lived it. - a great read
By Richard Mattiaccio
This English rendition of Volume II of Francesco Durante's extraordinary anthology of the writings of the Italians in America from the 1880's to World War II is a revelation to anyone interested in the language, intellectual life, literature, performance culture and social perspectives of the people of the "Italian colony" during its sudden expansion. The book also happens to be fun to read: sometimes tragic, sometimes comic, sometimes ironic, never dull. The size of the volume might be a little off-putting to the casual reader, but it can and should be read in discrete, relatively brief sittings, author by author. Durante's introduction of each author places the writings in context and brings them and the Italian colony to life. Shouts of "Bravi" are due for the publisher, the editors and translators who have made available in modern yet faithful English the idiosyncratic Italian of the original texts. Italoamericana Volume II stands out as an important contribution to a more nuanced understanding of the Italian immigrant experience in the United States. It might well also provide insights into immigration in more general terms. Anyone who starts reading this book will wonder when we can have a translation of Volume I, the writings of Italians in America from the beginnings of the United States until the period covered by this volume. Ben venga!

A great source for the curious but definitely "dry" unless you ...
By Ms Marilyn L. Shaw Esq.
If you are of Italian descent, this book will answer/explain a whole lot of questions and mysteries you may have grown up with, such as, why we knew so little about our heritage, were not taught the language, what experiences our ancestors were silent about, etc. The book is quite a find as it was written in Italian by Italian authors who read many original sources, including newspapers written in the States addressed to the immigrant community. A great source for the curious but definitely "dry" unless you are interested in understanding the Italian immigrant experience which our ancestors never talked about.

From the Back Cover
Impressionism - its techniques as well as its practitioners, past and present - continues to excite the passion of artists and art enthusiasts alike. From the plein-air landscapes first painted near the forests of Barbizon outside Paris, through the fields of Givemy that Monet immortalized, to the art of American expatriates such as John Singer Sargent and the European-trained American nativists like William Merritt Chase, the influence of impressionism on American art has had a long and distinguished history. Through artistic principles developed by Charles Hawthorne, an influential American impressionist and educator who studied with Chase and founded The Cape Cod School of Art, the rich legacy of the impressionist tradition was passed on to several generations of twentieth-century American artists. In Painting the Impressionist Landscape, Lois Griffel, the current director of The Cape Cod School of Art and an accomplished artist in her own right, explores and illustrates Hawthorne's philosophy and theories about color and light, enabling artists at every level of ability and experience to apply his insights to their own work. The first part of the book, "Fundamentals of Color and Light", elaborates on the circumstances and individuals that contributed to the development of impressionism. The author then outlines the progression of the study of color and light that is covered in detail later in the book, from simple block studies - the most effective way to learn to use pure color to express the effects and quality of light - through the more complex rounded forms in still lifes and portraits, to the most challenging forms intrinsic to landscape. Griffel then discusses the essentialsof color - its terms, the impressionist palette, and color mixing - as well as how established color theory expresses and influences the impressionist approach. The second part of the book, "Impressionism in Practice", takes readers through a series of explorations that guides them toward a mastery of the impressionist landscape. Griffel begins by itemizing the materials that artists need to prepare for painting outdoors and describing how the light of the setting affects color within the contexts of a composition. The detailed chapters on the studies - from sunny day and cloudy day blocks, to still lifes and portraits, culminating in landscapes - are all structured to lead readers through each step, enabling them first to evaluate, then eventually realize in their own painting, Hawthorne's enlightening perceptions about capturing the radiance of nature's light in art. Beautifully illustrated with the art of the author, her colleagues at the artist's colony in Provincetown, and selections by Monet, Sargent, and Hawthorne himself, Painting the Impressionist Landscape is a lively and informative guide to expressing light as color in art.

About the Author
Lois Griffel’s lifelong interest in art began at the age of five, when she first entertained neighborhood children with her drawings and paintings. She discovered early in her career that she enjoyed teaching and attended Southern Connecticut State College in order to receive her bachelor of science degree in education. Later, while making her living as a portrait painter, she enrolled at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York, where she studied with many outstanding artists, including Everett Raymond Kinstler and Harvey Dinnerstein. Her introduction in the early 1970s to Henry Hensche, Charles Hawthorne’s protégé, led to her in-depth study and practice of the impressionist theory of painting. As director and instructor at The Cape Cod School of Art, it gives her great joy to combine her loves of teaching and painting, and to share them with enthusiastic students. Ms. Griffel has had a number of one-person exhibitions throughout New England, and has been included in invitational exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Carmel, California. She holds workshops in landscape, portrait, and figure painting throughout the northeast.

sells the sizzle; not the steak
By J. Janssen
I hate writing negative reviews and I'm pretty sure people hate to read them, but Griffel's book is a proverbial "tale of two cities". On one hand she includes an abundance of atmospheric palette knife paintings and on the other hand her text deals with subjective issues and questionable exercises more appropriately found in a basic painting book. There is little, if any, connection between the examples and her text. Potential customers are likely to purchase the book based upon the paintings thinking there will be at least a modicum of technique or demonstration as to how they were done; they will be disappointed.

To be fair the actual title of the book after the colon is "Lessons in Interpreting Light and Color", and the book does talk about light and color. However, a lesson is supposed to teach something and there are precious few conclusions offered up by the author. She relies primarily on block studies which are simply value/temperature exercises that have no special relevance to the impressionist landscape any more than they might have to still life or portraiture. Block studies are a traditional teaching tool employed by the academic art community going back to the 19th century. Additionally, the author uses an extended palette which, in my opinion, is an anathema to the Impressionists' approach. There's not much meat here and what there is has very little to do with landscape painting. If you want to acquire the book for examples of a particular style, then it might be worth the expense and does provide useful models to emulate in your own work. But, if you want a treatise on how and why she painted the way she did, it just isn't here. At one time Ms. Griffel was affiliated with the Cape Cod School of Art* and perhaps (and this is a big perhaps) one could have enrolled to learn her technique.

I can recommend five contemporary books in lieu of this one that, while not specific to impressionism, can teach you more about landscape painting in a few hours than this one could in a lifetime. I would suggest "Landscape Painting" by Mitchell Abala, "Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner" by Steve Allrich, "Landscape" by Richard McDaniel, "Landscape Painting Inside and Out" by Kevin Macpherson, or "The Painterly Approach" by Bob Rohm. All have an instructional orientation, provide numerous demos, and advocate a basic palette. While they are in many ways different, they're compatible and leave the reader with a strong sense of the fundamentals in approaching a landscape project. In a word they're complimentary rather than contradictory and, in my opinion, each represents a significant step up from the material contained in this book.

* The Cape Cod School of Art had a long and rich history as an art colony and teaching academy going back to 1899 when it was founded by Charles Hawthorne. Upon his death in 1930 a student, Henry Hensche, acquired the site, re-named it "The Cape School of Art in Provincetown", and operated it as an art training center until 1987 when he sold the buildings to Lois Griffel who subsequently re-opened the center under it's original name. However, the facilities soon fell into disrepair and Griffel sold the structures and closed the center in 1993. Interested groups have tried to reestablish the school over the years, but have thus far failed. There was some hope that a former student group was being formed and planned on offering some type of curriculum in 2011, but I can find no record of that plan succeeding. It's my understanding that Griffel had no involvement with the school after 1993 and currently conducts workshops at various locations.

Seeing the Light
By Bernice Winston
Any painter who wishes to see the light through the eyes of the impressionist masters will most certainly want to purchase this outstanding book. Written by Lois Griffel, Director of the Cape Cod School of Art, founded by Charles Hawthorne and continued by his disciple, Henry Hensche, PAINTING THE IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE will gratify both the beginner and the advanced student. In her book, Lois Griffel, herself a master teacher, provides a theoretical framework for simple, practical exercises designed to develop in the student an understanding of how light affects the world of color around him. Of special interest are the block studies from where the artist begins his journey, first observing the effects of light on simple rectangular forms on sunny and cloudy days; then on to the rounded half tones of still life; on to the nuances of the portrait; and, finally, to painting out of doors where the artist is gradually empowered to see and understand the dazzling effects of light on the landscape. PAINTING THE IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE is an outstanding book, profusely illustrated with Lois Griffel's own beautiful work as well as the work of other fine painters of this school. I treasure this book and am grateful to Lois Griffel for having written it. Bernice Ruth Winston

Great instruction for the impressionistic painter
By A Customer
Griffel's book has opened up a new world of painting for me. Returning from a trip to Paris I was inspired by the works of the great French impressionists and wanted to learn the basics of their style of painting. This book is a two part course in painting - the first section covers basic color theory and the second walks you through step-by-step excersises to learn to apply the techniques. My landscapes have taken on a whole new look and I'm looking forward to a workshop with Griffel in the coming year.

great for beginners!
By A Customer
If you are looking for an easy and non-specific drawing book about animals, this is the one. It has a wide range of them, from birds to insects, from wild felines to cute pets and farm animals. I would say this book is a great starting point for anyone who is interested in drawing but doesn't know any techniques or doesn't feel capable - yet - of drawing animals instantly. It is perfect for beginners because it does not use hard techniques, such as shading, and with it you are able to discover which kinds of animals you would like to draw more - and then you can go for "Draw 50 Birds" or "Draw 50 Cats", which are two examples that, comparing to this one, are more specific and therefore more challenging books. "Draw 50 Animals" uses the step-by-step method and is very easy to follow. You start with simple lines and shapes, and little by little you turn them into the animal which you thought you would never be able to draw. The result is really amazing, and a great self-esteem increaser for beginners (at least for me it was!). This book is sure to please anyone who uses it and anyone who sees the result of using it!

100% satisfaction
By SusieQ
I purchased this book for a 13-year-old who likes animals and who previously took a vague interest in drawing. In the month since I presented it, not a week has gone by but she's calling me over to see the drawings she's creating with the help of this book. The book's teaching method is very easy to understand, and putting it together with a sketch pad and the proper pencils made it a great gift; not to mention that the child's sketches are greatly improved. And even more importantly, she's learning and enjoying something NOT related to a computer; an ipod, or a television set. Even if she stops drawing tomorrow, I would still feel this book was a good investment.

Good for anyone!
By Esther Rodriguez
I bought this book for my special needs daughter in the hope that it would introduce her in the art of drawing and help her to easily understand each step in drawing animals. And it did! A few days ago she surprised me by drawing a cat out of apples. The book also helped her in focusing on details and to understand proportions. I highly recommend the book.

Confidentiality and Its Discontents: Dilemmas of Privacy in Psychotherapy (Psychoanalytic Interventions), by Paul Mosher, Jeffrey Berman

Freud promised his patients absolute confidentiality, regardless of what they revealed, but privacy in psychotherapy began to erode a half-century ago. Psychotherapists now seem to serve as "double agents" with a dual and often conflicting allegiance to patient and society. Some therapists even go so far as to issue Miranda-type warnings, advising patients that what they say in therapy may be used against them.

Confidentiality and Its Discontents explores the human stories arising from this loss of confidentiality in psychotherapy. Addressing different types of psychotherapy breaches, Mosher and Berman begin with the the story of novelist Philip Roth, who was horrified when he learned that his psychoanalyst had written a thinly veiled case study about him. Other breaches of privacy occur when the so-called duty to protect compels a therapist to break confidentiality by contacting the police. Every psychotherapist has heard about "Tarasoff," but few know the details of this story of fatal attraction. Nor are most readers familiar with the Jaffee case, which established psychotherapist-patient privilege in the federal courts. Similiarly, the story of Robert Bierenbaum, a New York surgeon who was brought to justice fifteen years after he brutally murdered his wife, reveals how privileged communication became established in a state court. Meanwhile, the story of New York Chief Judge Sol Wachtler, convicted of harassing a former lover and her daughter, shows how the fear of the loss of confidentiality may prevent a person from seeking treatment, with potentially disastrous results.

While affirming the importance of the psychotherapist-patient privilege, Confidentiality and Its Discontents focuses on both the inner and outer stories of the characters involved in noteworthy psychotherapy breaches and the ways in which psychiatry and the law can complement but sometimes clash with each other.

Review

"Confidentiality and Its Discontents provides careful descriptions and discussions of a range of privacy cases that demonstrate the rapidly-escalating problems associated with the supposed confidentiality of the psychotherapeutic relationship. Confidentiality and Its Discontents will be a useful and unique resource to many mental health training programs."--Paul Brinich, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"Written by two of the leading individuals in the field, Confidentiality and Its Discontents is a clearly readable and well-argued account of the debates about confidentiality in psychiatry and psychoanalysis. The book is extremely well presented and adds immeasurably to the literature on the topic."--Sander Gilman, Emory University
