It attempts to triangulate philosophical and theoretical reflections on animality and humanity with theological reflections on divinity. If the animal human distinction is being rethought and retheorized as never before, then the animal human divine distinctions need to be rethought, retheorized, and retheologized along with it. This is the task that the multidisciplinary team of theologians, biblical scholars, philosophers, and historians assembled in this volume collectively undertakes. They do so frequently with recourse to Derrida's animal philosophy and also with recourse to an eclectic range of other relevant thinkers, such as Haraway, Giorgio Agamben, Emmanuel Levinas, Gloria Anzaldua, Helene Cixous, A. N. Whitehead, and Lynn White Jr.

The result is a volume that will be essential reading for religious studies audiences interested in ecological issues, animality studies, and posthumanism, as well as for animality studies audiences interested in how constructions of the divine have informed constructions of the nonhuman animal through history.

There are few Presidents of the United States whose historical image has changed more frequently than that of Andrew Johnson. In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War and Reconstruction, he was considered inept and stubborn. After some time, however, Reconstruction was no longer seen as a holy crusade, and Johnson's reputation began to improve. By the 1920's, Johnson had become a great hero who had courageously defended the Constitution against unprincipled radicals. But as circumstances changed again and racial problems were once more weighing upon America's conscience, the seventeenth President's achievements began to appear more questionable. Perhaps he had not been so admirable after all; perhaps his stubborn resistance to radical demands for black suffrage merited disapprobation rather than praise. His portrait was tarnished a second time. Not only was he now labeled a racist, but an inept politician as well.

In Impeachment of a President: Andrew Johnson, the Blacks, and Reconstruction, Trefousse paints a portrait of Johnson as a man who was honest, stubborn, and certain of the justice of his cause. Trefousse argues that Johnson was not the man to inch from the implications of decisions which might interfere temporarily with his long-range aims. Each text is read in the light of the autobiographical tradition begun by St. Augustine's Confessions, but with an emphasis on distinctively modern and post-modern transformations of the self-writing genre. Jefferson, a Tuskegee Airman who was shot down during World War II and held in a German prison camp for nine months, recalls better treatment as a prisoner of war than as a black citizen in the U.S. He had been fascinated with airplanes since his childhood in Detroit, where he was born into a long line of clergymen and educators, who nonetheless suffered the racial indignities of the time. Jefferson went on to become a chemist when the chance to join the 332nd Fighter Group captured his imagination. He piloted a Red-Tail Angel, one of the planes assigned to protect bombers' crews. On his eighteenth mission, he was shot down over southern France and taken to Stalag Luft III, a camp primarily for captured British and American Air Force officers. While at the camp, he began recording observations of the cold, occasional shootings of prisoners, but mostly boredom and hunger. Later, he recorded his impressions of the ignominious welcome home reserved for black soldiers. Photographs and Jefferson's drawings during his imprisonment add to the fascination of this memoir. Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, (USAF, Ret.) has degrees from Clark College and Wayne State University. He won numerous citations and remains active in Veterans' and Tuskegee Airmen organizations. He served in Michigan public schools for thirty years as a teacher and administrator, and lives in outside Detroit in Southfield.

LEWIS H.CARLSON is co-author of Life behindBarbed Wire: The World War II Photographs ofPrisoner of War Angelo M. Spinelli (Fordham).

Among the many groups to whom we owe more than we can ever repay there is the Tuskegee Airmen. Determined to become Army Air Crop pilots and to fight for America, these men enlisted in the army. In spite of the determination of some to make them fail, they didn't. In spite of a 'quota' as to how many would be allowed to graduate (not discovered until many years later) some 900 made it through the system. Most became fighter pilots, after all if they flew bombers they might have had white crewmen under them and in those days that just wouldn't do.

Lt. Jefferson made it through. And eventually he flew with the famous 332nd, the Red Tails. Most of the missions of the 332nd were to escort bombers. NO Bombers were ever lost to Enemy Aircraft while being escorted by the 332nd.

On his 19th mission Lt. Jefferson was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. He spent the next nine months in a German POW camp. When finally returned to the United States after being liberated he walked off the ship to be told, "Whites to the right, niggers to the left."

Red Tail Captured

A few years ago on a visit to Honolulu, I met the author of this book. We chatted briefly about his war years and mine (Vietnam). On returning home, I purchased this book on Amazon. It was most fascinating as a personal history, but also a history of WWII. Any reader might be interested in the growth of an American from childhood to adulthood with many adventures which not many of us go through. We all have our own adventures, of course. This book expands our horizons. It is easy to read and easier to thank this gentleman for his part in making the country all that it could and should be.

Excellent Memoir of a Distinguished WWII Veteran

Col. Jefferson has written an excellent personal memoir that is a unique addition to the literature of those who fought and served America so well in World War II and after. I bought the book after hearing the author speak (to a standing ovation) and was pleased to get the additional well written and presented detail of his experiences. His numerous drawings of the places he served, especially the POW camp, helped transport the reader to a better understanding than from merely a written description.

The purpose of the present study is to undertake a confrontation of the thought of Martin Heidegger and Thomas Aquinas on the question of Being and the problem of metaphysics. Now, a 'confrontation' which does no more than draw up a catalogue of common traits and points of difference is no more than a curiosity, an idle comparison which bears no fruit.

Glimpse at a thinker (Caputo) in development

Although he doesn't confess to this in the book, the transition from Aquinas to Heidegger was a major step in the development of Caputo's thinking, eventually leading him to become one of the foremost Derrida scholars in the US. If you are familiar with one of these two figures and are interested in the other, I would highly recommend this book. Caputo finds deep links between the two, showing the unrecognized mystical side of Aquinas (who is so often read as staunchly dogmatic) and building upon his previous work on the mystical elements of Heidegger's thought.

A Sympathetic Treatment of Two Thinkers

Caputo masterfully explains the fundamental perspectives of both Aquinas and Heidegger. As a follower of Aquinas, I found his exposition of Aquinas accurate and thorough. Before reading his book, I knew nothing about Heidegger, but I feel that now I have some sort of handle on his thought. Caputo is extraordinarily fair to both philosophers, granting both of them as much latitude as he deems viable. Only in one place does he take serious issue with Heidegger, when he wonders whether Heidegger's notion of being as "emergence into unconcealment" (or the event of appropriation and sending) finitizes or immanentizes God. This by itself, however, is a telling admission of the ultimate deficiency of Heidegger's notion of "Being". I would definitely recommend this book for a comparative study of both men. On the other hand, Sacchi's "Apocalypse of Being" offers a more polemical critique of Heidegger than Caputo's book, and may be more satisfying to someone (like myself) having a Thomistic view on reality.

Scholarly and readable, but ultimately misses the point.

Caputo's book is the first tolerable exposition of Heidegger that I have come across. That may in part be due to the fact that I am a Thomist, but a good part of it stems from Heidegger's obscurity and verbosity. It must be credited to Caputo that he has grasped Heidegger well enough to introduce his thought to someone with no previous knowledge of his philosophy. He also has an adequate understanding of Aquinas and the centrality of the act-of-being (esse) in the latter's philosophy. The historical information about Heidegger's early development and relation to scholasticism was enlightening and adequately sets the stage for the confrontation that Caputo wishes to stage.
The author has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that if Heidegger's critique is accepted, that Aquinas' philosophy does not answer to it. The oblivion of Being in Heidegger's sense is definitely not the oblivion of the act-of-being (esse) in Etienne Gilson's sense. Where the book is very weak, however is in refuting the counterclaim of Lotz that it is Heidegger who has fallen short of Aquinas and not vice-versa. Up to this point, Caputo faces the issues squarely, but here he turns away. Either he seems not to understand the counter-charge, which is difficult to believe after his fine exposition of thomistic metaphysics, or he simply has his heart set on the postmodern path. He cannot seem to muster much more than to fall back on stock terms, such as "radicality" of Heidegger's critique. Yes, radical it is, but true?
Caputo's final effort to discern a Heideggerian mysticism underneath Aquinas' metaphysics really is almost not worth commenting upon. To suggest that Aquinas' mystical experiences involved this kind of gnostic and historicist spirituality is absurd, bordering on the scandalous.
Finally, while the book is generally well balanced in tone, the author sometimes takes up a rather defensive and patronizing posture towards Aquinas when Heidegger's critique is on the rocks.
All in all, I got something out of this book, at least the first half. But it has the weaknesses I mentioned.
