A comparison of Heigegger's later thought to Meister Eckhart

John Caputo investigates the claim of many modern philosphers
that Heidegger became a mystic in the latter part of his life.
Caputo performs a careful analysis of this claim by looking
at the writings of Heidegger as they relate to a true German
mystic, Meister Eckhart. Does Heidegger's relationship
between being and Being equate to Eckhart's soul and God?
Does his use of "Gelassenheit", a term of Eckhart's meaning
detachment, show a common belief? Caputo's book works on
many levels. It brings together two of the great "book ends"
of Germany philosophy, spanning the 14th to 20th centuries.
And, just as Caputo does a wonderful job of conveying Heidegger's
thought, so, too, he captures the mysticism of Eckhart. It
was this which actually appealed to me more, and I believe
the book can be an excellent introduction into the thinking
of one of the greatest mystics of all time -- Eckhart.

Susannah Radstone is Reader in Cultural Theory in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of East London. Bill Schwarz teaches in the School of English and Drama, Queen Mary, University of London. The first volume of his Memories of Empire is due out from Oxford University Press shortly. In 1937, Virginia Roush, a strong-minded young woman from St. Petersburg, Florida, married a Frenchman, becoming Virginia d'Albert-Lake, and moved to Paris. During the war, she kept a diary, including almost larkish reports of her Resistance work. Part of an escape line that smuggled downed Allied airmen out of the country, she took them on secret sightseeing tours of Paris. In June, 1944, she was arrested by the Germans and sent to a sequence of concentration camps that included three spells in Ravensbrück. (The third time she was transferred from Ravensbrück, she weighed seventy-six pounds.) This book, comprising a diary written before her capture and a memoir written after her liberation, is an indelible portrait of extraordinary strength of character. In the diary she seems naïve and spirited; in the memoir she is sombre, reflective, and attentive to every detail.

Her work as an American woman in the French Resistance saving American airmen's lives led to her winning France's highest decoration, the Legion d'Honneur. But the greatest honor for her was having the love of her husband Phillippe d'Albert-Lake, who was the reason she stayed in France when she could have retreated to the safety of the United States as World War II loomed on the horizon. I really did enjoy this book

I really did enjoy this book; it was an eye opener, as this lady, an American, married to a Frenchman, really helped American airmen who were shot down and trying to get back to England; she paid a terrible price for her dedication to the Allied cause!!!

There were only a few Americans in the French Resistance: Mme d'Albert-Lake was one and in this intelligent book shows that she has a good memory and a clear expository style --- and a sense of humor as well. Carefully annotated. Informative both on the Resistance and on the French scene before and during World War II.

About the Author

LEE J. AMES began his career at Walt Disney Studios and taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and at Dowling College on Long Island. He directed his own advertising agency and has illustrated over 150 books, ranging from preschool picture books to postgraduate texts. A prolific author of more than 30 Draw 50 books, Lee Ames died at the age of 90 in June 2011.

MIRACLE WORKER!

First off, let me start by saying, that when it comes to me drawing living creatures (birds, humans etc.), most of my drawings look like a 7 year old drew them. Which is why i was amazed when the elephant i drew turned out looking exactly like the picture- maybe even better! Since then, i've picked up techniques such as shading and certain lines to draw for different things, just from drawing the animals. I was skeptical at first because each animal only gets one page explanation of how to draw it, but one page is really all you need if you follow along each step. It took me about 20 minutes to draw a duckling nicely; probably 20-60 min. for animals. Overall GREAT BOOK and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Good book for older kids/teens who want advance and have the patience to do so.

I bought this for my 10 year old girl who's a future vet/zoologist. It's has really nice designs, with progressive steps to start with leading through 6-8 steps to the final one. The one thing I wish was that it had an age range or skill recommendation as it might be frustrating for someone who has minimal drawing experience. The final images are well shaded and detailed, which can be complex for younger kids, but overall I think it does a good job in teaching structural steps to creating an image.

As the book recommends, I'll definitely have to go out and get quality drafting paper, pencils, and erasers, as well as encourage her to not be frustrated if not mimicking the authors final images. It's all a step by step process..

"To embarrass" is literally to "embar": to put up a barrier or deny access. The bar of embarrassment may be raised by unpleasant experiences. It may also be raised when people are denied access to things, persons, and states of being they desire or to which they feel entitled.

The Venetian plays represent embarrassment not merely as a condition but as a weapon and as the wound the weapon inflicts. Characters in The Merchant of Venice and Othello devote their energies to embarrassing one another. But even when the weapon is sheathed, it makes its presence felt, as when Desdemona means to praise Othello and express her love for him: "I saw Othello's visage in his mind" (1.3.253). This suggests, among other things, that she didn't see it in his face.

Not For Beginners

This book is definitely not for a beginning watercolorist and I don't think the author and publishers intended it to be. If you are just beginning to paint in watercolor in a realistic style I recommend starting with books aimed for beginners first. That said, for high-intermediate to advanced watercolorists who want to learn new ways to add life to their paintings this is one of the best books out there using the pouring process as the primary means vs. painting with a brush. That doesn't mean Ms. Engle doesn't use brushes, it's just that they are only one of several techniques at her disposal.
I got this book after having read Creative Discoveries in Watermedia. So I understand why the title says 'Experimental Techniques for Achieving Realistic Effects'. Many of the same techniques from the Creative Discoveries book are used here as well. Everything from squirt bottles to pouring the paints and tipping the board to let the paint run where it will to textural techniqes for added interest. All the chapters introduce fun methods for paiting but I'm glad design (aka composition) has a chapter of its own. All the techniques in the world won't save a painting with a poor design (that's when you just crop it and make it a mixed media experimental painting!) :)
My favorite chapter is the last one. It discusses experimental techiques, mediums, methods, etc. This is the only watercolor book I've ever seen that mentions W&N's Aquapasto medium, a product I love for adding texture elements to some of my more experimental paintings. If you're an intermediate to advanced watercolorist looking for new ideas you'll find plenty of them here.

Experimental Techniques in watercolor by Nita Engle

This is a must have book for the library of any watercolor artist! Nita Engle has been in the business for years and has the added advantage of being a very popular workshop teacher. If you can't attend her workshop, buy this book! I am a professional portrait artist whose husband is also an artist specializing in watercolors. Don't look for portraits in this book-look for some of the most amazing watercolor landscapes to be found in any book! This lady explains with no holds barred! Everything is detailed with a wonderful carefree banter. She is comfortable in her medium and her attitude. The many photos are outstanding! We were captivated by this book as there are too many wishy washy watercolor books out there with no real subject matter. We are quite critical of "how to" books that don't have any "how to" in them. If you are serious about watercolor and are ready for some major changes, then realize that this book won't sit on your shelf. You will be immediately rewarded with that artistic excitement that comes with the discovery of a new method or skill in which to energize your work! This is a gem and we speak from our experiences of years of making a living as artists!

excellant book for experienced watercolor painters

No matter what anybody says, watercolor painting is difficult. There are many instructional books out on the market that says they can help you become an excellant painter in ??? easy lessons. It just doesn't work that way. You can become a profecient painter by learning the basic techniques and,most important,paint, paint, and paint some more. Nita Engle has written a book that allows you to add some fun and spice to the time you paint,paint,and paint some more. Nita is a very respected teacher and painter and if you can't arrange to go to one of her workshops, buy this book! The effects Nita has evolved is amazing and she clearly explains how to get these effects. This book won't turn you into a wonderful painter in ?? easy lessons, but if you are a watercolor painter this is one book you'll use for years. Don't miss it!
