A Graduate Course in Commercial Acting Excellence

Joan See, a classically trained actor (Sanford Meisner, Wynn Handman), explodes numerous myths about acting in commercials, such as:
o Commercial acting is easy
o Commercial acting requires no craft or skill
o Commercial acting is selling
On the contrary, says See: the actor's job is not to sell. Actors "must bring little stories to life in a way that makes other people believe them. If you believe that your job is selling, you will feel that something other than acting is required. But don't forget what the advertisers hired you for - your acting skills. They want your ability to communicate ideas and feelings in such a way that their audience believes you." In other words, actors in commercials need to remain grounded in their foundation skills of acting.
The challenge for actors with a background in theater, says See, is that they don't understand the differing requirements of acting in front of a camera, and the challenge for all actors unfamiliar with the commercial genre is the need to turn in masterful performances in mere seconds in the somewhat bewildering formats and styles found in commercials. This book provides detailed help on both fronts.
The author begins by reviewing acting fundamentals that apply to the naturalistic stories actors are most often asked to bring to life in commercials, including the basic skills of relaxation, concentration, listening and responding, and physicalization. She then discusses the mechanics of acting before a camera, both in the audition and on the set, and lays out strategies for overcoming the most common traps in those settings.
Finally, in the meat of the book, See identifies the three most common forms that Madison Avenue tends to use in commercials -- slice-of-life, spokesperson, and MOS -- and the three most common styles in which those forms are expressed -- film-style, sitcom-style, and "Honeymooners" -- and lays out extensive strategies for practicing, auditioning, and performing in these forms and styles.
This is valuable information indeed: "Analyzing commercial scripts by pinpointing their form and style gives an actor the first chance to control the material. With this information, you suddenly have guidelines for your performance. You have something to work with. The directors and casting directors in the commercial advertising field know what results they want. They are not always skilled at helping actors obtain that result. Actors must be able to function as their own director and bring their performance into the audition with them."
This book provides an excellent set of tools for navigating these challenging but lucrative waters. It is full of practical information, example scripts, and helpful guidance, almost all of which is firmly rooted in classic acting. Practicing and using the techniques in this book, an actor should no longer be like a deer in the headlights at an audition or on the set. Highly recommended.

Up-front, practical, informative, easy to grasp concepts

I have had the pleasure of reading several books for actors aspiring to make commercials a part of their livelihood. This is an easily understood exposition of the many facets of commercial work and the transition from stage acting to camera. Many superb examples of eye-opening scenarios give the book life and energy. Anyone aspiring to make commercials should give this book thorough study. Ms. See offers several other sources for self study in the pages toward the end and examples of commercial copy and the mind set to make a performance count.

Interesting read--- but I was underwhelmed...

This book in much more about the artists than specific techniques. Knowing that going in, I did not expect an instructional book per se, so that was not a disappointment. It's subtitle states "emerging ideas and techniques from 125 international artists". This book in much more about ideas and artists. However, I found very few interesting techniques or exciting work. There are dozens of better instructional books out there. There was just not much in this book that "knocked my socks off" the way other books have. If you expect this to be comparable to "Masters of Polymer Clay" you may be more than a bit disappointed as I was.

In summary, I just didn't find much in the way of style OR technique. When a technique was described, it was done so briefly. Art is obviously subjective, and having said that, your mileage may vary. If you're a book collector of things that interest you, as I am, then go ahead and add this one to your shelf. It is reasonably priced with lots of content, so from that perspective, I guess it's a fair value, but it's just not my cup of tea. No offense to the author or those reviewers that loved the book. I gave the book 3 stars of effort. Not content.

Lots of variety!

As an avid polymer clay enthusiast, I was very interested to see the "global perspective" offered in this book. It starts with a history and overview of the medium and the chapters focus on eight different ways polymer clay is commonly used. Interviews with clay artists provide insights into the craft, as well as their motivations for choosing polymer as their way to express themselves.

My favorite part of the book is when the artists shared how to make one of their signature creations in a step by step tutorial. It was fascinating for me to see the styles from all over the world and to get a glimpse into their personal perspective on clay, art and the world around them. I really enjoyed the book and am learning several new techniques from it.

A book to be treasured

I have been waiting for this book since I heard about it months ago. The bad thing about anticipation is that fulfillment can sometimes be a letdown. That is NOT the case here. If you enjoy polymer clay, you must get this book. If you LOVE polymer clay, and know the artist through her Polymer Clay Daily blog, you've probably already ordered it. It arrived today and I checked every page to acquaint myself with it quickly. There's something for every style and niche, whether you make miniature food or bracelets or wall art or figures or beads or or or...

I don't know how long it will take me to read every word in the book, because the inspiration it provides sends one rushing to the clay table to put the inspiration into action. The inquiry into apophasis, transcendence, and immanence in these Jewish thinkers is symptomatic of a larger question. Recent attempts to harness the apophatic tradition to construct a viable postmodern negative theology, a religion without religion, are not radical enough. Not only are these philosophies of transcendence guilty of a turn to theology that defies the phenomenological presupposition of an immanent phenomenality, but they fall short on their own terms, inasmuch as they persist in employing metaphorical language that personalizes transcendence and thereby runs the risk of undermining the irreducible alterity and invisibility attributed to the transcendent other.

The logic of apophasis, if permitted to run its course fully, would exceed the need to posit some form of transcendence that is not ultimately a facet of immanence. Apophatic theologies, accordingly, must be supplanted by a more far-reaching apophasis that surpasses the theolatrous impulse lying coiled at the crux of theism, an apophasis of apophasis, based on accepting an absolute nothingness to be distinguished from the nothingness of an absolute that does not signify the unknowable One but rather the manifold that is the pleromatic abyss at being's core. Hence, the much-celebrated metaphor of the gift must give way to the more neutral and less theologically charged notion of an unconditional givenness in which the distinction between giver and given collapses. To think givenness in its most elemental, phenomenological sense is to allow the apparent to appear as given without presuming a causal agency that would turn that given into a gift.

About the Author

Elliot R. Wolfson is the Judge Abraham Lieberman Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University. Among Wolfsons many books, Fordham has published Language, Eros, Being: Kabbalistic Hermeneutics and Poetic Imagination, winner of the 2005 National Jewish Book Award for Scholarship. Wolfson had earlier won this award in 1995, as well as the American Academy of Religion Award for the Best Book in category of Historical Studies, for his Through a Speculum That Shines: Vision and Imagination in Medieval Jewish Mysticism. Wolfson's A Dream Interpreted Within a Dream: Oneiropoiesis and the Prism of Imagination won the 2012 American Academy of Religion Award for Constructive and Reflective Studies.

The Weekend Novelist series of writing books are excellent. It's a step-by-step guide that's easy to follow and written in layman's terms by an expert in the industry. It just doesn't get better than that. Try, also, THE WEEKEND NOVELIST WRITERS A MYSTERY; THE WEEKEND NOVELIST REWRITES THE NOVEL; and the second edition of THE WEEKEND NOVELIST.

Not much time to write? Do it on the weekends!

I never seemed to find the time to work on my book during the week, so I found that I was spending loads of time on the weekends trying to do what I felt I should have been doing a little at a time all week long. I read several books on writing a novel and did the exercises they recommended. I ended up doing a lot of stuff, without a lot of thought on what I was really doing-and most importantly WHY. Then, out of the blue, a friend asked me, "Hey, aren't you working on a book or something?". I sort of beat around the bush that I was, but that it was going to take me a million years to do it, and they told me that they were secretly working on a novel on the weekends with the help of a book they got. I borrowed it from them, and WHAM...I had to buy it!
Ray's book is designed to give you the main points of novel construction, yes, one weekend at a time. You do a little thinking about stuff during the week, but you sit down and do the "assignment" on the weekend. Ray's book is one of the best books for a weekend warrior like myself. The assignments given aren't difficult, unless you haven't thought out your plot...or characters...or anything else. What makes these things, and many others hard, is that it makes you understand what you are doing in your story. You have to do a lot of hard thinking during the 52 week period. This is a good thing! You will better understand your characters and plot if you do the background work he suggests.
Like I said, if you would love to write that novel you have been mulling over but only have the weekends to do it-GET THIS BOOK!

This is a great book, a must-read for all beginning writers

I have read a lot of books on the writer's art and the writing game. But this is the first that I have come across that covers everything that a writer needs to complete a novel. Not only is it helpful to all novelists-in-progress, it is a good aid to any writer no matter the type of writing he is trying to accomplish. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Marni Nixon is renowned as the singing voice of many of Hollywood’s greatest stars. On stage, she has starred in Cabaret, My Fair Lady, Opal, Taking My Turn, and James Joyce’s The Dead. The winner of four Emmy awards for the children’s program Boomerang and the star of her own one-woman show (also called Marni Nixon: The Voice of Hollywood), she lives in New York City.

Stephen Cole wrote That Book About That Girl, a companion to the Marlo Thomas television series. As a librettist and lyricist, his musicals include The Night of the Hunter, After the Fair, Dodsworth, and many others. He lives in New York City.

A fun read

A very interesting look into Ms. Nixon's life as an artist and performer. A bit self-centered at times, but for those interested in musical theater and opera especially, a revealing taste of that world.

Marni Nixon's biography is really interesting. She's done more 'ghost' singing than you know about and is humble through out the entire thing.She's one hell of a performer as well as telling a story you'd like to know about.

About the Author

JOHN J. TOFFEY IV graduated from The Ohio State University and Columbia University after serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He taught, coached, and was an administrator in independent schools and colleges until he retired in 1995. The author of A Woman Nobly Planned: Fact and Myth in the Legacy of Flora MacDonald, he lives in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Memorable Memoir

A superb work to which a contemporary of the author can relate on three levels: a history of the terrible North Africa-Sicily-Italy campaign in WWII (three amphibious landings, two airborn assaults, inexperienced leadership and major casualties), the story of a unit commander in that theatre and life at home, with rationing, uncertainty and letters. We know from page one that Jack Toffey will not return which makes the letters home, planning the family reunion and reaching out to his children, deeply moving. And, it should be known, the author did follow the advice of his father from North Africa and shift to first base from shortstop. I know because he fielded my errant throws from third base.

One of my favorite books ever

This book's story of an accomplished military man's journey through the eyes of his young son was incredibly poignant to me. So many passages made me catch my breath and yet, other parts were like a gentle summer breeze. As the mother of sons, it made me reflect on the sacrifices that our forefathers made for us that were so dear and had such a lifelong impact on their families. The stories of baseball and the language of a father and son's ties that bind were incredible.
Jack Toffey's experience in the war gave me a perspective on World War II that made it real for me. The day to day routine and the stress of war is woven beautifully into the bucolic days in Ohio, riding bikes and following baseball.

John Toffey is a great writer and deserves great recognition for telling this story that must have been very difficult for him. We are so much richer for his efforts.

John Toffey IV was my English teacher and baseball coach at the Columbus Academy. He taught us literature and teamwork and, once, how to prepare a defensive position along the creek behind the school. We didn't know then what a remarkable writer he is. His memoir of his father and family during World War II is fine and moving. You won't find better descriptions anywhere of courage, love and war's unending effects. Lt. Col. Toffey would have been very proud.

ROBERT J. RAY is the author of eight novels, including the acclaimed Matt Murdock Mystery series, and has also written several practical writing guides, including The Weekend Novelist and The Weekend Novelist Rewrites a Mystery. A resident of Seattle, he runs writing workshops and formerly taught writing for the University of Washington’s School of Distance Learning. Self-Editing Your Novel Maunuscript

THE WEEKEND NOVELIST REWRITES THE NOVEL makes an excellent companion to Ray's "The Weekend Novelist" (TWN). But, what if you haven't read TWN? You still could follow this book -- thanks to its 11-page detailed glossary. The book also includes a witty rewrite-in-progress of a draft -- a draft that had been completed without its author having read TWN.

In rewriting, Ray focuses on restructuring, not mere copyediting (aka line-editing): "The key to rewriting your novel is not line-editing, the key is fixing the subplots. If you fix the subplots, then the manuscript will shape up" (page 7). The assumption here is that the writer has already structured the main plot with care. Ray suggests many restructuring exercises such as making separate grids for each subplot. Throughout, he presents structural analyses of a number of novels to illustrate craft concepts. The novels include:
literary contemporaries such as
The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler,
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys,and
The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje;
literary classics like
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE,
JANE EYRE,
THE GREAT GATSBY
and a few genre novels like "Gorky Park" and "The Eye of the Needle."

Ray also comments on the screen adaptations of novels and suggests the "Rewrite mantra: to find story secrets, study good films" (p. 35). In both editions of TWN, the short list of recommended books for novel-writing include Syd Field's "The Screenwriter's Workbook." Field's pioneering book, "Screenplay,"
popularized the three-act structure (based on Aristotle's "Poetics") and added two plot points, which he defined "as any incident, episode, or event that hooks into the action and spins it around in another direction."

The second edition of "The Weekend Novelist" begins by noting: "Writing a novel in the twenty-first century is made complicated by the world of screens. It wasn't like that always....Screens have changed the writing world. When the writing world changes, the writer must change." To learn the new complications in the craft, I studied both editions of TWN.

In TWN first edition, Ray lucidly analyzes the fiction craft in one novel, Anne Tyler's "The Accidental Tourist," a great favorite of mine ("Anne Tyler is not merely good; she is wickedly good," wrote John Updike). Study of this edition effectivley teaches many characterization techniques. TWN, second edition, expands "the plotting section ...to give you a range of choices for building your book. The basic concept you need to build a plot is architecture" (ix). The second edition presents detailed craft analyses of five contemporary novels, including two with cyclical structural design. The five novels are:
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon;
Amsterdam: A Novel by Ian McEwan;
White Teeth: A Novel by Zadie Smith;
and the two with cyclical design,
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho;
The Namesake: A Novel by Jhumpa Lahiri (film adaptation,The Namesake DVD).

Yes, the second edition does teach more complex plot-structures. Michael Chabon's "The Adventures of Klavier and Clay" is a great favorite of mine as I fully agree with his aesthetic that "a work of fiction must be first of all entertaining" (A recent conversation at UC Berkeley library). Another great favorite is Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Namesake," especially its cyclical plot structure. However, if you are plannig a linear plot structure, the TWN first edition (now out of print) might be adequate.

The rewriting guide schedules 20 hours each weekend for 17 weeks for rewriting -- at least as many hours as scheduled in TWN for completing the initial draft. I found no particular merit in long sessions on weekends and reverted to the equivalent schedule of daily three-hour sessions.

Although "The Weekend Novelist Rewrites the Novel" could serve as a guide by itself, it'll clearly be more effective as a follow-up to the second edition of "The Weekend Novelist."

unworthy of its predecessor

THE WEEKEND NOVELIST REWRITES THE NOVEL is the sequel to THE WEEKEND NOVELIST, which I found quite useful. In that earlier book, Ray took the huge task of writing a first draft and simplified it by breaking it into 52 parts, to be finished in a year of weekends. He tries to do something similar here, but instead of simplifying, he’s made rewriting so complex no one will do it. If I were a new author, I’d find Ray’s method too intimidating to try. Now that I am a seasoned author, I just find it silly.

Ray’s rewrite plan has seventeen steps. If you write only on weekends, it will take about four months to finish. But even then, you won’t be done because at that point, you've only restructured your novel. Ray’s plan leaves only two weekends to polish the prose.

The main problem with THE WEEKEND NOVELIST REWRITES THE NOVEL is that it breaks things down too finely. For example, Ray instructs writers to make a grid of every character who opposes the main character, detailing when they enter and exit the story, what their resources are, what object symbolizes them, and what they want. But really, only the last one is of any use. Once you know what the bad guy wants, and how it’s in opposition to the good guy, you know everything. This is just one example of the tasks Ray sets forth. Even if you had all the time in the world, there is no reason to do most of them. They are wasted effort.

I’m a person who loves story structure and loves rewriting. I color code my outlines and think of index cards as toys, yet I found THE WEEKEND NOVELIST REWRITES THE NOVEL tedious in the extreme. I’d rather spend my money on a better book and spend my time doing actual, productive work.
