Sounding/Silence: Martin Heidegger at the Limits of Poetics (Perspectives in Continental Philosophy (FUP)), by David Nowell Smith

Sounding/Silence charts Heidegger's deep engagement with poetry, situating it within the internal dynamics of his thought and within the domains of poetics and literary criticism. Heidegger viewed poetics and literary criticism with notorious disdain: he claimed that his Erläuterungen ("soundings") of Hölderlin's poetry were not "contributions to aesthetics and literary history" but rather stemmed "from a necessity for thought." And yet, the questions he poses--the value of significance of prosody and trope, the concept of "poetic language", the relation between language and body, the "truth" of poetry--reach to the very heart of poetics as a discipline, and indeed situate Heidegger within a wider history of thinking on poetry and poetics. opening up points of contact between Heidegger's discussions of poetry and technical and critical analyses of these poems, Nowell Smith addresses a lacuna within Heidegger scholarship and sets off from Heidegger's thought to sketch a philosophical "poetics of limit".

Review

The best book on Heidegger and poetry that I have ever read, Nowell-Smith's Sounding Silence takes both Heidegger and poetry very seriously, presuming that the most worthwhile goal is to do justice to both in an attempt to advance our understanding of poetics.-Jonathan Culler, Cornell University

"This is a major work of critical thought. . . highly recommended." -Choice

"'Sounding/Silence' is a welcome contribution to a growing movement to rehabilitate literary criticism left casting about in the ruins that critical theory has made of literature studies." -The Review of Metaphysics

Brooklyn Is: Southeast of the Island: Travel Notes, by James Agee

For the first time in book form-a great writer's classic celebration of the essence of Brooklyn. In 1939, James Agee was assigned to write an article on Brooklyn for a special issue of Fortune on New York City. The draft was rejected for creative differences, and remained unpublished until it appeared in Esquire in 1968 under the title Southeast of the Island: Travel Notes.Crossing the borough from the brownstone heights over the Brooklyn Bridge out through backstreet neighborhoods like Flatbush, Midwood, and Sheepshead Bay that roll silently to the sea, Agee captured in 10,000 remarkable words, the essence of a place and its people. Propulsive, lyrical, jazzy, and tender, itspitch-perfect descriptions endure even as Brooklyn changes; Agee's essay is a New York classic. Resonant with the rhythms of Hart Crane, Walt Whitman, and Thomas Wolfe, it takes its place alongside Alfred Kazin's A Walker in the City as a great writer's love-song to Brooklyn and alongside E. B. White's Here Is New York as an essential statement of the place so many call home. James Agee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1909. One of the great prose stylists of the past century, Agee wrote in many forms-poetry, short stories, novels, essays, commentary, and criticism. In 1958 he won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for A Death in the Family, and he also wrote the classic account of poor Southern farmers, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, accompanied by Walker Evans's documentary photographs. With John Huston, he wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay for The African Queen, and he was an influential film and theater critic for Time and The Nation. James Agee died in 1955 of a heart attack in a New York City taxicab. In the fall of 2005, the Library of America will publish a two-volume collection of his writings. Jonathan Lethem's novels include Fortress of Solitude and Motherless Brooklyn, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, his most recent book is The Disappointment Artist. Lethem was born and raised in Brooklyn, where he still lives.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Agee (1909-55) is now considered a classic American writer, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning and posthumous novel A Death in the Family (1957), of a brilliant and seminal body of movie criticism that shaped how that genre is perceived and practiced, and coauthor, with Walker Evans, of the photo-and-text Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), a heart-touching account of Depression-era farmers. Now, with this little book about Brooklyn, he can also be counted a travel writer. It remained unpublished during his lifetime (though written in 1939), saw its first appearance in print in 1968 (in Esquire), and finally has been given separate publication as a book. Introduced by Jonathan Lethem, author of the riveting and place-defining novel Motherless Brooklyn (1999), Agee's prose poem captures the textural variety of Brooklyn in language that bears reading aloud for its lilt, melody, and pleasingly pungent vocabulary: "The collaborated creature of the insanely fungoid growth of fifteen or twenty villages, now sewn and quilted edge to edge, and lacking any center in remote proportion of its mass, [Brooklyn] is perhaps the most amorphous of all modern cities." Mourning Philology: Art and Religion at the Margins of the Ottoman Empire, by Marc Nichanian

"Pagan life seduces me a little more with each passing day. If it were possible today, I would change my religion and would joyfully embrace poetic paganism," wrote the Armenian poet Daniel Varuzhan in 1908. During the seven years that remained in his life, he wrote largely in this "pagan" vein. If it was an artistic endeavour, why then should art be defined in reference to religion? And which religion precisely? Was Varuzhan echoing Schelling's Philosophy of Art?

Mourning Philology draws on Varuzhan and his work to present a history of the national imagination, which is also a history of national philology, as a reaction to the two main philological inventions of the nineteenth century: mythological religion and the native. In its first part, the book thus gives an account of the successive stages of the orientalist philology. The last episode in this story of national emergence took place in 1914 in Constantinople, when the literary journal Mehyan gathered around Varuzhan the great names to come of Armenian literature in the diaspora

More than a Monologue: Sexual Diversity and the Catholic Church: Inquiry, Thought, and Expression (Catholic Practice in North America (FUP)

This powerful new collection gives voice to the lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons with and within the Catholic Church, and promotes much-needed dialogue about faith and sexuality.

This volume, like its companion, Voices of Our Times, collects essays drawn from a series of public conferences held in autumn 2011 entitled "More than a Monologue." The series was the fruit of collaboration among four institutions of higher learning: two Catholic universities and two nondenominational divinity schools. The conferences aimed to raise awareness of and advance informed, compassionate, and dialogical conversation about issues of sexual diversity within the Catholic community, as well as in the broader civic worlds that the Catholic Church and Catholic people inhabit. They generated fresh, rich sets of scholarly and reflective contributions that promise to take forward the delicate work of theological-ethical and ecclesial development. Along with Voices of Our Times, this volume captures insights from the conferences and aims to foster what the Jesuit Superior General, Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, has called the "depth of thought and imagination" needed to engage effectively with complex realities, especially in areas marked by brokenness, pain, and the need for healing. The volumes will serve as vital resources for understanding and addressing better the too often fraught relations between LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) persons, their loved ones and allies, and the Catholic community.

Inquiry, Thought, and Expression explores dimensions of ministry, ethics, theology, and law related to a range of LGBTQ concerns, including Catholic teaching, its reception among the faithful, and the Roman Catholic Church's significant role in world societies. Within the volume, a series of essays on ministry explores various
perspectives not frequently heard within the church. Marriage equality and the treatment of LGBTQ individuals by and within the Roman Catholic Church are considered from the vantage points of law, ethics, and theology. Themes of language and discourse are explored in analyses of the place of sexual diversity in church history, thought, and authority.

The two volumes of More than a Monologue, like the conferences from which they developed, actively move beyond the monologic voice of the institutional church on the subject of LGBTQ issues, inviting and promoting open conversations about sexual diversity and the church. Those who read Inquiry, Thought, and Expression will encounter not just an excellent resource for research and teaching in the area of moral theology but also an opportunity to actively listen to and engage in groundbreaking discussions about faith and sexuality within and outside the Catholic Church.

Review

"Wonderful companions to the personal reflections of Volume 1, this book's diverse, insightful essays stand on their own as truly catholic methodological contributions to a queer Catholic ethic. Volume II: Inquiry, Thought, and Expression is required reading for all scholars of Catholic sexual ethics and for anyone who wishes to engage Catholic moral theology seriously with the philosophical ethics of the last half-century."-Cristina L.H. Traina, Northwestern University

"The More Than in the title of these volumes indicates a commitment to move beyond the Monologue of ecclesiastical teaching on sexual diversity, and those who defend that teaching, and engage the voices and lived experiences of people."-Theological Studies

The Accidental Playground: Brooklyn Waterfront Narratives of the Undesigned and Unplanned, by Daniel Campo

Highly illustrated and artfully researched, the book will draw readers into a unique space in one of New York City's most popular boroughs.

The Accidental Playground explores the remarkable landscape created by individuals and small groups who occupied and rebuilt an abandoned Brooklyn waterfront. While local residents, activists, garbage haulers, real estate developers, speculators, and two city administrations fought over the fate of the former Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal (BEDT), others simply took to this decaying edge, transforming it into a unique venue for leisure, creative, and everyday practices. These occupiers and do-it-yourself builders created their own waterfront parks and civic spaces absent every resource needed for successful urban development, including plans, designs, capital, professional assistance, consensus, and permission from the waterfront's owners. Amid trash, ruins, weeds, homeless encampments, and the operation of an active garbage transfer station, they inadvertently created the "Brooklyn Riviera" and made this waterfront a destination that offered much more than its panoramic vistas of the Manhattan skyline. The terminal evolved into the home turf for unusual and sometimes spectacular recreational, social, and creative subcultures, including the skateboarders who built a short-lived but nationally renowned skatepark, a twenty-five-piece "public" marching band, fire performance troupes, artists, photographers, and filmmakers. At the same time it served the basic recreational needs of local residents. Collapsing piers became great places to catch fish, sunbathe, or take in the views; the foundation of a demolished warehouse became an ideal place to picnic, practice music, or do an art project; rubble-strewn earth became a compelling setting for film and fashion shoots; a broken bulkhead became a beach; and thick patches of weeds dotted by ailanthus trees became a jungle. These reclamations, all but ignored by city and state governments and property interests that were set to transform this waterfront, momentarily added to the distinctive cultural landscape of the city's most bohemian and rapidly changing neighborhood.

Drawing on a rich mix of documentary strategies, including observation, ethnography, photography, and first-person narrative, Daniel Campo probes this accidental playground, allowing those who created it to share and examine their own narratives, perspectives, and conflicts. The multiple constituencies of this waterfront were surprisingly diverse, their stories colorful and provocative. When taken together, Campo argues, they suggest a radical reimagining of urban parks and public spaces, and the practices by which they are created and maintained.

The Accidental Playground, which treats readers to an utterly compelling story, is an exciting and distinctive contribution to the growing literature on unplanned spaces and practices in cities today.

Review

"With its vivid, detailed descriptions The Accidental Playground portrays the many, varied activities that citizens pursue, with great ingenuity and determination, in un-designed urban spaces. Campo's stories make painfully clear what is lost when such spaces are redeveloped. The book makes an invaluable contribution to the growing literature on the value of the un-planned."--Karen Franck, New Jersey Institute of Technology

"Daniel Campo's The Accidental Playground explores critical terrain at the intersection of urban planning, insurgent space, and visual culture. Campo's deep and sensitive portrait of a unique city space eliminated by business-as-usual New York development politics is a thoughtful paen to do-it-yourself placemaking, but also a nuanced warning that planning-for-profit can leave the true public good behind."--Brent D. Ryan, Associate Professor of Urban Design and Public Policy, MIT

"The Accidental Playground provides an informative and fascinating study of a unique area of Brooklyn. From skateboarding and marching bands to artworks and impromptu residences, Campo's perceptive eye and insightful interpretations provide a convincing account of the diverse value of city wastelands for creative urban living."Iain Borden, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL

". . . In this magisterial account of the waterfront, Daniel Campo expertly deploys chops from many disciplines--anthropology, urban studies, journalism, architecture--to paint a vivid portrait of a lost world. Over years of research, he won the trust of the [Brooklyn] locals and they told him what the waterfront meant to them. Campo is a scholar who can write, and his stories preserve the magic of an urban wilderness that has been obliterated by the scheming of the rich and powerful. The Accidental Playground is both timeless and cautionary: places like the Williamsburg waterfront are essential, but if we don't listen to visionaries like Campo, they'll always be stolen from us."-Robert Anasi, The Last Bohemia: Scenes from the Life of Williamsburg, Brooklyn

"Campo's study plunges you into a red tape strewn hole of bureaucratic irrationality." -Quarterly Snack

". . . Thanks to Campo's unbiased writing, this is a great book of what the city used to be." -Ink New York

"Daniel Campo. a former New York City planner, considers the serendipitous development of Williamsburg . . ."--Sam Roberts, The New York Times

"The Accidental Playground provides a great contribution to emerging debates on vernacular creative city dynamics. In particular it offers a critical view on urban politics in relation to the design and planning of parks and other public spaces." --societyandspace.com

". . . we could all benefit from Campo's challenge to incorporate a broader view of par constituencies and develop a richer appreciation for the connections between place and the breadth of human experience." -Journal of Planning Eduaction and Research

"Daniel Campo's book, 'The Accidental Playground,' tells the story of an abandoned rail terminal on the North Brooklyn waterfront that between 200 and 2010 became the home turf of skateboarders, artists, marching bands, homeless people, and neighborhood residents in need of a bigger and freer backyard." -Next City

"Campo's close, yet open, reading should be an inspiration for students of planning and urbanism, and for contemporary practitioners. . ." -Journal of Design History

The Old Bohemia Is Gone, RIP
By B. Wolinsky
Daniel Campo worked for the New York City planning commission in the late 1990’s, a time when NYC was rising from its Death Wish reputation in a climb that hasn’t stopped. Rudy Giuliani was still basking in the glow of his take-no-crap popularity, and with downtown Manhattan almost 100% gentrified, he was setting his sights on the Williamsburg/Greenpoint waterfront, with its disused piers and trash-strewn lots. But what was left out of all the hubbub was the fact that the Williamsburg waterfront was no longer the crime-magnet that people thought it was. In the past decade, with struggling artists moving into the area, the waterfront had become a place for skating, music, and performance art.

By 2000, there were several improvised skate ramps on the “slab,” an old concrete pier. One of them was called the volcano for its odd shape, built with leftover concrete from building projects. For the construction companies, it was cheaper to give away wet concrete than haul it back in the truck, so there was plenty of free material. Some of it was sponsored by skate magazine, because having another skate park (legal or otherwise) would boost their sales (another example of capitalism at its best, Occupy Movement take note.) It was a weekend performance space for bands, fire dancers, jugglers, and just about every street performance imaginable; an urban version of the Burning Man festival.

In stark contrast to the “hip” reputation of today, Greenpoint was still an industrial zone by 2001. I remember it being safe, healthy (despite the underground oil spills), but with few nice restaurants. The 1990’s Brooklyn is depicted positively in Alex Robinson’s graphic novel Box Office Poison, but in the scenes where they eat out, it’s always a diner or an Italian place. There weren’t any of the cool restaurants that you have there now. If you didn’t mind the simple atmosphere, it was great for artists, musicians, or anyone that needed a place that was cheap, close to Manhattan, and safer than the South Bronx. In those days, Williamsburg’s inhabitants, whether they were yong artists or old working-class Poles, were used to making things themselves. The “slab” exemplified the DIY ethic.

The waterfront that was featured in the movie Hurricane Streets (among others) is mostly gone. It was gobbled up by State Parks and condominiums with views of Manhattan. But thanks to Campo’s unbiased writing, this is a great book of what the city used to be.

A great leap forward in the understanding of open space in the city
By Seth Zeren
This is a fantastic book, both a closely researched and written ethnography of an in-between-space (a disappearing but essential element of vital city life) and a thoughtful reflection on who creates the city, the unintended losses caused by formal planning and development, and the ultimate ephemeral nature of good places. Very important reading for planners, developers, and designers seeking to create great places, parks, or open spaces. The moral: leave some room for others to define the program, to color without lines.

Very well done
By Chris Lambert
For a book that covers so many disparate types of daytime programs (game shows, soap operas, sports, cartoons and kids' shows, and so on), the volume is remarkably accurate, well-written and heavily researched. You'd think the author was an expert on every genre. Maybe he is, but more likely, he just cared enough to get everything right. How refreshing.

One of my favorite books about Television!
By KS62
This is a great book about Daytime TV. I only wished that there had been a more updated version printed.

It has tons of shows that aired on daytime TV. It covers Cartoons, Children's programs, Game shows, News shows, Soap operas, Sports programs, Talk shows and more. It gives you show air dates, a synopsis of the plot, its principle cast members and other pertinent info about the show.

The writting is small and there is a lot of material packed into the 516 pages. Get a copy while you still can! I love this book!

The Tears of Sovereignty: Perspectives of Power in Renaissance Drama, by Philip Lorenz

A comparative study of the representation of sovereignty in paradigmatic plays of early modernity, The Tears of Sovereignty argues that the great playwrights of the period--William Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, and Calderón de la Barca--reconstitute the metaphors through which contemporary theorists continue to conceive the problems of sovereignty.

The book focuses in particular on the ways the logics of these metaphors inform sovereignty's conceptualization as a "body of power." Each chapter is organized around a key tropological operation performed on that "body," from the analogical relations invoked in Richard II, through the metaphorical transfers staged in Measure for Measure to the autoimmune resistances they produce in Lope's Fuenteovejuna, and, finally, the allegorical returns of Calderón's Life is a Dream and Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale.

The "tears" of sovereignty are the exegetical tropes produced and performed on the English stages and Spanish corrales of the seventeenth century through which we continue to view sovereignty today.

Review

"Tears of Sovereignty is a smart, philosophically textured analysis of sovereignty on the seventeenth-century stage."--Graham Hammill, University at Buffalo, SUNY

". . . a highly theorized account of a set of mesmerizing problem plays from Spanish and English theater, which generate a range of insightful new accounts of the operation of the tropes of metaphor, analogy and allegory in relation to the theatrical image, the Eucharist, and the insignia of power."--Julia Reinhard Lupton, author of Thinking with Shakespeare: Essays on Politics and Life

"The central concept of this book hinges around a play on words in the title: specifically a 'double entendre' for the word 'tears,' which can mean the product either of weeping or shredding of fabric. What is conveyed by this word play is at once a destruction and a nostalgia for what has been destroyed." -Comparative Drama, Hilaire Kallendorf

"Lorenz masterfully interweaves philosophical, political, sociological, and historical perspectives into his readings of these diverse plays. . .Recommended"--Choice Magazine

"This important study offers us something like a primer in the mounting scholarship currently directed at the concept of sovereignty in early modernity."- Renaissance Quarterly

Realizing Capital: Financial and Psychic Economies in Victorian Form, by Anna Kornbluh

During a tumultuous period when financial speculation began rapidly to outpace industrial production and consumption, Victorian financial journalists commonly explained the instability of finance by criticizing its inherent artifice drawing persistent attention to what they called "fictitious capital." In a shift that naturalized this artifice, this critique of fictitious capital virtually disappeared by the 1860s, being replaced by notions of fickle investor psychology and mental equilibrium encapsulated in the fascinating metaphor of "psychic economy."

In close rhetorical readings of financial journalism, political economy, and the works of Dickens, Eliot, and Trollope, Kornbluh examines the psychological framing of economics, one of the nineteenth century's most enduring legacies, reminding us that the current dominant paradigm for understanding financial crisis has a history of its own. She shows how novels illuminate this displacement and ironize ideological metaphors linking psychology and economics, thus demonstrating literature's unique facility for evaluating ideas in process. Inheritors of this novelistic project, Marx and Freud each advance a critique of psychic economy that refuses to naturalize capitalism.

Review

"Realizing Capital is not just about the psychic life of financial capital, about how the mad dance of the capital affects human psyche, and about how Victorian literature from Dickens onwards registered the psychic distortions imposed by the mad circulation of the capital. The underlying premise is a much more radical one: the psychic life of capital, the way individuals experience and fictionalize financial circulation, is a key ingredient of economic reality itself, since the reality of the financial capital is itself structured like a fiction. Although Kornbluh's book deals with Victorian England, it holds a mirror to our era - if you want to understand what goes on today, how a madness like the 2008 meltdown was possible, read Realizing Capital!" -Slavoj Zizek, University of Ljubljana

". . . Impressively researched, highly inventive, and powerfully driven by original close readings of nineteenth-century fiction and non-fiction."-Zarena Aslami, Michigan State University

"By tracing the cultural circulation of two specific tropes--"fictitious capital--" and "psychic economy"--Kornbluh makes a compelling argument about the complex figurative ties that bind the realist novel to our understanding of both capitalism and the psyche. This exciting and original book will make us reconsider the novel's cultural work as well as that of its criticism."--Mario Ortiz-Robles, University of Wisconsin-Madison

"This highly original and far-reaching book puts Marx and Freud into an exciting new dialogue with the Victorian novel. Kornbluh reads these imposing thinkers as engaged in the same project as the realist novelists, all of them struggling to defamiliarize the frighteningly fictitious character of capital. Offering thrilling new insights into Great Expectations, Middlemarch, and The Way We Live Now, this book culminates in a tour de force reading of Marx's Capital as a Bildungsroman and a radical rethinking of Freud's 'psychic economy.'"-Caroline Levine, University of Wisconsin, Madison

"'Realizing Capital' should be essential reading for anyone wishing to follow cutting edge work on the form of the Victorian novel." -Adela Pinch, Studies in English Literature 1500-1900
