For the Record focuses on the experiences of journalists, primarily in their own words, who worked in Rochester, New York, on the Gannett owned Democrat & Chronicle and the Times Union. A well written, if somewhat academic,review of newspaper publication...when reporters and editors were hard drinking and totally committed to their work, community and getting out the news. I worked for the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle as a cub reporter and was delighted to find references to some of the lions of the newsroom and, also, sadly, to the second-class status of woman reporters in those days. I would heartedly recommend the book to those who study journalism and those that may not fully understand the meaning and importance of the printed news and views.

Süssen Is Now Free of Jews offers a close look at the legacy of a few Jewish families from Süssen-a village in the District of Göppingen, which is located in the state of Baden Württemberg in southern Germany. The author, Gilya Gerda Schmidt, looks at this rural region through the lens of two Jewish families-the Langs and the Ottenheimers-who settled there in the early twentieth century. As a child, she shared with the Langs the same living space for just a few months. She remembers her mother's telling her of the Jews who lived in Süssen until the Holocaust.

More than thirty years later, in a used bookstore in Knoxville, Tennessee, the author accidentally found documentation verifying the Jewish presence in a book about the surviving Jews of Württemberg. In it, she found confirmation that there had been Jews living in Süssen until the Holocaust. For the first time, she had the proof she needed to look into the reality behind this lingering mystery. Here began her detective-like journey to find out what happened to the Jews of Süssen.

A decade of research into local and regional archives ensued, and this very penetrating study is the result. In it, the author attempts to shed light on not just the original question of what happened to the two families during the Holocaust but also on a host of other questions: What was it like to be Jewish in rural southern Germany a century ago? What were the Jewish traditions of this region? What were the relations between Jews and Christians before the Holocaust? And where did those family members who were able to escape or who survived the concentration camps go when they left Süssen or Göppingen? Few witnesses came forward, yet the documents in the archives spoke volumes. This micro-history records the not-so-romantic journey of two Jewish families who lived in the Fils Valley. The study also addresses issues of being an American prisoner of war; of resuming life after the Holocaust; of the bureaucratic nightmare of requisitions, restitution, and reparations; and of life in America.

This unique book will be of interest to a general readership and is an important book for scholars in German and Holocaust studies.

Glad I did my research before buying, great book.

I looked for quit a while trying to decide what calligraphy book to buy and ended up going to a large bookstore in our area so I could look through the books in person, they had approximately a dozen different calligraphy books. This one stood heads above the rest.
I am about 1 month into calligraphy and don't plan to go beyond the fountain pen type pen. But if I do decide to go further this book gives information plentiful, varied and detailed enough that I could set up a professional workshop if I chose to go there in the future.
The book is very comprehensive. It covers gilding, pens from fountain to dip pens, papers , how to setup and prepare a workspace, needed tools. This section you can following completely or easily determine how much, how little and what you do or do not need for your personal needs.
I love that the book addresses holding the pen for right and left handers. There are 10 alphabets to choose from learn one or all and concise instructions on how to make each letter, ie... pen placement and stroke order.
Other areas covered are doing calligraphy on colored papers, mixing colored inks to make new colors, how to choose color combinations. Also included is the pretty stuff, flourishing, which are all the pretty curly cues and such that you may want to add to a letter, a line or a border. Ornamentation of say like a capital letter at the beginning of a book, an invitation, or announcement where they make a beautiful capital letter and then add pretty designs like leaves, flowers, these specially flourished capital letters are often contained within a square then embellished with ornamentation and different colors, even gold leafing or embossing, which of course the book covers.
This book also gives ideas and how to's on making pretty borders around your paper , or just in one corner of the paper, or up one side of the paper. Design ideas and layouts are included, they show how to make your design on graph paper first is you need to keep the design lined up with the letter or other parts of the design. This means that you can make up your own ideas for your own design after a little practice, very cool.
The book ends with 60 pages of various calligraphy projects, running a big variety of design, style and materials. Then at the very end there is a wonderful list of resources, suppliers etc....
I am so glad I did my homework, I know I have chosen the only book I will every need on calligraphy unless I want to get into the kind of flourishing where they draw birds and other designs. I should be so lucky to get to that stage, but I love thinking maybe someday I will. This book has everything you need for a long time to come and is an excellent value.

Nice book, very comprehensive; exemplars could be larger

(I'm reviewing the UK version "The Complete Calligrapher" which I'm pretty sure is the same book, just with a different cover in the US.)

If the original publisher (or author) reads this, I would make a few suggestions: Remove the wasted space on the Workbook pages. No calligrapher would write in a book like this - the ink would just run! Remove all the white space; then the exemplars in the Workbook pages could fit on two pages easily and could be a little larger too. Also, the broad-pen examplar "nib widths" should match a known nib size (say, like Speedball C-2) so we could trace them.

Still in the Alphabet chapter, I really like the two-page spread for the "Variations" - but putting 4 variations on a page means that each one is really too small to be useful. (I might try to scan them and blow them up.) Would much rather see 2 on a page, printed larger. In fact, the original examplar on the chapter's opening page could be made bigger if it was moved to the facing page. As it is, the eye-candy "example" is larger than the more-useful exemplar.

Otherwise, really nice looking book. Looking forward to reading it in detail.

My wife bought me this book for my birthday after seeing me struggle with other calligraphy books and online resources. This is by far the BEST I've seen and after just a few months I'm totally designing great scripts. It even has great advice on how to fix the pens which I had been struggling with, then goes into not just the basic alphabets but also variations and ended off with design advice.

now i dont know how many books on stop-motion have been written but i cant believe that there is a more complete book on the subject.if you are a willys obrian/ray harryhausen fan you will find this book very informative.throw in the rest of the stop motion history and you have in this book a vertible whos-who on the subject.

Overflowing With Information

This is a great book, and it has quickly become one of my favorite Amazon purchases ever.

Just about anything you've ever wondered about stop-motion animation is both talked about AND illustrated in this book.

There are seven chapters. After some introductions, the first chapter is an overview of what is stop-motion animation, drawing in detail on Harryhausen's examples. Then a chapter on the early pioneers. Then, of course, a long chapter on O'Brien. Then an almost-as-long chapter on Harryhausen. Then there are three concluding chapters, on contemporaries of O'Brien and Harryhausen, the next generation after them, and the contemporary world of stop-motion. There are two pages of footnotes that provide great details and some behind-the-scenes gossip.

Although I love this book, I only gave four stars because of just a few nit-picking issues. One, it really isn't a general history of the field, it is a review of the O'Brien and Harryhausen careers with "additional information" on everyone else. Two, there is SO MUCH information sometimes the pages are too full. Sometimes a page will have the narrative of the book, an extended quote from one of the people and also multiple captions for the many photographs and illustrations. Sometimes it took a little effort to sort out what I was reading. Three, this is a high-quality book, with heavy paper stock, but my edition contained three pages with typography smears. The smears didn't obscure any text, but they really seemed out of place since the overall quality of the book was so high.

I really recommend this book highly. I would have liked to have seen more about the contemporary world--the final chapter is the shortest--but there is so much here that I will be reading and re-reading this book for a long time. Great stuff.

A must have for any stop-motion enthusiast.

Lots of great, high quality glossy photos in here. The book feels strong, its covers hard and protective. And hey, it's written by the Godfather of stop-motion, Ray Harryhausen. Even if you don't like to read, this book is worth the purchase just for the vintage photos and rarities only Harryhausen could offer. Lots on information and fun facts on the medium and a great section on Willis O'Brien. Weather you're an animator yourself, or just a fan of the arts and fine animation, you cannot go wrong with this book. And amazon's got the best price on the web to boot.

She then describes and analyzes Rawls and Kongzi's distinct views concerning a sense of justice, compares the two in light of each other, and explores the contemporary relevance a sense of justice has for political, ethical, and educational theory in both liberal societies and today's China. About the Author
CHRIS SOLARSKI received a BA in computer animation and began working as a 3D character and environment artist for Sony Computer Entertainment in London. Eventually, Solarski enrolled in art classes at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, he discovered the exciting connection between classical art techniques and video game design. He currently develops his own video games under Solarski Studio. He also works as creative director of the Swiss-based social gaming startup Gbanga, and lectures at SAE Institute in Zurich.

Great for any artist

I just finished reading this book and absolutely loved it. I actually got it for my daughter who wants to be a video game artist. I started reading it myself and couldn't put it down. Other than the occasional sketch, I wouldn't consider myself an artist. This book explains things about perspective, figures, landscapes and overall themes in a way that really makes sense. I would recommend it for any artist, not just people interested in video game design. However, if you want to be in video game design, this is something you should read. I usually just skim through most art related books, but for some reason I read everything in this one. There's something about the way it was written and the connections between classic art and video games that really made sense. For example, using a classic painting of a landscape, he explains how objects in the distance have less contrast and less defined edges compared to the overall background. The further away it gets, the more the object and the background blend together. Then he shows the background of a very familiar video game and in my head I said "ah-ha".

Love this book

I'm an art teacher who teaches foundations and I've been searching for years for a book that connects the import of knowing the basics and their application to today's technology and media. This is the book. A Rembrandt on one page, a Halo still on the other. The book discusses perspective, foreshortening, atmosphere, composition, figure - all the things an artist should know but students who want to do digital work think the computer will do for them. This book is fun and really integrates the two genres (traditional and digital artwork) in a way that is useful and cohesive to the reader. Highly recommend for students and teachers alike. Not for art snobs who discriminate against the genre, but it would do them good to read. Venues that pay commercial artists and designers are just as dependent on the artful use of basics as the masters of traditional fine art were, and let's face it, digital is making headway into fine art too. Highly recommend.

Decent Introductory Book to Drawing

Most of the focus is on drawing fundamentals, human body, and comparing classical art to modern videogame art. This is not a comprehensive guide to creating video game art. It is missing other important topics such as creating art digitally, inorganic objects such as buildings, and color. More useful for the beginner artist such as me than an expert traditional artist transitioning to game design. I have improved greatly in my drawing skills over the past month despite only spending 30 minutes a day on this book. Another good thing is that the materials to learn from this book you need can be found easily and cheaply. All you need is paper, pencil, and an eraser to do most of the tutorials.

About the Author

Lawrence F. Rhu is Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina. He is the author of The Genesis of Tasso's Narrative Theory: English Translations of the Early Poetics and a Comparative Study of Their Significance.

Stanley Cavell is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Harvard University. His recent publications include A Pitch of Philosophy: Autobiographical Exercises; Philosophical Passages: Wittgenstein, Emerson, Austin, and Derrida; Cities of Words: Pedagogical Letters on a Register of the Moral Life and Emerson's Transcendental Etudes.

Shakespeare, Philosophy, and the American Dream

"Rhu shows how Cavell's philosophy is inseparable from his interest in Shakespeare and Hollywood and so, indirectly, how the interests of an important philosopher are just like anyone else's, and how philosophy for Cavell represents one of the few remaining possibilities of expressing one's simultaneous affection for both 'Hamlet' and 'North by Northwest.'
