Insights to the "old" Science/Bible disputes

This book fills up a knowledge gap for many of us. We can now trace the adventures of the very conservative versus the not that conservative folk in the Bible & science conflict, at least for the major part of the 20th century. Kudos to Mr Rios for the hard work and clear writing. May his insights help us to do a better job of disagreeing agreeably.

Anne-Marie Kirmse, O.P., Ph.D., served as Avery Dulles's Research Associate and Executive Assistant for his twenty years at Fordham University. Since the Cardinal's death in 2008, she continues at Fordham as Research Associate for the McGinley Chair and as Associate Professor of Theology in the College of Liberal Studies.

Michael M. Canaris works as an administrator at Fairfield University's Center for Faith and Public Life and teaches on the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology, and Religious Studies at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.

A love of film music and its composers

Although clearly a labour of love by the author, this is also an entirely professionally written and produced book. Perhaps wisely, it doesn't set out to be a comprehensive, definitive guide to film music composers and their recordings - this would have been impractical both in terms of the writing and the eventual weight of the tome! But what Jon Burlingame has done is to include a mini-biography of just about every important film music composer there has been up to the present day, plus a selection of what he considers to be their best works. This provides both an invaluable reference guide not only to composers but also an interesting debating point as to which of their scores should have been included.
It was pleasing to see a large number of photos of the composers and some record sleeve reproductions. Many potential readers will doubtless be familiar with the likes of John Williams, John Barry, Henry Mancini and Elmer Bernstein, but they'll also get the opportunity to see some 'golden age' composers, like Miklos Rozsa, Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin and Franz Waxman, as well as relatively unsung heroes such as John Scott, Christopher Young and Rachel Portman, and those more associated with classical music, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich.
The author's enthusiasm for the subject is very apparent and no stone has been left unturned in order to ensure this book becomes an essential purchase for all lovers of film music. An excellent effort, which is thoroughly recommended, not just to film music aficionados, but also to anybody with an interest in the cinema.

In Sound And Vision: 60 Years Of Motion Picture Soundtracks, Jon Burlingame has created an indispensable, seminal, very highly recommended reference guide featuring a detailed history of Hollywood film music on record and compact disc. Also included are up-to-date biographical sketches of soundtrack composers from the inception of the movies down to the present day. Annotated listings of the best-selling, award-winning, or otherwise memorable soundtracks of the past and present (original film scores as well as movie musicals and song-compilation scores) further enhance this marvelous compendium. Of special note is the "user friendly" and comprehensive index so that the reader can quickly reference whether a particular piece of movie music is commercially available.

Comprehensive and fastidiously researched, "Sound and Vision" towers over the competition. Written by Jon Burlingame, perhaps the most widely read and internationally respected writer in the field today, this book should be in the library of every film music buff. Unlike other books which contain reviews cobbled together from various non-professionals, this book was entirely written with a single knowledgeable voice. The comprehensive index of commerically available titles alone is worth the price of the book. When combined with rare photographs and a well written and perceptive history of music in films, this book becomes indispensible to both the casual and veteran fan of music in film.

Catherine Drinker Bowen's biographies include a work on Tchaikovsky, titled Beloved Friend, Yankee from Olympus, dealing with the live of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, The Lion and the Throne: The Life and Times of Sir Edward Coke, and John Adams and the American Revolution. She died in 1973. Dominic Balestra is Professor of Philosophy at Fordham University.

A biographical portrait of Bacon

Francis Bacon was a man filled with contradiction. He was consumed by two ambitions: 1) an insatiable thirst for knowledge and, 2) an endless "striving for political favor and position." The latter ambition finally did him in, bringing about his impeachment from Parliament for taking bribes, losing the high position (Lord Chancellor) he had spent his whole life striving for. Five years of life were left to Bacon after his disgrace, time spent in scientific and writing pursuits, but the damage was done.

Ms. Bowen does not write a full and detailed biography here, but rather more a profile or "evocation." She sacrifices the impartial and detached position of the historian clearly in her prologue by declaring her great admiration for Bacon. And although she doesn't hide or ignore his faults, it's difficult to read any page and not feel Bowen's awe and respect for her subject. There is much to admire about Bacon: his broad and deep learning (he seemed to be an "expert" on every subject, from law to botany); his wit (this a verbal exchange between Bacon and his arch-enemy Edward Coke: "Mr. Bacon!" says Coke. "If you have any tooth against me, pluck it out, for it will do you more hurt than all the teeth in your head will do you good." "Mr. Attorney!" (Coke was the Attorney General), retorts Bacon. "I respect you, I fear you not, and the less you speak of your greatness, the more I will think of it." (Ouch!); his books such as NOVUM ORGANUM and THE ADVANCEMENT OF LEARNING, still regarded highly today; his life-long wish to found a university in England that would employ the scientific method in its pursuit of knowledge and not the old schoolman methods.

But there is also much to disdain: his bluntness; his naivete with regard to his enemies; his inability to control his spending impulses; his almost outrageous ostentation with his scores of servants, men in waiting, etc. He also had what came to become a most unpopular belief, that the king was above the law.

What makes Bowen's portrait of Bacon worth reading is her marvelous writing style. She is a descendant of the old-school of historical writing (Parkman and Prescott come to mind) that was as much of a literary bent as an historical one. She writes beautiful prose, worthy of her subject and the age in which he lived. Reading her book is a most enjoyable experience.

"There is no thought to be taken about precedents, for there is no precedent."

Bacon wrote this line about his approach to understanding nature and it seems wrong. Of course there were precedents. Many natural philosophers before Bacon had carefully studied nature. Scientists contemporary with Bacon like Galileo went well beyond him in actually describing the world. But what sets Bacon apart, and what actually was unprecedented, was his laying out on paper a new path for studying the book of nature strictly as it presents itself - what we call the inductive method. We know today that his method, usually called simple induction, was naïve and inaccurate for describing what actually happens in science. But Bacon's insistence that, in order to break through the prejudices of words and the straitjacket of medieval logic, we must back off and let nature tell us what it will - this was first laid out by Francis Bacon, Lord Chancellor of England. It was a unique contribution to the revolution in science and physics that was happening in Europe. While Descartes trusted his mind and mistrusted his senses, Bacon mistrusted the mind and argued that what the senses tell us must be the starting point.

Bacon had two overriding goals in life. One was to rise politically and socially. His father was Lord Chancellor of England and his youngest son was determined to reach his father's achievement, something he eventually did. But Bacon's other goal was to live a contemplative life of writing where he could examine the beauty of nature that he loved to be around and write down the method of discovery unencumbered by the Scholastic framework. These goals were almost always in conflict and Catherine Drinker Bowen does a great job of showing their constant tension in Bacon's life. I had no idea of all the political ups and downs that Bacon went through. After spending most of his life climbing the social ladder, he is impeached as Lord Chancellor for bribes which he fully admitted and actually spent time in the Tower. (But, as King James said, if he were to punish all those that took bribes in his kingdom, he would soon have no subjects left.) Then, in disgrace, Bacon writes some of his best work in his last five years; he finally had time for the full contemplative life. His honesty and insight about himself and the world around him is remarkable for his time. As Bowen notes, sometimes you have to read Bacon to actually believe he wrote what he did. Bowen gives many examples of his aphorisms, a literary form Bacon favored. On the other hand, despite his thoughtfulness and honesty, his flaws such as his complete inability to handle money intelligently plagued him throughout his life. All of this is brought out well in this biography.

As another reviewer notes, Bowen's writing style has a literary flare to it. She says things like: "Never was mortal man so busy" or "Lady Bacon fired off her heavy guns." The result for me was to create less distance between author and reader. The sense given is that the reader is being taken along on this journey. I thoroughly enjoyed Bowen's style. If I have any criticism of the book, it is that Bowen could have spent a little more time spelling out Bacon's philosophical innovations in the history of science. She does cover those but the majority of the book is spent on the political and social aspects of Bacon's life. But this book was not written specifically for a scientific audience and clearly the most wrenching and life-changing events in Bacon's life were due to his social and political aspirations. As an overall biography of the man, the book is excellent. For breathing life into a critical person in the history of science that we know very little about, I highly recommend Bowen's book.

Best for train, not New York City, buffs

Don't be misled by the title into thinking that this book is mainly about the history of the NYC subway system. While the genesis of the NYC subway is covered, particularly the first IRT line, it forms only a modest part of the book, which also describes the start of the Boston, London, Glasgow and other subways, and the development of the commuter rail network into New York City. The book also dwells a lot on the physical, mechanical and electrical attributes of rolling stock, electricity supply, line construction methods, etc., for the various systems. While this does put the NYC subway system into context, it doesn't make for a particularly "light" read or give the reader an overall perspective on how the entire NYC subway system developed during the past 100 years and its impact on the city.

Who better than Brian Cudahy?

New York's subway system has been written about, painted, painted on, talked about, griped about, even sung about. (Don't sleep on the subway, darling...) There are a fair number of books about it, most of them are technical. And the technical achievements of the subways system are amazing.
But only Brian Cudahy can write with the excitement and enthusiasm for this complex transit system to bring its history and experience to life. The word "Celebrating" in the subtitle is more indicative of his attitude than the bland "A Century of Subways." He starts with the asphyxiating conditions of Manhattan's streets immediately before 1900, and the need of developers, businessmen, and employers alike to expand into the other boroughs. This system, once built, would ease the overcrowding of Manhattan's slums, provide capital for real estate and housing barons in Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and northernmost Manhattan, and turn places like Coney Island into true party spots.
Of course, skeptics did abound: "New Yorkers will never go into a hole in the ground." And this is where Brian Cudahy then delivers to us the fanfare, thrills and--efficiency (!)--of the first subway ride, as bystanders cheered from clean, beautiful (!!) subway stations. At the center of it all is August Belmont, and the admiration Cudahy has for him is evident. Yet he doesn't resort to worshipping the tycoon/developer.
A CENTURY OF SUBWAYS is a fun and educational book. Its tone is miles away from his sober, but equally fascinating book, THE MALBONE STREET WRECK. While this disaster was waiting to happen in 1918, Cudahy, in A CENTURY OF SUBWAYS, savors the joyful moments of 1904.

This is an excellent book for someone just getting into the business. Not just for rockers, either! Easy to read and understand. The best part is, this guy's not bitter about the whole industry! It's great to read a book that doesn't just tell you how horrible everything is in this business and how you are destined to fail! He just gives you the facts along with great anecdotes.

The Musician's Handbook - An Excellent Guide to the Music Industry!

Bobby Borg has penned an excellent guide to the music industry. The 288 page soft cover book, "The Musician's Handbook" is jam packed with clear information on what you need to do to accomplish your goals.

Building from Chapter 1: Important Tips to Consider On Your Path to Success to the Afterword: The Future of the Music Business, Bobby lays out the tips, techniques and tools to help you build your career and avoid many of the pitfalls of the music industry.

While there are a number of music industry books that describe how to deal with copyrites, finding the key players in your career, what to look for in a record deal etc Bobby takes it a step further. In the first chapter, Bobby shares dozens of tips to help you get started - the basics. For the new musician starting out Chapter 1 is a true gift that can save literally hours of time. When my singer/songwriter daughter was making her first demo we felt showing her range and diversity was key. Even though she knew she wanted to sing pop, we spent hours looking for songs that would show how she could "sing everything". We weren't sure how many songs to include on her CD, what her press kit should include etc. We figured this out through trial and error and asking lots of questions, had we had Bobby's book we could have saved a lot of time. My daughter has been approached with tons of offers both real and fake. We have learned to not take things at face value, to check everything out, to get things in writing. We spent a lot of time that you can save by reading the first chapter. This first chapter also includes info on what makes a song a hit, networking and more.

Though the book explains some pretty complex information, Bobby writes in a clear, easy to read style and includes lots of anecdotes to spice up the text. Each chapter covers the topic in great detail. The chapter on Live Performing and Touring for example, covers the nitty gritty of the costs and realities of live performing. Information runs the gamut from the early stages of touring to touring in the big leagues, different ways you can be paid, contracts and riders, getting the gigs and more. And it includes fascinating little sidenotes like the Top Ten Rider Countdown (Iggy Pop requested a Bob Hope impersonator be backstage!)

Chapters include Chapter 1: Important Tips to Consider on Your Path to Success Chapter 2: Band Membership Chapter 3: Contract Employment and Self-Employment Chapter 4: Solo Artist and Employer Chapter 5: Your Attorney Chapter 6: Your Personal Manager Chapter 7: Your Business Manager Chapter 8: Your Talent Agent Chapter 9: Your Record Producer Chapter 10: Record Royalties, Advances and Deals Chapter11: Music Publishing Chapter 12: Live Performing and Touring Chapter 13: Merchandising Afterword: The Future of the Music Business. Borg also includes an index at the back, so you can access the information you need quickly. A number of resources are given throughout the text; where to share your music for podcast purposes, unions, performining rights organizations, recommended books etc.

Overall an outstanding resource for the new musician and an excellent guide and sourcebook for the accomplished artist. Highly recommended!

Based on the lives , culture and experiences of the greats who wrote them ; Debra picturesquely reveals humble , sometimes spiritual sometimes sexual, not always socially acceptable, but always entertaining origins of the beloved Language of the Blues

With a foreword by Dr John and comments by contemporary greats Bonnie Raitt and Bob Margolin , this book simply has to be in every blues lovers library.

Comprehensive to say the least!

Being from Chicago, the "home away from home' of the Mississippi blues roots, as well as being a heavily blues influenced guitarist here for over 20 years, having even opened a show for Muddy Waters, I thought I knew most all there was about blues vernacular. Then I read Debra DeSalvo's "The Language Of The Blues" and realized how much I didn't know...

This book is the most comprehensive title I've ever read on the blues and the history of the blues. If you read blues history, bluesman's biographies, or are even a scholar of the genre, this book is as invaluable as Roget's Thesaurus to any author.

Excellent piece of work and should be required reading in any school of music teaching the blues as the art form it is.

So much research must have gone into the making of this book. I love finding out the origins of sayings and words and Debra has explored the infinite possibilities with enthusiasm and humor. If you have any interest in music, history, or words, this book is a must read!
