The Media Company / Industry Primer
By Fred Cheyunski
This reviewer concurs with the book descriptions about the value of Picard's "The Economics and Financing of Media Companies." For instance, he clearly uses business concepts and analyses, vivid examples, and rich charts and tables.

More specifically, the book's chapters seem to group into several major themes and help provide an overview. Namely, chapters 1 and 2 ("Media Firms as Economic and Business Entities", "Business Models, Workflows, and Value Chains in Media Firms") offer context and frameworks. Chapters 4 to 8 ("Distribution and Retail Sales," "Economic Forces Affecting Media," "The Influence of the General Economy on Media," "Audiences and Consumers," "Media, Advertisers, and Advertising," and "Competition in Media Markets") cover major environmental factors. In chapters 9 to 12 ("Concepts in Media Financing and Financial Management," "Capital Markets and Media Firms," "The Development of Large Media Companies," and "Trade and Globalization in Media Products and Services" ) finances and economics are addressed in detail. Finally, chapter 13 ("Indicators of Financial and Economic Health of Media Firms") provides a basis for on-going analysis.

As indicated, the diagrams and tables are particularly helpful in revealing the nature of media companies. Particular favorite tables of this reviewer include "Characteristics of Media Firms," "Business Development in Different Life Cycle Stages" and the "Location of Media Companies in Life Cycle Stages." Preferred diagrams include "General Value Chains of Media Firms," "Factors Affecting Sustainability of Media Firms," and "Financial Flow in Media with Revenue from Advertising and Circulation."

Inserts are especially telling and assist in understanding developments in the industry particularly with the continuing trend of media "going digital." Take for instance "Changing Newspaper Business Models," "Implications of the Changing Media World," "Changes in Business Models of On-line Content Services," and "Are New Media New Products and Services?"

Moreover, for this reviewer, this book serves as very good example of a key industry primer, resource, and reference. Not only is it a primary source to go back to time and time again for media businesses, it serves as an example for the type of resource that would be helpful for other industries as well.

What life is really like on the road
By Karl K.
Marley has used her years of experience and hundreds of "connections" in the business to compile an outstanding collection of short stories from "the road." Starting in the sixties and running up through present day she gives the reader the "insider's view" of what really happens backstage and behind the scenes in the music business. The stories are short, to the point, and absolutely real (I can verify this since I was a part of this life as a Roadie back in my youth). I highly recommend this book for anyone who has been to a concert in the past 40 years and had a good time, you won't be sorry.

Blues had his baby breech
By GA Roadie
This was a great read ! Anyone who thinks the industry is all about the big names is misguided. It is all about those who stay true to their music and lifestyles. Speaking of blues, for everyone who made it big, how many are playing away in the clubs that no one really heard of but listen to every chance they get.

This book is great and it looks at the real rocker. If you want stories on the elite fringe of the 1% get Kitty Kelly to write it. I want the skinny on the people who make up the masses of rock.

Roadies Rule !
By roadiegirl
I will admit I am partial to biographies and rock 'n roll, so this latest offer from Brant held the promise of being a good read. What I found was a great variety of personal stories which ranged from "hooting 'n hollaring" to reflective and even soulful. I've read many music books and most of them talk about "The Road." This book lets the artists, roadies and fans take you right into this integral part of their lives. It's a great book and I strongly recommend it.

Reading Publics: New York City's Public Libraries, 1754-1911 (Empire State Editions), by Tom Glynn

This lively, nuanced history of New York City's early public libraries traces their evolution within the political, social, and cultural worlds that supported them.

On May 11, 1911, the New York Public Library opened its "marble palace for book lovers" on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. This was the city's first public library in the modern sense, a tax-supported, circulating collection free to every citizen. Since before the Revolution, however, New York's reading publics had access to a range of "public libraries" as the term was understood by contemporaries. In its most basic sense a public library in the eighteenth and most of the nineteenth centuries simply meant a shared collection of books that was available to the general public and promoted the public good. From the founding in 1754 of the New York Society Library up to 1911, public libraries took a variety of forms. Some of them were free, charitable institutions, while others required a membership or an annual subscription. Some, such as the Biblical Library of the American Bible Society, were highly specialized; others, like the Astor Library, developed extensive, inclusive collections. What all the public libraries of this period had in common, at least ostensibly, was the conviction that good books helped ensure a productive, virtuous, orderly republic-that good reading promoted the public good.

Tom Glynn's vivid, deeply researched history of New York City's public libraries over the course of more than a century and a half illuminates how the public and private functions of reading changed over time and how shared collections of books could serve both public and private ends. Reading Publics examines how books and reading helped construct social identities and how print functioned within and across groups, including but not limited to socioeconomic classes. The author offers an accessible while scholarly exploration of how republican and liberal values, shifting understandings of "public" and "private," and the debate over fiction influenced the development and character of New York City's public libraries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Reading Publics is an important contribution to the social and cultural history of New York City that firmly places the city's early public libraries within the history of reading and print culture in the United States.

Review

"A deeply researched, well-written, and solid contribution to library history literature that will not only interest members of the library profession, but also scholars and students of intellectual, cultural, social, urban, and print culture history whose own research has been heavily influenced by the rich collections Glynn discusses." -Wayne Wiegand, Professor of Library and Information Studies Emeritus, Florida State University.

"With humor and sensitivity as well as exemplary scholarship Tom Glynn vividly recounts the story of libraries open to the public prior to the creation of the New York Public Library, and of their readers. Throughout he explores major themes of republican values for reading and information, liberalism, shifting understandings of public and private, and the debate over fiction. By concentrating on New York, Glynn provides a nuanced interpretation of the development of public libraries in a city that holds a unique position in the national imagination, and in so doing makes a significant contribution to the histories of readers and reading, of libraries, and of American culture."--Christine Pawley, University of Wisconsin-Madison

" . . . Tom Glynn recalls how the libraries were transformed into a uniquely accessible resource through a public-private partnership made possible by Gilded Age philanthropy."--Sam Roberts, The New York Times

"For anyone studying the history of public libraries this will be an essential work of reference, but it is also full of interest for anyone wishing to know more of the social and cultural history of New York generally"--Ian McGowan, Alexandria: The Journal of National and International Library and Information Issues

Amazon.com Review
Trina Schart Hyman used to pretend she was Little Red Riding Hood when she was a little girl, wearing a red cape sewn by her mother. Her love for this character permeates her award-winning retelling of the traditional Grimm story, even as Grandma and Little Red get eaten alive by the wolf and then saved by the kindly woodsman (illustrated carefully with a minimum of violence). Little Red learns her lessons--to keep her promises, to stay on the path, to mind her manners, and to avoid talking to big, bad wolves--lessons parents still try to teach their children many generations after the Brothers Grimm first recorded this story.

For over 20 years, readers young and old have loved Hyman's illustrations of children's books, fairy tales, and folk tales--most notably the Caldecott Honor Book Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric Kimmel, and The Fortune Tellers by Lloyd Alexander. Her illustrations for Saint George and the Dragon, by Margaret Hodges, won the Caldecott Medal. (Ages 3 to 6)

Portrait Painting Atelier: Old Master Techniques and Contemporary Applications, by Suzanne Brooker

The art of portraiture approached its apex during the sixteenth century in Europe with the discovery of oil painting when the old masters developed and refined techniques that remain unsurpassed to this day. The ascendance of nonrepresentational art in the middle of the twentieth century displaced these venerable skills, especially in academic art circles. Fortunately for aspiring artists today who wish to learn the methods that allowed the Old Masters to achieve the luminous color and subtle tonalities so characteristic of their work, this knowledge has been preserved in hundreds of small traditional painting ateliers that persevered in the old ways in this country and throughout the world.

Coming out of this dedicated movement, Portrait Painting Atelier is an essential resource for an art community still recovering from a time when solid instruction in art technique was unavailable in our schools. Of particular value here is a demonstration of the Old Masters’ technique of layering paint over a toned-ground surface, a process that builds from the transparent dark areas to the more densely painted lights. This method unifies the entire painting, creating a beautiful glow that illuminates skin tones and softly blends all the color tones. Readers will also find valuable instruction in paint mediums from classic oil-based to alkyd-based, the interactive principles of composition and photograph-based composition, and the anatomy of the human face and the key relationships among its features.

Richly illustrated with the work of preeminent masters such as Millet, Géricault, and van Gogh, as well as some of today’s leading portrait artists—and featuring seven detailed step-by-step portrait demonstrations—Portrait Painting Atelier is the first book in many years to so comprehensively cover the concepts and techniques of traditional portraiture.

Decent enough on portrait techniques.
By Tom Kosmo
This book contains some valuable information and tips on this difficult topic. The skin tone colour mixing part is especially helpful, and the illustrations are informative and high quality. I really like the way it goes into detail on different elements of the face, on application of paint and on toned grounds. Nevertheless, this book suffers from the same problem as all of them do. The step by step demonstrations are all made by the author/artist himself. This results in a lot of demonstrations basically using the same approach in different variations. I would really like to see a book of this kind with demonstrations by different artists, displaying different approaches and techniques! If you are very interested in glazing techniques, this should really satisfy you, since all the demonstrations involve a lot of glazing. That beeing said, the book actually includes a mini-demonstration by another artist with a different approach.

All in all a great book for the intermediate painter who wants to learn more about depicting the human form.

Good overview of technique
By Trader100
The author presents a coherent approach to painting in traditional "Old Master" style. To absorb the wealth of
valuable information takes several readings, as well as working through the exercises and much practice. Techniqes
are clearly described.
There are some impressive examples of painted portraits -- but not by the author. The step by step demos she herself
does are not inspiring and result in stiff, "tight", uninteresting images.
This book will be most useful to painters who have some experience and have already encountered the technical issues the author describes. Beginners will probably find it overwhelming.
Incidentally, the author's mentor Domenic Cretara, who supplies the introduction, is a modern master in his own
right, and his work is well worth looking up online.

Big disappointment
By Napa Artist
This book doesn't quite live up to other "Atelier" books by Watson-Guptill. it presents a rather timid approach to portraiture (glaze here, scumble there...). On top of that, some of the technical information is inaccurate: "flesh ochre" is NOT a pigment (page 39) -- it is a hue; "ASTM D-4236" is NOT a "color code" (page 41) but rather the labeling standard for potential health hazards in art materials; "PR101" is the color index designation for synthetic red earth pigments, not its "chemical description"; "rosso veneto", "pozzuoli red" and "terra rosa" are NOT "core red earth pigments" (page 54) -- these are variations in hues of the same pigment class (red iron oxide pigments, either PR101 or PR102) which can vary from brand to brand!; the author also states that "a well-balanced selection of glazing pigments would include lapis lazuli" (page 40) which is such bad advice because lapis lazuli in oil paint form is rarely available and prohibitively expensive. Of course, she fails to mention that ultramarine blue (PB29) is a synthetic and far cheaper alternative to it. Although there is a section entitled "the nature of pigments" (page 39), the author does not discuss or explain color indexes -- the standard and critical pigment information that is used by almost all artists' paint manufacturers today on their paint tube labels. The author (on page 150, etc.) misuses the term "scumble" (which is to apply a thin layer of lighter, more opaque color over a darker color) when she actually meant "glaze" (application of a thin layer of darker, more transparent paint over a lighter color)... AND THE LIST GOES ON. These technical inaccuracies aside, the step-by-step demonstrations are also such disappointing specimens. I would not recommend this book.

How to Be an Intellectual: Essays on Criticism, Culture, and the University, by Jeffrey J. Williams

Over the past decade, Jeffrey J. Williams has been one of the most perceptive observers of contemporary literary and cultural studies. He has also been a shrewd analyst of the state of American higher education. How to Be an Intellectual brings together noted and new essays and exemplifies Williams's effort to bring criticism to a wider public

How to Be an Intellectual profiles a number of critics, drawing on a unique series of interviews that give an inside look at their work and careers. The book often looks at critical thought from surprising angles, examining, for instance, the history of modern American criticism in terms of its keywords as they morphed from sound to rigorous to smart. It also puts in plain language the political travesty of higher education policies that produce student debt, which, as Williams demonstrates, all too readily follow the model of colonial indenture, not just as a metaphor but in actual point of fact.

How to Be an Intellectual tells a story of intellectual life since the culture wars. Shedding academic obscurity and calling for a better critical writing, it reflects on what makes the critic and intellectual the accidents of careers, the trends in thought, the institutions that shape us, and politics. It also includes personal views of living and working with books.

Unique and Illuminating Reflections on the Politics and Culture of Contemporary University Life
By Robert Francis
This book offers a series of reflections on academic life in the late twentieth century, focusing on topics that many scholars are curious about but are not often explored in much depth.

What can scholars learn from journalists, and why don’t more of them try to write more accessibly? What institutional codes will be violated if they were to do so, and why are they there? Another key theme is how the careers of certain exemplary figures in the university in the past two or three generations were possible in a practical sense—how they were shaped by the politics and economics of the period—and why such careers are no longer viable? What made the age of theory possible? Why did it seem so compelling at the time, and how did it come to an end? Finally, what are the effects of the privatization of the university and the rise of student debt on the aspirations of individual scholars and intellectuals?

Williams addresses these issues piecemeal, but they offer an illuminating perspective on the many currents that have the shaped the recent evolution of the university and its future.

I especially enjoyed the pieces on the lives and careers of notable figures like Rorty, Eagleton, and Ross—but also lesser known figures closer to Williams himself. The essays highlight the shift over the course of generations of methods, concerns, and disciplinary boundaries—and their connection to larger social and political conditions. For someone who came of age in the university in the nineties, during the denouement of theory, the book was effective at articulating what made it a more exciting place to be at then and why this is no longer true.

Finally, the book adds to a body of work on the corporatization of the university. Williams’ contribution is to focus on the role of student debt and its cascading consequences for both the academy and democracy itself. I was most intrigued by the argument about what debt teaches students, or the way it inclines them to think of their education primarily as a transaction, a service, a form of job training inseparable from the later career that will redeem the investment. His reflections on debt helped explain the recent rise of business as a major and the drop in enrolment in the humanities better than any other I’ve come across.

The book is unique for its focus on biographical and political aspects of academic life, but also for its readable style. Its primary strength is the subtlety and ingenuity of many of its insights. It gave me a richer understanding of the university and my experience in it.

What, Indeed, is an Intellectual
By tom abeles
This volume is a compilation of articles previously published by the author, many of which can be accessed via an Internet search. The author is a professor of English. Therefore, the volume appears to be more of a reader or part of a flipped classroom where these selectively serve as grounds for discussion.

There are two, serious, underlying themes running through the volume. These are stylistically academic, aimed at individuals who are in universities or are who have an affiliation or interest in the post secondary world. One of these is on the well-trodden path of increasing volume of literature on student debt both within the United States and globally.

Here Williams evokes the idea of “indenture” as he describes the student, compiling debt, to obtain a degree. He sees this as equivalent to the individuals in England who sold themselves into indenture in order to fulfill the dream of a better life in America. The student incurs the debt to arrive at the land of opportunity in the job markets while the English to access the new world’s untapped resources not accessible at home. “Student Debt and the Spirit of Indenture”, originally published in Dissent in 2008, seen from the vantage point of 2014, seems dated. It is a discussion piece in a class or a springboard for a subsequent essay. It should have been the lead article both to frame the issues of student debt and to be an original piece tying together the various themes around the definition of, and functions of, an intellectual.

In this volume, the value of the piece is severely attenuated by Williams own perceived indenture as a student, that of his daughter’s college debt and the larger, current, plight of the academic in the humanities. Williams’ myopia as he binds his efforts to define the idea of the “intellectual’ within the academic frame of the humanities. Again, the idea of the volume as a “reader” for a seminar or course releases him from having to define clearly the essence of the intellectual or to consider that the “intellectual” knows no such academic bounds. Sokal’s brilliant hoax published in Social Text, the collections of deep thinkers, many in the sciences often adumbrate the current academics in the humanities strivings to be recognized as intellectuals outside of their arena of expertise. HASTAC, an interdisciplinary community of thought leaders and students, proves much of the efforts of the humanities to define the “intellectual” to be a bridge too far. In fact HASTAC goes out of its way to bridge the differences.

Williams’ essays are unable to stray far from the academic paradigm of needing historic references from and about other scholars in general and academics in particular in order to validate their own writing. There are though a number of interesting contrasts in the collection including the comparison of Richard Rorty and Andrew Ross. But, while the analysis of these two scholars is of interest, Williams fails to point out the deep similarities of both including their willingness to step outside of the humanities, Rorty into politics and Ross, the polymath following his intellectual instincts to address topics that come across his desk, much in the spirit of the Social Text blog. “Bird on Fire” is but one example.

As Williams notes, most of his essays in this collection are “short” unlike the early intellectual works such as those of Isaiah Berlin, or even John Gray. Yet Williams’ articles lack disciplined rigor and intellectual density, and exhibit a dependency on the work of others. As noted above, this material best suits its purpose to begin conversations about the subject and do not provide the complexity to challenge the reader to a deeper reading of the articles themselves

Williams makes the point that journalist’s muse or god is Hermes, representing speed whereas scholars look to Apollo-the spread between the populist need for fleeting and the immediate while the academics favor that which provokes contemplative and critical analysis. Where the “intellectual” fits within that spectrum in an Internet driven world of materials, 24X7, is not clear in this volume and not even clear within the periods where most of Williams’ material is drawn.

Williams points out that Stanley Fish pushes for English scholars to stick to their own discipline and leave the political issues to those in other fields. Humanities scholars, threatened by the decreasing funding for their narrow disciplines, are hard pressed to not step outside of these confines and use their professional skills to address larger issues in much the same manner that those in science, technology and medicine find the need to cross these boundaries as both practioners and intellectuals.

Williams does not address the parochial nature of some in the humanities but rather plays the academic provocateur in this collection. Williams skirts the idea of the role of the “critic”. But, in the end, the volume serves more as an example of the critic rather than the intellectual.

Excellent book
By Fuffy & Lloyd
This is a first class research tool. This book is perfect for the music collector who wants to know what songs charted and when by any given artist. What is really great about this book is it covers songs from 1944 through 2005. It also has sections to rank the top singles and artists from Billboard publishing. This is not a fan club book. This is a factual report of actual recording success by artist.

Aspects of Alterity: Levinas, Marcel, and the Contemporary Debate (Perspectives in Continental Philosophy), by Brian Treanor

Every other is truly other, but no other is wholly other. This is the claim that Aspects of Alterity defends. Taking up the question of otherness that so fascinates contemporary continental philosophy, this book asks what it means for something or someone to be other than the self. Levinas and those influenced by him point out that the philosophical tradition of the West has generally favored the self at the expense of the other. Such a self-centered perspective never encounters the other qua other, however. In response, postmodern thought insists on the absolute otherness of the other, epitomized by the deconstructive claim every other is wholly other. But absolute otherness generates problems and aporias of its own. This has led some thinkers to reevaluate the notion of relative otherness in light of the postmodern critique, arguing for a chiastic account that does justice to both the alterity and the similitude of the other. These latter two positions-absolute otherness and a rehabilitated account of relative otherness-are the main contenders in the contemporary debate. The philosophies of Emmanuel Levinas and Gabriel Marcel provide the point of embarkation for coming to understand the two positions on this question. Levinas and Marcel were contemporaries whose philosophies exhibit remarkably similar concern for the other but nevertheless remain fundamentally incompatible. Thus, these two thinkers provide a striking illustration of both the proximity of and the unbridgeable gap between two accounts of otherness.Aspects of Alterity delves into this debate, first in order understand the issues at stake in these two positions and second to determine which description better accounts for the experience of encountering the other. After a thorough assessment and critique of otherness in Levinas's and Marcel's work, including a discussion of the relationship of ethical alterity to theological assumptions, Aspects of Alterity traces the transmission and development of these two conceptions of otherness. Levinas's version of otherness can be seen in the work of Jacques Derrida and John D. Caputo, while Marcel's understanding of otherness influences the work of Paul Ricoeur and Richard Kearney.Ultimately, Aspects of Alterity makes a case for a hermeneutic account of otherness. Otherness itself is not absolute, but is a chiasm of alterity and similitude. Properly articulated, such an account is capable of addressing the legitimate ethical and epistemological concerns that lead thinkers to construe otherness in absolute terms, but without the absolute aporiasthat accompany such a characterization.

Language Without Soil: Adorno and Late Philosophical ModernityFrom Fordham University Press

Theodor W. Adorno's multifaceted work has exerted a profound impact on far-ranging discourses and critical practices in late modernity. His analysis of the fate of art following its alleged end, of ethical imperatives after Auschwitz,of the negative dialectic of myth and freedom from superstition, of the manipulation of consciousness by the unequal siblings of fascism and the culture industry, and of the narrowly-conceived concept of reason that has given rise to an unprecedented exploitation of nature and needless human suffering, all speak to central concerns of our time. The essays collected here analyze the full range of implications emanating from Adorno's demand that the task of critical thinking be to imagine a mode of being in the world that occurs in and through a language that has liberated itself from the spell of an alleged historical and political inevitability, what he once tellingly called a language without soil.Adorno' s finely chiseled sentences perform a ceaseless gesture of thoughtful vigilance, a vigilance understood not in the sense of moralizing or ethical normativity but of a rigorous attention to the presuppositions of thinking itself. The volume's fresh readings conspire to yield a refractory and unorthodox Adorno, a suggestive and at times infuriating thinker of the first order, whose intellectual gestures sponsor politically conscious modes of theoretical speculation in a late modernity that may still have a future because its language and aspirations are without soil. Also included is an annotated translation of a seminal interview Adorno gave in 1969 concerning the relationship of Critical Theory to political activism. In it, the dialectical interplay between thought and action forcefully emerges.

Review

This is a magical volume. These beautiful essays transform the most canonical works of Adorno from monuments we thought we knew into opportunities for future thought. The Adorno of this volume is neither a matter of the past nor a straightforward thought machine, but rather an intricate, challenging, searching plurality of voices that are, at times, at odds with each other. In other words, this is a new Adorno, an Adorno not yet known to us, not yet explored, and an Adorno not yet complete. This new Adorno is a matter of the future, of reading, and discovery.-Fritz Breithaupt

A very thoughtfully comprised and well executed collection with a numberof insightful contributions that individually and as a whole open up new perspectives in Adorno scholarship.-Eva Geulen
