The book follows the historical adventures of the idea of qi through some of its Confucian and Daoist textual histories in East Asia, mainly Laozi, Zhu Xi, Toegye, Nongmun, and Su-un, and compares them with analogous conceptualizations of the ultimate creative and spiritual power found in the intellectual constellations of Western and/or Christian thought namely, Whitehead's Creativity, Hegel's Geist, Deleuze's chaosmos, and Catherine Keller's Tehom.

The book adds to the growing body of pneumatocentric (Spirit-centered), panentheistic Christian theologies that emphasize God's liberating, equalizing, and pluralizing immanence in the cosmos. Furthermore, it injects into the theological and philosophical dialogue between the West and Confucian and Daoist East Asia, which has heretofore been dominated by the American pragmatist and process traditions, a fresh voice shaped by Hegelian, postmodern, and postcolonial thought. This enriches the ways in which the pluralistic and democratic implications of the notion of qi may be articulated. In addition, by offering a valuable introduction to some representative Korean thinkers who are largely unknown to Western scholars, the book advances the study of East Asia and Neo-Confucianism in particular.

Last but not least, the book provides a model of Asian contextual theology that draws on the religious and philosophical resources of East Asia to offer a vision of pluralism and democracy. A reader interested in the conversation between the East and West in light of the global reality of political oppression, economic exploitation, and cultural marginalization will find this book informative, engaging, and enlightening

By returning to the moment at which biopolitics is said to emerge simultaneously with romanticism, this project renews our understanding of the operations of contemporary politics and its relation to aesthetics across two centuries.

Guyer focuses on a single, exemplary case: the poetry and autobiographical writing of the British poet John Clare (1793-1864). Reading Clare in combination with contemporary theories of biopolitics, Guyer reinterprets romanticism's political legacies, specifically the belief that romanticism is a direct precursor to the violent nationalisms and redemptive environmentalisms of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Guyer offers an alternative account of many of romanticism's foundational concepts, like home, genius, creativity, and organicism. She shows that contemporary critical theories of biopolitics, despite repeatedly dismissing the aesthetic or poetic dimensions of power as a culpable ideology, emerge within the same rhetorical tradition as the romanticism they denounce. The book thus compels a rethinking of the biopolitical critique of poetry and an attendant reconsideration of romanticism and its concepts.

Understanding Religion Beyond "Rationality"

An interesting and useful supplement to a field historically dominated by analytic philosophers' concentration on what is "true," "rational," and "coherent," this volume provides a number of essays (varied in both content and usefulness) that provide a Continental investigation into a philosophy of religion. Continental approaches to questioning the limits of rationality, the responsibility to the other, analogy, and mystical theology all serve to further and better explain what we mean when we speak philosophically of religion.

Philip Goodchild's introductory survey is especially helpful as an overview of the history and the issues involved. Contributors run the gamut from feminist approaches (Grace Jantzen and Pamela Sue Anderson) to traditional Continental philosophers (Matthew Halteman) to staunch religious believers who see a possible confluence between Continental thought and religious belief (Radical Orthodoxy proponent Graham Ward and Catholic thinker Gregory Sandler). An excellent text for philosophers and students - especially recommended as a supplement to traditional analytic textbooks for universities.

About the Author
Tomie De Paola is internationally recognized for having written and illustrated many children's books, including "The Lady of Guadalupe", "The Clown of God", "Cat on the Doverfell", "Big Anthony and the Magic Ring", and "Strega Nona", a Caldecott Honor book. Using watercolours and inks in this book to create full-colour illustrations, Mr. de Paola is faithful to the text. Since St. Nicholas is described in the poem as "a right jolly old elf," the artist has made him elflike, and shows him driving a miniature sleigh with eight tiny reindeer. Mr. de Paola has set the poem in a mid-nineteenth century New England town, using quilt designs from his own collection for the borders. This is the 100th book he has illustrated.

Traditional Irish (and Scottish and Manx and...) tale, retold

First let me note that if you want to read up more about this character of folklore you should use a more common rendition of his name such as Finn McCool or Fionn mac Cumhaill. If you believe the stories, he was singlehandedly responsible for much of the geography of Ireland and Scotland, in the same way that Paul Bunyan is responsible for the Great Lakes!

The story is hilarious, from Fin's worries to his tricky solution to his problem of not wanting to fight, and the illustrations only enhance the words.

I will note that, like most traditional stories, there is some gratuitous violence, but what can you do? That's how the story goes. Besides, most children are such bloodthirsty beasts that they're quite happy with fingers getting bitten off, so long as it's clearly over-the-top and unrealistic :)

However, if that's the sort of thing that concerns you then you should definitely read this book before you buy it.

Just ok

My husband was going to my sons school to be Secret Reader in March - My hubby is from Ireland. ;)
We bought this book for him to read to the class. It is a story my husband grew up knowing and thought it would be a cute read for them. The book was cute and okay for our house - but not something I would want to bring to school to read to the kids. It is only because of the sensitivity for violence in this day and age. I totally get this is folk lore - you can't change what had been written SO many years ago - thet was this story is told, is the way it should be!! I just felt uncomfortable telling the tale to a group of 5 & 6 year olds that weren't mine. The violence is NOT that bad - but it's still in there. The Giant bites the other giants finger off - they fight - blah, blah, blah. I found another version of the book that was more like an easy reader - they toned the violence down - We just thought it was a better fit for children in a school setting! We went with -Traditional Tales Finn MacCool and the Giant's Causeway - Stage 8 book

love this book! They "get" the trick Smart Oonah played on Cucullin. They squeal with delight when he bites down and breaks his teeth. It's not every day the bully gets his due.
It has nothing to do with St. Patrick's Day but I read it each year and they've never been bored!

The simplified surroundings focus attention on the action that fills the pages. Readers watch as reporters gather facts, Rabbit writes an editorial, and the features editor assigns reporters to cover the arts, sports, foods, and personalities. Business must be served, so advertisements are solicited. Finally, all articles and advertisements must be in by the deadline so that the paper can be printed and distributed. The final pages include a list of steps to follow when making a newspaper, with a glossary of newpaper terms. There's nothing like sitting down with a good book - or a good newspaper. This book gives young kids the advantages of both. In simple language and with wonderful illustrations and characters, it explains the role of a newspaper and also the roles of those who work there. The wonderful cast of animals, whose interests aren't being addressed by the local media, decide to start a paper of their own. They track down stories, write opinions, review the arts, sell ads and papers and type, edit, paste up, print and deliver. The subtle humor won't be missed on adults.

This book reads somewhat like a comic book. It teaches children the behind the scenes look at the making of a newspaper.

Simple steps to drawing your first manga characters

If you're interested in manga but haven't really drawn anything before, this tracing book is a good place to start. Each of the 80 characters gives you four steps (basic head; add the figure; add details; finish). The end product is a very simple black and white manga figure such as "popstar girl" or "mecha character". The book is divided into three sections: manga characters, chibi characters, and chibi monsters -- because this book is actually a compilation of three books by the same author previously published separately: Xtreme Art Draw Manga (2003); Xtreme Art Draw Manga Chibi! (2004); and Xtreme Art Draw Manga Monsters! (2005). Each of these sections starts with very brief, but clear, tips on drawing -- for example, drawing eyes and hands. I especially liked the introduction to the chibi section that explained basic differences between chibi and regular manga characters. A simple, clear, introductory book to drawing characters.

Trains

This is a picture book by author and illustrator, Gail Gibbons. There are about 30 pages of brightly colored and detailed illustrations of the different types of trains, including early steam engines, diesel, electric and subway trains. Illustrations of tracks, tunnels and railroad stations are included. Also addressed is what happens inside trains: dining and sleeping. The different types of cargo that a freight train carries are illustrated. The last page shows different train signs and signals. This very informative book is presented in a simple way to keep a child interested.

A Must Have Favorite for Kids who Are Train Lovers!

I give this book five stars, not because I think the pictures are the best, but because this is THE favorite book right now of my 3 1/2 year old train loving son! The simple, factual text gives lots of helpful information for parents to talk with kids about the different kinds of trains there are (diesel, steam engine, electric etc.) and the various functions of a train. If your kid is into trains, this is a must have!

My 2 1/2 year old train-loving son wants this book to be read to him over and over again. The simple pictures and text give a nice overall explanation of trains to toddlers.

Jefferson, a Tuskegee Airman who was shot down during World War II and held in a German prison camp for nine months, recalls better treatment as a prisoner of war than as a black citizen in the U.S. He had been fascinated with airplanes since his childhood in Detroit, where he was born into a long line of clergymen and educators, who nonetheless suffered the racial indignities of the time. Jefferson went on to become a chemist when the chance to join the 332nd Fighter Group captured his imagination. He piloted a Red-Tail Angel, one of the planes assigned to protect bombers' crews. On his eighteenth mission, he was shot down over southern France and taken to Stalag Luft III, a camp primarily for captured British and American Air Force officers. While at the camp, he began recording observations of the cold, occasional shootings of prisoners, but mostly boredom and hunger. Later, he recorded his impressions of the ignominious welcome home reserved for black soldiers. Photographs and Jefferson's drawings during his imprisonment add to the fascination of this memoir. About the Author

Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, (USAF, Ret.) has degrees from Clark College and Wayne State University. He won numerous citations and remains active in Veterans' and Tuskegee Airmen organizations. He served in Michigan public schools for thirty years as a teacher and administrator, and lives outside Detroit in Southfield.

Lewis H. Carlson is co-author of Life behind Barbed Wire: The World War II Photographs of Prisoner of War Angelo M. Spinelli (Fordham).

Thank You Alexander Jefferson

Among the many groups to whom we owe more than we can ever repay there is the Tuskegee Airmen. Determined to become Army Air Crop pilots and to fight for America, these men enlisted in the army. In spite of the determination of some to make them fail, they didn't. In spite of a 'quota' as to how many would be allowed to graduate (not discovered until many years later) some 900 made it through the system. Most became fighter pilots, after all if they flew bombers they might have had white crewmen under them and in those days that just wouldn't do.

Lt. Jefferson made it through. And eventually he flew with the famous 332nd, the Red Tails. Most of the missions of the 332nd were to escort bombers. NO Bombers were ever lost to Enemy Aircraft while being escorted by the 332nd.

On his 19th mission Lt. Jefferson was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. He spent the next nine months in a German POW camp. When finally returned to the United States after being liberated he walked off the ship to be told, "Whites to the right, niggers to the left."

Thank you Alexander Jefferson for all that you did, including writing this book.

Excellent Memoir of a Distinguished WWII Veteran

Col. Jefferson has written an excellent personal memoir that is a unique addition to the literature of those who fought and served America so well in World War II and after. I bought the book after hearing the author speak (to a standing ovation) and was pleased to get the additional well written and presented detail of his experiences. His numerous drawings of the places he served, especially the POW camp, helped transport the reader to a better understanding than from merely a written description.

When the Sisters of Mercy lost their foundress Sister Catherine McAuley in 1841, stories of Mother Catherine passed from one generation of sisters to the next. In Women of Faith, Mary Beth Fraser Connolly traces the paths of the women who dedicated their lives to the Sisters of Mercy Chicago Regional Community, the first Congregation of Catholic Sisters in Chicago.

More than the story of the institutions that defined the territory and ministries of the women of this Midwestern region, Women of Faith presents a history of the women who made this regional community, whether as foundresses of individual communities in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries or as the teachers, nurses, and pastoral ministers who cared for and educated generations of Midwestern American Catholics. Though they had no immediate connection with McAuley, these women inherited her spirit and vision for religious life.

Focusing on how the Chicago Mercys formed a community, lived their spiritual lives, and served within the institutional Catholic Church, this three-part perspective addresses community, spirituality, and ministry, providing a means by which we can trace the evolution of these women of faith as the world around them changed. The first part of this study focuses on the origins of the Sisters of Mercy in the Midwest from the founding of the Chicago South Side community in 1846 through the amalgamation and creation of the Chicago Province in 1929. The second part examines how the Mercys came together as one province through the changes of Vatican II from 1929 to the 1980s. Part III examines life after the dramatic changes of Vatican II in the 1990s and 2000s.

Presenting rich examples of how faith cannot be separated from identity, Women of Faith provides an important new contribution to the scholarship that is shaping our collective understanding of women religious.

Catholic nuns as pioneers in the USA.

Chicago is a city with character. It gave us great writers, great artists, great musicians, and unfortunately some notorious criminals. Like most US cities, it was a boomtown that grew in spurts, and when urbanization happens to quickly, you get all the problems of a city. Fortunately the McGirr sisters (Mary Vincent and Mary Frances Xavier) arrived in the 1840’s to open hospitals and schools, before Chicago would be renowned. They were there through the Civil War, the great fire of 1871, and all of the great and terrible things that Chicago would be renowned for.

Women of Faith begins with the nuns’ entry into American life in a time of anti-Catholic sentiment. Nuns were seen as strange curiosities, but they weren’t the subject of attacks or anything like that. By the time the Civil War began there was a massive Irish Catholic presence in the military and the nuns provided nursing care for Union soldiers, even aboard the ships heading south.
According to the events of this book, Convents seems to have been a place for women who wanted careers and not marriage. By entering as a postulant, a woman would have a place to live, a job, and a chance to go to college. There was greater pressure on women to marry and have children in the pre-lib days, and even if you kept your job after you married, you’d still have to cook and clean for your husband on top of your job, and once you had kids, forget about a career. Convents weren’t luxurious, and the nuns probably weren’t paid much for their work, and they only got to take two college classes a semester, but it was better for some than living with your parents or being married to a jerk. And the convent schools were run by nuns, so there wouldn’t be a nasty male principal to deal with.

Perhaps the point of this great book is that religious groups provided most of the services for education, health, and child care in the days when the government didn’t. Today, fewer women want to be nuns, and a lot of Catholic schools in Chicago (and other cities) are closing. Even the Jewish schools went the same way, and there are many buildings in the city that used to house Jewish schools or vocational centers, now empty or turned into apartments.

This is a great book for the study of US history. The Sisters of Mercy were an integral part of life in the USA, particularly Chicago and other Midwestern cities, from the prairie days right to the crumbling of the cities, right up into the present, where parents are struggling to get their kids into the best school they can.
