Soldiers of Peace: Civil War Pacifism and the Postwar Radical Peace Movement (North's Civil War, No. 22), by Thomas F. Curran

Historians have tended to dismiss pacifism and the peace movement of the Civil War era, arguing that most Americans believed in the war as an answer to the crisis of secession. This groundbreaking book offers a much needed new perspective on role played by pacifism during and after Civil War era. Thomas Curran focuses on the perfectionist pacifists, a group of northerners whose views on Christian perfection and obligation forced them to take an extreme pacifist stance during the War. Curran tracks wartime opposition into the postwar years, when the perfectionists united to create the Universal Peace Union (UPU), America's most radical peace organization of the late nineteenth century. In this respect, the UPU represented a continuation of the optimistic perfectionism found in the reform movements of the antebellum era, a sentiment that some historians have argued became a victim of the horrors of the Civil War and its aftermath. The UPU became involved in a range of causes, including Reconstruction, Native American rights, labor relations, and women's rights. Through the UPU the perfectionists sought to reform all aspects of society to their understanding of the laws of God--a continuation of the optimistic perfectionism found in the reform movements of the antebellum era. Although the UPU had successes during its forty-seven years of operation, it ultimately failed to achieve its idealistic agenda. In Curran's fresh, insightful account, this story shines light on the limitations, often self-imposed, that many reform groups face in achieving their goals.

Curran + Antebellum History = Tour de Force on Steroids

These days, it seems like every two-bit charlatan with a piece of paper from Holeinthewall Junior College is spitting out a volume of drivel on this or that part of the late 19th century. No subject is more infested with these barely literate confidence men than Civil War & antebellum pacifism. Indeed, make barely a mention of Alexander Campbell or J.W. McGarvey on any campus in the country and you'll be swarmed by adjunct-professorial snake oil salesman in smoking jackets, peddling their intellecutally dubious wares.
Well, gentleman, let's just say that there's a new sheriff in town, and it's time to come correct or face the consequences. His name is Thomas F. Curran, and he is not here to play games; rather, he is here to give the most thorough treatment of the Restoration movement yet produced. Stunningly well researched, yet presented in a thoughtful, cogent, and above all interesting way, Curran has acheived a Taoist balance in this volume that most academics couldn't dream of if you gave them a magic lamp with an extra genie thrown in.
Move over, Messrs. De Groot, Murch, and West, this genre's pantheon just got a little bigger.

Enlightening history
By Edward Agro
I'd long been anxious to read this work in the hopes that it might shed light on the successes as well as the missteps of the current-day antiwar movement. And so it has. The book is a fine piece of historical reportage, and the author wisely lets the story tell itself. Though I sense Curran's passionate conviction in the background, he never passes judgment on the actors' beliefs; only at the end of the book does he venture an assessment of the evidence that the very strength of the actors' beliefs might have hindered them from more closely approaching their goals.

The book is rather repetitive, as it must be: for the main character is Alfred H. Love, who was possessed of the idée fixe that the only way to peace before, during, and after the Civil War was by rebuilding government and civil society on a Biblical model.

Upon seeing the case stated so baldly, different readers may be pardoned their polar reactions. Some might say, "Well, why not?" while others will wonder, "What has this eccentric character's ideas have to do with the modern peace movement?"

The implicit raising of these questions is in fact the value of the book. Reading the story of Love and the Universal Peace Union (UPU) he founded leads to an understanding of several strands of American civic culture and activism of 150 and more years ago that contribute substantially to the perspectives that we bring to peace and social change work today. Curran's evidence persuasively shows how intra- and extra-mural doctrinal rigidity within the UPU and its secular twin and bête noire, the American Peace Society, most likely lessened the positive things both groups could have accomplished. On the other hand, enough people, including Love as he aged, were able to get far enough ahead of their preconceptions to lay the groundwork for the WILPF and many of the other progressive campaigns and organizations of the 20th century.

This review doesn't do justice To Curran's contribution to the untangling of the many threads that led to present-day activist consciousness, nor will I be able to spell out here the interesting light his evidence sheds on the practice of - what else - war tax refusal. I don't want to oversell the book: it probably won't be much help to activists who are are on the barricades in behalf of one or another immediate campaign. But for those whose street fighting days are perhaps over, who have the luxury of trying to understand where we come from and where we might be going, it's a treasure.
