Science, Reason, Modernity: Readings for an Anthropology of the Contemporary (Forms of Living (FUP))From Fordham University Press

Science, Reason, Modernity: Readings for an Anthropology of the Contemporary provides an introduction to a legacy of philosophical and social scientific thinking about sciences and their integral role in shaping modernities, a legacy that has contributed to a specifically anthropological form of inquiry. Anthropology, in this case, refers not only to the institutional boundaries of an academic discipline but also to a mode of conceptualizing and addressing a problem: how to analyze and diagnose the modern sciences in their troubled relationships with lived realities. Such an approach addresses the sciences as forms of life and illuminates how the diverse modes of reason, action, and passion that characterize the scientific life continue to shape our existences as late moderns.

The essays provided in this book-many of them classics across disciplines-have been arranged genealogically. They offer a particular route through a way of thinking that has come to be crucial in elucidating the contemporary question of science as a formal way of understanding life. The book specifies the historical dynamics by way of which problems of science and modernity become matters of serious reflection, as well as the multiple attempts to provide solutions to those problems.

The book's aim is pedagogical. Its hope is that the constellation of texts it brings together will help students and scholars working on sciences become better equipped to think about scientific practices as anthropological problems.

Includes essays by: Hans Blumenberg, Georges Canguilhem, John Dewey, Michel Foucault, Immanuel Kant, Paul Rabinow, Max Weber.

Review

Science, Reason, Modernity offers an introduction to an anthropological engagement with the epistemologies, the ethical possibilities and limitations, and the practical impact of the sciences one that has no real precedent and stands as an important and generative alternative to the analytical frameworks that prevail in contemporary science and technology studies. -James Faubion, Rice University

Who Can Afford to Improvise?: James Baldwin and Black Music, the Lyric and the Listeners, by Ed Pavlic

More than a quarter-century after his death, James Baldwin remains an unparalleled figure in American literature and African American cultural politics. In Who Can Afford to Improvise? Ed Pavlic offers an unconventional, lyrical, and accessible meditation on the life, writings, and legacy of James Baldwin and their relationship to the lyric tradition in black music, from gospel and blues to jazz and R&B. Based on unprecedented access to private correspondence and unpublished manuscripts and attuned to a musically inclined poet's skill in close listening, Who Can Afford to Improvise? frames a new narrative of James Baldwin's work and life.

Who Can Afford to Improvise? is presented in three books--or movements; the first listens to Baldwin, in the initial months of his most intense visibility in May 1963 and the publication of The Fire Next Time. It introduces the key terms of his lyrical aesthetic and identifies the shifting contours of Baldwin's career from his early work as a reviewer for left-leaning journals in the 1940s to his last published and unpublished works from the mid-1980s. Book II listens with Baldwin and ruminates on the recorded performances of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, singers whose messages and methods were closely related to his developing worldview. It concludes with the first detailed account of "The Hallelujah Chorus," a performance from July 1, 1973, in which Baldwin shared the stage at Carnegie Hall with Ray Charles. Finally, in Book III, Pavlic reverses our musically inflected reconsideration of Baldwin's voice, projecting it into the contemporary moment and reading its impact on everything from the music of Amy Winehouse, to the street performances of Turf Feinz, and the fire of racial oppression and militarization against black Americans in the twenty-first century.

Always with an ear close to the music, and avoiding the safe box of celebration, Who Can Afford to Improvise? enables a new kind of "lyrical travel" with the instructive clarity and the open-ended mystery Baldwin's work invokes into the world.

Review

"In Who Can Afford to Improvise?" Ed Pavlic unearths James Baldwin's epic song--one shaped and honed by sacred and popular music. This rumination of intricate details celebrates Baldwin's vision of democratic conscience. Pavlic gives us a flesh-and-blood subject formed through a lyrical determinism of deep feeling. Through turn of thought and juxtaposition of historical and personal evidence, he embraces Baldwin's need for justice and truth."--Yusef Komunyakaa

"A brilliant and original study of Baldwin as the ultimate bluesman." --David Ritz, author of Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin

"Pavlic offers the most extensive engagement to date with Baldwin's lifelong love affair with black music, but he also provides the most sustained and compelling account of how Baldwin's work speaks (or sings) to our present global condition."--Emily Lordi, author of Black Resonance: Iconic Women Singers and African American Literature

"Ed Pavlic's words have always heard the music and with "Who Can Afford to Improvise?", he shows the exquisite ways that James Baldwin's words both heard the music and was the music itself."--Mark Anthony Neal, Looking for Leroy: Illegible Black Masculinities

"Who Can Afford to Improvise is a tour de force from one of our premier Baldwin scholars. Ed Pavlic's brilliantly insightful meditation on black music and culture and Baldwin's centrality to that tradition is a must-read."--Peniel E. Joseph, author of Dark Days, Bright Nights

"Pavlic proves himself an expert on Baldwin's corpus."--Library Journal

"...Who Can Afford to Improvise plays in the pocket between actual musical performances, interpretations of the lyrical mode in Baldwin's poetics, and intricate historical detail."-Los Angeles Review of Books

"While Pavlic is to be commended for choosing such an important subject in the first place, what is more important is the fact that he has addressed it with a great deal of stylistic finesse and analytical clarity."--Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwize Magazine

"If you read books, sometimes or all the time, for the quality of their sentences (and what writer doesn't? why else would anyone want to be a writer?), Who Can Afford to Improvise is even more essential. Ed Pavlic is f*cking fearless about how he goes about it, as fearless as any contemporary musician I can think of, as fearless as some of the greats. It's definitely a book, but music is where its soul is, if you ask me."--Dave Marsh, Counterpunch

"Ed Pavlic's strikingly original meditations reveal a James Baldwin swaddled in Black music whose masterful ear heard the overtones, the changes, echoes of memory, cries of agony and joy. By excavating experience from song and turning social critique into lyric, Baldwin produced a deeper, more dangerous truth."--Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original

James Baldwin and music/lyricism
By Earl
Who Can Afford to Improvise by Ed Pavlic is an accessible and far too rare form of literary criticism. Most critical books will tackle the works of the artist as works, be they novels, poems or whatever. The better works of criticism will also contextualize these works within the period in which they were created. Pavlic also brings an understanding of James Baldwin's work into active discourse with the present, a contextualizing within the period in which they are read.

This would be valuable for looking at any writer since one wonderful aspect of the literary arts is their ability to speak to different generations, different cultures and different historical periods. What Pavlic emphasizes here is the importance of "black music writ large" to Baldwin in both his life and his art. This lyrical aspect, as in music, is experiential in nature. If one also accepts that a reader, particularly an active reader, is also 'writing' the novel she is reading, then a work from 1963 can easily speak to life in 2016.

This volume is less a collection of essays about specific works than it is a playing of Baldwin's oeuvre with some riffing or improvising added as a way of contextualizing these works within contemporary culture. A type of call and response though that analogy is admittedly weak in my application here.

I reread some of Baldwin's books after I read this and found I had a much different interaction with them, almost exclusively from paying greater attention to voice first. I would highly recommend this for those interested in Baldwin, as well as applying that approach to other writers whose works seem to speak to you even when you aren't sure why.

In this world of glorious things to see, some may not be with us for long. Among these are many wonderful living creatures. These are the endangered animals with whom, as long as we've existed, we've shared this earth. Let's learn to draw these friends before they may leave us forever.
Warren Budd, whom I've known and worked with for many years, did a lion's share of the research and the art for this book. I've watched him develop from a raw, insecure art school student to the accomplished artist with whom I'm delighted to share coauthorship.

Frustration lies in the details
By D. McDiffett
I have enjoyed a number of Ames's step-by-step drawing books and was excited to find this one. However, I was somewhat disappointed in it. Here's why. Whereas Ames's other books show completed pictures very much like what I could produce by simply following the steps, in this book, the final results are invariably much more polished with shading and shadowing. That's not a problem in itself, except that Ames provides no instruction or steps which show how to accomplish those additional details. Thus, my frustration. I want my final results to resemble Ames's as closely as possible, but I'm not told how to achieve this. Otherwise, the basic steps are, as always, useful and easy. Just don't expect to learn the details here, even though they are shown in the final picture.

My kids love these step by step books. However, this book is better suited for older or more advanced drawers as the steps are more complicated than the original book we got.

This book shows how American literary culture in the first half of the twentieth century saw "irony'" emerge as a term to describe intersections between aesthetic and political practices. Against conventional associations of irony with political withdrawal, Stratton shows how the term circulated widely in literary and popular culture to describe politically engaged forms of writing.

It is a critical commonplace to acknowledge the difficulty of defining irony before stipulating a particular definition as a stable point of departure for literary, cultural, and political analysis. This book, by contrast, is the first to derive definitions of "irony" inductively, showing how writers employed it as a keyword both before and in opposition to the institutionalization of New Criticism. It focuses on writers who not only composed ironic texts but talked about irony and satire to situate their work politically: Randolph Bourne, Benjamin De Casseres, Ellen Glasgow, John Dos Passos, Ralph Ellison, and many others.

"Readers who like their scholarship to be ecumenical in its sourcing and counterintuitive in its findings will find much to admire in The Politics of Irony in American Modernism."

Shortlisted for the 2015 MSA Book Prize, Modernist Studies Association

"Stratton makes a highly original contribution both to our understanding of irony as it is used in literary critical discourse and to the political history of American modernism. He succeeds in historicizing this notoriously vague and slippery concept, and he persuasively articulates new ways of connecting the literary and the political that don't privilege either one at the expense of the other."-Jonathan Greenberg, author of Modernism, Satire, and the Novel?

"The major achievement of The Politics of Irony in American Modernism is that it teaches us to see modernist irony in a new light. It recovers an understanding of modernism that predates its New Critical canonization in the United States. The most effective instrument of this archeological work is the reinterpretation of the meaning of "irony," one of the central categories of New Criticism itself. What makes the book into a significant intervention into contemporary discussions of modernism is that it shows us that for a select group of authors irony did not serve as a means of apolitical detachment (as formalist readings would have it) but precisely as its opposite: for them, irony was a tool of political activism."-Roland Vegso, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

"The Politics of Irony in American Modernism is a remarkable work of scholarship, wedding theoretical acuity with bold and lively readings across an impressive range of contexts. Stratton argues with conviction for a genealogy of modernism that foregrounds attention to irony as a critical practice aiming to change the disposition of readers toward their own acts of political and imaginative engagement. Assembling a varied and surprising set of interlocutors, from Kenneth Burke, Ellen Glasgow, and American Nietzscheans to Northrop Frye, Adorno, and Ralph Ellison, Stratton conducts a rich meditation on literary work as political work, and on forms of feeling and thinking worthy of the epithet "democracy". He not only offers us a bold new frame for reading modernism; he makes modernism itself richly new as an object of study. This work will shape conversations among scholars of modernism and its discontents for many years to come."-Sara Blair, University of Michigan

"An important and deeply insightful book. Moving past familiar debates on the politics of irony, Stratton argues for an understanding of modernist irony as an aesthetic practice that not only sharply reorients political perception, but also promotes dispositions and habits of analysis that are indispensable to political thought and action." -Amanda Anderson, Brown University

"Readers who like their scholarship to be ecumenical in its sourcing and counterintuitive in its findings will find much to admire in 'The Politics of Irony in American Modernism.'" -ALH Online Review

From Publishers Weekly
Based on a Grimm fairy tale, Rogasky's elegant text portrays the age-old battle between Goodness and Evil. Three sons seek the Water of Life, which will cure the illness of their father, the king, but only the youngest is pure enough of heart to find it. Before the story's end, he is tested by a good dwarf, falls in love with a princess in an enchanted castle, tames two lions, saves the kingdoms of three kings, survives the treachery of his brothers and finally finds happiness. As usual, Caldecott medalist Hyman has created stunning illustrations that are inventive and richly detailed: black rooks silhouetted by firelight, medieval tapestries in the king's bedchamber, enchanted beasts, and more. This is a simply beautiful book.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 6 A retelling of a little-known tale from Grimm. Three brothers weep at their father's fatal illness until an old man tells them of a magic cure, the Water of Life. Each in turn sets out to find the cure, but because the older two have unpure motives and are mean-spirited, they do not succeed. The youngest son, through kindness and perseverance, attains the magic fluid and the love of a princess who promises to wait a year for his return. Tricked by the older brothers who substitute bitter sea water in his goblet and present the Water of Life to their father as their own achievement, the youngest brother is banished. At the end of the year, the false brothers try to win the princess, but the youngest once again wins the prize through strength of character and purity of motive. This traditional tale with all the trappings of magical elements, romance, and underlying psychological truth, is brought to life by Rogasky's spirited telling and Hyman's lush illustrations. The richly detailed paintings bring the landscape of the folk tale vividly to life, from the sick king's dark bed chamber hung with tapestries and dimly lit by stained glass windows, to the lightness and cheer of the wedding celebration at the end. Particularly noteworthy is the artist's use of color and light to vary the mood. An exquisite blend of text and illustrations, this rendition will be appealing to older children as well as those in primary grades. Connie C. Rockman, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, Conn.

A true Classic Fairy tale
By Natalie on the coast
I am a fan of fairy tales. And I love to share my passion for a good story with my son. My 5 year-old loved this book from the first reading.
It is not a short read for a 5 year-old, but it held his attention again and again. It is one of his favorites.
I bought this book because I love the illustrations of Ms. Hyman. We have read "Bearskin" by Howard Pyle, "Little Red Ridinghood", and "The Fortune Teller", all illustrated by Ms. Hyman. Her colors are vibrant and exciting. It seems that every book Ms. Hyman is involved with includes a great story and a great story teller.
"The Water of Life" has it all, love, tests and trials, devotion, greed, and betrayal. It gives us, mother and son, lots to talk about. I recommend this book heartily.

Do Not Hesitate: Buy this Book
By R. M. Fisher
Without hesitation I can assure you that "The Water of Life" is one of the most beautiful and intricate fairytales and picture books I have ever come across in my life. If you are a folk-lore scholar, a lover of beautiful illustrations, or a parent who believes that children are capable of absorbing the deeper side of fairytales rather than brainlessly watching the sugary-sweet rubbish that the T.V. spoonfeeds them today, then here is the picture book for you. Retold by Barbara Rogasky and illustrated by the fantastic Trina Schart Hyman, this story is a perfect blending of art and literature, and will stay with you for a very long time.
Don't believe me? Well, when I was no more than five years old my father got this book out of the library, but nine years later, all I could remember was a certain illustration that depicted the prince escaping from the enchanted courtyard. It was such a narrow escape as the gates closed on him, that his heel was torn off. This picture and the narrative stayed with me all those years, till I picked up another Trina Schart Hyman book, whose style of illustrations seemed vaugely familiar... After some typing on the public library's search engine "The Water of Life" was refound, and I stood in the library parking lot staring in amazement at the illustration that had stayed in my head for over nine years.
Well enough reminising, I'll get to the plot of the story. It is based on the Brother Grimm story, but unlike other retellings of their tales which "shear" certain components of their narratives, Barbara Rogasky keeps in all the details and subquests that make the story so intricate. If you've ever read Brothers Grimm you'll know that the pretty little stories you usually see nowadays are very unlike their original counterparts. Often the Grimm Brothers would go off into tangents in their storytellings, adding unexplained or irrelevent people and events, which made them slightly confusing, but all the more colourful and fascinating. "The Water of Life" tells the story of three brothers whose father was very ill. After the two eldest brothers go, are rude to a small dwarf traveller and therefore trapped in a ravine between two mountains, the youngest son rides out to find the Water of Life and cure his father. He is not so coarse to the dwarf and so gathers some useful advice: that the Water is held in the fountain of a courtyard in an enchanted castle, guarded by iron gates and fierce lions. The Prince enters this place and there meets a beautiful Princess. You guessed it, it's love at first sight, and the Prince gathers the Water for his father, promising that he'll return to wed the Princess in a year's time. But his treacherous brothers have other plans - to have their brother destroyed and claim the Princess for themselves.
It has all the components of a traditional fairytale: an ill king, three feuding brothers, a castle under a spell, a dwarfin companion and a beautiful princess, but here appear like brand new under Barbara Rogersky's working of the mysterious narrative. There are passages of intrigue and detail galore: the table of enchanted princes, the youngest son's travels with the magic bread and sword, the huntsman sent to kill him, and the wise Princess's own plan to secure her true love. Yet despite the darker tones of the tale, the morale shines through: that of honesty, love and truth always coming through in the end.
And then of course, there's Trina Schart Hyman's illustrations. They evoke a beautiful and deep medieval/fairytale world, and perfectly echo the story, as well as creating an extra depth of their own. Long after the dwarf disappears from the narrative, he features in the illustrations, peeking from behind trees and watching the action from high bluffs. Likewise, the lions that guard the gates of the castle appear in the narrative only as "watch-dogs", but continue to appear at the Princess's side like overgrown house cats. There are stories within stories, as the tapestries in the king's bed chamber seem to tell an unknown but fascinating woodland tale, and there is no picture more intriging than the table of enchanted princes: one with butterfly wings, one with stag's horns, one with a unicorn horn, another with a bird's head... Likewise, the sight of the two elder brothers wedged between two mountains on horseback is comic, claustrophobic, inventive and completely realistic. Finally, everyone may groan at the "love at first sight" passage, but Hyman's incredible details create love and adoration between two figures that *make* you believe in it. Her details and use of colour are perfection, and out of all her works, "The Water of Life" is one of the best.
Children are some of the most underestimated creatures in the world, and they deserve to have this wonderful story read to them. Turn off the T.V. and open "The Water of Life". Hopefully Amazon will place a picture of the product on this webpage so that everyone can see for themselves and not just take my word for it just how beautiful this book is.

Beautiful tale for all ages
By A Customer
My daughter who is getting her Master's in Art asked for this book for Christmas. She adores Trina Schart Hyman illustrations. I really loved this book. The illustrations are really beautiful with many little interesting things to pick out in them. Children will find the scene from the enchanted castle especially fun. All the princes are sitting frozen in time at a banquet table. One is a frog, one a unicorn, another has butterfly wings, etc. Most of the pictures have a dark cast to them but the last one of the wedding is bright and cheery with little children wearing red costumes and throwing pink petals. The bridal couple are gorgeously dressed too. Moral of the story: Be kind and good and you will achieve true happiness.

Thoreau's Importance for Philosophy (American Philosophy (FUP)), by Rick Anthony Furtak, Jonathan Ellsworth, James D. Reid

The philosophical significance of Henry David Thoreau's life and writings is far from settled. Although his best-known book, Walden, is admired as a classic work of American literature, it has not yet been widely recognized as an important philosophical text. In fact, many members of the academic philosophical community in America would be reluctant to classify Thoreau as a philosopher at all. The purpose of this volume is to remedy this neglect, to explain Thoreau's philosophical significance, and to argue that we can still learn from his polemical conception of philosophy.

Thoreau sought to establish philosophy as a way of life, and to root our philosophical, conceptual affairs in more practical or existential concerns. His work provides us with a sustained meditation on the appropriate conduct of life and the importance of leading our lives with integrity, avoiding what he calls "quiet desperation." The contributors to this volume approach Thoreau's writings from different angles, collectively bringing to light what, in his own distinctive and idiosyncratic way, this major American thinker has meant to multiple areas of philosophical inquiry, and why he is still relevant. They show how the imagination, according to Thoreau, might be related to the disclosure of truth; they illuminate the nuances of embodied consciousness and explore the links between moral character and scientific knowledge. They clarify Thoreau's project by locating it in relation to earlier philosophical authors and traditions, noting the ways in which he either anticipated or influenced a host of later thinkers. They explore his aesthetic views, his naturalism, his theory of self, his ethical principles, and his political stances. Most importantly, they show how Thoreau returns philosophy to its roots as the love of wisdom.

Review
"A sustained encounter between Thoreau's sense of philosophy as urgent cultural work--at once ethical, metaphysical, political, aesthetic, epistemological, and religious--and the current dispensations of academic philosophy is long overdue. The learned, genial, and intense guides who here stage this encounter produce a reckoning with Thoreau and with philosophy that is not to be missed."--Richard Eldridge, Swarthmore College "For all the rich diversity of these essays about Thoreau, they are bound together by their consistent, and penetrating, attention to the specifically philosophical dimension of his thought. Thoreau is to be taken seriously as a philosopher, as Stanley Cavell, interviewed in the collection, made eloquently clear many years ago. A book with this emphasis is long overdue, and readers will find Thoreau's Importance for Philosophy challenging and illuminating."--H. Daniel Peck, author of Thoreau's Morning Work

Deleuze once commeted that it was a real shame that Americans flock to French theory while ignoring the riches of their own tradition. Furtak and Reid do more than anyone since Cavell's _Senses of Walden_ to show that Thoreau is a thinker of immense importance and signficance. A rich and rewarding read from beginning to end.

Manhattan: Letters from Prehistory, by Helene Cixous

Manhattan is the tale of a young French scholar who travels to the United States in 1965 on a Fulbright Fellowship to consult the manuscripts of beloved authors. In Yale University's Beinecke Library, tantalized by the conversational and epistolary brilliance of a fellow researcher, she is lured into a picaresque and tragic adventure. Meanwhile, back in France, her children and no-nonsense mother await her return. A young European intellectual's first contact with America and the city of New York are the background of this story. The experience of Manhattan haunts this labyrinth of a book as, over a period of thirty-five years, its narrator visits and revisits Central Park and a half-buried squirrel, the Statue of Liberty and a never again to be found hotel in the vicinity of Morningside Heights: a journey into memory in which everything is never the same.Traveling from library to library, France to the United States, Shakespeare to Kafka to Joyce, Manhattan deploys with gusto all the techniques for which Cixous's fiction and essays are known: rapid juxtapositions of time and place, narrative and description, analysis and philosophical reflection. It investigates subjects Cixous has spent her life probing: reading, writing, and the omnipotence-otherseductions of literature; a family's flight from NaziGermany and postcolonial Algeria; childhood, motherhood, and, not least, the strange experience of falling in love with, as Jacques Derrida writes, a counterfeit genius.

Veiled Desires: Intimate Portrayals of Nuns in Postwar Anglo-American Film, by Maureen Sabine

A provocative, interdisciplinary study of nuns on the big screen, from The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) to Doubt (2008), that shines fresh light on the cinematic nun as a woman and a religious in the twentieth century.

Ingrid Bergman's engaging screen performance as Sister Mary Benedict in The Bells of St. Mary's made the film nun a star and her character a shining standard of comparison. She represented the religious life as the happy and rewarding choice of a modern woman who had a "complete understanding" of both erotic and spiritual desire. How did this vibrant and mature nun figure come to be viewed as girlish and naive? Why have she and her cinematic sisters in postwar popular film so often been stereotyped or selectively analyzed, so seldom been seen as women and religious?

In Veiled Desires--a unique full-length, in-depth study of nuns in film--Maureen Sabine explores these questions in a groundbreaking interdisciplinary study covering more than sixty years of cinema. She looks at an impressive breadth of films in which the nun features as an ardent lead character, including The Bells of St. Mary's (1945), Black Narcissus (1947), Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957), Sea Wife (1957), The Nun's Story (1959), The Sound of Music (1965), Change of Habit (1969), In This House of Brede (1975), Agnes of God (1985), Dead Man Walking (1995), and Doubt (2008).

Veiled Desires considers how the beautiful and charismatic stars who play chaste nuns, from Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn to Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep, call attention to desires that the veil concealed and the habit was thought to stifle. In a theologically and psychoanalytically informed argument, Sabine responds to the critics who have pigeonholed the film nun as the obedient daughter and religious handmaiden of a patriarchal church, and the respectful audience who revered her as an icon of spiritual perfection. She provides a framework for a more complex and holistic picture of nuns on screen by showing how the films dramatize these women's Christian call to serve, sacrifice, and dedicate themselves to God, and their erotic desire for intimacy, agency, achievement, and fulfillment.

Review

"The 'nun film' has been a significant genre in Anglo-American cinema through most of the second half of the twentieth century. Maureen Sabine's is the most impressive treatment to date of a genre that has sadly been neglected in the literature of film studies. Ranging from serious art films such as Black Narcissus to the popular entertainment of The Sound of Music, Sabine combines Freudian psychology and Christian theology to offer a sensitive reading of films whose protagonists invariably struggle to fashion distinct personal identities while remaining faithful to received traditions."--Christopher S. Shannon, Christendom College

"Veiled Desires is a provocative, fascinating, and occasionally lyrical study of the narratives and imagery of Catholic women religious on the big screen. The book is impressively ambitious in scope, bringing together social theory, psychoanalysis, Catholic history, and media studies to interpret 40 years of film."--Amy L. Koehlinger, Florida State University

"Veiled Desires is a rich, compelling, and provocative appraisal of the cinematic nun. In her intricate analyses of both contemporary and historical films, Maureen Sabine masterfully recovers the Eros of a religious vocation. In so doing, she challenges the way that popular culture defines women's desire and erotic selfhood, and reveals the complex dynamic between our spiritual and sexual lives."-Rebecca Sullivan, The University of Calgary

Well Done

This is a most illuminating book on the history of religious life of sisters as seen in film. The author states her premis early on and goes on to build her case as she reviews most of the films from the forties on that potray thel ife of the sister. Well done.

Ingrid, Deborah, Audrey, Meryl and Susan in Veils!
By Teejay
The author's thesis runs through this book and rings true, though perhaps a bit too repetitiously. Yes, the movie star vehicles that featured the "Hollywood nuns" whom America loved through the forties, fifties and even into more modern times did represent more than just the surface plot lines of ruffian kids, smarmy priests, flowing habits and - inevitably - those omnipresent veils referenced in the book's title. Beneath the fluff and folds of wool, however, were vibrant, intelligent and passionate women who loved the church and their religious orders, but still had real female convictions and aspirations, very human needs, and a living grasp of the agape/eros dynamic which has long stood as the crux of traditional vs modern religious life.

Sabine beats this thesis to tears, but also takes interesting side roads that demonstrate how the actresses' personal lives, careers and convictions often played into the nun characters they portrayed on screen. The shrouded mystery of mid-century convent life, that was so present to the Catholic subculture, was given a dynamic humanity by the stories of the sisters in The Bells of St. Mary's, The Nun's Story, Dead Man Walking, and others.

While many who never quite understood the reasons for the changes after Vatican II may have mourned the loss of that mystery, those ankle length habits, those binding coifs and flowing veils, Maureen Sabine uses the vehicle of hit movies to demonstrate the necessary changes and growth that - while erasing the cryptic and strangely compelling monastic customs of convent existence - finally brought to life the flesh and blood passion of women who devoted themselves, for the love of God, to ministering to people rather than rituals and abstractions.

This book is great preface to watching again with new eyes those "nun films" that inevitably pop up every Christmas time, when we all seem to want to forget that smart women with high ideals and tremendous talents were often suffocated under those heavy habits and starched veils legislated by a patriarchal church.
