The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: Its Complete History and Application, by John D. Feerick

Undisputed as the most important synthetic work on the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, this revised edition provides the latest in legal thought regarding presidential succession.

This new edition of The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: Its Complete History and Applications updates John Feerick's landmark study with the Amendment's uses in the past twenty years and how those uses (along with new legal scholarship) have changed the Amendment and perceptions of presidential disability in general. In its formulation, the Twenty-fifth Amendment was criticized as vague and undemocratic, but it has made possible swift and orderly successions to the highest offices in the U.S. government during some of the most extraordinary events in American history. The extent of its authority has been tested over the years: During the Watergate crisis, it was proposed that the Amendment might afford a means by which a president could transfer presidential power during an impeachment proceeding, and it was also suggested that the Amendment could authorize a vice president and cabinet to suspend a president during a Senate impeachment trial. Where once presidential disability was stigmatized, today a president under general anesthesia cedes presidential authority for the length of the procedure with little controversy. The Twenty-fifth Amendment is evolving rapidly, and this book is an invaluable guide for legal scholars, government decision makers, historians, political scientists, teachers, and students studying the nation's highest offices.

Commons Democracy: Reading the Politics of Participation in the Early United States, by Dana D. Nelson

Commons Democracy highlights a poorly understood dimension of democracy in the early United States. It tells a story that, like the familiar one, begins in the Revolutionary era. But instead of the tale of the Founders' high-minded ideals and their careful crafting of the safe framework for democracy--a representative republican government--Commons Democracy examines the power of the democratic spirit, the ideals and practices of everyday people in the early nation. As Dana D. Nelson reveals in this illuminating work, the sensibility of participatory democratic activity fueled the involvement of ordinary folk in resistance, revolution, state constitution-making, and early national civic dissent. The rich variety of commoning customs and practices in the late colonies offered non-elite actors a tangible and durable relationship to democratic power, one significantly different from the representative democracy that would be institutionalized by the Framers in 1787. This democracy understood political power and liberties as communal, not individual.

Ordinary folk practiced a democracy that was robustly participatory and insistently local. To help tell this story, Nelson turns to early American authors--Hugh Henry Brackenridge, James Fenimore Cooper, Robert Montgomery Bird, and Caroline Kirkland--who were engaged with conflicts that emerged from competing ideals of democracy in the early republic, such as the Whiskey Rebellion and the Anti-Rent War as well as the enclosure of the legal commons, anxieties about popular suffrage, and practices of frontier equalitarianism. While Commons Democracy is about the capture of "democracy" for the official purposes of state consolidation and expansion, it is also a story about the ongoing (if occluded) vitality of commons democracy, of its power as part of our shared democratic history and its usefulness in the contemporary toolkit of citizenship.

"Nelson focuses in this book on a dynamic aspect of U.S. history, one that is already quite relevant in our own time and that promises to be increasingly so in the future."--John Ernest, University of Delaware

"An important contribution, at a vital moment, to renewing appreciation of democracy as the awkward practice of sharing power to shape common existence."--Wendy Brown, University of California, Berkeley

Saintly Influence: Edith Wyschogrod and the Possibilities of Philosophy of Religion (Perspectives in Continental Philosophy)From Fordham

Since the publication of her first book, Emmanuel Levinas: The Problem of Ethical Metaphysics, in 1974-the first book about Levinas published in English-Edith Wyschogrod has been at the forefront of the fields of Continental philosophy and philosophy of religion. Her work has crossed many disciplinary boundaries, making peregrinations from phenomenology and moral philosophy to historiography, the history of religions (both Western and non-Western), aesthetics, and the philosophy of biology. In all of these discourses, she has sought to cultivate an awareness of how the self is situated and influenced, as well as the ways in which a self can influence others. In this volume, twelve scholars examine and display the influence of Wyschogrod's work in essays that take up the thematics of influence in a variety of contexts: Christian theology, the saintly behavior of the villagers of Le Chambon sur Lignon, the texts of the medieval Jewish mystic Abraham Abulafia, the philosophies of Levinas, Derrida, and Benjamin, the practice of intellectual history, the cultural memory of the New Testament, and pedagogy. In response, Wyschogrod shows how her interlocutors have brought to light her multiple authorial personae and have thus marked the ambiguity of selfhood, its position at the nexus of being influenced by and influencing others.

Review

Essays that both examine and extend the work of the American scholar (1930-2009).

Committed to the contours of postmodernism, Edith Wyschogrod is perhaps the most important expositor of (re)constructing ethics in light of the uncertainties of the present age. These essays, authored by colleagues and students who have emerged as important scholars in their respective fields, exhibit the profound influence she has had in philosophy, Jewish and Christian theology, religion, mysticism, and history. Her rigor, insight, creativity, and generosity jump from the pages of these essays and her response. This collection is a testament to one of our most cherished and beloved teachers.-Shaul Magid

A fine set of essays that fittingly pay tribute to the saintly influence ofEdith Wyschogrod.-Bruce Ellis Benson

This book, about a young, callow witch by the name of Blanche, is a tender and sentimental story of Halloween in the 1950s. It will take you back to a simpler time in your life, when problems were about friendships and fun, and it'll open your heart to forgotten innocense. I still have my copy from 1956 when the book was published, and although I'm in my late forties, I still treasure it, and read it aloud to my friends every Holloween. The author, Margerat Embry, was the original JK Rowling, and Blanche was Harry Potter's great, great, cousin. Try and get a copy, you'll remember your childhood dreams. A real Halloween Treat!
By zink
Here is the story of a little witch named Blanche who is constantly getting into trouble because of her youth and carefree attitude. She belongs to an order of responsible, adult witches, and is only a member because of her ability to turn her blue nose on and off!
The Tale begins on the eve of Halloween Night, where the witches have big plans to perform a flight formation late that night. Afraid of being late, Blanche sets her alarm clock extra-early, and, ends up flying out much, much too early for the coven meeting. She meets up with children her own age who teach the young witch how to have fun trick-or-treating on Halloween Night!
I first read Margaret Embry's story of Blanche The Blue Nosed Witch in a "Collier's Junior Classics" Collection entitled "Harvest Of Holidays". Although the version presented in this collection (although I didn't know it at the time) was abridged, I was completely taken in by the imaginative story and the characters you immediately fall in love with. It also has a timeless quality to it that all great stories seem to have: a "Once-upon-a-Time" feeling.
One day browsing the neighborhood Library I came across a bound library copy of The Blue Nosed Witch. As a child it never crossed my mind that the story might have been excerpted from an actual book! Quickly leafing through the pages I found a complete story and beautiful illustrations by Carl Rose on almost every page. Oh, the Joy!

This wonderful story has become a tradition for me and must be taken out every Halloween. I believe this book belongs in company of Charles Shulz' classic cartoon "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and Robert Bright's "Georgie's Halloween" as essential Halloween Treats!

A PERFECT HALLOWEEN STORY FOR CHILDREN
By JUNEBUG51
"The Blue-Nosed Witch" is a sweet little story that your young children will enjoy. Blanche and her little cat Brocket are just the cutest touch to this warm and fuzzy Halloween tale from the past. There is a mean old man in this story who Blanche and the trick or treaters she befriends teach a good lesson. But all in all, your little ones will want you to read this one about the little witch who was always late again and again.

From the Publisher
There are few Presidents of the United States whose historical image has changed more frequently than that of Andrew Johnson. In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War and Reconstruction, he was considered inept and stubborn. After some time, however, Reconstruction was no longer seen as a holy crusade, and Johnson's reputation began to improve. By the 1920's, Johnson had become a great hero who had courageously defended the Constitution against unprincipled radicals. But as circumstances changed again and racial problems were once more weighing upon America's conscience, the seventeenth President's achievements began to appear more questionable. Perhaps he had not been so admirable after all; perhaps his stubborn resistance to radical demands for black suffrage merited disapprobation rather than praise. His portrait was tarnished a second time. Not only was he now labeled a racist, but an inept politician as well.

In Impeachment of a President: Andrew Johnson, the Blacks, and Reconstruction, Trefousse paints a portrait of Johnson as a man who was honest, stubborn, and certain of the justice of his cause. Trefousse argues that Johnson was not the man to inch from the implications of decisions which might interfere temporarily with his long-range aims. Often alienating potential allies, he could have probably achieved more had he cooperated with moderate republicans. In part, he might even have realized his white supremacist aims. But once he had made his decision, once he had refused to come to terms with the moderates, his subsequent actions were not illogical. His policy may not the most intelligent-he was no political genius-but it was not wholly unsuccessful.

Scrolls of Love: Ruth and the Song of SongsFrom Fordham University Press

Scrolls of Love is a book of unions. Edited by a Jew and a Christian who are united by a shared passion for the Bible and a common literary hermeneutic, it joins two biblical scrolls and gathers around them a diverse community of interpreters. It brings together Ruth and the Song of Songs, two seemingly disparate texts of the Hebrew Bible, and reads them through a number of the methodological and theological perspectives. Respectful of traditional biblical scholarship, the collection of essays moves beyond it; alert to contemporary trends, the volume returns venerable interpretive tradition to center stage. Most significantly, it is interfaith. Despite the fact that Jews and Christians share a common text in the Hebrew Scripture, the two communities have read their Bibles in isolation from one another, in ignorance of the richness of the other's traditions of reading. Scrolls of Love brings the two traditions into dialogue, enriching established modes of interpretation with unconventional ones. The result is a volume that sets rabbinic, patristic, and medieval readings alongside feminist, psychoanalytic, and autobiographical ones, combining historical, literary, and textual criticism with a variety of artistic reinterpretations-wood cuts and paper cuts, poetry and fiction. Some of the works are scholarly, with the requisite footnotes to draw readers to further inquiry: others are more reflective than analytic, allowing readers to see what it means to live intimately with Scripture. As a unity, the collection presents Ruth and Song of Songs not only as ancient texts that deserve to be treasured but as old worlds capable of begetting the new.

Excellent Anthology
By Cantor Rachel
I found this by chance searching for other writings on the Book of Ruth for a class I took. This collection was invaluable. Some of the voices in it are known authorities on this book of the Hebrew Bible, some are newer at least to me. The anthology covers all channels from straight up literary criticism to new angles on Ruth Rabbah (midrash) and new interpretations of its spiritual meaning for our time. Anyone interested in these scrolls should read this book. Bravo.

Mourning Modernism: Literature, Catastrophe, and the Politics of Consolation, by Lecia Rosenthal

Mourning Modernism: Literature, Catastrophe, and the Politics of Consolation examines the writing of catastrophe, mass death, and collective loss in 20th-century literature and criticism. With particular focus on texts by Virginia Woolf, Walter Benjamin, and W.G. Sebald, Mourning Modernism engages the century's signal preoccupation with world-ending,a mixed rhetoric of totality and rupture, finitude and survival, the end and its posthumous remainders. Fascinated with the threat of apocalypse, the century proliferates the spectacle of world-ending as a form of desire, an ambivalent compulsion to consume and outlive the end of all.In conversation with recent discussions of the century's passion for the real, and taking on the century's late aesthetics of subtraction, Mourning Modernism reads the century's obsession with negative forms of ending and outcome. Drawing connections between the current interest in the category of trauma and the tradition of the sublime, Mourning Modernism reframes the terms of the modernist experiment and its aesthetics of the breaking-point from the lens of a late sublime.

Review

Lecia Rosenthal's intricate argument traces the engagement with catastrophe in the work of three exemplary figures, Woolf, Benjamin, and Sebald. She also offers a compelling diagnosis of modernism's stubborn insistence that catastrophe must offer some form of gain. Rosenthal's brilliance lies in her refusal to console us. This is a demanding, provocative, and deeply rewarding book.-Martin Harries

Boldly written and well researched. Rosenthal brings together unexpected materials, drawing convincing lines of connection between seemingly disparate authors and texts. In style, argument, and method, Rosenthal produces knowledge unavailable within convential scholarship. Juxtaposing Benjamin and Sebald with Virginia Woolf produces explosive results.-Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak

The Architecture of Concepts: The Historical Formation of Human Rights, by Peter de Bolla

The Architecture of Concepts proposes a radically new way of understanding the history of ideas. Taking as its example human rights, it develops a distinctive kind of conceptual analysis that enables us to see with precision how the concept of human rights was formed in the eighteenth century.

The first chapter outlines an innovative account of concepts as cultural entities. The second develops an original methodology for recovering the historical formation of the concept of human rights based on data extracted from digital archives. This enables us to track the construction of conceptual architectures over time.

Having established the architecture of the concept of human rights, the book then examines two key moments in its historical formation: the First Continental Congress in 1775 and the publication of Tom Paine's Rights of Man in 1792. Arguing that we have yet to fully understand or appreciate the consequences of the eighteenth-century invention of the concept "rights of man," the final chapter addresses our problematic contemporary attempts to leverage human rights as the most efficacious way of achieving universal equality

Review

"De Bolla has produced that rare thing-an academic book that does something new. Beginning with a splendid but challenging theoretical distinction between rights conceived as the specifiable properties of people called persons, and right conceived as a universal and axiomatic value of human life, but one that is nowhere available for empirical inspection, de Bolla proceeds to examine two momentous contributions to political history-The Declaration of Independence and Thomas Paine's Rights of Man."-Jonathan Lamb, Vanderbilt University

"This is the most detailed study to date of the process by which the idea of the "rights of man" entered popular discourse during the epoch of the American and French revolutions and subsequently became central to modern political thinking. Methodologically sophisticated and analytically innovative, it presents a penetrating and persuasive account of the linguistic transformations through which rights concepts emerged, and their relationship to related concepts, such as duty and humanity. The masterful use of digital archives makes possible for the first time disclosure of a much wider range of meanings within rights discourses, and thus reveals more clearly how rights concepts were formed and developed. This is a valuable addition to the growing literature on the emergence of the language of human rights."-Gregory Claeys, Royal Holloway University of London

"The Architecture of Concepts surprises us at every turn. It uses the latest data bases and search engines to upend the standard history of the concept of human rights, which exploded much later in the eighteenth century than usually supposed. It digs into American history by revealing the First Continental Congress as a crucial site of conceptual innovation, and reveals Thomas Paine's Rights of Man has having dispersed the phrase more than the conception. At every turn, de Bolla forges an entirely original theory of concepts as culturally active forces--not merely definitions or ideas, but instruments of thought and action."-John Bender, Stanford University

"De Bolla's concern for contemporary human rights is clearly evident, and there can be no doubt that he has undertaken the studies that comprise his carefully composed, intricately argued book with the ultimate aim of contributing to the cause of human rights." -The Los Angeles Review of Books

"This new book by Peter de Bolla, professor of cultural history and aesthetics at the University of Cambridge, is a major contribution to historical methodology as well as to Enlightenment studies and our understanding of how modern universal human rights arose." -Critical Inquiry, The University of Chicago

Peter de Bolla is Professor of Cultural History and Aesthetics at the University of Cambridge. His most recent books are The Fourth of July and the Founding of America and Aesthetics and the Work of Art co-edited with Stefan Uhlig.

Catholic Social Learning: Educating the Faith That Does Justice, by Roger Bergman

The canon for Catholic social teaching spreads to six hundred pages, yet fewer than two pages are devoted to Catholic social learning or pedagogy. In this long-needed book, Roger Bergman begins to correct that gross imbalance. He asks: How do we educate (lead out) the faith that does justice? How is commitment to social justice provoked and sustained over a lifetime? To address these questions, Bergman weaves what he has learned from thirty years as a faith-that-does-justice educator with the best of current scholarship and historical authorities. He reflects on personal experience; the experience of Church leaders, lay activists, and university students; and the few words the tradition itself has to say about a pedagogy for justice.Catholic Social Learning explores the foundations of this pedagogy, demonstrates its practical applications, and illuminates why and how it is fundamental to Catholic higher education. Part I identifies personal encounters with the poor and marginalized as key to stimulating a hunger and thirst for justice. Part II presents three applications of Catholic social learning: cross-cultural immersion as illustrated by Creighton University's Semestre Dominicano program; community-based service learning; and the teaching of moral exemplars such as Dorothy Day, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and Archbishop Oscar Romero. Part III then elucidates how a pedagogy for justice applies to the traditional liberal educational mission of the Catholic university, and how it can be put into action.Catholic Social Learning is both a valuable, practical resource for Christian educators and an important step forward in the development of a transformative pedagogy.

Roger Bergman has been doing justice for the past thirty years and teaching others in masterly fashion to do it. In this volume, he articulates his vast experience of doing and teaching to the benefit of all of us. I cannot think of a single reader, experienced or inexperienced in the area of social justice, who will not be greatly enriched by reading his reflections and following his instructions in this book.-Michael G. Practing social justice today
By John R Donahue
There have been fine books on Catholic Social Teaching, and students at virtually every Catholic educational institution are involved in various forms of service. Bergman's book, which is obviously the result of great experience, extensive reading and research, offers guidelines for bridging the gap between experience and theological reflection with implications for Christian practice today. This should be required reading for all teaching or working in the area of social justice.

Unique and creative contribution to the field
By Thomas Massaro SJ
Roger Bergman does us the great service of stepping back from the content of Catholic social teaching to reflect on the challenges of sharing that tradition of thought on social justice with many others, especially youth. There is much wisdom, on every page. I have worked in this field for many years and still found this book packed with creative and original insights about pedagogy and learning styles and outcomes. I recommend this book very highly for anyone concerned about passing on "the faith that does justice."

Democracy's Spectacle: Sovereignty and Public Life in Antebellum American Writing (American Literatures Initiative), by Jennifer Greiman

What is the hangman but a servant of law? And what is that law but an expression of public opinion? And if public opinion be brutal and thou a component part thereof, art thou not the hangman's accomplice?Writing in 1842, Lydia Maria Child articulates a crisis in the relationship of democracy to sovereign power that continues to occupy political theory today. Is sovereignty, with its reliance on singular and exceptional power, fundamentally inimical to democracy? Or might a more fully realized democracy distribute, share, and popularize sovereignty, thus blunting its exceptional character and its basic violence? In Democracy's Spectacle, Jennifer Greiman looks to an earlier moment in the history of American democracy's vexed interpretation of sovereignty to argue that such questions about the popularization of sovereign power shaped debates about political belonging and public life in the antebellum United States. In an emergent democracy that was also an expansionist slave society, Greiman argues, the problems that sovereignty posed were less concerned with a singular and exceptional power lodged in the state than with a power over life and death that involved all Americans intimately.Drawing on Alexis de Tocqueville's analysis of the sovereignty of the people in Democracy in America, along with work by Gustave de Beaumont, Lydia Maria Child, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville, Greiman tracks the crises of sovereign power as it migrates out of the state to become a constitutive feature of the public sphere. Greiman brings together literature and political theory, as well as materials on antebellum performance culture, antislavery activism, and penitentiary reform, to argue that the antebellum public sphere, transformed by its empowerment, emerges as a spectacle with investments in both punishment and entertainment.

Review

Democracy's Spectacle is an engaging, original and often disquieting account of popular sovereignty in the antebellum period and of the public culture that gave it shape and expression.ÿ Greiman examines not only the forms of popular power that defined the experience of self-rule, but the ways in which this power preserved the residual aspect and effect of sovereign power in the capacity to punish its citizens.ÿ Revealing the forgotten character of democracy in the early U.S., Grieman shows how the tyranny of the majority, the violence of the mob, and the corrosive force of public opinion borrowed from traditionary authority the power of exclusion-indeed assumed their authority through their exclusions.ÿ In its searching look at narrative responses to the novelty and estrangements of democratic life, Democracy's Spectacle will find an eager audience within literary and American studies.-Elisa Tamarkin

In Democracy's Spectacle, Jennifer Greiman advances a complex, nuanced, and original argument about the contradictions of antebellum popular sovereignty and their virulent expression in public spectacles, and in writing and theorizing about such spectacles. This searching study will be compelling reading for those wondering about the roots of our current failures of political imagination.-Jonathan Elmer

"Greiman enhances our understanding of antebellum culture by exploring popular sovereignty's transformation of public life in the United States."-American Literature

An intriguing and educational read
By Midwest Book Review
In Democracy, the people have the power, and the people are intriguing rulers. "Democracy's Spectacle: Sovereignty and Public Life in Antebellum American Writing" analyzes the literature of the nineteenth century and its relation to the politics of the era. Sovereignty and the people is the major theme, as professor of literature Jennifer Greiman looks at the works of Hawthorne, Melville, and others to discuss literature's impact on activism in the era, slavery, and other topics. "Democracy's Spectacle" is an intriguing and educational read that would do well in any community or college library collection focusing on literature and historical politics.
