From the Back Cover
The man in the street would not, perhaps, recognize all the names of the brilliant scientists whose careers and personalities animate this book, but doctors know them. Morgan, who founded the first medical school in America and, fighting beside Washington, was ruined by the petty politics of the Revolution; McDowell, who, although on the fringe of the wilderness, dared the operation that prepared the way for all abdominal surgery; Rush, the equivocal personality who, for better or worse, dominated American medicine for more than fifty years; Beaumont, who, saving a life, won a living laboratory; Drake, who brought modern medicine to the new West; Long and Morton, who banished pain from surgery and earned it for themselves - these men are honored in their profession today. Mr. Flexner approaches his subject with authority, sympathy, and humor. The bitter antagonisms, personal jealousies, tragic misconceptions which inevitably arose are given their place in the story, but always the reader is conscious that these men were making lasting contributions to their profession and to their country. The book is one that will have immediate appeal for those who enjoy being behind the scenes of the scientific world, and for those who like to wander through the by ways of history.

History of Medicine with a great story
By K. Topaz
Did you know that the first surgeon would have been hung if his patient had died when he was removing a huge tumor? Yes! The towns people were fastening a noose on a tree while he was inside performing surgery to remove a large abdominal tumor from a woman. This book contains very interesting facts and accounts on the history of medicine. It was written in 1937, pre WWII. Fascinating book!

Early American Physicians
By Acute Observer
Doctors on Horseback, Flexner

This 1937 book tells about the early American physicians who made discoveries in the early age of modern medical science. It has a Selected Bibliography, Acknowledgments, and an Index. Medicine was still a mystery, no one knew why fevers came or how to cure them. The dangers of infection limited surgeons to simple operations. Then doctors of genius made great discoveries that began the age of modern medical science. This book reminds us of these pioneers. [Medical science made little progress since the days of Aristotle and Galen.] Until World War I more soldiers died from disease than combat wounds. About nine American soldiers died of disease for one killed in battle (p.3). Disease and medical incompetence were a major part of the Revolution.

Doctor John Morgan was the most brilliant physician and founded America's first medical school, the Medical College of Philadelphia. The apprentice system was used to train in medicine. In 1761 Morgan went to Edinburgh, the leading medical school in the world. He discovered pus arose from the blood vessels. Only a college could provide a well-educated physician (p.18), unlike the apprentice system. Doctor Benjamin Rush signed the Declaration of Independence and became the first great physician of the United States. Rush argued for temperance and prison reform, the emancipation of slaves, and humane treatment for the insane. Rush befriended Thomas Paine to help write "Common Sense". Overcrowded hospitals that lacked in hygiene were more dangerous than the front line (p.70). The Yellow Fever epidemic was one of the worst ever known. Rush recommended calomel and bleeding as a cure, but not all agreed. A cold snap was followed by a return to health.

Ephraim McDowell was the leading surgeon of the Kentucky frontier. He removed an ovarian tumor, his patient lived to age seventy-nine. It was one of the most important in the history of surgery. He also operated to remove a stone from a bladder, which saved James K. Polk (p.133). Daniel Drake's parents migrated from New Jersey to Kentucky, Drake worked to make Cincinnati a major center of education and progress with a medical college and a public hospital. Many medical colleges had personality clashes. Drake edited a medical periodical to spread knowledge (p.196).

William Beaumont became a doctor and joined the Army medical corps for the War of 1812. He was stationed at Fort Mackinac, a fur-trading post. A shooting accident wounded Alexis St. Martin in the stomach. His survival allowed the study of digestion. This discovery allowed other workers to investigate digestion. Alexis St. Martin lived to be over eighty

Four men claimed to be the discoverers of ether in the late 19th century. Laughing gas was less effective than ether. William Morton was in the first graduating class of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the first dental school in the US. He experimented with ether to relieve the pain of dental surgery. Doctors violated Morton's patent so he lost money. Others claimed credit (p.306). Financial conflicts led to jealousy (p.308). Crawford Long may have been the first to use ether but did not publicize it the way Morton did (pp.318-319).
