reimagine Jewish kinship, to the representation of Haitian Vodou on the Internet, among other case studies.
Combining rich historical and ethnographic detail with extended theoretical reflection, Deus in Machina outlines new directions for the study of religion and/as technology that will resonate across the human sciences, including religious studies, science and technology studies, communication studies, history, anthropology, and philosophy.

Technology as religion

Stolow explores religious links in technology, departing from classical understanding that technology is something sublime. In fact, through technology (and knowledge) humans can challenge gods and spirits, as is said in Genesis. With computers, machines that make virtual dynamics, seeming spiritual, as if they could also think, sense, express, learn, we have the impression that Deus is in machina. When information runs through wires or wireless, not physically, not the personalized communication, but its abstract, mathematized, formal structure – and it comes at the other side personalized, so that we can recognize the voice – this has to be divine or satanic. Very interesting book, with humor. We are more religious beings than we imagine, mainly when we deny this. Technology is, for many people, religion, of course.
