Miracle on High Street: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., by Thomas A. McCabe

Just outside downtown Newark, New Jersey, sits an abbey and school. For more than 150 years Benedictine monks have lived, worked, and prayed on High Street, a once-grand thoroughfare that became Newark's Skid Row and a focal point of the 1967 riots.St. Benedict's today has become a model of a successful inner-city school, with 95 percent of its graduates-mainly African American and Latino boys-going on to college. Miracle on High Street is the story of how the monks of St. Benedict's transformed their venerable yet outdated school to become a thriving part of the community that helped save a faltering city.In the 1960s, after a trinity of woes-massive deindustrialization, high-speed suburbanization, and racial violence-caused an exodus from Newark, St. Benedict's struggled to remain open. Enrollment in general dwindled, and fewer students enrolled from the surrounding community. The monks watched the violence of the 1967 riots from the school's rooftop along High Street. In the riot's aftermath more families fled what some called the worst city in America. The school closed in 1972, in what seemed to be just another funeral for an urban Catholic school. A few monks, inspired by the Benedictine virtues of stability and adaptability, reopened St. Benedict's only one year later with a bare-bones staff . Their new mission was to bring to young African American and Latino males the same opportunities that German and Irish immigrants had had 150 years before.More than thirty years later, St. Benedict's is one of the most unusual schools in the country. Its remarkable success shows that American education can bridge the achievement gap between white and black, as well as that between rich and poor. The story of St. Benedict's is about an institution's rise and fall, resurrection andrenaissance. It also provides valuable insights into American religious, immigration, educational, and metropolitan history. By staying true to their historical values amid a continually changing city, the downtown monks, in resurrecting its prep school, helped save an American city. Some have even called it the miracle on High Street.

Review

"This wondrous story of faith in the power of education, spiritual tenacity in an old American city, and redemption for generations of hardscrabble boys along Newark's High Street is important and timely. Tom McCabe's Miracle. captures the complicated history of the Benedictines on old American ground, shedding a brilliant light on why they have mattered, and still do, to the survival of inner city parochial education in the United States. It also persuasively argues that the decision, in retrospect an extraordinary one, to reopen the school was yet another symbol of Newark's Renaissance and the Benedictine challenge to racism. A triumph!" - Clement Alexander Price

"A dramatic, riveting account of a school and a city that rose and fell together, and the community of monks who dared to wed hopes for a revived St. Benedict's with Newark's precarious dreams of rebirth. Thomas A. McCabe is a gifted historian; he has crafted this highly lucid narrative with an insider's passion and a scholar's balance and grace." - James T. Fisher

"The inner-city school's remarkable revival shows that American education can bridge achievement gaps between white and black as well as rich and poor." - Publishers Weekly

"The captivating true story of a Catholic prep school that helped turn around a community falling prey to urban blight."--Midwest Book Review

"McCabe's lively history of St. Benedict's Miracle on High Street, may be a local story, but it's also a microcosm of the ebb and flow of the Catholic presence in many American cities."-Teresa Malcom, National Catholic Reporter

Superb and highly recommended!
By Richard de Triquet
Thomas McCabe's Miracle on High Street, tracing the history of Newark's Saint Benedict's Prep, is a truly superb and carefully researched historical work. Eloquent and genuinely heartfelt, McCabe's solid scholarship, nevertheless, ensures that his portrait is carefully presented in the context of shifting historical currents be they social, political or demographic. The essence of Saint Benedict's through the years, the character building and the sense of community that was and remains its core function, is superbly captured. The profiles of the Benedictine monks, the visionary leaders, the teachers and the athletic coaches are likewise noteworthy. McCabe's depiction of Newark's rapid decline leading to the school's eventual closure in 1972 made me revisit not only all of the deep sadness I felt as a freshman that year but also pride in having had the Bendict's "experience", albeit abbreviated. Finally, McCabe's depiction of Benedict's rebirth, true to its Benedictine values, is captivating and rightly credits the inspired leadership, organizational skill and relentless energy of a handful of remaining monks and the corporate benefactors and alumni leveraged in support.

Miracle on High Street is a seminal work that provides insight into an important Catholic educational institution that has over the years quietly and effectively taught and mentored generations of young men. It should be of keen interest not only to alumni and friends of Saint Benedict's, but also to those interested in American urban history, Catholic education in America and the history of Newark. Highly recommended!

Invaluable lessons for turning around the difficult problems of inner city decay
By Midwest Book Review
Miracle on High Street: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J. is the captivating true story of a Catholic prep school that helped turn around a community falling prey to urban blight. In the 1960s, deindustrialization, suburbanization, and racial violence caused an exodus from Newark. Benedictine monks that lived, worked, and prayed on High Street observed its decay into Newark's notorious Skid Row. Enrollment in St. Benedict's Prep School declined, and it closed in 1972. But a few monks drew inspiration from the Benedictine values of stability and adaptability to reopen it one year later, determined to offer young African American and Latino males opportunities for education and a better future. Thirty years later, St. Benedict's is an outstanding success story and an inspirational model; 95 percent of its graduates go on to college. St Benedict's has even been termed the "Miracle on High Street", and its contributions to the community offer invaluable lessons for turning around the difficult problems of inner city decay. Highly recommended.

Great insight into Newark and the legacy of St. Benedict's
By Jessica Robinson
Tom McCabe's comprehensive history of St. Benedict's Prep School--one of the most successful urban schools in the nation--is not just an inspiring story, but also a primer on Newark's complicated past. The first chapter is a brillant and incredibly detailed description of an American, 19th-century, religious-inspired, ethnically-divided, urban riot. Protestants battled Catholics in one of America's largest cities. The outcome was the birth of one of the most successful Benedictine abbeys in the world. Anyone with an interest in urban education or the history of Newark will benefit greatly from McCabe's book.
