From Publishers Weekly
Better known for his groundbreaking The Organization Man (1956) and The Exploding Metropolis (1958), Whyte, who died last year at 81, served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and penned this brief, previously unpublished memoir of his four months on Guadalcanal in 1942. Whyte volunteered for duty in October 1941 and became a lieutenant specializing in intelligence. He spends much of this perceptive memoir detailing his introduction to combat against the Japanese, with whom the Marines were battling for control of the island during America's first Pacific offensive. Plagued with inaccurate maps and little knowledge of jungle fighting, the Marines on Guadalcanal were exposed to incessant Japanese attacks; Whyte chronicles vividly the brief but savage battles as the U.S. force repelled them. His analysis of captured enemy papers and diaries reveals the overconfidence of the Japanese army and the problems encountered by their sometimes inept commanders. American marine and naval officers also come under Whyte's scrutiny, and several do not escape unscathed. Included in the book are two lengthy articles Whyte wrote for the Marine Corps Gazette, in which he described part of the campaign from the Japanese point of view. Those interested in Whyte's intellectual development will find the book fascinating, while those with less of an investment in the author will still find it an interesting period piece. From Library Journal
The small Pacific island of Guadalcanal is known mostly as the site of one of the major battles of World War II. Whyte's previously unpublished memoir adds new depth to our understanding of this pivotal encounter between U.S. Marines and Japanese armed forces and to our appreciation of the author of The Organization Man. Whyte joined the Marines in 1941, just months before Pearl Harbor, and became a Marine intelligence officer. His memoir emphasizes the inadequacy of planning on both sides and the confusion associated with armed conflict. It offers an engaging and insightful look at the complex reality of battle. Readers who have enjoyed Whyte's classic writings on business, urban planning, and the built environment will find this compact book equally entertaining. Recommended for larger libraries and especially for collections on military history.DKent Worcester, Marymount Manhattan Coll., New York

a great insider's view of guadalcanal
By A Customer
this appears to be the last book written by william h. whyte, author of the organization man. it's a lovely memoir about his days as a battalion intelligence officer on guadalcanal, serving under an amazing character named wild bill mckely, who was just a little drunk during the entire campaign. it's a warm, humorous, and at the same time deeply analytical account of one of the great decisive battles of world war 2. i loved it.

A Tiime of War: Remembering Holly Whyte and Guadalcanal
By Bill
William Hollingsworth Whyte was known to the Marines in the 3rd Battalion simply as Holly Whyte - - - Not even as Lieutenant Whyte, the 3rd Battalion's intelligence officer or (in Marine Corps lingo) the BN-2. To we who served in the 3rd Battalion during the battle to secure Guadalcanal (A Battle Without Maps) the peak of Holly's efforts were expended in his description of our battalion commander, Lt. Col William N. McKelvy, USNA 1921. Holly's characterizations of "Spike" McKelvy (the "Wild Bill" was acquired during the Guadalcanal campaign) are direct, descriptive and humorous. If Holly knew the rumours that "Spike" McKelvy alledgedly was "anchorman" in his USNA class, he never mentions it in a "A Time of War". Perhaps Holly's silent acknowledgment accounts for the fun he pokes at his commanding officer. Or, it may be a measure of the frivolity that carried us through the darkest days on the 'Canal.
