Photojournalist Gracen is a McCartney maven by avocation. In this neat rock bio, her photos take center stage, and the text describes the vicissitudes of various McCartney and Wings tours. The occasional rock road show revelation is definitely included. For instance, Gracen recounts the 12-minute film used to open concerts on the 1993 world tour. "This film showcased a musical history of the rock star with some never-before-seen footage of the Beatles, . . . home movies of the McCartney family, and some graphic scenes of vivisection, animal mutilation and torture." The latter were parts of "McCartney's ongoing campaign against animal cruelty." Yow! All that and silly love songs, too. Does the mop-top knight know how to put on a show, or what? Politics and gory visuals at rock concerts--shades of Marilyn Manson!--aside, this is a feel-good book for boomers. Uncritical and packed with pix and exasperatingly upbeat anecdotes, it is a must-have item for Beatlemaniacs. Mike Tribby

For psychofans only

This book isn't as much about Paul McCartney as it is about Paul McCartney fans. The author herself is a starry-eyed fan. The text consists mainly of other fans relating their experiences at McCartney concerts. You'll hear of the fans that quit their jobs in order to attend. You'll hear of the ones that reach out to grab, pat, or hug McCartney, and you'll understand why some stars hate stardom. You'll hear of those who snuck up to the floor of his hotel room, only to turn back because they knew "how Paul values his privacy" (unlike all those other big stars).
In short, it's a book by and for wackos. Harmless wackos, to be sure, but wackos nonetheless. There's nothing wrong with that, but just don't expect to learn very much about Paul McCartney from this book.
Oh sure, they'll tell you what a terrific guy he is (they also quote some of the most boringly banal interviews anyone has ever given--why??). I suspect, however, that if Paul ever acted like a jerk, you wouldn't read about it here.
Finally, there are the photographs. Most of them are from a relatively few number of concerts. But every one is captioned to let us know what song Paul was playing, where he was playing it, and when. And the author is pathetically particular about when and where Paul actually looks at her. After the first five or six shots of Paul with Hofner, Paul with Hamish, Paul alone, Paul sweating, etc., etc., etc., they start to blend into each other.
So don't buy this book if you're curious to know more about Paul McCartney. Buy it if you already know pretty much everything there is to know about him, but still can't get enough.

Absolutely Fantastic-A Must Have

I Saw Him Standing There by Jorie Gracen, is an absolutely wonderful book. It is a "must have" for those who are fans and collectors. For those who have attended many of Paul McCartney's concerts, it will bring back great memories. Jorie Gracen's photographs and the articles written by fans, truly capture the energy, and the feelings of joy and enthusiam. The book is a great tribute to the genius that is Sir Paul McCartney!

Go, Jorie, Go!

Over the years, I have collected some photos of Paul taken by Jorie. They are all fabulous. The book is a joy. I think that Jorie takes the second best pictures of Paul (the first being Linda, of course.)
I am so pleased with this book, I spend hours just looking at the photos again and again and again.
Nice job, Jorie. Keep up the great work.
