Kurt Frank Korf's story is one of the most unusual to come out of World War II. Although German-Americans were America's largest ethnic group, and German-Americans-including thousands of native-born Germans-fought bravely in all theaters, there are few full first-person accounts by German- Americans of their experiences during the 1930s and 1940s.Drawing on his correspondence and on oral histories and interviews with Korf, Patricia Kollander paints a fascinating portrait of a privileged young man forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1937 because the infamous Nuremburg Laws had relegated him to the status of second-degree mixed breed(Korf had one Jewish grandparent).Settling in New York City, Korf became an FBI informant, watching pro-Nazi leaders like Fritz Kuhn and the German-American Bund as they moved among the city's large German immigrant community. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany as an intelligence officer during the Battle of the Bulge, and as a prisoner of war camp administrator. After the war, Korf stayed on as a U.S. government attorney in Berlin and Munich, working to hunt down war criminals, and lent his expertise in the effort to determine the authenticity of Joseph Goebbels's diaries. "I Must Be A Part Of This War": A German American's Fight Against Hitler And Nazism by Patricia Kollander (with the help of John O'Sullivan) is the engaging story of Kurt Frank Korf's informant status after his move to America in 1937 brought him to work for the FBI, feeding them the information he was continually obtained from German-American pro-Nazi leaders such as Fritz Kuhn and German-American Bund during their progressively increasing pre-war influence with New York's German immigrant community. "I Must Be A Part Of This War" details happenings and occurrences rarely recognized in historical references for World War II on the American homefront, as well as a potentially epic tale of Korf's incredible significance in the great war against Nazism in America. "I Must Be A Part Of This War" is a unique and seminal addition to academic and community library 20th Century American History collections.

Great Historical Read

Although the author is a history professor, "I Must Be..." is thoroughly enjoyable historical account that is fascinating, entertaining and educational. WWII and history buffs should not miss this book! Tightly researched but thoroughly readable by the layperson. A broad audience including anyone interested in American or German history, fascinating life stories and complex love stories will treasure this book.

A German Fights to Free Germany

This book is a wonderful history of a German-American who fought in WWII: Kurt Franz Korf, a young attorney from Dusseldorf, fled persecution in Germany in 1937 (his grandmother was Jewish), went to the US and eventually enlisted in the US Army. Because of his fluency in German he was recruited for Military Intelligence and was assigned to the 97th Infantry Division during the last months of the war. His job was to gather and analyze intelligence and to capture and interrogate German soldiers and spies. He later used his legal background to aid in the prosecution of German war criminals at Nuremburg.
Based on extensive interviews with Korf and on mountains of documents that Korf had collected over the years, plus meticulous research by the authors, this is a personal story embedded in a richly portrayed historical context. Kollander and O'Sullivan are interested in what it takes for a man to go to war against his own country, and what conflicts this creates, but Korf is clear on his moral choices and, as a highly-educated German (he had earned a doctorate in law before leaving Germany) he understood very well what he was doing.
The story is fascinating, well-written and informative, so that soon you are invested in Korf's thoughts and feelings, his motives and his drive to fight for German freedom and peace. He is, nonetheless, thoroughly American and proud to call the US his home. Altogether this is a surprising psychological profile wrapped in an account of one of history's fiercest struggles, and it serves as a superb source on the war and its aftermath.
My father served in the 97th CIC Detachment under Lt. Korf and so I was interested in this book from a personal point of view.
