About the Author
George Washington Williams (1849-1891) was a Pennsylvania-born soldier, legislator, and historian whose History of the Negro Race in America, 1619-1880 (1882) became the first work of serious scholarship by an African American.
Dr. John David Smith is Charles H. Stone Distinguished Professor of American History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He edited Black Soldiers in Blue: African American Troops in the Civil War Era (2002).

A Book About Negro Troops, Written by One

Mr. Williams was recognized as the first true historian of the black race in the United States. Starting a free black fourteen-year-old runaway, he joined the US Colored Troops, fought in engagements and suffered war wounds. Later, he joined the all-black 10th Cavalry for duty in Indian Country. This not-so-literate nineteen-year-old decided to go to college and became a minister and true intellectual, who wanted written record of African-American Civil War valor and victory. This masterpiece of Civil War information has been acclaimed over many years.
