"Rain Makes Applesauce" Words by Julian Scheer, Picture by Marvin Bileck The stars are made of lemon juice... ...and rain makes applesauce. Elbows grow on a tickle tree... ...and rain makes applesauce. Oh, you're just talking silly talk. This is a book of silly talk. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. And yet it is an extraordinary creation, in which author and artist speak to children in a very special way. The fanciful nonsense and marvelously intricate pictures are full of sly subtleties and happy surprises for both eye and ear. It is a book of absurd delights, of tiny, fey graphic details, of captivating scenes and lyrical phrases that stretch the imagination. Children will return to it again and again for new meanings, new images, new responses.

And This Book Makes Great Joy - Forever!
By A Customer
Oh JOY! Indeed what an absolute joy to type in the title 'Rain Makes Applesauce', and find out that this glorious book is in print again!
I've read every other Amazon Customer Review of this book, & I agree with every single person: this is a Must-Have book for children AND adults. I have not seen it since my 4 years in college where I spent 4 years purchasing copies & either giving them as presents to my friends, or simply never getting them back when loaned. Hence when other reviewers right here tell you such things as 'my children had to take it out every other week from the library for YEARS because they adored it so much' - & that another actually went on to become an artist because of 'Rain' - & that Christmas simply STOPPED for yet another family while 2 excited daughters, now adult, put everything else aside until they'd re-read 'Rain' from end to end: BELIEVE THEM!
'Rain Makes Applesauce' is an infinitely memorable book with exquisite illustrations. It speaks to all whose hearts are young. Here is that rare, one-in-a million book suffused with an ineffable joy & replete with that exquisite silliness found only in the observations of those gifted with Innocence no matter what their chronological age. Children fall in love with this book the moment it begins. Adults do, too. Even if you don't have children: buy it for yourself. Or find a family to give it to, for the that singular pleasure found only in hearing the unstudied laughter of children welling up unstoppably and spilling out like - Yes! - like the most delicious of rains.

A VERY VERY POPULAR WORK FOR THE LITTLE ONES
By D. Blankenship
This strange, weird and fascinating work, Rain Makes Applesauce by Julian Scheer and Marvin Bileck dates back to 1964. Fortunately it is still with us today, but is getting more difficult to find. This work consists of very strange and nonsensical sentences. Examples of these are "Salmon slide down a Hippo's hide, and rain makes applesauce," and "Monkeys mumble in a jelly bean jungle, and rain makes applesauce." These silly words cover two pages in a scroll type script, across and through some of the most interesting illustrations I have ever seen in a children's book.

The illustrations are well; I can only call them mind boggling. They first appear to be quite cluttered and are extremely complicated and detailed. Now this is important....the adult mind will quite often glance at these pictures, become instantly overloaded, and then move on to the next page. Big, big, big mistake here! I did this myself when I first opened this book, but then I started watching children reading it. I mean reading it over and over and over again! I stopped, took a second look, and now I find myself reading it over and over and over again! There is something new to see each and ever time you go through this work! Each illustration covers two pages, is detailed in the extreme and lightly colored so as not to be completely overwhelming.

As to the text; it is a string of very silly statements, which by the way, is pointed out by a number of little pixie type kids hidden in the corner of many of the illustrations. You are reminded several times throughout the entire book that "Oh, you're just talking silly talk." If you read the text very closely and study the pictures very closely, you will find a common theme running throughout the book...Rain does indeed make applesauce!

This book was written for kids from age four to eight. The reading level is not very high, but in this case reading levels really are not the point, but imagination and stimulation is. About the only people I have found that do not like this particular work are adults, and I am sorry to say that those that did not like it sort of fell into the category of "big people with little or no imagination who forgot what it was like to be a kid again." PLEASE TAKE NOTE: The title of this book is "Rain Makes Applesauce," and not "Rain Makes Apple Sauce." This makes a big difference when you go to buy the book. This book is out of print, sadly, and it is noted that on the various sites that sell used books, the price of the misspelled title is almost double that of the correctly spelled one...same book, different price.

Rain Makes Applesauce
By Anna Hahn
This is a charming book for children to read. Its silly phrases and fantastic illustrations will keep children entertained for countless readings.
It is a childhood favorite of mine, one I have shared with numerous students. "Oh you're just talking silly talk," was a favorite saying from my childhood. Once I read this book to my students, they used the phrase too.
I'm thrilled to see this book in print again!
