Speaking the Truth in Love: Theological and Spiritual Exhortations of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (Orthodox Christianity and Contempor

The second of three volumes of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's writings, this book includes a selection of major addresses and significant statements by the first among equalsand spiritual leader of the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians. Whereas the first volume covered global and interfaith issues, this volume represents the inter-Christian initiatives and theological outreach of the Patriarch, covering a range of topics, such as ecumenism and theology. It also contains various ecclesiastical declarations, such as occasional pastoral encyclicals and extraordinary patriarchal exhortations. His All Holiness was trained and experienced in inter-Christian relations, having pursued studies in Roman Catholic theology at the Gregorian University of Rome, Protestant thought at the University of Munich, and the ecumenical movement beside the World Council of Churches in Geneva. Moreover, he has lectured widely on the significance and role of Orthodox theology in contemporary society, having received honorary doctoral degrees from esteemed academic institutions throughout the world. Unafraid to address sensitive, and even controversial issues - such as papal primacy, divisions within Christianity, and inter-Orthodox unity - His All Holiness balances Orthodox doctrine and canon law with open-mindedness and open-heartedness.His official visits to Rome as the personal guest of Pope John Paul II marked the first occasions in history that an Ecumenical Patriarch met with the Roman Catholic Pope in Rome. His invitation to Pope Benedict XVI marked the opening of the Pontiff's ministry and his first visit to a Christian minority within a Muslim nation.Over the last two decades, he is also the first Ecumenical Patriarch to have traveled throughout the world and to have convened meetings of all Orthodox primates of autocephalous Churches as well as of all bishops directly within the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This book reveals the spiritual depth and profound doctrine of the Orthodox Church from the unique perspective of a Christian leader speaking the truth in love.

Review

Once again, the Ecumenical Patriarch has let us catch a glimpse of the breadth and depth of his ecumenical vision in this insightful volume of his teachings, which also includes many of his more recent addresses and homilies. In his tireless journeys across the globe, Patriarch Bartholomew has been a constant and courageous champion of Jesus' call to Unity. That call is echoed constantly and with great eloquence in this collection, which I wholeheartedly recommend to all Christians seeking to know and to follow the message of the Lord.-Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick

A deep source of knowledge and spiritual guidance, making the rich and precious gifts of Orthodox theology, church life, and experience in relationships with other churches available to the wider public! This is a real ecumenical treasure, patiently and passionately constituted by a distinguished, world-renowned, and deeply respected church leader who has received well-deserved attention for his contributions to theological and ethical reflection far beyond his own constituency. We owe our gratitude to His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for sharing these fruits of his leadership, theological wisdom, love for God's creation, and spiritual depth.-Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit

Words are not cheap in this book
By Edward M. Freeman
The present text is the second of three volumes to be published by Fordham University Press of addresses, encyclicals, sermons, and other writings by His All Holiness Bartholomew I who is the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The first volume, 'In the World, Yet Not of the World,' appeared in 2009 and contained various essays and speeches by the Ecumenical Patriarch concerning religious tolerance, human rights and international peace. Whereas there were more than a few entries about environmental awareness in the first volume, the third and forthcoming volume will contain writings by His All Holiness about the natural environment.

The editor for this series is John Chryssavgis, a theologian and deacon of the Orthodox Church, who provides a 21-page Introduction to complement a detailed biography of the Ecumenical Patriarch, which he authored for the first volume. In particular, Chryssavgis provides a timeline of significant events that shaped the Patriarch's "ecumenical conscience and theological principles" [2].

Beginning with the year 1957 when the future Patriarch entered studies in the Halki at the age of 17 [born February 1940], it is clear from the timeline that he was formed in Orthodoxy in one of the Church's more prominent schools before a three-year sojourn in Rome at the Oriental Institute. There he defended his dissertation three years later at the age of 26. By the end of his studies at the Oriental Institute, he had already mastered Italian, Latin and French to add to his native bilingual fluency in Greek and Turkish. English is his third language, but he acquired fluency in English before he studied in Rome.

In seven detailed pages [3-9], the editor traces the Ecumenical Patriarch's formative events in life from 1957 until his appointment in 1972 to the Private Patriarchal Office of Patriarch Dimitrios, who preceded him on the chair of St. Andrew. Serving in this capacity led the future Patriarch Bartholomew I to accompany his predecessor in all international travels. Therefore, it came as no surprise that the Holy Synod elected him to succeed his spiritual father and mentor, +Dimitrios, in October 1991 as the 270th Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch.

Subsequent to the timeline in the Introduction, the editor provides three diverse impressions of the current Patriarch, whose writings begin on page 22. The first impressions come from the pen of the late Olivier Clément in his 1997 monograph, 'Conversations with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I' [St. Vladimir Orthodox Seminary Press]. These pages shine with his recollections of conversations shared, interspersed between historical and current events in the Church that shed light on the character of Bartholomew. The other two biographers of Bartholomew are Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, who is well acquainted with the vision and leadership of Bartholomew, and Dr. Samuel Kobia, the immediate past Secretary General of the World Council of Churches, who as a Methodist clergyman from Kenya attests to Bartholomew's support of international peace and ecumenical dialogue.

The Foreword to this second volume is by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. Williams explores two principal themes that he identifies in the text: (1) an orientation toward a global identity by the Orthodox Church as opposed to prisons of local or ethnic make-up; and (2) a pervasive and penetrating engagement of Church in the world and for the world as an extension of Christ, the Church's Head, and His kenosis.

Five chapters provide a framework for the Patriarch's writings: (1) Encyclicals for the major Christian seasons and feasts [22-105]; (2) Addresses to members of the Orthodox Church [106-92]; (3) Presentations at ecumenical gatherings [193-313]; (4) Academic lectures and discourses [314-81]; and (5) Assorted messages and declarations [382-426]. Relative equality of apportionment is evident in pages assigned to each of five chapters, but the third chapter that provides Bartholomew's presentations at ecumenical gatherings holds the largest number of pages in comparison with the others.

Excerpted passages from chapter three include:

(1) "Today, Orthodoxy is called to continue this dialogue with the outside world in order to provide witness and the life-giving breath of its faith. However, this dialogue cannot reach the outside world unless it first passes through all those who bear the Christian name" [194].

(2) "Today's world experiences great stress stemming from insufficient human communication. Uncertainty and suspicion prevail with respect to the sincerity, intentions, and aspirations of various human societies that rally against each other" [200].

(3) In welcoming His Holiness Benedict XVI, who visited the Phanar in 2009, Bartholomew wrote: "This journey toward achieving full communion, as enjoyed by our churches in common during the first millennium, has already commenced with the dialogue of love and truth, and it continues by God's grace despite occasional difficulties" [231].

(4) Speaking in a homily delivered at St. Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the World Council of Churches, Bartholomew was courageous to recall a crisis in ecumenical solidarity that had befallen the WCC ten years prior. "That crisis was initially attributed to differences between Orthodox and Protestant members of the council, but it was in fact a crisis between those representing different theological and ecclesiological traditions as well as between the various churches, each of which had its own distinctive interpretation of holy scripture, and a different perception of moral, social and political issues. It was nonetheless a healthy crisis that enabled us to engage in sincere and humble dialogue, with no ulterior motives" [238].

These are courageous and conciliatory messages of hope. Each selection demonstrates sound Orthodox Theology and Christology while engaging an ecumenical mission that has been tested by fire over the past two decades. Readers will appreciate the author's vision, such as we should "...never grow tired of conversing with those of good faith who ask the reason of the hope that we have within us" [220].
