France during World War II: From Defeat to Liberation (World War II: The Global, Human, and Ethical Dimension), by Thomas R. Christoffers

In this concise, clearly written book, Thomas and Michael Christofferson provide a balanced introduction to every aspect of the French experience during World War II.Synthesizing a wide range of scholarship, the authors integrate political, diplomatic, military, social, cultural, and economic history in this portrait of a nation and a people at war. Here is a chronicle of the battles and campaigns that stained French soil with blood. Here, also, is the full historical context of the war-its origins, realities, and aftermath-in French society. The authors pay particular attention to the key failures of institutional France-especially the officer corps, political elites, and the Catholic Church. They also assessthe controversial history of the Vichy regime and the German occupation, in carefully crafted accounts of resistance and collaboration, Vichy's National Revolution, and the fate of France's Jews.Accessible to both students and general readers, France during World War II develops a full understanding of the actors, events, issues, and controversies of a turbulent era.

Probably a Pretty Balanced View
By John Matlock
I picked up this book prepared to see an attack against France and its actions during World War II. And it is a book in which you can find all kinds of things to complain about France. But just about the time you get a good anger building up the authors find another point to bring up that makes you more sympathetic to what they were going through.

In the military cemetaries in North Africa you can find the graves of American soldiers killed on the first day of the invasion in 1942. They were killed fighting the French. In French cemeteries you can find French civilians killed as hostages by the Germans.

When informed about D-Day DeGaulle refused to make a radio broadcast asking the French to assist. This is excellently portrayed in the film The Longest Day. But later DeGaulle did make a broadcast and Eisenhower, after the war, stated that the French contributed greatly to the Allied victory.

All in all this appears to be a balanced overall look at the actions of France during World War II. As such, it is an important part of the history of World War II and deserves a place on a World War II bookshelf.

The living hell of a conservative's dream
By a movie fan
The Vichy government of unoccupied France during WWII seems to be a huge missing piece in the content of the American educational system. It never rated more than a sentence in any of my history courses. There also doesn't seem to be much available in the popular literature, which makes this book especially valuable. It isn't cheap, as paperbacks go, but it is well worth the price, and very thoroughly researched. I imagine most readers will find that it's more than they wanted to know, but also that they have learned something astonishing, which should have been an important part of their education. The Vichy government was a marriage of conservative politicians and a conservative clergy, all bent on purging France of the alleged evils of women's rights, democracy, Anglophilia, left-wingers (from liberals to Communists), trade unionists, and, while we're at it, Jews. In addition to rounding up the latter at the request of the Germans (who occupied about 2/3 of France, Vichy being the remainder), they used authoritarian powers, disguised as a free government, to strangle the others. Women and those designated as "workers" were forbidden any education beyond grade school, except for essentially vocational courses. Women were barred from professions. The authority of the family patriarch was claimed to be absolute and the basis of the entire state (although, in practice, the state ruled over the family). It was impossible, reading all this, not to perceive in it the kind of world that Rick Santorum et al would have us endure. It also makes the recent hard-right swerve of the Catholic Church a bit more scary. The Church was an integral part of the Vichy enterprise. One high-ranking cleric even gave a sermon in a Nazi uniform to stress the alignment of Vichy with the Third Reich. The Church withheld services from members of the resistance (the Maquis and others) until well after D-Day, when the outcome was no longer in doubt.
The Vichy government also controlled French colonies, including those in North Africa. When the Allies invaded in 1942, in order to attack the Afrika Korps from the west, the French military fought back. Better for France to be occupied by Germany, it was thought, than for any French territory to be occupied (even briefly) by Brits and Yanks.
There is a lot more in the book that what I've extracted here. For example, the authors examine in detail the treatment of French Jews. Many, if not most, French citizens considered them French first and Jewish second. They were sometimes rounded up, as ordered by the Germans, but put in unguarded camps from which they could just walk away. Statistically, they did not fare worse in France than in other European countries. There was more hostility towards non-French immigrants. And the authors try to give an overview of French national politics, which is no easy task. They also untangle the multiple threads of the resistance movement(s), much of which has been mythologized after the war.
In short, this is an impressive and invaluable book, full of lessons that can't be learned until they are known.
