The tale of New York City's bridges begins in 1883, when the Brooklyn Bridge rose majestically over the East River, signaling the start of America's "Golden Age" of bridge building. The Williamsburg followed in 1903, the Queensboro (renamed the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge) and the Manhattan in 1909, the George Washington in 1931, the Triborough (renamed the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge) in 1936, the Bronx-Whitestone in 1939, the Throgs Neck in 1961, and the Verrazano-Narrows in 1964. Each of these classic bridges has its own story, and the book's paintings show the majesty and artistry, while the essays fill in the fascinating details of its social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental history.
America's great bridges, built almost entirely by immigrant engineers, architects, and laborers, have come to symbolize not only labor and ingenuity but also bravery and sacrifice. The building of each bridge took a human toll. The Brooklyn Bridge's designer and chief engineer, John A. Roebling, himself died in the service of bridge

About the Author
Antonio Masi , fascinated by bridges since childhood, began painting them a decade ago. He is drawn particularly to the 59th Street (the recently renamed Ed Koch Queensboro) Bridge, which his grandfather Francesco Masi helped build. Masi has won national and global acclaim for his paintings of New York City bridges.
Joan Marans Dim is the co-author of The Miracle on Washington Square: New York University and the author of the novel Recollections of a Rotten Kid. She grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and has traveled the bridges of New York City all her life. She now lives in Brooklyn.

Captivating art and history

New York's Golden Age of Bridges by Antonio Masi and Joan Marans Dim is a treasure for those who love architecture and history. The massive structures are angular and utilitarian but also fluid and evanescent in Masi's paintings, which offer perspective and detail usually found in oil rather than watercolors used by the artist. Dim deftly combines the story of each bridge's construction with insight into Masi's approach to his subjects. I spent hours admiring and reading these pages and look forward to perusing them again.

Epic Painting and An Enthralling HIstory of Bridges and the Role They Play in Our Lives

New York's Golden Age of Bridges is a book for every New Yorker, bridge enthusiast, artist, architect, engineer, city planner and those interested in history. Antonio Masi's water-color paintings are epic. Joan Marans Dim's history is enthralling and entertainingly explains how nine long-span bridges have defined New York City and, eventually, a nation. This volume is so much more than a coffee table book. What a great present! And so reasonably priced for the beauty and knowledge within!

Crossing New York's Golden Age of Bridges

This book is a treasure of beautiful water color paintings by Antonio Masi and fascinating essays by Joan Marans Dim. I found the combination of these paintings and essays a perfect way to inform a reader about these wonderful structures that I had only admired as a visitor to NYC. Now I'm anxious to return and revisit these magnificent bridges. Joan Dim writes with a fine blend of the historian and the artistic writer admiring the bridges themselves, Masi's renderings of them and the amazing contributions of the architects, engineers and others that enabled them to be built. She discusses the courage of designers and construction workers, the foresight of the politicians and the people of the city themselves who all contributed to each of the 9 bridges construction and remodeling and repairing when needed.
I plan to order more copies of this book for presents for friends that love NYC and appreciate lovely art and skillful, compelling writing.
