These alone, however, do not seem enough to account for the religious status of the work. Arguing for a breakthrough toward the beyondon the basis of the synaesthetic experience of music, Messiaen invites a confrontation with contemporary theologians and post-secular thinkers. How to account for a religious breakthrough that is produced by a work of art?Starting from an analysis of his 1960s oratorio La Transfiguration de Notre-Seigneur Jsus-Christ, this book arranges a moderated dialogue between Messiaen and the music theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, the phenomenology of revelation of Jean-Luc Marion, the rethinking of religion and technics in Jacques Derrida and Bernard Stiegler, and the Augustinian ruminations of Sren Kierkegaard and Jean-Franois Lyotard. Ultimately, this confrontation underscores the challenging yet deeply affirmative nature of Messiaen's music.

An important and balanced scholarly insight into Messiaen's religious music

One of the most insightful references on the significance of Messiaen's rekindling of spiritual inspiration and symbolism in the C20th. It is easy to categorise a composer with such a conspicuous Roman Catholic faith and works so clearly aligned to his particular beliefs and perhaps some people would even disregard these works due to their religiousness. However, from a scholarly and musical perspective, Messiaen's works served two important roles in the Twentieth Century: (i) dissolving the fierce fraction between sacred and musical material (and the polemic between sacred and secular) that characterises so much of postmodern music and (ii) by evidencing his inventiveness in musical form, language, modes of harmonic and rhythmic composition, Messiaen's spiritual inspiration watered an individual and monumental harmonic and metric position in contemporary music that remains compositionally and historically significant and unique. The meaning-making is integrally tied to the constructs of the musical language. For church music, Messiaen propels it ardently and boldly into the Twentieth Century, perhaps not an easy stance given potential expectations heralding from tradition and worship and the possible constraints inherent in congregational music but Messiaen takes his religious motivation and sets it distinctly in the genre of instrumental, orchestra, organ, oratorio and oratorio music, with a modern aesthetic, blending both content and setting with a profoundly distinctive and identifiable flavour. Whatever one may think of his sound world, Messiaen's language is always clearly identifiable, individual and extremely refined in terms of its formalised structures and systematic approach. Van Maas' book, along with Siglind Bruhn's book, are amongst the chief two scholarly books that seriously and selectively examine both the religious inspiration and musical analysis in this field. Van Mass provides a high degree of detail that would be especially valued by the tertiary music student, scholar or fascinated reader who has an understanding of music and wants to read an in-depth discussion of musical mechanism, metaphor and symbolism. This book also exists in a Kindle edition.
