Kevin M. Cahill, M.D., is University Professor and Director of Fordham University's Institute for International Humanitarian Affairs and President of The Center for International Humanitarian Cooperation in New York City. The best compact text for tropical medicine!

I am a physician and went to Africa on a medical mission trip. I reviewed 4 medical textbooks on tropical medicine and this was my favorite. I read it front to back. It is straightforward and covers all the expected tropical diseases in an orderly fashion. It is easy to read and had appropriate illustrations. Great text, I heartily recommend it.

I love the jungle and the tropics

I love the jungle and the tropics. Still, watch Naked and Afraid to see just what a cruel place it can be to exist in. Makes me have a great deal more respect for primitive South American tribes who can live in this veritable green hell. This book does a superb job of documenting the various medical hells that can befall those who enter its deadly environment for all but the briefest amount of time. My summary of how to best avoid the hell that can await you is:
1. Boil the water for at least 5 minutes before you drink it. Better yet, take your own water.
2. Cover yourself with long pants and long sleeved shirts and use lots of DEET!
3. Go on vacations where you enter the jungle early in the morning and head for a comfortable bed which is protected with mosquito netting each evening before dark.
The tropics are fascinating, especially when seen from a chair in your living room watching some Nat Geo special about wildest wherever. If you're under 40 - be sure to go and experience the jungle. My favorite place: Costa Rica.
Have fun and get this book in hardcover. If you fall ill after you return from the tropics, you will know from having read this book that your doctor back home won't know squat about tropical medicine. If something weird attacks you as a result of your trip to the tropics, prey the doctor will examine this book and get a clue! Have fun but realize there are things in that jungle that can make your life hell.
