Best Treatment of Free Will and Determinism!

I can only concur with the words of the great Mortimer Adler in the Foreword to this book. It is quite simply the best treatment of the topic of free will and determinism one can find. It is the depth of Simon's grasp of philosophical history that opens the doors to true illumination here. The entire modern discussion of freedom got sidetracked precisely by its identification of freedom with indeterminism, which leads to the conclusion that a truly free act would have no real cause. Freedom as indeterminism provides no basis for appropriating freedom as an important human value. As Adler explains at the outset, the moderns simply were unaware of Thomas Aquinas' rich treatment of the subject. Recalling Aquinas, and in a very well-written, careful and clear exposition, Simon explains precisely how free acts are caused by a genuinely free will, and that the latter entails an uncompromising commitment to the moral good. It is precisely in the free choice to pursue the good and develop one's character so as to be capable of bringing it about that renders one truly free. This is why this book is indeed the perfect antidote for the misguided discussions of freedom today, which reduce it to the absence of external coercion by government, as though the mere absence of political authority would somehow be an admirable state of existence, morally and politically. This book deserves to be considered a masterpiece. All students of philosophy should read it. It is admirably clear in its exposition, replete with helpful explanatory examples.
