Hart Crane's 'The Bridge': An Annotated EditionFrom Brand: Fordham University Press

Hart Crane's long poem The Bridge has steadily grown in stature since it was published in 1930. At first branded a noble failure by a few influential critics- a charge that became conventional wisdom-this panoramic work is now widely regarded as one of the finest achievements of twentieth-century American poetry. It unites mythology and modernity as a means of coming to terms with the promises, both kept and broken, of American experience. The Bridge is also very difficult. It is well loved but not well understood. Obscure and indirect allusions abound in it, some of them at surprisingly fine levels of detail. The many references to matters of everyday life in the 1920s may baffle or elude today's readers. The elaborate compound metaphors that distinguish Crane's style bring together diverse sources in ways that make it hard to say what, if anything, is going onin the text. The poem is replete with topical and geographical references that demand explication as well as identification. Many passages are simply incomprehensible without special knowledge, often special knowledge of a sort that is not readily available even today, when Google and Wikipedia are only a click away.Until now, there has been no single source to which a reader can go for help in understanding and enjoying Crane's vision. There has been no convenient guide to the poem's labyrinthine complexities and to its dense network of allusions-the thousands of strandsthat, Crane boasted, had to be sorted out, researched, and interwovento compose the work. This book is that guide. Its detailed and far-reaching annotations make The Bridge fully accessible, for the first time, to its readers, whether they are scholars, students, or simply lovers of poetry.

Review

Hart Crane's The Bridge is generally agreed to be one of the great long poems of the early twentieth-century, but its obscure allusions and habitual double entendres have made it a difficult poem to digest. Lawrence Kramer's excellent annotated edition, produced with the help of a devoted group of graduate students, thus fills what is a real lacuna. Not only are Kramer's annotations deeply learned and precise; they also display great tact and common sense, refusing to overwhelm us with data or tangential matter. No student of Hart Crane-indeed no lover of Modernist poetry-will want to be without this necessary edition of The Bridge.-Marjorie Perloff

Kramer's edition will be an unqualified boon to anyone who wants to introduce students to Crane. And that is because students themselves have had a hand in producing the superb annotations here. Thanks to this version, the difficulty of reading The Bridge will no longer be an obstacle to teaching and studying Crane's great poem.-Robert L. Caserio

No great poem is more deceptively titled than The Bridge, a workwhose restless dynamics exceed all architectural containment. HartCrane set out to celebrate America but what he produced was a rhapsodyto New York City, conceived as a fount of immense power and idealperch for assessing national values in a Jazz Age. And now, underLawrence Kramer's capacious annotation, The Bridge expands into itsfullest dimensions, becoming historical fantasia, dream-text,combative retort, personal document, national epic, queer libretto, and machine-age homage. Frank O'Hara's claim that Crane's writing isbetter than the movies is exuberantly realized in Kramer's detaileddramaturgy.-Edward Brunner

An excellent companion to the 'The Bridge'...
By Brian C.
I had tried reading Hart Crane's 'The Bridge' a number of times before finding this book, and despite being moved by Crane's language and the sections of the poem I could understand, I always found myself ultimately being defeated by the poem's obscurity and the wealth of allusions within the poem that I was unfamiliar with. This book solves that problem by providing annotations for all (or most) of Crane's allusions. Unlike many annotated poems and guides, however, this book goes further and provides some background about Crane's intentions, the themes of the poem, its relation to the poets who most influenced Crane's vision (especially the opposed visions of Whitman and Eliot), as well as historical and biographical information.

This book seems superior to me to the other annotated poems I have read (for example, the annotated versions of Eliot's The Waste Land (Norton Critical Editions), or the various guides to The Cantos of Ezra Pound (New Directions Paperbook)) precisely because the notes are longer than usual. They do not simply explain the allusions but attempt to go into some depth about the overall meaning of the poem which is essential if you really want to understand what Hart Crane is up to in 'The Bridge'. It is true that the notes become somewhat speculative at times. Sometimes the interpretations presented in the notes seem a bit out there, but the notes often offer more than one possible interpretation for a given passage. My philosophy when interpreting a poem like this is: the more possible interpretations given the better, even if some of them seem out there, or fail to connect with a particular reader. The notes that did not connect with me may connect with someone else, or they may connect with me at a later time when I re-read the poem and have thought about it more. At the very least they will stimulate thought, and all of the interpretations offered in the notes certainly provide much food for thought.

The bottom line is: this book has increased my appreciation for Crane's poem a hundred fold, and that on its own makes this book well worth reading. I would also like to recommend another book on Hart Crane's poetry which I have actually only just started, but it is so good so far I feel comfortable recommending it even without having finished it Hart Crane's Poetry: "Appollinaire lived in Paris, I live in Cleveland, Ohio" by John T. Irwin. It is the perfect book for anyone who has worked their way through this annotated edition of Crane's poem and wants to go even deeper.

Definitive, ish.
By Anthony Warner
Despite a strong critical interest in Crane since almost immediately following his death, The Bridge only this year received its first annotated edition. While some glosses are overlong, and while Kramer created the annotations within the context of a graduate seminar, granting his students' often self-indulgent thoughts and opinions perhaps too much weight, this will surely be a classic in the field for years to come.

Crane is a great poet, and if you want to actually understand this rather difficult poem, you need to get this book. Enough said.
