Salvatore Basile is Cathedral Music Historian as well as a soloist and Senior Cantor of the Cathedral Choir at St. Patrick's Cathedral. He has performed in numerous venues and is a music historian with a vast collection of period recordings.

a fascinating read

This is a fascinating book. I couldn't put it down and read it in two days. If you have the slightest interest in NYC history, church music, choral singing, singers, or Roman Catholic liturgy, you should definitely buy Fifth Avenue Famous. One thing in particular I loved about this book is that it is written by someone who obviously knows from direct experience all the little quirks of professional church musicians and the way they work. I gained a new understanding of the various papal pronouncements on church music and how they have affected the musicians "in the trenches" throughout the 20th century. Having been in this field myself since 1978, so much of what iss described in these pages rings true; some of the more recent events described touched me personally, as I was an Associate Organist at another major east coast cathedral at the time and met one or two of the people mentioned in the last few chapters. Basile's painstaking research into the life and work of men like Pietro Yon and James Ungerer sent me to the file cabinets to search for their compositions, and I have plans to perform some long-neglected mass settings this spring as a result. One word of warning, though: if you are someone looking for lots of detailed information about the organs of St. Patrick's, you will not find what you are looking for in this book. The author certainly gives enough information to satisfy most readers, but he is not an organist and does not spend page after page describing pipe scalings and wind pressures. That being said, an appendix with a stoplist or two might have been nice, but that would have been only a pleasant bonus. There are many fascinating photographs included. Fifth Avenue Famous is entertaining, edifying, and absolutely worth buying for yourself and for your friends with similar interests.

A 'must' for any New York or spirituality or music shelf

Fifth Avenue Famous: The Extraordinary Story of Music at St Patrick's Cathedral offers a fine history of one of the most important churches in New York City, blending in a history of church music as a whole and telling of singers, music directors, and emerging religious trends and technological changes alike. The stories here offer an in-depth look at the history, choral music and evolution of music at St. Patrick's and makes for a fine collection documenting the cathedral's evolution and importance - a 'must' for any New York or spirituality or music shelf.

Would 10+++stars if possible--one of the best, if not the best, histories of music in a particular church

This book was hard to put down to take a break. It is well-written, which itself is becoming a rarity these days, and this makes for smooth reading.
Salvatore Basile apparently loves intensely the Cathedral and its music history because the book comes across as something perhaps researched out of personal interest, enthusiasm, and experience over almost a lifetime, not just because he is St. Patrick's Cathedral Music Historian, a Senior Cantor, and a soloist. This is not the typical commissioned book or a book written as merely part of the job. This love of the place and its history comes through on every page. The illustrations and photographs for each section are excellent, as even are those on the endpapers and inside covers. Kudos to Fordham UP for dark, easily readable type and uncrowded pages. As did one earlier reviewer, I went to my files for organ music and "Gesu Bambino" copies used each Christmas and Epiphany in my own Episcopal church (I am a retired literature professor, but liturgical church music is my serious avocation). I have searched for recordings from St. Pat's, and even found an old Harper's 19th century article on boychoirs in New York. I will continue to search ebay, abebooks, and other sources. I haven't been to New York in two decades, but this book makes me want to go back. I was fortunate last week to obtain an original Kilgen organ dedication program from ebay.
My suggestions below are in no way meant to be negative, but merely to request more sauce for the meat and more helpings. If there is to be a revised edition, I would like to see:
1) a discography;
2) a list of music sung and played;
3) a stoplist (as an earlier reviewer suggested) as well as changes made over the years;
4) detailed photographs of both the inside of the organ and the tower choir room;
5) a list or chart of all organists/directors/cantors/soloists over the years; and
6) some facsimile programs.
Some stoplists are available on the New York Chapter of the AGO's excellent website of New York organs.
I would gladly purchase a revised edition with the above.
Perhaps Mr. Basile can compile a second volume with these items.
